Germany prevails as host nation reduced to 7-1

MUMBAI: The most anticipated clash between Brasil and Germany turned out to be the most shocking match. Germany defeated the host nation 7-1 in the semifinal match on Tuesday to earn a berth in the finals.

The Brasilians’ managed to score a single goal in the dying moments which was too late as Germany took the lead with a string of goals in fast succession. In just the first 30 minutes of play, Germany took the lead with five goals including a record-setting 16th from Miroslav Klose.

Doubts prevailed that it would be a tough battle for Brasil as its star striker NeymarJr was injured and captain Thiago Silva was suspended for the semifinals.

The fever in Brasil translated on twitter making it the most-discussed single sports game ever on Twitter. There were a total of 35.6 million tweets about the game during the match window. The most mentioned Brasilian players were Julio Cesar , midfielder Oscar who scored the lone goal and centre forward, Fred. From the German side Miroslav Klose, Toni kroos and Thomas Muller were the top three mentioned players.

In addition to a goal Klose scored, Toni Kroos scored twice for the Germans in two minutes, and Thomas Mueller and Sami Khedira added the others.

Brasil has not lost an official competitive match on home soil since 1975.

Mueller scored the first goal, one-timing a corner from Kroos past Cesar in the 11th minute. Khedira made it 5-0 in the 29th, taking a pass from Mesut Ozil and again beating Cesar.

Brasil has spent billions of dollars preparing for the tournament, with expectations that home advantage could deliver Brasil a sixth title. The huge spends had also ignited intense anger and protests against the World Cup. With disappointment flowing in, the Brasilians seated at the stadium started to chant against their President  “Hey, Dilma, go get ****ed in the ***!” at about the 40th minute. The chants lasted for about three minutes.

  • FIFA World Cup: Sony Six & Sony Aath TVT & reach report

FIFA World Cup: Sony Six & Sony Aath TVT & reach report

MUMBAI: As the final  of the 2014 FIFA World Cup draws closer, fans across the world are waiting with bated breath along with the official broadcaster of the game: Sony Six as to which team will lift the much coveted trophy. Even in India, the tournament has been gathering a lot of buzz in the media and on social media.

It seems to be doing well in terms of TV viewership as well as football fans get red-eyed late into the night watching their favourites play. In the first week of the telecast of the World Cup, Sony Six had an all India reach of 12,469,000 while Sony Aath’s reach was 3,114,000. Combined, the two channels had a total reach of 14,792,000 in the C&S 4 plus years group. In the same week, while Six recorded a reach of 3,056,000 in the West Bengal market, Sony Aath’s reach was 3,043,000.

The second week proved to be even more fruitful for the channels with Sony Aath’s reach soaring to 5,589,000 in the West Bengal market. Within Kolkata, the reach of the Bengali channel was 2,561,000 for the first week while in the second week it rose to 4,427,000.

What is interesting to see is, while the channels reach increased in the first two weeks of the World Cup, TVTs  have a different story to tell. So, amongst males in the C&S 15 plus age group, while Sony Aath recorded 173 TVTs in the West Bengal market in week one, it dropped to 154 TVTs in the second week. For Sony Six, the all India ratings in the same category were 613 TVTs in the first week, which saw a huge drop in the second week to  453 TVTs.

GroupM ESP national director Vinit Karnik says the drop in TVTs as the tournament progresses is no cause for concern as it has more to do with the number of matches per week decreasing as it enters the knock out phase and the various national teams start getting eliminated.   “The drop has nothing to do with fans and their interest in the game,” he says.

There is other  good news as well. As per week 26 of TAM TV ratings, Sony Aath has seen a rise in female viewership in the 15 plus age group for the World Cup in West Bengal. The channel recorded an average of  152 TVTs for the telecast of the matches 1-27. That is a four per cent increase over the 146 TVTs that  ESPN Star Sports (the then official broadcaster)  managed during the telecast of the 2010 World Cup.

Karnik adds, “As compared to the male viewership, this growth among female viewers can be attributed to  young girls who are mainly herd followers of the game. They follow the game out of fan following (of players) or because of common peer interest”

On the whole, Sony Six (all India)  and Sony Aath recorded 483 TVTs and 161 TVTs (combined  total:  644 TVTs) for matches 1-27.

Telecasting most of the matches at prime time has definitely paid off, it appears. Especially if one looks at the numbers that the Germany vs Portugal match on 16 June (telecast time 9:30 pm) racked up: 1,514 TVTs on Sony Six and 393 TVTs on Sony Aath. Combined the two channels garnered 1,907 TVTs for the match, making it the highest rated one so far.

MUMBAI: The 2014 FIFA World Cup has gripped the nation, and if one thought it was only a man’s game, the TAM TV ratings for FIFA World Cup on Sony Aath will prove them wrong.

As per the week 26 of TAM TV ratings, Sony Aath from the Multi Screen Media stable has seen a rise in the female viewership in the 15 plus age group. The channel saw a four per cent hike, from the 146 TVTs that ESPN Star Sports (the then official broadcaster of FIFA) received during the FIFA World Cup 2010 telecast to 152 TVTs it has got in the current season.

In the first week of the telecast of FIFA World Cup, Sony Six had an all India reach of 12,469,000 while Sony Aath’s reach was 3,114,000. Combined, the two channels had a total reach of 14,792,000 in the CS 4+ years group.

In the second week of FIFA World Cup, Sony Aath’s reach increased to 5,589,000 in the West Bengal market. Within Kolkata, the reach of Sony Aath was 2,561,000 for the first week while in the second week it rose to 4,427,000.

For Sony Six, the all India ratings in the same category was 613 TVTs in the first week, which saw a huge drop in the second week, as it recorded 453 TVTs.

As of the current ratings, Sony Six (all India) has recorded 483 TVTs and Sony Aath has garnered 161 TVTs, combined the two have scored 644 TVTs.

Telecasting most of the matches at prime time has definitely paid off since the Germany versus Portugal match on 16 June telecasted at 9:30 pm

  • Get, set, goal…

    Get, set, goal…

MUMBAI: A mysterious calm surrounds the sets of Café Rio and Football Extraaa, the two shows on Sony Six especially created for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The atmosphere is calm and dark, but then as a few spot boys enter, the eeriness begins to drift.

As lights are lit, the crimson yellow, flame orange and sky blue colors of Brasil bring the set to life.

Café Rio, a live primetime show at 8 pm leading up to the match kick-offs, entails interesting facts about victorious teams, historical venues and stalwart players along with in-depth analysis and discussion about squads, player forms, group standings and strategies.

The adjacent set belongs to the live breakfast show Football Extraa, which is aired between 8 am to 9 am, relives the excitement and fun of the previous day matches.

The two sets are designed with hand painted cutouts and buntings along with touch screen graphic screens. The innovatively created Café Rio set could have been created anywhere between the price range of 8 to 10 lakhs while the small scale Football Extraa set would be within the range of 5 to 6 lakhs.

As several hands begin to spruce up the set, in walks the dapper Indian football team captain and panelist Sunil Chhetri who finds the set as an invigorating mix of colour and energy which helps him identify with the action in Brasil. Soon follows the make-up man to give him the right touchup over his clean shaven face.

When questioned about the most surprising moment for him this World Cup, he raises his brow and matter-of-factly states, “It was definitely Chile beating Spain. Netherlands as a team too have done their homework.”

He adds, “Thanks to Sony Six I am having a gala time. It’s been a combination of work and pleasure for me. I do my research well in advance and try to bring my knowledge to the table.”

The shows need a tremendous amount of research and insight. The research team comprises of two people who are the ‘Wikipedia’ of football and act as statisticians too. The blueprint of the show is prepared in the morning while the information is computed three and a half hours before the show begins.

A total of 120 people complete the production and post-production teams led by three senior producers and a senior executive producer which also includes camera persons and spot boys.

The production and research teams work on the graphics together on the analysis software provided by wTVision. A total of five high definition (HD) cameras and a jib capture the various set angles.

The anchor and the studio guests, who arrive just two hours earlier, are briefed about the day’s happenings. Their inputs too are taken into consideration, especially the narration style.

Amidst the chaos, noiselessly walks in British sports presenter, Joe Morrison, who gobbles down two to three bananas hiding from other’s eyes.

As we settle down to interview him, the slender presenter goes down memory lane and says that though the 1982 WC holds close to his heart, he isn’t complaining about the current one as well.

When quizzed about the football scene in India, he quickly replies: “It has been steady. Pessimists say there is no talent. I think this thought is Bu**Sh**! Over the last eight to nine years, the appetite for football has grown in India. There is no shortage of talent here. The fundamental problem is that no one is searching for the right talent.”

When asked which is the team he is supporting ardently? A crafty grin says it all. “England and it will always be England. But I do have a soft spot for Brasil,” he confesses.

The set goes hush as it’s time to shoot before the big game. As the two guests, Robbie Fowler and Sunil Chhetri along with host Joe Morrison take their seats; loud voices turn into whispers as the floor manager commands everyone to put their mobile phones on silent mode. Everyone obeys.

The final countdown to the show, produced at Reliance MediaWorks located in the heart of Filmcity, begins.

As the producers’ voice nears 3,2,1… Morrison’s crystal clear voice rings in the air… “Someone is going home, tonight!”

400 private websites restrained from beaming FIFA

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court issued an injunction order restraining around 400 private websites from beaming the World Cup Football FIFA matches.

The vacation bench of Justice V Kameswar Rao gave a directive to the Department of Information Technology and Telecom to ensure implementation of the order of the court. He directed that his directive would be forwarded to the concerned ministry.

The judge, who listed the matter to come up in the last week of July, gave the directive after hearing Saikrishna Rajagopal who was arguing on behalf of Multi Screen Media Entertainment (Sony) which holds the exclusive rights for beaming the matches in India.

The sports arm of MSM, Sony Six, is the official broadcaster of the football extravaganza, while its digital platform LIVSports.in has the exclusive rights to live stream the event.

The network had moved the court after it found out that several unauthorized websites were streaming the World Cup matches.

India to lead increased ad spends in BRIC countries: Warc

NEW DELHI: Global advertising expenditure is forecast to grow by 5.6 per cent at current prices in 2014, rising to 5.3 per cent in 2015.

According to Warc’s latest International Ad Forecast, the BRIC countries led by India are expected to post the largest ad spend increase this year, although their impressive rates of growth are forecast to be much lower in real terms once inflation is taken into account.

Ad spend growth is forecast to rise 14 per cent in India (5.6 per cent adjusted for inflation), 12.4 per cent in Brazil (6 per cent), 12.3 per cent in China (9.5 per cent), and 8.6 per cent in Russia (2.2 per cent).

In its previous report published in October 2013, Warc anticipated global growth of 4.4 per cent in 2014 based on its analysis of 12 leading markets – Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK and the US.

However, improved trading conditions, greater economic stability and an expected stimulus from major sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup and the Sochi Winter Olympics has led to a more positive outlook.

In the more established markets, the UK is forecast to record the highest rate of growth on 5.8 per cent (3.8 per cent adjusted for inflation), closely followed by the US at 5.6 per cent (3.8 per cent).

At current prices, they will be followed by Canada (3.2 per cent), Australia (2.9 per cent), Japan (2.3 per cent), Germany (2 per cent), Italy (0.7 per cent) with France trailing on 0.2 per cent projected growth.

“This year is set to record the highest annual rate of growth since 2010, when the industry was bouncing back from recession,” said Warc data and journals director Suzy Young.

“This is largely because the outlook for the global economy is now stabilising and advertisers are starting to feel confident about making additional investments,” she explained.

Looking to 2015, all 12 markets are expected to show growth in ad spend at current prices, with India increasing its ad spend at the fastest rate of 13.5 per cent.

  • Discussion around FIFA should not be just about viewership: Mallikarjun Das

Discussion around FIFA should not be just about viewership: Mallikarjun Das

MUMBAI:  With ever changing media dynamics, consumption patterns have been fluctuating too. Media fragmentation is a concern that media planners need to deal with more care.  Thereby, what comes as a challenge to a planner is when brands want to collaborate with large scale properties such as an IPL or FIFA World Cup.

As second screens play an integral role in a viewer’s life, catering to them uniquely also comes as a strategic challenge to media planners.

In conversation with indiantelevisiom.com, Starcom Media Vest Group (SVG) India CEO Mallikarjun Das elaborates his views on evolving aspects in media planning, changing viewership patterns of a large scale property like FIFA World Cup, SVG’s away ahead and much more.

    Excerpts…

Understanding that there is media fragmentation in India what are the key challenges that come on the way of media planning?

Media fragmentation has been around for sometime. It is nothing new. The challenge is integrating multiple sources of data and using a judicious mix of rationality and intuition in making choices. Increasingly one sees that media planning in the traditional media has become a gut-feel driven game. There has been measurement currency devaluation. Too many voices have jumped in to put down the currency be it TV or print, instead of working around the limitations.

On the digital side, we know that reach is increasing but there are challenges of measurement and proof of performance to surmount. All in all, these are great challenges, and we would rather have these problems to surmount than otherwise!

Do you think that clients in India are taking steps when it comes to experimenting with innovations and new media tools?

Experimenting has always been there but sometimes experimentation can be an enemy and a limitation. For instance, take digital. For too long, FMCG clients have treated it as a medium for experimentation and innovation instead of it being ‘business as usual’. This itself is one of the reasons for the slow digital transition amongst TV heavy clients. Yes, experimentation is important but unless one builds proof-points in the organisation and scales up, it remains in the cute realm.

What are the best practices in India that the rest of the world could benefit from?

India has vibrant media market place. Look at the choices that exist for a media planner to optimise – both within a medium and across media. In fact, a problem-seeking mind should treat this as the best possible epoch to be a media planner. However, I would rather talk about what India should learn from rest of the world.

The media planning community needs to optimise – cut and trim the fat that often rests in traditional, habit driven choices we make in media plans. Data has to be at the heart of decision-making. I do not think this is the case. Too much of money is wasted in low leverage gut-based decisions. Specifically, we need to be accelerating the digital transition – a focus on TV and print optimisation, video neutral planning, and measurement metrics are what we need to learn from rest of the world. See China for instance – Starcom Media Vest has seen several FMCG clients there who have transitioned from less than 5 per cent to 25 per cent of their ad spending going to digital on the back of those three things.

Since the FIFA fever has hit the world, how do you think the viewership patterns will look for a property of this scale?

FIFA will garner substantial viewership in SEC AB as well as amongst the 15- 34 age groups. There will be certain pockets of the country where the viewership will be universal. There is no doubt that the millennial would be on FIFA.

An index that could give one a sense of the popularity is the ‘Share of Voice’ that FIFA related content has on Facebook. Given that the reach of Facebook in India is in excess of 100 million, the volume of conversation around football would give a pretty good indication of its popularity. My hunch is that the number will be very high.

As far as ratings are concerned that number might not be very high – driven by the fact that niche phenomenon will not be captured precisely and the timing of the matches. Hence a discussion around FIFA should not be just about viewership. For a brand to maximise mileage from a property like this, going on multiple media platforms is critical.

Which brands according to you have collaborated with FIFA?

In fact, I find this a bit disappointing. FIFA is an awesome platform for many Indian brands to build on their equities of youthfulness and being international. Barring a few conventional associations, I have not seen anything that is mind-boggling.

How has the business been in the H1 of 2014 for SVG?

Business has been good in a slow, cautious environment. H1 2014 has been sluggish in terms of ad-spends. The economy had slowed down to a GDP growth of 4.7 per cent. The rate of growth consumption demand too had slowed down. This has reflected in a cautious worldview amongst marketers toward ad-spends. But with every challenge there is an opportunity – we have seen a faster uptake of digital amongst our clients. SMG India is the Global Centre of Excellence for Analytics.

We have seen this contribute substantially to our topline and bottom-line growth in H1. In the last six months, we have executed revenue generating analytics projects for SMG from US, UK, Italy, Australia and Middle-East. Starcom Media Vest India’s analytics team has won international awards and presented papers in prestigious forums such as ESOMAR in Jakarta, Advertising Research Foundation’s Seminar in NY and at the Predictive Analytics World Conference in Chicago. We have built world-class capability on this front and are well placed as an organisation for the data driven, precision marketing transition that will take place in media planning over the next 12 to 24 months.

What are plans lined up by SVM for the coming months?

Our focus will be client–delight, product, growth and training. SMG sees itself as a strategic partner to its clients with its product predicated on the principles of brilliant basics, digital, data and analytics. We will look at building new paradigms of planning that would help optimise the TV and print investments of our clients.

We are already ahead of the market in terms of being one of the few agencies with a capability to do video neutral planning. Digital transition, for the right reasons, will be a spotlight for the agency. Also, we strongly believe that real-time data driven marketing and media planning is the future. This will continue to be an area of thrust. Training is another area for us in which we plan to make substantial investments in 2014.
