  • ‘Content innovation to govern English movie channels’ landscape:’ Kevin Vaz

‘Content innovation to govern English movie channels’ landscape:’ Kevin Vaz

MUMBAI: As 2016 rolls in after an action packed 2015, people are now rolling up their sleeves setting tougher goals to meet new challenges and touch greater heights in the new year. And amongst them is Star India business head – English cluster Kevin Vaz.

According to Vaz, the English movie channels’ landscape will be governed by content and experience that will be led by innovation. And that’s exactly what Star Movies and Star Movies Select HD plan to do this year.

Vaz tells Indiantelevision.com, “The industry landscape will be governed by content and experience that will be led by innovation. The invitation to our viewers is not just the promise of top-of-the-line Hollywood premieres on TV, but a marketing story to match its grandeur. Advertisers are well informed and believe in the power of great content and innovations and are willing to partner on something that will drive the viewers. At Star, we have also invested in creating a very strong brand extension in the form of Star Movies Secret Screening that engages and involves viewers beyond TV and makes them a part of the brand community. Understanding the consumer psychographics and creating stories that appeal to them will continue to the motivation for the team.”

With an edge over its competitors with the rights to the Oscars, this year the 88th Academy Awards will be simulcast live for the first time on Star Movies as well as Star Movies Select HD on 29 February, 2016.

While Star believes in curating content with content filters that appeals to the audience, Vaz is not perturbed by the advent of over the top (OTT) platforms offering content to viewers at their convenience. Opining that the mushrooming OTT platforms are not something that will affect acquisition cost of content, Vaz says, “At Star, we have some of the longest running studio deals giving us access to the biggest blockbusters and franchises. Our acquisition model has always been content based and continues to focus on ensuring that our viewers get the best of Hollywood.”

Nowadays, marketing is not just about spending more, but spending smart and driving impact for viewership and perception of brands. For the premiere of Captain America, the channel initiated a first of its kind activity giving viewers a chance to win Captain America’s Harley Davidson bike. Going a step further in content innovation, for X-Men: Days of Future Past, Star Movies had joined forces with Farhan Akhtar, Vishal Dadlani & SKRAT to create a music video for the TV premiere.

Additionally, the network has strategically invested in creating a strong brand extension in the form of Star Movies ‘Secret Screening’ that involves viewers beyond the television and makes them a part of the brand community.

When queried as to how viewership impacts advertisers and agencies when it comes to English entertainment channels, Vaz says, “Advertising does depend on viewership, as that’s how the format of the TV business operates in India.” However, he is quick to add that Star has a competitive edge over its rivals with the strategic content deals with 21st Century Fox and Disney, which gives it access to some of the biggest blockbusters and franchises. “Our library strength is exhaustive and cannot be replicated by anyone. These facts alone make us a natural choice for our partners. The responsibility of having the best premieres and the biggest library is well shouldered with thought through marketing stories and festivals,” he adds.

From a content perspective, Vaz is bullish about 2016. “This year will be spectacular for our viewers as they will get to see some of the biggest titles like Avengers- Age of Ultron , Birdman, Boyhood, Fantastic Four and Ant Man being showcased as an offering month on month between Star Movies and Star Movies Select HD. We will continue with our radical content innovations like premiering unreleased movies month on month on Star Movies Select HD, something no other channel can offer,” he informs.

Beyond the premieres, the channel will continue to offer viewers unique movie festivals on book adaptations, critically acclaimed animation and Select 7+ to name a few, which brings some of the highest rated movies together.

Farhan Akhtar to endorse Amway’s Nutrilite

MUMBAI: Amway India has signed Farhan Akhtar as the brand ambassador to promote the Nutrilite range of the products.

Amway India CEO Anshu Budhraja said, “Studies in India indicate that nine out of 10 Indians consume less than adequate protein daily. The fact is that majority of people are not consuming the World Health Organisation’s minimum recommendation of five servings (400 grams) per day of fruits and vegetables thus missing out on important nutritional benefits. This indeed is a matter of concern. We needed a strong and credible face who could help people understand the role of supplementation in addition to balanced diet and exercise as part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Farhan Akhtar was an obvious choice.”

“We are confident that Farhan’s association will provide a further fillip to the Nutrilite brand in the country. We plan to launch a high decibel 360 degree campaign in early 2016 to leverage the association of Farhan Akhtar with Nutrilite,” added Budhraja.

Amway India chief marketing officer Sundip Shah added, “Besides being talented and versatile, Farhan is physically fit with a stature and youth appeal that resonates well with Nutrilite’s world class image offering the best of nature and the best of science for optimal health. Consumer response to the association of Farhan with Nutrilite has also been very positive.”

Akhtar, said, “Nutrilite is an iconic and innovative brand which has pioneered and led the supplements category for the past 80 years across the world. I am delighted to be their brand ambassador in the country. I strongly believe that it is important to take care of one’s daily nutritional needs for a healthy and long life. People should understand the virtues of being fit, healthy and eating right.”

  • Hindi GECs ace programming game as festive season descends

Hindi GECs ace programming game as festive season descends

MUMBAI: The Indian festival season is fast approaching and all major Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) are pulling out new programming rabbits from their hats to lure in viewers.

What’s more, with brands loosening their purses considerably for advertising purposes during the festival season, fresh programming is the best way for broadcasters to offer them a big bang for their buck.

From Colors’ Bigg Boss Season 9 to Sony’s Power Couple, from Star Plus’ Aaj Ki Raat Hai Zindagi to Zee TV’s I Can Do That, broadcasters are adding muscle to their programming with star power because in a country like India, nothing works its charm better on the general public than Bollywood celebrities. So major A-list stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan and Farhan Akhtar are prepping up to weave their magic on the small screen soon.

Be it in the fiction or non-fiction space, channels are trying hard to give exceptional shows to boost viewership. Firmly putting the saas-bahu sagas behind them, channels are now experimenting with content to stay ahead of the competition.

Hindi GECs like Star Plus, Colors, Zee TV, Life OK, Sab, Sony Entertainment Television (SET) as well as &TV have multiple new shows up their sleeves, which are slated to launch in the coming months.

Here’s a look at the programming fireworks in store for the festive season across major Hindi GECs.

    Star Plus

The leader in Hindi GECs, Star Plus has a few aces up its sleeves this festive season. And the one making the most amount of buzz as of now is the show with Amitabh Bachchan as host titled Aaj Ki Raat Hai Zindagi. Two teaser promos of the show with Big B have already managed to pique viewer interest. The show will also see Star Plus and Bachchan coming together again after a span of 15 years. Their association started back in 2000 with the first season of Kaun Banega Crorepati, which also marked Bachchan’s television debut.

In recent fiction launches, Star Plus began airing Balaji Telefilms’ new show Kuch Toh Hai Tere Mere Darmiyaan from 28 September. Apart from this, the channel has a few other shows lined up. Colors

Since its prime time shows Sasural Simar Ka, Udaan and Swaragini have been rating rakers, Colors is eyeing only one new fiction show launch in the coming months called Naagin. The channel has not yet revealed the launch date of the show, which is produced by SOL Productions. That said, in the non-fiction space, Colors will be bringing back its hugely popular reality show Bigg Boss with double the vigour as host Salman Khan promises ‘Double Trouble’ this season. Not wanting to mess with its current programming line-up, Colors has slotted season nine of Bigg Boss in the new time slot of 10.30 pm on weekdays from 11 October.

    Zee TV

While last month the channel launched a couple of new shows like Laajwanti and Yeh Vaada Raha, in October too Zee TV will continue its spree of new programming. A new fiction show called Kaala Teeka, which revolves around superstition and its impact on our society, will be launched soon. The first teaser of the show is already on air. Another show in the non-fiction category is the second season of talent search reality show India’s Best Dramebaaz. The show will see children between the age group of 5-12 years as participants and is produced by Essel Productions.

    Life OK

Star India’s second Hindi GEC Life OK is getting ready to herald in a couple of new shows by the end of October. The first fiction show is titled Jaane Kya Hoga Rama Re and is produced by Shobhana Desai Production. The show, which will also mark Supriya Pathak’s comeback on the small screen, was earlier titled Ram Ki Leela Rang Layegi.

Two others fiction shows that are being readied for launch in the month of October are Pati Patni or Woh by Edit II Productions and Naagarjuna produced by Beyond Dream Productions.

    Sab TV

The comedy destination on Indian television – Sab is known for quirky shows. While the channel launched a new show late last month called Police Factory, which is produced by DJs A Creative Unit, another show is slated to launch by the end of October. The new show – Chalti Ka Naam Gadi is based on a car and a family and is produced by Deepti Bhatnagar Productions.

    Sony Entertainment Television

With an aim to reboot its programming story, Sony Entertainment Television too has a host of new shows lined up. The first in line is the fiction titled Pyar Ko Ho Jane Do starring Iqbal Khan and Mona Singh in the lead. The show will replace Reporter from 20 October in the 9 pm slot.

On the non-fiction front, the channel will be bringing the popular Israeli reality show Power Couple to India, which will be hosted by Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora Khan. Produced by Colosceum, the show will see 10 celebrity couples living under one roof being tested as they face extreme challenges to prove how well they know each other. The launch date of the show has not yet been announced.

    &TV

Zee Entertainment Enterprises’ &TV will be churning out as many as three new shows across different genres. Foraying in the horror genre, the channel will be launching a mini-series called Dar Sabko Lagta Hai, which will be anchored by Bipasha Basu. Exploring other genres, &TV is soon also planning to launch its first mythological series called Santoshi Maa. The show’s teaser promo is already on air. On the other hand, a fiction titled Yeh Kaha Gaye Hum, produced by Balaji Telefilms, will be going on air from 26 October.

With genres ranging from horror to mythology, reality to drama, comedy to romance, there’s a liberal dose of everything for everyone on Hindi GECs this festive season.

Zee TV completes 23 years on Indian television; creates 1 million jobs

MUMBAI: Twenty-three years ago to this date, one man changed the face of Indian television forever.

We’re talking about none other than the czar of television in India – Dr Subhash Chandra, who began beaming Zee TV on 2 October, 1992 as the first Hindi language cable channel in India.

Over the last 23 years, Zee Entertainment Enterprises’ Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC) Zee TV has expanded its reach to more than 169 countries and has viewership of over 956 million across the world. What’s more, with the advent of Zee TV, the industry has created one million jobs, according to Dr Chandra.

On 23 anniversary of Zee TV, Dr Chandra took to Twitter to say:

Following his father’s tweet-steps, ZEEL MD and CEO Puneet Goenka also tweeted:

Since launch, the channel has aired hundreds of fictional show, which while providing entertainment have also raised multiple social issues of the country. Some of its impactful dramas have been series like Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo, Apki Antra, Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan and Afsar Betiya amongst many others.

A pioneer in many aspects, Zee TV was the first to introduce India’s first musical reality show called Antakshari, which ran successfully for over ten years. Hosted by Anuu Kapoor, the show was viewers’ staple diet across age groups.

Zee also went on to launch Zee Khana Khazana, the first 24 hours food channel in India. Aap Ki Adalat hosted by renowned journalist Rajat Sharma, was among the most loved show of 90s that the channel has ever produced.

In the fiction space, the channel gave a landmark show like Tara – the first show on contemporary urban women by Vinta Nanda that ran for about five years on the channel. Some of the other shows that have managed to make a mark areAastitvaa Ek Prem Kahani as well as the endearing and inimitable Hum Paanch.

In 1995, the channel launched first singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, which has given some of the finest singers to the industry. • Box Office: ‘Bangistan’ bombs; ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ crosses Rs 300 crore

Box Office: ‘Bangistan’ bombs; ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ crosses Rs 300 crore

MUMBAI: Coming from a production house, which is known to churn out quality films, Bangistan fails to deliver. Produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, the movie was expected to be a commercial entertainer. However, Bangistan, inspired from a British film Four Lions – about four waylaid terrorists, is an utterly senseless film exhibiting total lack of the film medium. The film managed to put together just about Rs 1 crore on its opening Friday and despite expected improvement over Saturday and Sunday, the first weekend collections stand at a measly Rs 3.35 crore.

On the other hand, Jaanisar, was marketed as ‘From the maker of Umrao Jaan’ and to his credit, Muzaffar Ali did make Umrao Jaan and Gaman, two hugely appreciated films. However, his latest lacks the purpose and the human interest story that his previous two films had. This film lacks identification for any kind of audience, as a result of which, meets with a disastrous fate at the box office: no takers.

Ajay Devgn’s experiment with a family thriller sans action, Drishyam, does not quite work despite all three of its previous versions in Malayalam (original), Telugu and Tamil remakes making their mark at the box office as well as with critics. While critics stayed divided over handing out stars in ratings to the film, ticket buyers remained mostly indifferent. Except Devgn, that too not the way his fans like to see him, the rest came as a patch up job.  You make an economical film but admission rates remain the same at the cinema halls and audiences expect their money’s worth. After an opening weekend of Rs 27.6 crore including collections from paid previews on Thursday before regular release, the film ended its first week with Rs 41.3 crore.

Masaan could muster praise from the critics as well as few who paid to watch it but not enough to register at the box office. It added Rs 1.05 crore to its first week figures taking its two-week total to Rs 3.45 crore.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan still holds sway over the audience also getting some repeat footfalls as it collects over Rs 29.4 crore in its third week. This takes the film’s three-week tally to Rs 301.45 crore.

Bahubali: The Beginning (Hindi- Dubbed) continues to do well during its fourth week. The film has added Rs 10.9 crore to take its four-week tally to Rs 98.85 crore.

  • Askme & Askmebazaar roll out new TVCs with Ranbir Kapoor & Farhan Akhtar

Askme & Askmebazaar roll out new TVCs with Ranbir Kapoor & Farhan Akhtar

MUMBAI: Internet platform Askme.com and its online marketplace Askmebazaar.com have launched two comprehensive campaigns.

While Ranbir Kapoor will be seen in the Askme commercials, Farhan Akhtar has been roped in as the new face for Askmebazaar. Both these campaigns aim to bring together Askme’s single proposition of ‘One stop destination’.

Askme’s campaign, ‘Baap of all trends’ is in line with brand ethos of being ahead of the curve. Through this campaign, the company aims to position itself as the one stop destination that caters to diverse needs of a customer.

In a move to connect with today’s youth, the campaign aims to fill the gap between a plethora of options available in the online space but lack of one credible source for the same.

Further, with the launch of the campaign by Askmebazaar.com, the company introduces a novel concept of online retail therapy. ‘One Click Therapy’ as the name suggests acts as the driving force for customers to lead a stress free life. Online marketplace in Askmebazaar is positioned as stress buster via retail therapy as it offers next day delivery on top brand with best deals.

Conceptualized by JWT, both the campaigns use a comprehensive multimedia approach, compelling facts and vivid imagery designed to change consumers buying behavior.

Askme group CMO Manav Sethi said, Both these campaigns are built on consumer insights. Search has moved from discovery to aggregated opinions and hence Askme assumes that leadership position across India to communicate best places to eat, wear, and relax etc. The option to transact these products and be in the trend is made available by Askmebazaar where majority find platforms such as these an option full of choices, brands and best prices and hence ‘stress mein don’t go bizarre; shop on askmebazaar.’”

J Walter Thompson senior vice president & executive business director Saurabh Saksena added, “Over the past few years the consumers are turning to the internet to see what choices they have to make, whether for eating-out, travel destinations, fashion, gadgets, plays, etc. While there are many destinations that offers them choice, few offer them advise. The poor consumer is left asking people who they know (and who may not be experts) for their advise about where to eat, where to travel to, which movie to watch, what to wear and what gadget to buy, etc.”

“And these ‘advisors’ may not be the best people to ask. This forms the basis for our campaign, we have had most fun coming up with. ‘Don’t ask just about anyone, ask the Baap of all trends, askme.com’. Askme.com offers to satisfy this need to get advise/ recommendations from a credible source, through curated experiences,” he added.

Kapoor said, “I am excited about my association with a brand as versatile and vibrant as Dulux. Its philosophy of ‘Let’s Colour’ by way of expressing through their range of products has struck a chord with me. Dulux has been constantly evolving and offering consumers more to experiment with while decorating their homes. Home decoration is a significant medium of expressing one’s individual style and Dulux helps consumers in finding that style along with great performance.”
