Gubbara Ent announces million dollar script development fund in Cannes

Mumbai: As Indian films make waves across the globe and this year at Cannes with a film in each section of the festival, India’s Gubbara Entertainment is geared towards further championing Indian storytelling.

A step towards this direction, Gubbara Entertainment founder &  producer Dimpy Agrawal announced a groundbreaking $1 million script development fund aimed at empowering Indian feature filmmakers. The announcement was made at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, where she and her team are additionally exploring co-productions across a slate developed by them.

Reaffirming Gubbara Entertainment’s dedication to nurturing creativity and innovation in Indian cinema, Agrawal stated, “At Gubbara Entertainment, we recognise the transformative influence of storytelling. Our mission with this development fund is to champion diverse voices and narratives in cinema, resonating locally and globally. As young members of the film fraternity, we were eager to be the change we aspire to see, thus giving birth to the idea of this development fund.”

This significant move heralds a pivotal moment for the Indian film industry, establishing it as one of the few with a dedicated development fund for filmmakers. • Odisha’s OTT platform, AAO NXT enchants audiences with exciting and original content

Odisha’s OTT platform, AAO NXT enchants audiences with exciting and original content

Mumbai: Kaushik Das’ love for technology inspired him to start his new venture, AAO NXT – the premium and most entertaining Odia platform, which is currently bringing a path-breaking change in the OTT market.

The platform is slowly foraying into the Odia OTT market and offering audience ‘originals’ like never before. It is Odisha’s first independent platform that aims at showcasing short films, web series, feature films and documentaries. “So far, the platform has 700 short films from across the globe and a bouquet of classic Odia films from the 60-70s era, which are streaming on the AAO NXT platform. We have 400 odd Telugu and Tamil films in our library,” AAO NXT’s chief financial officer Ram Patnaik tells Indiantelevision.com.

Having produced some of the most successful and marvelous shows on the streaming platform, Patnaik reveals that the home-grown brand AAO NXT has a diverse mix of content slate that is winning the hearts of the audience. The content portfolio of the platform builds a high level of excitement and entertains consumers in multiple ways with endless experiences and innovations ranging from thrillers, crimes, dramas and many more. Showcasing some interesting content slate like Club 69-a web series, “Ardha Satya”- an action drama film, and “Kokoli”- an award-winning Odia film, “Four” -a first of its kind Anthology, the OTT platform looks to embark on a new process of storytelling that allures viewers. Patnaik expresses the upcoming releases like “Capital Talkies”, “Jajabara 2.0”, Anthony -a web series, “Suka Bhaira Sholay”, Maliput Melodies-a web series, and Mandara: The Hibiscus is likely to provide audiences with some enticing storytelling. These new films and shows are expected by December 2022.

AAO NXT means ‘All about originals’”, he says and reveals that the Odia entertainment and media industry has a dearth of original stories, and the objective of AAO NXT is to provide indigenous, exclusive and unique stories that can stimulate and delight the viewers. Patnaik sees a vast opportunity in the Odia market, he has confidence in exhibiting extraordinary storytelling to the audience, which can create wonders in the Odia OTT space. The content library of AAO NXT is exemplary and focuses on original storytelling, and is likely to nudge it further, irrespective of the language.

    The growth prospects

Since its inception in 2020, AAO NXT has garnered the attention of a lot of viewers, pushing its revenue growth further. The platform is expected to touch a revenue growth of Rs 5 crore in 2022 with a 50,000 subscriber base. Patnaik added, “We are working currently on a complete subscription video on demand (SVOD) model. We expect to reach Rs 15 crore in 2023 in terms of revenue growth.”

“We target to double our subscriber base. By December 2023, we expect to reach two lakh subscribers. The model will not only be SVOD, and the platform will explore advertising-based video on demand (AVOD) as well. So we expect considerable and significant growth in advertising revenue in the future,” he adds.

To fascinate the advertisers, AAO NXT targets to add more original content, which will build trust and facilitate the growth of the platform. “The advertisers will show interest in advertising on the platform only if we create original content. The idea is to tell original stories in different languages. It is not restricted only to Odia – we are also venturing out into other languages. For instance, we will enter into the Bengali and Assamese markets, and capture them. We have plans to enter the Malayalam market to explore exclusive content. We have started from Odisha but will tell original stories from all across India,” Patnaik tells Indiantelevision.com.

    Stream original content

Keeping in mind the burgeoning demand of audiences from across the world, AAO NXT is focusing on inspiring the audience with India-based original content. “There is an opportunity to stream Indian-based original content. We are streaming those stories on our platform, which are original, simple and easy to understand. Indian content has been appreciated by audiences from all across the world.”

His and Kaushik Das’ vision is to make AAO NXT “the Netflix of Southeast Asia,” Patnaik says. “The idea is to scale up the operations and showcase a variety of content from across the world. Netflix is an inspiration because the platform is producing original stories day in and day out, year after year,” he adds further.

He highlights that there are 4.5 crore Odia people and amongst this, 3 crore people are Internet savvy. “This is a huge number that we can cater to and showcase our original content pool. If we can cater to 1 crore of this number, we can probably meet the market requirements,” Patnaik adds at length.

Moreover, AAO NXT is ready for a new journey and bestows a complete entertaining basket to the viewers with its beautiful and contemporary content. The home-grown OTT platform will offer a superior and reimagined experience to the viewers going forward.

    5.            Ivan Ayr and Kislay for Soni

SWA general secretary Sunil Salgia said, “Filmmakers always say, ‘Without script there is no film’ or ‘the Script is King’. They are right. It is time to recognise the persons who lay the foundations of these kingdoms. Let them be centre-stage. They will cherish this award more than anything as it comes from their colleagues, their competitors, their critics and those who envy them yet love them. Writing a movie’s script is the most challenging craft, and the best deserves honours, irrespective of its commercial outcome.”

For the purpose of selection of nominees, the SWA Awards Committee accessed 167 of 223 Hindi language feature films released in theatres and on OTT platforms in 2019. A jury comprising of screenwriters such as Ashok Mishra, Atul Tiwari, Juhi Chaturvedi, Saket Chaudhary, Urmi Juvekar, Vijay Krishna Acharya and Vinay Shukla watched films shortlisted by SWA’s Film Selection Committee and selected the nominees under each sub-category. The final winners will be announced in an online awards ceremony on 27 September 2020.

Senior screenwriter, teacher and SWA film awards spokesperson Anjum Rajabali, said, “Victor Hugo’s oft-quoted line says it perfectly: ‘There’s nothing as powerful as an idea whose time has come.’ The time to celebrate the primacy of the script has arrived. The time to honour the writer is here. And what better way than for a writers’ association to do it. There’s no greater pride for a writer than to have her work endorsed by peers who understand writing. SWA is fulfilling its aim to bring the writer centre-stage. Kudos to the SWA Awards Committee led by Sridhar Rangayan, Richa Singh Gautam, Jagriti Thakur and their team for the impeccable transparency of the judging process. Way to go, SWA!”

SWA is holding the first ever SWA Awards on the occasion of its Diamond Jubilee year in 2020. Since they are judged by knowledgeable screenwriters and lyricists, these awards promise to become the most coveted validation for writers in India, much like the awards of other prestigious international writers’ guilds and literary organisations.

The nominees spoke to SWA, reacting to the announcement:

Anubhav Sinha: I am so happy to be nominated by the Screenwriters Association for Article 15 for writing awards, and it is so wonderful that your peers, your seniors think what you wrote was worthy of such a distinction. Thank you so much, jury. Thank you so much, Screenwriters Association.

Gaurav Solanki: This is a very special nomination. Awards for writers, by writers! I hope through this we keep encouraging each other, educating each other of our shortcomings and pat each other's back when the work is good. We keep working, writing new stories and screenplays and walk on new paths. This is a celebration for that only!

Devanshu Singh: It's a matter of great joy and pride for us both, that our first script has been nominated in three categories at the first ever edition of the SWA awards. We wrote this script in 2007 without any formal training in screenwriting. For the past 10 years, we kept polishing it as we learnt the craft. Writing is a game of immense patience and hard work and being rewarded for it, means a lot. Thank you, jury, for considering us worthy of the nomination among such brilliant writers. Special thanks to SWA for starting this award. This will definitely encourage budding writers like us.

Satyanshu Singh: Over the last couple of decades, Screenwriters Association has been the much needed support system we need as writers. It is only just that the SWA has its own awards to honour the work of screenwriters and lyricists. Over the following years, this award will only grow in its stature and legacy. I will always feel honoured and proud to be nominated in the SWA Awards in the very first year. Thank you, SWA, from the bottom of my heart, for this nomination, and every other nomination and award an upcoming writer will receive from you.

Abhishek Chaubey: It comes as a rare piece of good news in these bleak times that SWA has inaugurated its first ever awards to honour the best writing of the year. That we have been nominated in the Best Story category for Sonchiriya is an icing on the cake. It’s an absolute privilege to be nominated for the first ever edition and I wish this initiative is a huge success. Recent years have seen the standing of film writers in our industry improve remarkably and SWA has a major role in this development. I hope this happy story continues into its new act.

Sudip Sharma: It’s lovely to hear that SWA is honouring the best works of the year 2019 with SWA Awards for writing. I am even more thrilled that my writing on Sonchiriya has been thought worthy of nomination by a jury of eminent writers. It is always a lovely feeling to be reviewed well by your peers and I thank them for considering my work worthwhile of that privilege.

Ivan Ayr: I am very grateful to the Screenwriters Association and the 2020 awards committee for this nomination. There is no greater honour than to be recognised by your peers and contemporaries, so this is very special.

Niren Bhatt: The fact that nominations for this award have been selected by fellow writers makes it super special for me. I am humbled and elated by the nomination. Hope SWA Awards grow bigger every year and it manages to give much required unbiased recognition to writers in the Indian film industry. SWA Awards is certainly a step in the right direction.

Vasan Bala: Extremely thrilled to be acknowledged with this nomination for the first ever SWA Awards. Thank you and hope the awards keep growing in strength in the years to come.

Ravinder Randhawa: Nothing could be more significant and heart-warming than being recognised and celebrated by one's fraternity. Therefore, I am extremely happy to be nominated for the first ever SWA Awards. The best part is that the only consideration for these awards seems to be the quality of the script and not the total business of the film. I sincerely hope that these awards will instil faith in good writing and inspire writers to strive for the best.

Sumit Saxena: Thanks to Gaurav Sharma, Sidharth, Shoaib and the entire team from SaReGama for this nomination. This one is special! I am not very sure where my SWA Membership card is. I very rarely ever register my scripts and ideas but, I completely understand the importance of this institution. This is the first year of this award ceremony, so it will be special. And I am hoping for more of these glorious ceremonies in times to come.

Sandeep Pandey: If we look at all the elements of a film, writing, without doubt, is one of the most important components. The Screenwriters Association provides a platform that encourages and safeguards the rights of the upcoming and professional writers. It is a matter of privilege for me that the SWA and the jury nominated "Chousar Firangi" written and directed by me in the best debut writer category. I am very thankful to them. And I also hope that SWA continues to encourage us writers.

Adish Keluskar: Writing is art and art is subjective. Awards in an artistic field, for 'Best' this or that, do not reflect the true nature of art unlike sports or other clearly defined fields. However, awards in an artistic field are important because they serve a necessary function – clear recognition. In today’s muddled times of information overload, clear identification, and recognition of an artistic field from other artistic fields is the vision we need. SWA has that vision and SWA Awards for writing is a concrete reflection of that. I thank you for the nomination and wish SWA the best to continue this vision.

Kislay: I initially joined SWA thinking that it is only an association. Later when I received regular updates about its activities, I realised it does much more. It’s an honour to be chosen by your esteemed fellow writers as one of the contenders for the SWA Awards. In academics, the uniqueness and inventiveness of the academic works is recognised in its peer reviews. SWA Awards is equivalent to that for me in films. I am glad that our peers have seen something of value in what we tried to do in our first film.

  • Q1-2014: DQE International continues profitable run

Q1-2014: DQE International continues profitable run

BENGALURU: The Tapas Chakravarti (he’s the CMD and CEO) led, Hyderabad based DQ Entertainment (International) Ltd, (DQE) continued its profitable run in Q1-2014.

DQE had reported loss for Q1-2013 of Rs 9.2 crore. It reported profit of Rs 14 crore in Q3-2013 followed by a profit of Rs 23.3 crore in Q4-2013. DQE’s net profit for FY-2013 was Rs 37.3 crore. As of June 2013 (Q1-2014), DQE had recorded a net consolidated profit of Rs 6.6 crore.

The company says that its revenue and profitability has a clear seasonal pattern, similar to that of the rest of the global animation industry, wherein almost 60 per cent of the annual revenue is achieved in the third and fourth quarter of the financial year and these results are in line with that trend.

DQE is a global player in the creation, production, distribution, licensing and marketing of various forms of entertainment. The company is a major player in the country in animation production capacity for television, feature films, home video, online game art, visual effects, mobile and next generation console games.

Let us take a look at DQE’s other figures for Q1-2014

DQE’s consolidated net income from operations of Rs 30.43 crore in Q1-2014 was 1.64 per cent lower than the Rs 30.93 crore for Q1-2013 and a little more than a third (34.4 per cent) of the Rs 88.54 crore for Q4-2013.

In Q1-2014, DQE had suffered a foreign exchange loss of Rs 18.4 crore, in Q1-2013, this loss was lower at Rs 5.94 crore, while in Q4-2013, it had a gain of Rs 4.3 crore on account of foreign exchange.

DQE’s total expense for Q1-2014 at Rs 18.9 crore was more than half (51.7 per cent) of Rs 36.56 crore in Q1-2013 and less than a third (31.9 per cent) of the Rs 59.26 crore in Q4-2013.

DQE’s production expense in Q1-2014 at Rs 1.65 crore was a little more than a third (36.7 per cent) of the expense of Rs 4.5 crore in Q1-2013 and almost a quarter (25.24 per cent) of the Rs 6.53 crore in Q4-2013.

DQE’s employee expense at Rs 20.22 crore for Q1-2014 was 15.1 per cent lower than the Rs 23.81 crore in Q1-2013 and just 0.75 per cent lower than the Rs 20.38 crore in Q4-2013.

DQE’s animation segment reported consolidated revenue of Rs 27.57 crore in Q1-2014, lower by 1.8 per cent as compared to the Rs 28.08 crore in Q1-2013, and a little more than a third (35.22 per cent) of the revenue of Rs 78.28 crore in Q4-2013.

DQE’s animation business had revenue of Rs 182.01 crore for FY-2013.

Capital employed for the animation segment at Rs 192.80 crore for Q1-2014 was 42.3 per cent more than the Rs 135.50 crore for Q1-2013 and 17.5 per cent more than the Rs 164.05 crore for Q4-2013.

In its Q2-2013, DQE had said that it expected its distribution business to deliver significant net cash flows from FY-14 onwards. This has not happened in Q1-2014. Results from this segment were Rs (-1.859) crore in Q1-2014, Rs (-1.884) crore for Q1-2012 and Rs (-9.482 crore in Q4-2013. For FY-2013, DQE’s segment result from Distribution was Rs 12 crore.

Revenue from DQE’s distribution business in Q1-2014 at Rs 2.852 crore, was almost flat as compared to the Rs 2.847 crore for Q1-2013 and a little more than a fourth (27.8 per cent) of the Rs 10.26 crore in Q4-2013. Given the fact that DQE’s overall business has seasonal patterns, this segment could show results as per the company’s expectations during the rest of the quarters of FY-2014.

Capital employed for distribution for Q1-2014 at Rs 244.56 crore was 35.2 per cent less than the Rs 377.28 crore in Q1-2013 and 1.7 per cent more than the Rs 240.33 crore in Q4-2013.

Chakravarti said, “The macroeconomic environment in some markets, especially in Europe and Canada, remains very challenging even in the children’s entertainment business. There is however a definitive improvement in the US Animation and children’s entertainment segment where considerable effort is being paid by us to further enhance our footprint.”

“Our core business fundamentals remain sound with a strong current order book, to be executed over the next 2-3 years Our business is global and we have had particular success in TV and Home Video distribution, licensing, merchandising and publishing for brands like The Jungle Book and Peter Pan, as well as for many other properties such as Iron Man, Casper, Charlie Chaplin, Tara Duncan and Little Prince.”

“We are in the process of rescheduling DQE India’s working capital facilities necessary to execute our new order pipeline and complete production and delivery of high brand equity properties such as The Jungle Book – series II, Peter Pan – series II, 5 Children & IT- series I, Lassie – series I, Little Prince – series III, Robin Hood – series I, besides several other productions”, informed Chakravarti.

“We have given a special focus to strengthening our balance sheet by putting an extraordinary effort into the collection of receivables from our clients and partners, which will further improving our working capital position.

I remain cautiously optimistic that we will end the fiscal year in a satisfactory position as planned,” Chakravarti said.

The sources added that the Commission will also provide support to these filmmakers in obtaining requisite permissions from the state governments and local authorities.

A proposal in this regard is in the final stages of preparation in the I & B ministry for being put up before the Union Cabinet for its approval.
