    Fox makes ‘24’, ‘The Shield’ available on iTunes

    MUMBAI: US broadcaster Fox and Apple have announced that shows from Fox, FX, Speed, Fuel TV and the 20th Century Fox Television library is now available for purchase on the iTunes Music Store (www.itunes.com).

    The launch, which features 16 series, including 24, Prison Break and The Shield is the largest to date on iTunes and spans several genres – drama, comedy and reality genres, plus several classic favorites. iTunes now offers over 90 TV shows for $1.99 per episode for viewing on a computer or iPod.

    Fox Digital Media president Peter Levinsohn said, “As this partnership demonstrates, were committed to delivering our content to consumers in as many ways as possible. Today, with some of the worlds premier television content, Fox is bringing unprecedented depth in a single launch to the iTunes store.”

    Fans can now purchase current dramas like 24 and Prison Break, comedies like Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Stacked; reality series, including Fox’s Unan1mous, FXs Black. White, and 30 Days; and favorites from the 20th Century Fox Television library, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Lost in Space.

    MUMBAI: Format owner Endemol USA has sold three game shows to ABC, Fox and NBC.

    Two of the shows, For The Rest of Your Life for ABC and Show Me The Money for Fox, are new formats from Dick de Rijk. He created Deal Or No Deal.

    1 versus 100 for NBC is from the Endemol catalogue. The shows are expected to air in the second half of this year initially in short runs of between five and 10 shows.

    Endemol USA president and CEO David Goldberg said, “There is undoubtedly a resurgence of game shows in the US and Endemol is leading the charge.”

    MUMBAI: Ford Motor Company has announced its plans to produce a TV competition on the theme of designing a dream car. As per the concept, the reality show participants will work on developing a concept car with Ford designers.

    Ford officials have been quoted in media reports as saying that the TV show will be shopped around in the hope of landing on a major TV network.

    The company also launched a promotional video of the show. Ad agency J. Walter Thompson has designed the video.
    The automobile major is one of two principal sponsors of the Fox’s American Idol reality show.

    Fox host Tony Snow to be named Bush spokesman

    MUMBAI: Conservative radio presenter Tony Snow is to be named as US President George W Bush’s new press secretary. Snow is expected to be named on 26 April. He replaces Scott McClellan, who resigned last week.

    The 50-year old Snow presently hosts two shows on the Rupert Murdoch-owned Fox News network, Tony Snow Show on Fox News Radio and Weekend Live with Tony Snow on the Fox News Channel. He has also served in the administration of President George H.W. Bush as White House speechwriting director and later as a deputy assistant to the president for media affairs.

    According to the US media reports, Snow however has declined to say whether he had been offered the job. The news was leaked by Republicans close to the White House, who said the press secretary’s job had been offered to Snow and that he had accepted.

    Fox, Toyota partner for ‘Prison Break’ mobisodes

    MUMBAI: A sponsorship deal has been signed between Fox Broadcasting and Toyota that will have the car maker as the primary advertiser for episodes of Prison Break set to air on mobile phones. Earlier this month, Fox had announced that it would be rebroadcasting its content on the internet, with a revenue share deal for its local station affiliates.

    Fox’s Prison Break will serve as the centerpiece of a new marketing partnership between several News Corporation divisions-including Fox, FX and Fox Mobile Entertainment-and Toyota that will include a series of mobisodes inspired by the show.

    The promotion coincides with the launch of Toyota’s new Yaris Liftback and Sedan and will comprise Fox Broadcasting, Fox Mobile Entertainment (FME), Fox Interactive Media (FIM) and the FX cable channel.

    The News Corp. subsidiary is teaming with Toyota to produce 26 short videos that are set to be released every few days for subscribers of Sprint Nextel Corp.’s Power Vision service.

    Saatchi & Saatchi LA will produce 10-second marketing messages for Toyota that will air at the beginning of each mobisode, followed by a two-minute episode that parallels the current Prison Break storyline.The Toyota vehicles will be prominently featured in the 26 mobisodes.

    Prison Break: Proof of Innocence introduces the character Amber McCall and follows her attempts to exonerate her friend L.J., who has disappeared after being framed for murder. L.J. is the son of the show’s lead character-death row prisoner Lincoln Burrows. The mobisode series is produced by Eric Young of Sparkhill, producer of the award-winning 24: Conspiracy series.

    Toyota VP of marketing Jim Farley noted, “We’re utilizing this emerging entertainment medium as a way to provide fans of Prison Break with details about the show courtesy of Yaris. Our partnership with Fox provides an exclusive portal to showcase Yaris to consumers in a fun way where they can discover more about the car on their own time.”

    Fox Interactive Media will also create a Toyota-branded Prison Break microsite within Fox.com, offering content tied to the series. Also, Fox is providing Toyota with “category exclusivity” for auto advertising during several upcoming Prison Break broadcasts, with the first airing today. Fox will also drive viewers to both the Toyota-branded microsite and the mobisodes with co-branded advertising in daily and weekly national publications. Toyota was also sponsor of the FX cable channel’s Prison Break marathon last month.

    Fox bids ‘Final Goodbye’ to ‘That 70’s Show’ next month

    MUMBAI: US broadcaster Fox bids farewell to one of its longest-running series the sitcom That 70’s Show next month.

    It will air the retrospective special That ’70s Show: The Final Goodbye on 11 May 2006. In India the show airs on Star World.

    The special celebrates 200 episodes and eight seasons by taking a look back at some of the most memorable moments from the show.

    The special will feature interviews with all the cast members and director, as well as past guest stars such as Brooke Shields, Bruce Willis, Luke Wilson, Lindsay Lohan and The Rock. It will also feature exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and up-close-and-personal segments taped with many of the cast.

    Additionally, the special will include outtakes from classic episodes and never-before-seen clips rescued from the editing room floor. The special will also give viewers an inside look at the final week of taping the show, including some of the funniest and most touching moments as the cast brings their eight-year journey to a close. The series finale and 200th episode of the sitcom airs on 18 May 2006.

    MUMBAI: Aspiring directors/filmmakers from across the US will get the opportunity of a lifetime.

    Reality TV guru Mark Burnett, director Steven Spielberg Munich, DreamWorks Television and Fox will join forces on a new reality show On The Lot.

    The competition will air over two nights weekly, with an hour Film Premiere episode, followed the next night by a half-hour Box Office results show. Ultimately, one filmmaker will rise above the rest and will be rewarded with a studio development deal. The show will kick off on Fox later this year.

    Burnett says, “For me, like any person who wants to be a filmmaker, the opportunity to work hand in hand with Steven Spielberg is a dream come true. With the help of our partners at Fox, Peter Liguori and reality maestro Mike Darnell, we are going to make an incredible show about looking for the next great filmmaker by mining the growing segment of the public making their own content, and giving them the chance of a lifetime.”

    Spielberg says, “All through my career I’ve done what I can to discover new talent and give them a start. This opportunity with Mark Burnett, DreamWorks and Fox allows all of us to reach out directly to open a much wider door.”
    Fox Entertainment president Peter Liguori says, “When you have the opportunity to work with people like Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg, artists who have redefined this business, you jump at the chance. In this age of digital cameras, cell phones with cameras and the Internet – with hundreds of thousands of people creating their own movies at home every day – the concept of this series is completely relevant, tapping into a cultural phenomenon as it happens.”

    Fox executive VP alternative programming Mike Darnell says, “Movie-making is completely relatable to the American public. Everyone enjoys going to the movies, reading about the movies and learning about the movies. Most Americans consider themselves amateur film critics and this will give viewers the opportunity to create the next big filmmaker.”

    After a search, applicants will be winnowed to a group of 16 undiscovered talents. The finalists will be brought to Hollywood, where they will be divided into several teams and will begin the hopeful journey toward their ‘big break’. As the competition begins, each team will produce a short film from that week’s genre, running the gamut from comedies to thrillers, personal dramas to romance, sci-fi to horror. With one member selected as the team’s director and other members helping produce, they’ll have access to the best resources the industry has to offer.

    A pool of professional writers, cast and crew will be made available, and if the contestants are resourceful enough, they may even be able to land Hollywood celebrities to star in their films. With the clock ticking, however, and other teams working with the same genre, premise or unique challenge, they’ll all need to match their vision with decisiveness, execution and flexibility.

    Each week, after the teams have battled time frames, budgets and all the usual chaos that goes along with filmmaking, their films will be shown and critiqued in front of a live audience during the “Film Premiere” episode. Judges will include a high-ranking motion picture executive, a prominent film critic and a succession of well-respected guest judges, such as directors who are experts in the week’s featured genre. But they’ll also be subjected to perhaps the harshest judge of all … the public.

    It will be Fox viewers whose votes ultimately determine which film should be left on the cutting-room floor. But, just as in Hollywood, where the director’s work and vision have an enormous impact on the success or failure of a film, not all team members will pay the price. On the next night’s Box Office results show, only the director of the losing feature will be sent home, leaving that team with fewer contestants to help produce the next week’s film.

    As the competition continues and directors are eliminated, eventually the remaining filmmakers will have to work individually, creating a new short film every week until only the most talented individual is anointed the winner, whisked away to the DreamWorks studio, met by Steven Spielberg and shown a new office … On The Lot.

    MUMBAI: Fox has announced that it will make a film based on the television series The Simpsons. the film will be released on 27 July 2007.

    Starring in the animated film are series regulars Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, Harry Shearer, Pamela Hayden, and Tress MacNeille. Guest starring in the movie are Erin Brockovich, Minnie Driver, and Albert Brooks.

    One of the film’s producers Matt Groening says, “We are very excited about the performances in this movie. Come next Oscars, we think it’s going to be Milhouse’s night”.

    Another producer Al Jean says, “I can absolutely guarantee that this film will far exceed the wildest expectations of every Simpsons fan. Start lining up at the theater now, preferably in costume.”

    MGM to launch new media division

    MUMBAI: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) has launched a new media division. Douglas A. Lee will oversee the new unit as executive VP.

    Lee will oversee MGM’s digital distribution strategy. He will also spearhead the studio’s broadband and wireless efforts and shepherd new digital media growth.

    MGM chairman, CEO Harry E. Sloan said, “MGM will be making significant moves in terms of new platforms, ranging from TV and the Internet to wireless, mobile and more. Doug has a wealth of senior management experience culled from several major media companies including Fox, HBO and Universal. This and his proven track record in new media will be a great benefit and addition to MGM’s already outstanding team. I am thrilled to have him at the helm as we capitalise on the myriad opportunities in the digital space.”

    MGM COO Rick Sands says, “Doug is an expert at navigating the new media space and identifying key opportunities. He will also be working closely with our strategic partner, Sony Corporation of America, which is at the forefront of Blu-ray and major electronic and digital initiatives.”

    Lee says, “There are numerous opportunities to grow and extend the MGM brand in the new media age. We will look to mine the library for new opportunities and also create new productions and initiatives for the plethora of new media opportunities that currently exist, as well as plan for new and emerging possibilities.”

    With over 20 years experience as a senior executive in the global entertainment business, Lee’s career highlights include the launch of HD Cinema 10 for Voom, the creation of Noggin, the first educational children’s network and a joint venture between Sesame Workshop and Nickelodeon; a founder of Crime, a broadband platform that was sold to USA Cable; and he was instrumental in spearheading News Corp.’s acquisition of Star-TV.
