  • Content explosion an opportunity for TV

Content explosion an opportunity for TV

CANNES: “It is all about opportunities and it isn’t simple. Opportunity involves risk and in many instances, feels threatening,” said DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg.

Named ‘Personality of the Year’, Katzenberg was delivering the key note speech at Mipcom. “If one person seizes a new opportunity, then someone else has to lose ground,” he added.

Speaking about the evolving television, film and online video markets, he said: “Over the next two years, there will be an explosion of content on the web. In the 40 years I’ve been in the entertainment industry, I don’t think there’s ever been a time filled with so much new and unique opportunity for the world of television.”

After a successful stint in the film industry, DreamWorks has expanded its footprint to television production and distribution. The production house recently struck a deal with Netflix for providing more than 300 hours of original content, acquired the YouTube multi-channel network AwesomenessTV and partnered with RTL Disney Fernsehen.

Dispelling fears that the era of TV was coming to an end, Katzenberg said, “Linear TV will do just fine, even with the internet explosion.”

Taking the audience through historical advancements since the invention of the printing press in 1445, he said, “Throughout history, it has never been seen that one form of media was replaced by the other newly launched technology.”

A firm believer in the concept that each technology imparts a new role to that which has come before it, he said: “Because there are so many emerging distribution options, there will inevitably be more demand for content.”

Regarding the AwesomenessTV acquisition, Katzenberg said: “The deal gets us directly in touch with our teen audience in a way that we simply can’t with movies or TV shows. Just like an additional layer in a parfait, the entire media experience simply becomes richer and more satisfying.”

He pitched for mobile entertainment as a solution to the problem of ‘waiting’ saying: “Up until very recently, we literally twiddled our thumbs while we waited. There was nothing else to do. Now our thumbs have a higher purpose than to twiddle. Through touch screens, we actually now can touch the world. Thanks to these devices, ‘waiting’ as we know it, is dead.”

“Mobile has become an asset to traditional TV, rather than a threat. There is a crossover phenomenon happening in the relationship between mobile and linear TV. For instance, AwesomenessTV created a show by compiling the best clips from its YouTube channel and airing it on Nickelodeon. Mobile serves as an incubator of talent and concepts, driving additional traffic to traditional TV.”

Katzenberg concluded his keynote by expressing a need for great storytellers. “Storytelling – in any medium – is very difficult, and great storytellers are difficult to find. Whether the media is old or new, content continues to reign as king. And this is because – like all royalty – it is rare. Once the touch of great storytellers is added, touch screens can take us anywhere and everywhere,” he rounded off.

  • ABP News presents the 1st television show on comedians of the film industry

ABP News presents the 1st television show on comedians of the film industry

The series ‘Mera Naam Joker’ on ABP News is about the unsung Heroes of Hindi Cinema-the Comedians. This series is a tribute to all those comic artists who brought laughter into the lives of their millions of fans, but never got their rightful place in the Indian cinema.
Their fascinating story will be narrated by the inimitable television host & actor Shekhar Suman. Shekhar, who has previously hosted very successful shows like Poll Khol and Movers & Shakers, is coming back on television with Mera Naam Joker.Talking about the show, Shekhar says, ‘Normally the film-based shows talk only about the reigning stars of cinema. But the premise of this show is different and very fascinating. Here we are talking about the brilliant comedy actors of Hindi cinema. Some of the comedy actors were outstanding and commanded their own fan following. But somehow they were lost in glamour and glitter of the film industry. There are so many stories related to them that will be shown in the show.”
So many popular comic actors of Hindi cinema created magic and laughter with their brilliant comic timing, distinct style and sparkling sense of humor. The people who brought laughter on the faces of millions of fans through their on-screen antics, have some very interesting off-screen stories to tell. This is a series celebrating the life and times of the famous comic actors.

The show also explains how some comic actors riding on their sheer talent had become bigger than many lead actors of their times. Some of them even allege that the big stars conspired against them. This series will demonstrate a different facet of cinema that is entertaining as well as informative.
It is ironical that all the big stars of Hindi cinema are scared of being labeled as good comedy actors because in Hindi cinema, good acting is always synonymous with serious ‘intense’ roles. These are the roles for which they get best actor awards.Though all the stars agree that comedy roles are difficult to perform as compared to the so-called ‘intense’ roles. Yet they are terrified of being typecast as comedians. In Hindi Cinema, Comedy and Comedians generally do not get their rightful respect.
The series will talk about the ace comedians of the hindi cinema. There have been many artistes- Johny Walker, Mehmood, Jagdeep, to Rajendra Nath, Asrani and Johny Lever. Each with a distinct comic style and a very interesting story about how they became an on-screen Joker. What was so special about their styles of comedy?
The series is hosted by popular television host Shekhar Suman. He is a part of the film industry since last three decades. He has personally known many comic actors of Hindi cinema and has some very interesting anecdotes to tell the audience. He says, “This is an important show in the history of film journalism. The research team of ABP News has worked very hard in bringing some interesting and unheard facts about these comedy actors. Do you know Asrani’s mannerisms in Sholay were inspired by Hitler? Why did many super stars refused to work with Comedian Mehmood? There are many such interesting anecdotes in the show. I can say that the series Mera Naam Joker will be loved by the audience.”
The USP of the series is its meticulous research by the team of ABP News. The production values are grand of this in-house production of ABP News. Mera Naam Joker will make you laugh and make you think as well.

  • Budget: Film industry reacts positively

    Budget: Film industry reacts positively

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: The film industry has reacted positively to the Budget for 2012-13, describing it as a special gift in 2012 that marks the beginning of the centenary year of Indian cinema.

The exemption of the film industry from service tax on copyrights relating to recording of cinematographic films is a welcome step that would go on to support the industry that has seen many ups and downs in recent years.

Said Reliance Entertainment CEO Sanjeev Lamba, “With no service tax now on transfer of copyrights, and entertainment becoming a part of the negative list, this is a huge positive for the industry. There will however be a negative impact due to the general increase in service tax, excise and custom duties. The determination of bringing GST from 12 August sounds quite optimistic. It will bring radical and positive changes in the taxation.”

The Film Federation of India and film exhibitors have welcomed the announcement in the Budget taking “admission to entertainment or access to amusement services” out of the domain of service tax.

FFI President Vinod Lamba welcomed the exemption of the film industry from service tax on copyrights relating to recording of cinematographic films.

Producer Mukesh Bhatt is delighted with the government’s decision to exempt the film industry from service tax. He said, “There couldn’t be such a gift to the film industry that is celebrating its 100th year. With the removal of service tax on copyrights relating to recording of cinematographic films, the Finance Minister has saved us from the repercussion we had to go through passing the service tax burden from the producer to the distributor to the exhibitor. The economics of our business will definitely change.”

Reacting to the concessions, Bharatiya Janata Party member and prominent film personality Shatrughan Sinha told indiantelevision.com that these concessions had been long overdue and the government had been turning a deaf ear to them until the industry began putting pressure.

Film and Television Producers Guild CEO Kulmeet Makkar said in a telephonic interview that this was perhaps the first time that the Government had shown that the film industry mattered to it. He said that taking cinema out of the service tax net was a very positive development.

He said it was also very heartening that incentives had been given to venture capitalists, and this would bring in more people to stake money on good cinema.

It may be recalled that the Indian film industry had represented that colour, unexposed jumbo rolls of cinematographic film are not manufactured domestically and have to be imported. Heeding to their demands, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee proposed to exempt jumbo rolls of 400 feet and 1,000 feet from CVD (countervailing duty) by providing full exemption from excise duty.

However, the raising of the service tax has grieved a few. Cinemax CEO Sunil Punjabi said, “The impact of service tax moving from 10 to 12 per cent will adversely impact profitability but the positive angle is the implementation of goods and services tax (GST) from this year. That will have a positive impact.”
