Brangelina’s secret wedding: Jolie’s father not invited

MUMBAI: After nine years of togetherness and six children later, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt finally tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on 23 August at Chateau Miraval, France.

Keeping the whole thing under wraps, while everybody else was preoccupied with the VMA Awards and the Emmy Awards, Pitt and Jolie got their marriage licence in California, and got married in front of a very small group of friends and family.

According to media reports, along with the rest of the world, Jolie’s father, the veteran actor Jon Voight was also unaware of this event. When asked about the wedding, the actor told TMZ that he first read about them via an online news site.

Jolie and Voight have had a turbulent relationship in the past. Back in 2001, Voight announced that Jolie had been suffering from ‘serious mental problems’ and said that he had urged her to seek professional help. They eventually reconciled in 2011.

Asked whether he was upset not to be invited, he responded by saying he was busy with the Emmy Awards anyway, having been nominated for a prize for his portrayal of the character Mickey Donovan in TV series Ray Donovan.

According to the reports, talking about the wedding he also said, “I’m very happy that I can legitimately call him my son-in-law, this wonderful fellow who I love, you know what, they are very happy. The kids must have had a wonderful time at the wedding, they all had their things to do and it must have been very beautiful so I’m very happy for them.”

Jolie reportedly walked down the aisle with her eldest sons Maddox, 13, and Pax, 10, on each arm while her daughters Zahara and Vivienne threw petals, and Shiloh and Knox served as ring bearers.

The secret wedding seems to have been a quiet affair although Brad’s brother Doug Pitt, sister Julie Neal and their respective families are believed to have been there.

  • Tata Sky demos 4K TV with FIFA World Cup quarter-final match

Tata Sky demos 4K TV with FIFA World Cup quarter-final match

MUMBAI: The era of India being a country that lags behind the more developed nations is gone. Indian  DTH operators in the country are waking up, ancticipating  future desires of Indian TV viewers. Which is why one of the oldest and largest DTH operators Tata Sky, is keeping itself and its subscribers up to date with the  introduction of its 4k Ultra HD service.

The first quarter of 2015 will see Tata Sky roll out its set top boxes (STBs) for its 4k Ultra HD service. The STBs are being made by Technicolor and are based on the high efficiency video coding (HEVC) format that 4k uses the world over. However, prices of the STB are not yet known as the DTH operator wants to reveal it closer to the commercial launch date.

At a demonstration event in Mumbai, Tata Sky along with Sony Six unveiled the 4k UHD service with a live uninterrupted broadcast of the France versus Germany FIFA World Cup 2014 quarter final. The FIFA 4k signal rights had been bought by Sony Six while the cost of acquisition and transmission was split 50:50 by the broadcaster and the operator. The telecast took place live via satellite transmission.

Indiantelevision.com readers will note that Videocon d2h had previewed its 4K service on 3 July 2014 too, a day before Tata Sky..

Even though most industry professionals  claim that it is too early to launch 4k Ultra HD in India, Tata Sky chief commercial officer Vikram Mehra feels otherwise. “When we launched HD in 2010, people doubted us saying it won’t work. As you keep enhancing TV experience, the viewer will appreciate it. So, Ultra HD is our endeavour in that area. A technology becomes popular when mainline pay-TV adopts it.”

Mehra feels that movies and sports will be the initial drivers for 4k technology and talks with broadcasters have already commenced. In three to four years, he expects it to be the way of life for most Indian TV viewers. Even though currently there is a lack of 4K content, he feels that it isn’t too far away. “We will make a product that makes sense to the customer. Customers will not buy STBs to adorn their homes. They will buy it for content,” he says.

Sony Six business head Prasana Krishnan feels that more sporting events should be produced in 4K soon, probably in the next year or so. “4K is the future of broadcasting, specially sports. We saw technology move from SD to HD and now HD has become standard. 4K is next,” he says. Krishnan is aware that a full-fledged 4K channel can’t be expected very soon. Big sporting events will have 4K production on crucial days such as the finals, while the run up matches will be in HD and SD.

The 4K screening of the FIFA World Cup 2014 quarter finals that took place in Mumbai yesterday, 4 July saw the Sony Six logo being superimposed on the FIFA feed on an 84 inch Sony television set that is soon to be launched in India and across the world. 4K screens give four times the clarity as compared to an HD feed.

Mehra  was not willing to venture any guesstimates about how much uptake the Tata Sky 4K service will have when it launches next year as he feels making futuristic statements is of no use. However, the fact that the DTH operator is confident about its prospects is clear from the contract that it has signed with Technicolor, according to which deliveries of 4K set top boxes in “volume” are expected to commence in early 2015.

Adds Mehra: “We started active service in 2007 and today we have 2.9million people paying Rs 45 each for them. Close to 65 per cent of our STBs sold today are HD. This from our total subscriber base of 13.5 million.” It is pertinent to note that Tata Sky, since late last year, has stopped buying any more SD boxes.

  • New Woody Allen film ‘Magic in the Moonlight’ trailer released

New Woody Allen film ‘Magic in the Moonlight’ trailer released

MUMBAI: Yahoo Movies has released the first look trailer of Woody Allen’s new movie Magic in the Moonlight. The movie comes after Allen’s Academy Award winning Blue Jasmine starring Cate Blanchett. Magic in the Moonlight is set in the 1920s France, rather reminiscent of the Academy Award winning Midnight in Paris.

It stars Colin Firth as Stanley, an Englishman posing as an Asian magician who attempts to debunk fake spiritualists. He travels to the south of France to unmask a supposed medium named Sophie (Emma Stone) as a good-looking fake — but ends up falling for her real-world charms instead.

“I had it on a piece of notepaper in my drawer for ages,” Allen told Entertainment Weekly on the film’s period European setting. “I knew it was a good plot, but I kept seeing it as a contemporary thing and something about that just didn’t smell right to me. Then when it occurred to me it could be set in the south of France in the 1920s, all of a sudden it just felt good.”

Magic in the Moonlight boasts an ensemble cast led by Academy Award winning Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) and Golden Globe Award nominee Emma Stone (Easy A) with Hamish Linklater (The Crazy Ones), Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden (Pollock), Academy Award nominee Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award winner Eileen Atkins (Gosford Park).

Imagine Midnight in Paris, with a Match Point and Scoop topping on a You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger cone! True fans of Woody Allen, that reference is for you!

It is currently the highest performing talent show on Keshet’s Channel 2. It has also performed extremely well in Hungary where its ratings exceeded TV2’s average for the timeslot by 250%.

RISING STAR is a trailblazing interactive talent format which hails a new era in home entertainment. It enables the first real-time voting by viewers via an innovative free app ‘TV app to you’ which is fully integrated into the show. Making their debut on stage alone, behind a giant wall of TV screens, a performer can only make his or her entry to the studio by securing more than 70% of the viewers’, judges’ and live audiences’ vote. If the bar is met, the screen (which lights up with the face of each voting viewer in real-time) will slowly rise to expose the hopeful to their new fans and the judging panel. From the very first minute of the very first episode, viewers will play an integral role in every decision made on the show and continue to do so throughout the entire season.

RISING STAR, produced by Tedy Productions for Keshet Broadcasting, marked a record-breaking debut on Keshet’s Channel 2 from September to December 2013, maintaining its audience throughout the full first season as the highest-rated show in 10 of its 15 weeks on air. Over 10 million votes were cast through the app during season one, which has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times. RISING STAR has far outperformed all second screen data ever recorded in Israel, with an activity rate 10 times higher than its nearest competitor. It maintained high ratings and conversion rates (i.e. viewers to second screen participation), in excess of 30%, throughout the series.

MASTER CLASS is a talent show full of heart, and no heartbreak! It is a music talent show for children singing old classics with only positive reviews and without elimination. It has become a critically acclaimed program that taps into the global trend of family viewing because of its warm and humane approach. MASTER CLASS avoids the intrigue and harsh judgment of a ruthless competition, focusing on the nurturing relationships formed between the teachers and their young students, as they become familiar with the country’s rich musical history and cultural heritage.

The sixteen stars of the show are children aged 8-14, with the most promising voices in the country. Four teachers – leading artists in the music industry – train them to make the most of their potential and become the best singers they can. The program is set at the music school and its auditorium, where the weekly performances take place. Towards the end of the season the best student in each performance is awarded a place in the graduation show. In this way, the six will sing for the last time in front of the committee, where one will be selected as the best in the class. Still, all the students continue their studies and perform at every show, including the final one.

Entitled School of Music in Israel, MASTER CLASS became a breakthrough hit oh Keshet Broadcasting Channel 2 – it was the 2nd highest rated show in in 2011, with a season average of 48.1% share and 32.5% rating.
