  • ISL’s FC Goa dedicates home jersey to the return of fans to the stadium for 2022-23 season

ISL’s FC Goa dedicates home jersey to the return of fans to the stadium for 2022-23 season

Mumbai: FC Goa, which takes part in the ISL, dedicates its official home jersey for the 2022-23 season to the fans of the club. They finally have the opportunity to return to the stadium to watch their players play at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda.

The FC Goa home jersey for the 2022–23 season predominantly features a striped pattern of two different shades of the club’s bright orange. A series of wavy lines of a lighter shade runs across the stripes, forming a secondary pattern.

This wavy pattern is symbolic of the fans, who form an Ocean of Orange every time the team takes to the field at Fatorda. Football and the waves of the ocean are intrinsic parts of the fabric of Goan society, and the jersey is a representation of the same.

As the stars of FC Goa don the new home jersey, they will be representing the whole of Goa in their quest for success and silverware. To complete the look, the collar and sleeves of the FC Goa 2022-2023 home jersey also feature trim in red and white.

A deeper meaning behind the jersey: The club added that the 2022-23 season is one of great importance to Indian football, as fans will return to the stands for the first time since Covid-19 first struck the country over two years ago. In a bid to minimise the damage caused by the virus, the last two editions of the Hero Indian Super League—2020–21 and 2021–22—were held completely behind closed doors, with the teams having to follow strict safety regulations within bio-bubbles.

All of that will change this time around, as the country has since moved on to a state of normalcy. With the Gaurs’ faithful looking forward to turning up to their favourite team’s matches in large numbers, FC Goa have also acknowledged their presence in their new home jersey.

“We feel excited about playing in front of our fans once again. They have been with us through thick and thin, and have always been our biggest source of motivation. The last time we played with fans cheering us from the sidelines, we won the Hero ISL Shield. Their support was an important reason for us lifting the Durand Cup as well, last year in Kolkata.

“It feels nice to know that we have included an aspect of the fans in our new home shirts. The pattern looks good, of course, but it has also given the shirt an even greater meaning. Every time we wear the shirt, we will now be reminded of their presence and support as we look to challenge for the Hero ISL Trophy,” FC Goa captain, Brandon Fernandes, said.

The FC Goa home jersey for the 2022–23 season will soon be available for purchase at shop.fcgoa.in.

  • #ThisIsGoa chronicles the essence of FC Goa, its connection with the state and the ‘controlled chaos’ perfected by the club

#ThisIsGoa chronicles the essence of FC Goa, its connection with the state and the ‘controlled chaos’ perfected by the club

MUMBAI: Inseparable. Interlinked. Coalesced. Unified. The list of words to describe the relationship between FC Goa and the state of Goa is endless.

In a region where football is life, where the sport runs through the veins of the local populace, FC Goa and Goa are one, for it is impossible to speak of one without mentioning the other.

This campaign celebrates football club FC Goa’s accomplishments in its short journey thus far and introduces the key building blocks of the ecosystem (players, coaches and other personnel) to create brand recognition and focus on its youth development program.

With game-changing initiatives towards player development, scouting and infrastructure for youth teams, FC Goa is looking to build footballing champions of tomorrow. Goa may be the country’s smallest state, but the pride and heart of the club and its supporters remain unmatched. The club’s heart-pumping, leave-it-all-on-the-field philosophy is matched by the passion of its large fanbase.

The campaign focuses on FC Goa’s work in the grassroots sphere and its continued focus on improving the technical quality of players coming through the club’s talent pyramid. The future of the state’s youth is in secure hands, the club providing a home to more than 110 footballers through its several teams.

The presence of a women’s team, the only Indian Super League outfit to have one, and youth teams all the way from Under-13’s to Under 23’s makes the club a well-rounded outfit, one of the few in the entire country to possess as many teams. FC Goa’s intentions are to create a holistic football ecosystem where all stakeholders can thrive and grow at the same pace.

Four trophies in a single season, including two in age-group leagues underline the club’s mission and vision to provide a winning platform to its players while maintaining the essence of elite player development.
There is no FC Goa without Goa, and vice versa. If it is becoming abundantly clear that this is FC Goa’s time, it is also clear that #ThisIsGoa’s time.

Speaking about the campaign, Aditya Datta, Commercial Director of FC Goa stated that this campaign was an effort to bring to highlight the emotional and footballing connect between the club, its fans and the state as a whole.“Our objective was to bring out the fact that the club has stayed true to its ideals of bringing about a football revolution, a cultural bridge using the sport as a tool to solidify the bonds it has forged within five years of its inception. We believe that these bonds can only strengthen with the passage of time and our exemplary work on youth development will reap ample rewards with regards to extended fan loyalty in the future,” said Datta.

Rubina Dhillon, Head of Marketing and Sponsorships at FC Goa spoke about the fact that youth development was an under-highlighted facet of football clubs and that the focus was to shift the spotlight beyond the first team. “If you look at our grassroots programmes and our community outreach initiatives, then the work we’ve done in the short while that we’ve been active is tremendous. We are also hoping that brands recognise the conscious effort that we’ve invested into this area of the club and work hand-in-hand with us to help the youth development and grassroots program reach greater heights in India, Asia and beyond.”

She added that the campaign was a reflection of the ‘controlled chaos’ strategy that it exhibits on the field.“If you look at the team play, you will notice the methodical madness on display, the short passing game that results in beautiful attacking patterns. The club and its philosophy are an extension of the same, proceeding towards its objectives full-tilt but in an orderly fashion, in the right manner,” added Dhillon.

  • We will break even in 2-4 years, says FC Goa’s Shrinivas Dempo

We will break even in 2-4 years, says FC Goa’s Shrinivas Dempo

MUMBAI:  Think Goa, and the imagery that one gets is that of sun kissed beaches and churches. Well, Goa is much more. While Sunday afternoons are a  siesta time for many, villages here come alive with sports fans coming together to organise and participate in what seems to be Goa’s first love – football.

Local clubs like the Dempo’s, Salgaocar’s and Churchill Brothers are known names, which through years of play and support from their respective owners, have become a household name in the state. However, now the fan base is set to expand, thanks to the upcoming Hero Indian super League. With eight teams from across the country gearing up, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Goa too has a franchise called FC Goa.

Owned by Dempo Group of Companies chairman Shrinivas Dempo, VM Salgaocar and Brothers managing director Dattaraj V Salgaocar, Videocon Group chairman Venugopal Dhoot and cricketer Virat Kohli, FC Goa is geared up for the tournament.

The club has global football legends as part of its team. Arthur Antunes Coimbra better known as Zico is their marquee coach. Zico has been a part of three world cups playing for his national team Brazil. Former Arsenal star Robert Pires is the team’s marquee player.

Dempo, a well known businessman, is a massive football fan and is also the vice president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF). He is of the opinion that the league promoted by Star, IMG-Reliance and AIFF has come at the right time. He explains with an example, “Youngsters today, do not wear cricket jerseys. They wear jerseys of Arsenal and Chelsea. We need to convert these youngsters to home grown players.”

When asked why the football fever hasn’t caught up in the country despite a format like the I-League already existing, he explains, “We were always in a dilemma why people were not taking to the I-League.  And we felt it was the egg and chicken story.  It was quality and marketing that was required and I think the ISL has provided that platform.”

At the international draft of the ISL, FC Goa proved to be the most generous as it spent Rs 2.46 crore on seven players. “It’s a high cost game. We are ready to invest money and in a few years see the returns. We will break even in three to four years” he adds.

In terms of infrastructure Dempo feels that Goa has the best infrastructure in the country but still there is a lot to be done.  The club wants to have a stadium of its own but currently will be utilising the government-owned Fatorda stadium in south Goa.

Speaking about Kohli acquiring a stake in the team, he informs that it was the cricketer who had approached them a few months back. He says that the cricketer will be an asset to them as he represents sports passion and is a youth icon.

Dempo says “We have got professional people to run the team. We will be there from a policy perspective and advisory role.”

Speaking further on Stars role to telecast the ISL matches in five languages, he finds it a very good move which will help the game to penetrate the market. “The quality of coverage of the I-League is really not up to the mark, but here we will get the best of coverage” he adds. He also feels that the I-League will not become what the Ranji trophy has become because of the IPL. The 45 year old says, “The I-League is the core competition and we will continue with it.”

The team will be investing money to widen and enlarge the reach of the game in Goa. For this, it will be targeting more schools and under the guidance of Zico and assistant coach Arthur Papas, a scientific programme and high-pitched grassroots programme targeting youngsters from nine years onwards is being sketched out.

FC Goa had announced its principal sponsor as Videocon D2H and kit partner as Adidas. It is also looking at local sponsorships ahead of the kickoff on 12 October. Videocon d2h will also be launching a new channel on its direct-to-home platform centering on the team. A magazine for fans too is slated to be launched.
