Truecaller introduces number scanning for fast-track payments

MUMBAI: Building upon its core proposition of being a complete communication platform, Truecaller will be rolling out two new features – Number Scanner and Fast Track numbers with its upcoming Android release 8.45 in the coming week.

Number Scanner – Now you will be able to use the Truecaller app to scan a number directly from business cards, websites, street signs, shop fronts or anywhere you need to quickly lookup a number or store it to your contacts. This will enable users to have the proper resources to receive relevant information quickly, digitally and in their surrounding physical environment.

Scan & Pay – Users in India will also be able to scan a number and pay directly using Truecaller Pay – this is a more convenient way of making quick payments as opposed to scanning QR codes. You could be out for lunch with a friend, in a store, or even looking to pay bills – this will be beneficial to our users who are always on the go and lessens the need to carry cash or cards.

One can now send or request money, recharge, or even Flash Message any contact from your native phone book.

Truecaller has also launched Fast Track numbers, a service which integrates toll-free numbers for emergency services like police, fire, medical care, women’s helpline, roadside assistance, as well as essential categories like banks, couriers, airlines, railways, and insurance, all integrated directly into the app, accessible by the user without an internet connection. These also include extremely useful ‘Bank Balance Check’ numbers that enable a user to check their bank balance via a return SMS from their respective bank via a missed call service. Located in the search bar, the in-built contacts will help users make phone calls at critical moments with a single tap.

Currently, Fast Track numbers will only be available in India.

Truecaller director of product and engineering Narayan Babu said: “As a product made by the community and for the community, our commitment to our users is to constantly add features that enable them to stay ahead of the curve. These new features make Truecaller even more relevant in the real world. When you see an important phone number, you can directly pull it into your phone with Truecaller and use it, in seconds, to connect or make a payment. Also, during critical moments you can reach out to the right company, person or service with a single tap with Fast track numbers.”

  • DD, AIR to fast-track work on building archives and putting them in public domain

DD, AIR to fast-track work on building archives and putting them in public domain

NEW DELHI: Doordarshan and All India Radio have embarked upon a project to immortalise over 60 maestros such as Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj and veteran playback singer Lata Mangeshkar along with their “signature performances.”

The list of legendary artistes earmarked for the archival series project includes Hindustani vocalist Kishori Amonkar, Carnatic vocalists M Balamuralikrishna and Nedunuri Krishnamurthy, composer M S Viswanathan, Carnatic flautist N Ramani, Sarangi player Ustad Sabri Khan, and Mridangam maestro T K Murthy among others.

While both AIR and Doordarshan already have extensive archives and work for archiving other works is in progress, Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar said the main purpose of fast tracking the archival material of AIR and DD is to disseminate digital wealth to the public at large.

Prasar Bharati has constituted a National Archival Committee of experts which includes Prema Cariappa, Shubha Chaudhuri, Uma Shankar, Suresh Chand Vankar and other senior officers from Doordarshan and AIR for the purpose of developing a roadmap.

Doordarshan and AIR have already started compiling the data to ensure that the high-quality video and audio content is brought in the public domain.

Prasar Bharati has instructed both Doordarshan and AIR to create a world class archival wing to digitize and fast track the development of its archival material.

The task of indexation/categorisation/creation of metadata of the archived programmes so as to make them accessible at a later stage have already been initiated. The archival material would thus be repurposed and repackaged before it is being brought into the public domain.

Noting that the reach of All India Radio and Doordarshan was the largest among all radio and TV channels and yet its advertising revenue was the lowest, a Parliamentary Committee had some years earlier said the public service broadcasters needs to project itself to the public.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology said that according to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry both AIR and DD Archives can be a rich source of revenue generation.

It said there is ‘urgent need’ to explore the ways to earn revenue nationally and internationally from these treasures on the part of the Ministry as well as All India Radio and Doordarshan.

The Committee recommended that the details of the archives which can be made commercially available should be put on the website of Doordarshan/All India Radio/Ministry and publicised through various mechanisms which would definitely help in generating more revenue from this precious resource.

The extent of revenue that can be generated through these archives is evident from the fact that the footage for one minute is provided by Doordarshan at the rate of Rs 6000 per minute to people making documentaries for telecast on any channel. The Committee was informed that 100 DVD titles have been handpicked from the Archive of Doordarshan and are available for viewing to the public at large.

  • Kwan acquires stake in PR agency Eye D

Kwan acquires stake in PR agency Eye D

MUMBAI: Kwan, India‘s entertainment and marketing company, has acquired controlling interest in PR agency Eye D Communications for an undisclosed amount.

Eye D and Kwan already share a number of clients in common on the PR and commercial front and this acquisition has been a natural progression of a working relationship.

Kwan MD Anirban Das Blah says, “We were looking at investing in a PR agency to provide complete communications solutions to our clients. My only worry was the glaring difficulty that communication companies face when it comes to building and communicating their clients as brands.”

Blah believes Eye D Communications is an agency that operates from a ‘strategic communication’ perspective and not just from a media relations point of view.

“We plan to help Eye D accelerate their growth by virtue of our relationships and broaden their offering within the entertainment, fashion, luxury and lifestyle space. Eye D will continue to operate under the same brand name in the industry so as to maintain its individuality even beyond the realm of Kwan”, Blah says.

Adds Eye D Communications head Divya Tejuja, “Having worked very closely with Kwan on the numerous clients that we share, we have been able to rapidly scale up operations in sectors such as films, fashion, lifestyle and luxury brands. The association will give us access to a much larger talent pool and put us on the fast track to effective brand building and image management in the entertainment, luxury and lifestyle space.”
