    MUMBAI: Viacom18 Studios, India’s premiere content studio in association with Aamir Khan Productions announces their upcoming Indian film LAAL SINGH CHADDHA, inspired by Paramount Pictures’ Oscarâ winning movie, FORREST GUMP. While Aamir Khan essays the titular role in the film, Kareena Kapoor Khan will be seen paired opposite him for the third time. The superhit duo has shared screen space in the past in 3 Idiots and Talaash. Laal Singh Chaddha is directed by Advait Chandan of Secret Superstar fame and is being written by Atul Kulkarni. The film will release in Christmas 2020.

    FORREST GUMP, starring the Academy Awardâ winner Tom Hanks, is a 1994 American comedy-drama film based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Winston Groom. The story depicts several decades in the life of Forrest Gump (Hanks), a slow-witted but kind-hearted man from Alabama who witnesses and unwittingly influences several defining historical events in the 20th century in the United States. The film was directed by Robert Zemeckis.

    Youku Tudou licenses Paramount’s movie titles for TVOD

    MUMBAI: China’s Youku Tudou, Inc has entered into a content licensing agreement with Paramount Pictures that will bring more than a hundred film titles from Paramount Picture’s library to Youku Tudou.

     

    Popular franchises and titles such as Transformers, Shrek, Star Trek, Mission: Impossible and Forrest Gump will be viewable through Youku Tudou’s subscription service and select future Paramount releases will be available through TVOD.

     

    Youku Tudou’s subscription service currently offers a wide selection of content from both foreign and domestic studios. More licensed content as well as Youku Tudou web-native content will be added on an ongoing basis.

     

    “The consumer-driven demand for premium online services in China is growing rapidly. With top branded content such as Paramount Picture’s array of films, our commitment to enhancing our subscription services to create a premium experience and drive consumer-based revenue continues in earnest,” said Youku Tudou chairman and CEO Victor Koo.

     

    With this agreement, Youku Tudou now has a library of over 4,000 movie titles that encompass domestic, foreign and original productions.

    MUMBAI: US media conglomerate Viacom has decided to explore strategic alternatives to maximise the value of Famous Music, its music publishing business.

    It could sell the business. The company has retained UBS Investment Bank to act as financial advisor to assist in this process.

    Famous Music was founded in 1928 by Paramount Pictures’ predecessor, the Famous-Lasky Corporation, to publish music from its “talking pictures”. Today the firm says that it is one of the top 10 music publishers in the US, supplying music to a diversified range of global media.

    Its catalogue of more than 125,000 copyrights spans seven decades and includes music from films like The Godfather, Forrest Gump and Titanic, as well as classic television shows including The Brady Bunch, Cheers and the Star Trek franchise.

    Since 1992, Famous Music has moved into the mainstream of contemporary music with such platinum-plus acts as Shakira, Akon, Eminem and Busta Rhymes. Writers and producers on the Famous roster include Irv Gotti, 7 Aurelius, Linda Perry, Tia Sillers, Charlie Midnight, and Marvin Hamlisch.

    MGM Studios fires up domestic theatrical distribution unit

    MUMBAI: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) announced the revitalisation of MGM’s domestic theatrical distribution business with a new strategy that calls for the release of several high profile films this year. The company named a new senior management team that will drive the growth of the distribution business and announced its 2006-2007 slate of theatrical releases.

    MGM’s theatrical distribution unit will now be overseen by MGM chief operating officer Rick Sands. He most recently served as the president and COO of DreamWorks SKG and is the former COO of Miramax Films and has built an experienced team of executives to manage MGM’s domestic distribution.

    Paramount Pictures veteran Clark Woods will serve as president, domestic theatrical distribution of MGM. In his new role, Woods, a 25-year veteran of Paramount Pictures, will supervise all aspects of theatrical distribution.

    During his tenure with Paramount Pictures, Woods was involved with and spearheaded the distribution of films such as Titanic, Braveheart, Forrest Gump, Ordinary People, Raider’s of the Lost Ark, Terms of Endearment, Beverly Hills Cop, Mission: Impossible and War of the Worlds.

    “We have an exceptional team in place to drive the growth of MGM’s domestic theatrical distribution. We expect that re-invigorating our distribution business in North America will pave the way for MGM to regain its prominence as a major force in providing new quality filmed entertainment on a global basis. As part of this strategy, we are pleased to announce an exciting slate of theatrical releases in 2006 and in the first quarter of 2007, involving many of the best actors, producers and directors in the business,” said MGM chairman and CEO Harry E Sloan.

    MGM’s next release will be Lucky Number Slevin, which is scheduled to be released on 7 April in association with The Weinstein Company..

    “We are rapidly expanding MGM’s distribution business. Going forward, through partnerships with independent production companies and studios, we plan to continually build an outstanding slate of releases. Working with these independent production companies, will enable us to focus on North American distribution as well as rights management worldwide. The future is about content and we are working to freshen and bulk up our world-class library, which will further enhance the value of the company,” said Sands.

    MGM’s films (with video rights) will be distributed in the home video marketplace by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and also be made available on the Blu-Ray format.
