  • Facebook activates Safety Check option after Paris attack

Facebook activates Safety Check option after Paris attack

MUMBAI: The world was struck with horror as Paris bled under the terror attacks that paralysed the city early morning on November 14.

As news of the multiple attacks in six key places in the city spread through France and the world, family and friends of those present in the city couldn’t help but panic about the wellbeing of their loved ones. The attacks left 127 dead and over 200 injured including 99 that have been critically injured (as per the available statistics at the time of filing of this report)

The situation further intensified as President Holland declared a state of emergency in France, closing its borders. Like every major disaster, be it natural or manmade, chaos ensued.

Facebook did its part in abating some of the confusion with its Safety Check option.

Thousands of users took to the application to send their safety message out to the world by checking ‘Safe Now’ on their profile pages.

As per the data Facebook shared with Indiantelevision.com,  4.1 million Facebook users marked themselves safe using the tool, which notified 360 million users of their friends’ safety since the service was activated.

“We’ve activated Safety Check, so if you’re in Paris you can mark yourself safe or check on your friends and family,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg later posted on the social media earlier on 14 November, while condemning the act of violence in Paris.

According to Facebook spokesperson, 78 million people have had over 183 million Facebook interactions related to the attacks so far.

Safety Check isn’t a new offering from the tech giant. It was launched in 2011 after the devastating Tsunami had hit Japan and surrounding areas. The option was also widely used after the earthquake in Nepal earlier this year.

Interestingly this is the first time Facebook has activated the service for anything other than natural disaster.

Explaining the reasoning behind the move, Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook, “Many people have rightfully asked why we turned on Safety Check for Paris but not for bombings in Beirut and other places. Until yesterday, our policy was only to activate Safety Check for natural disasters. We just changed this and now plan to activate Safety Check for more human disasters going forward as well.”

Facebook is also allowing users to change their profile pictures in the blue, white and red shades of the French national flag in support of France and the people of Paris.

  • Facebook launches Agency Ambassadors Program in APAC

Facebook launches Agency Ambassadors Program in APAC

MUMBAI: With the ever-evolving nature of the digital landscape and millions of pieces of online content being created every minute, it’s never been more important for marketers to understand how to cut through the clutter to reach their audience.

In a bid to keep its agency partners up to speed on its products and services as well as support the development of local agency talent, Facebook’s initiative saw top creative and media minds from agencies across Asia-Pacific took part in the very first Agency Ambassador program for the region.

Facebook launched the Agency Ambassador Program in Asia-Pacific as a hands-on education session. During the three-day session in Singapore, Facebook’s teams worked closely with agency representatives from India, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia on how to apply best practices to campaigns and client briefs so the knowledge sticks.

Joining it for the Agency Ambassador sessions in Singapore were representatives from Amnet, Carat, CyberAgent, Dentsu, iProspect, OMD, PHD, Hakuhodo, Havas Media, IPG, Madison, Resolution Media, Septeni, Starcom Mediavest and ZenithOptimedia.

    What they did?

A little bit of work and a little bit of play. Day one was kicked off with a tour of the new Facebook Singapore digs and a local goodies swap, agency reps sharing snacks from their home country as a ‘getting to know you’ icebreaker. The reps were then broken into teams for a Blueprint download, each group given a hypothetical client brief they had to bring to life using Facebook marketing principals they had learnt throughout the day. The session covered everything from dissecting a brief, putting up ads wireframes to align with business objectives, creative best practice, a targeting module as well as campaign measurement and reporting.

It was a full day of planning, executing and reporting, where participants soaked up knowledge not only from Facebook but also from each other.

“We found agencies and clients learn more efficiently when they take concepts and apply them immediately so they stick. It’s not just about listening to someone talk—it’s about interacting with your team members and putting what you learn into action as the day goes on,” shares Facebook APAC agency development lead Matthew Drury.

Day two was a mix of deep dive learning sessions from Facebook and Instagram experts like Fergus O’Hare from the Creative Shop, Amit Chaubey from Marketing Science and Swati Rai who chatted about Atlas and what it means for agencies and brands.

Participants had the chance to ask questions after each session to better understand how Facebook can help them achieve the best results for their current clients as well as win new business.

But it wasn’t just work—it was also a chance for agency teams from around the region to connect with each other, mingling and networking over drinks in the Facebook Singapore beer garden before heading out to dinner.

    What’s next?

Facebook will continue to work closely with the agency representatives that took part in the Ambassador Program, helping them to hand select Blueprint courses relevant to their agency. The agency ambassadors will head up Facebook and Instagram product learning within their agencies so other team members are brought up to speed on the marketing products available to them.

“We will continue the conversation now that everyone has gone back home. They are part of our Facebook and Instagram community so we want to keep the dialogue flowing. We will work with our ambassadors to get feedback on our products so we can tailor them to better suit their clients’ needs and ultimately collaborate to produce more stand out, award winning work,” added Facebook APAC agency development lead Edel Horgan.

  • What’s exciting Times Now’s Arnab Goswami these days

What’s exciting Times Now’s Arnab Goswami these days

MUMBAI: With the explosion in social media such as Twitter and Facebook, the very nature of news is being redefined. New news icons have emerged, whether personalities or organisations, in the digital ecosystem having as many followers  – if not more – as a TV channel. One tweet or update – on most occasions sent out even before traditional print and TV news – is enough to send shockwaves running through the globe.

The digital shift has resulted in cord cutting with many subscribers preferring the cheaper OTT services in many other parts of the world. India is going through its digitization pangs. Internet penetration complemented by aggressive growth of smartphone has grabbed the attention of many wealthy investors to invest in digital assets and Mukesh Ambani’s visionary weapon to overcome bandwidth issue Reliance Jio looks set to rejuvenate the entire ecosystem.

But all this does not faze Times Network (Times Now, ET Now and Magic Bricks Now) news president and editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami at all. He believes that television is “super young in India” and he is hedging his bets on it being the first medium of choice at least for the foreseeable future.

“As a medium TV will continue to be dominant,” he says. “I think for the next 10 years TV will lead and digital will follow. In the coming six to seven years TV and Digital will co-exist, which it does now days also.”

To shore up his argument he points towards the viewership his prime time show Newshour notches up. “While the digital interaction counts between 10000 to 20000, through television we reach out to millions,” he explains.

According to the flamboyant journalist there is a huge room for innovation in news television – something which existing players are hardly exploring. “If you ask me what are the innovations that we are doing in the television news space, I don’t think there are any. Innovations are key to prosperity. Newshour was an innovation, and we keep innovating with it. We open up phone calls, use social media to make it interactive. Emergence of digital will bring in way more innovations,” asserts Goswami.

Sharing his assessment on demographic segmentation Goswami says, “I believe the people who are over 25 will consume TV and ones below 20 will prefer digital.”

Despite being upbeat about television Goswami is not ready to leave any stone unturned to establish his news network as the leader in the digital space. The Times Now app which at this stage has approximately 700,000 downloads (as per Times Now) is what he has trained his eyes on.

A specialist team of 25 people has been put in place to expand The Times Now digital presence. “If there is an audience between 10-20 years which is a digital-only audience, I don’t want to lose them. That’s why we are aggressively innovating in the digital space,” informs Goswami.

The most successful part in the mobile app as per Goswami’s observations is the Newshour Shorts, a section where small clips consisting key moments of a debate are uploaded.

And it’s not just video, Goswami and his team have enabled an audio only feed of Newshour to cater to the bandwidth impoverished. Says he:  “The story of our country is we have poor bandwidth even in cities, so what about the guys in the rural area who don’t have the bandwidth to buffer the audio visual feed. They are taking the audio feed and enjoying Newshour as a radio series. We find that at 9 o’clock, a huge number of people tune in to the app to enjoy the audio only version of Newshour.”

What’s engaging him these days is the quickly evolving consumer, he confesses. “People now want to watch content when they want and how they want. We service providers cannot be arrogant and say we will only be on TV if you want to watch us tune in at 9. It is important to be appealing to each and every segment.”

Marking one of the moments of 2015 television audience measurement body Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India started rolling out its rural data from week 41. Even as advertisers and media planners are waiting for the viewer panels and data reportage to settle down, still every one expects air time pricing to enter a new dynamic.

Times Now has had a tendency to attract urban advertisers, mainly because it is an English news channel and is perceived to have premium audiences. So the fact that the rural monitoring would start coughing out viewership numbers needn’t have perturbed Arnab.

But the TV scribe says he spent sleepless nights before week 41 data. He reveals: “People from the fraternity told me to relax as the advertisements and revenues come from the urban areas. But my question was: What is the point of being relevant at urban areas if nobody watches in rural areas? I am a journalist, advertising can come from urban areas but if people don’t watch in small towns I will feel that I don’t have the impact in those areas. If I am doing a story on Lalitgate I want people from Bongaigaon as well as Bombay to watch it. I was very nervous but next day I was thrilled that in terms of viewership, rural is higher than urban. I thank BARC (India) for doing us a great service by breaking the myth that English news is consumed only in metros by males.”

Despite not being on social media, Arnab Goswami often turns out to be the trending topic amongst Indian netizens across platforms. And he points out that he promotes every hashtag with optimum zest.

“The hashtags are important to us,” he says. “For me conversation is important. I feel like involving the audience up to the time where they feel like sharing their opinion. Even if you agree or disagree I want to involve you in it and that’s where the hastags play a vital role.”

But it’s not as if only positive hastags relating to Arnab go viral on social media. Often irked netizens, have expressed their angst in a flood against the channel’s and Arnab’s views. One such scenario was #ShameonTimesNow which trended for four days after the news broadcaster aired a Newshour debate #ShameinSydney describing the performance of Team India in Cricket World Cup semifinal.

“The performance of Team India was shameful and I had no fear in calling it so, I will not change my opinion even now. But people talked about the episode because they watched it and I am happy that they watched it. I want to have that conversation and I want to track the conversation, and go back and read the tweets. I may not change my point of view, but I am aware of what other people are thinking. I do follow lot of conversations so it gives me sense of how it works and what is going on” Goswami asserts.

The English News genre as per the Ficci-KPMG 2015 report has 0.1 per cent of total television viewership. As against that, five per cent of the entire TV adspend of Rs 155 billion is spent on the genre.

And even in this space Times Now is setting the pace. “In terms of revenue through advertising Times Now is a clear number one in the English News genre,” informs a senior media planner. He further adds, “The primetime show Newshour charges approximately double when compared to the other competitors.”

The rate for a 10 second slot during Newshour is over Rs 45,000, and there are close to 12 advertisers on board, “We have more advertisers than we can accommodate and I am grateful to the advertisers for helping us do what we do,” says Goswami.

Looking back at 2015 Goswami terms it as one of the best years in recent times. And that’s broadly because of four reasons, he states, pausing for a few seconds.

“Four things make me term this as one of the best years. Firstly Times Now has got 90 per cent channel share multiple times in terms of viewership. Secondly Times Now has over 50 per cent channel share despite some channels trying to change their names in the market where there is no number two. Thirdly, the new innovation The National Debate, got over 91 per cent of viewership share. And lastly we were able to increase the viewership of ET Now by 15-20 per cent after taking over. So now I have three shows Newshour, Frankly Speaking, and The National Debate. I am excited about them,” he says, signing off with a confident smile on his bespectacled face.

Post Murdoch takeover, Nat Geo CEO sounds layoff knell for 180 employees

MUMBAI: Heads have started rolling at the National Geographic Society after Rupert Murdoch officially took over the company on 3 November, 2015.

National Geographic CEO Gary Knell has sounded the ‘knell’ for layoffs, in what is being called the biggest in the history of National Geographic Society. As many as 180 people comprising almost nine per cent of the staff have been given the pink slip, some of them award winning photographers, designers and editors. The company has also offered buyouts for some employees.

Many of the employees, who have been asked to leave, took to social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to make public the news.

In a tweet, National Geographic photo editor Sherry L. Brukbacher said that she was one of the staff members, who’ve been relieved from their duties.

Her tweet went like this: “Experienced National Geographic Photo Editor looking for employment. Fox merger elim [sic] many today. Will miss my amazing colleagues!” – @SBrukbacher.

Some of the others that have been shown the door are National Geographic picture editor Kim Hubbard, National Geographic Creative’s picture editors Nancy Lee Ott and veteran National Geographic photographer Michael ‘Nick’ Nichols amongst others.

In an internal email to all employees, Knell wrote:

    To all NGS Staff:

After very careful and serious consideration, we are ready to communicate how our restructuring and transformation will affect each employee at National Geographic. To that end, please make every effort to be available tomorrow, November 3rd, either in your regular work location, and/or by phone.

If you are traveling for business, on vacation or plan to be out for any other reason, please notify Tia Freeman-Evans or Yvonne Perry in HR immediately, so we can make alternative plans to get in touch with you. If you know that someone on your staff will be out of the office on November 3rd, please let Tia or Yvonne know by 3 p.m. (Eastern) today, as well.

Please watch your inbox for important information about your employment status tomorrow.

I cannot thank you enough for your patience and hard work over the last few months. I am proud of how our teams and our organization have approached and responded to this transitional period. Looking ahead, I am confident National Geographic’s mission will be fulfilled in powerful, new and impactful ways, as we continue to change the world through science, exploration, education and storytelling.

    Gary

Then, in a follow up email with the subject line ‘An Important Message from Gary Knell,’ he further intimated the staff with this message:

    To all NGS Staff–

To change the world through science, exploration, education and storytelling has never been as important as it is today. We are transforming National Geographic to be better positioned than ever to deliver on this mission./CONTINUES

Since announcing our plans to establish National Geographic Partners and to set a new strategy for the National Geographic Society, teams have been working tirelessly to develop our plans for moving forward. There is no doubt that this strategic move will amplify our mission and message across all media platforms with greater resources than today, all while ensuring the sustainability of the Society for many years to come. Leadership teams for both Partners and the Society will be named when we close the transaction in mid-November.

This is a journey – we’re changing our structure along with how we work. The commitment to our brand and to the impact we make on the planet remains unchanged – but how we deliver on that will, indeed, be transformative.

Part of these efforts also means making the toughest of decisions about the staffing needs of the organizations going forward. Some of our colleagues will be leaving National Geographic over the next few days and, in some cases, weeks.

We did not make these decisions without very serious consideration and care. We are providing all affected colleagues with meaningful severance packages to assist with the transition. We are also offering some colleagues the opportunity to choose an early separation based on a combination of age and years of service with National Geographic.

Across the board, we are treating each and every colleague with the dignity and respect deserved for their contributions to our organization and to the mission. I ask you to share my personal gratitude and appreciation for these colleagues’ contributions and service. And with the greatest respect to everyone involved, I ask for your commitment to what lies ahead.

Thank you for your collective patience throughout these past few weeks, as well as the professionalism and consistent follow-through displayed every day in virtually every corner of our operations as we have continued to deliver world class science, research and storytelling to a world that needs us now more than ever. I believe we must be bold and we must act now to better guarantee success for our mission. We will evolve. We will create impact. We will change the world.

    Gary

In September this year, Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox acquired a majority stake in The National Geographic Society for approximately $725 million. The new entity is 73 per cent owned by 21st Century Fox and 27 per cent by The National Geographic Society.

  • Pepperfry gets festive with clutter-breaking Diwali campaign

Pepperfry gets festive with clutter-breaking Diwali campaign

MUMBAI: For one of India’s premier festivals Diwali, Pepperfry has planned an ad campaign with a clutter-breaking message that builds on this Diwali spirit.

The campaign has been conceptualised by L&K Saatchi & Saatchi. The ad builds on the communication that unlike the transactional nature of every day interactions, in this festive season people have an opportunity to reflect on their behaviours and actions and their relationships with others.

Pepperfry used this insight to showcase that people can undertake ‘good actions’ to form an emotional bridge with others.

The coming together of the festive social context along with the individual transformation becomes a powerful catalyst for good action, which is what Pepperfry captures in the message “Iss Diwali Kuch Badal Ke Dekhiye.” The brand associates with the communication as a key enabler of good actions, thereby altering relationships positively.

The TV campaign is live across a bouquet of English infotainment, entertainment, movies, and lifestyle channels, select Hindi HD general entertainment channels (GECs) as well as some regional channels.

The message is also supported by in-cinema advertising across the top seven cities and outdoor in top four markets. It will also be propagated across the digital and social platforms like Google, YouTube and Facebook.

Pepperfry’s earlier campaigns have stressed on rational benefits like quality products and service level standards of free & efficient delivery and assembly along with the other core category triggers. Now, Pepperfry is establishing the emotional benefits of the transformation that its products can bring to people’s lives.

Talking about the TVC, L&K Saatchi and Saatchi executive creative director Kartik Smetacek said, “Diwali seemed like the perfect occasion for pepperfry.com to widen its ambit of communication and own a larger brand idea. That’s where the ‘Iss Diwali, kuch badal ke dekhiye’ campaign was born. The films seek to reinvent the role of furniture, which is not traditionally seen as a gifting item. By design, the stories are subtle and warm, keeping away from the dhoom and dhamaka of typical Diwali advertising, to instead capture the spirit of the festival.”

The storyline is inspired by real life situations that will encourage people to introspect and experience how shift in attitudes and thinking can lead us to make a difference via the ad’s core message.

L&K Saatchi & Saatchi senior vice president Debarjyo Nandi added, “This Diwali, Pepperfry has made a change. And its message is just that, ‘to make a change’ by reaching out to someone and spreading the happiness. In these TVCs we have used furniture as the trigger for this change.”

Pepperfry chief marketing officer Kashyap Vadapalli said, “In the past 18-24 months, brand Pepperfry has grown significantly and established itself as the number one destination for furniture and other home products in the country. We are now in a position to move beyond communicating just the features of a great furniture product or experience to establish Pepperfry as an agent of transformation. We’ve tapped into the Diwali festive spirit to make an appeal to the consumers to: ‘Iss Diwali Kuch Badal Ke Dekhiye.’”

Vadapalli further added, “We really want consumers to make a change and connect with the goodness within themselves, something that they don’t do in their busy daily routines, and then extend that connect to the brand because of the key role it can play in how this life enhancement can be manifested.”

  • Publicis & Facebook to host forum for financial services brands

Publicis & Facebook to host forum for financial services brands

MUMBAI: Publicis Groupe and Facebook have come together to host an event that addresses brands in the banking, financial services and insurance categories (BFSI).

The event named, ‘Financial Services Forum,’ will address the key trends in the industry, share consumer insights, challenges and solutions, case studies and recent progress in the measurement area.

The event will be held on 4 November, 2015 at the Trident, Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai.

Zenith Optimedia Group chief executive officer Anupriya Acharya said, “These are exciting times for both the BFSI sector and digital media! The Indian government’s push on added licenses for banking to promote financial inclusion and the call for a Digital India provides the perfect setting for a forum like this. Our digital marketing brands have an extensive experience in the BFSI segment and have in fact made much progress on even testing out how platforms like Facebook can make a difference to this segment, which has not been very intuitive so far. I keenly look forward to some interesting learnings being shared at this forum.”

“The Financial Services Sector in India was amongst the first industries to adopt digital. The consumer’s shift from desktop to mobile requires a paradigm shift. This forum is the coming together of experts from across the spectrum – marketers, media and creative agencies, technology partners, and publishers – to leverage the power of personalised marketing at scale to drive awareness of new and existing services, grow businesses and deliver extraordinary customer service for banks, insurers, credit card issuers or any other part of the financial services ecosystem,” added Facebook India managing director Kirthiga Reddy.

Starcom MediaVest Group chairman Hanley King said, “Driving real world business and marketing deliverables today has to be driven by large and complex consumer data sets. Facebook is at helm of this form of marketing. We have been able to leverage its user data and its ability to customise marketing efforts through custom audiences and website integration to drive tangible sales uplift and build deeper consumer relationships to improve lifetime value of customers. The direction that we are seeing Facebook taking by introducing audience data based solutions such as Atlas is inline and core to our principle of driving precision marketing at scale. We hope through this event we help our clients in the BFSI space to move further down the path of precision marketing and get excited about the possibilities the platform has to offer.”

  • Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg on India, Internet.org, net neutrality

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg on India, Internet.org, net neutrality

MUMBAI: Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has set his sights on the Indian market in a big way, which according to him is one of the key markets for the social networking company.

In his second visit this year to the country, the young entrepreneur visited the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, where close to 900 students attended the Question & Answer session.

Zuckerberg addressed issues such as Net Neutrality, internet access as well as Facebook’s initiatives to invest in India.

Speaking at the event, Zuckerberg said that his mission was to connect everyone in India to the internet.

According to a UK based consultancy We Are Social and Facebook India, of the 1.49 billion people who check Facebook at least once a month, more than 130 million are in India. It is more than anywhere outside the US and the number has been rising in recent years.Facebook had 118 million users in 2014 as compared to a year earlier, which was 93 million.

Zuckerberg explained that Facebook’s initiative Internet.org has nothing insidious but aims to provide connectivity for access to education, health care and financial services to millions of Indians. Internet.org was launched in 2013 for a global effort to provide web access to unconnected users in the developing nations.

Speaking on the investment on Artificial Intelligence Systems, Zuckerberg said, “AI is really exciting. We will be able to see smarter computers being built. With AI, it’s going to be less about products and making the existing ones smarter. We are working on a project where AI can describe photos to blind people. Second example, right now the best way to let people know you are safe in terms of a crisis is by yourself or through your friends. In the future maybe satellites and other technologies can help with this.”

He said that almost three million people said they were safe by using Facebook’s safety-check feature after the recent earthquake in Afghanistan. “When there’s a disaster all you want to know if your loved ones are safe,” he said.

He further spoke on Net Neutrality saying, “Most of the people pushing for net-neutrality already have access to Internet. But those who aren’t, can’t sign an online petition for an increase in the Internet. We all have a moral responsibility to look out for those who don’t have access and make sure the rules don’t get twisted to hurt those who don’t have a voice.”

Later, taking to his Facebook page, he posted an update about the Townhall Q&A in Delhi saying, “We just wrapped up our Townhall Q&A in Delhi! People asked great questions about how we can connect everyone in India to the internet, how we provide everyone with a great education and how to build a strong company. I really appreciate these Q&AS. Hearing what you care about makes Facebook better. Thanks to everyone who asked a question or tuned in!”

9XM innovates with on-ground standup comedy show Laughter Shots

MUMBAI: Venturing into a new area of content creation, music channel 9XM has launched a new on-ground standup comedy show called Laughter Shots. The first show with the comedian group ‘Improv Comedy,’ was held on 4 October, 2015 at The Little Door, Mumbai at 8 pm.

This is the first time that 9XM experimented with an on-ground comedy event, where standup comedians got people high on laughter whilst getting drunk themselves on shots.

What’s more, the channel also has plans to hold six more shows across Mumbai till January, 2016. Plans are also afoot to take the property to other cities like Pune, Bangalore and Delhi.

Laughter Shots featured the city’s comic talent trying to find the audience’s funny side, one shot at a time. It indeed was a radical step that changed the way comedy is delivered.

While the channel has until now focused on Bollywood music interspersed with animated characters like Bheegi Billi, Badshah Bhai etc, with this new on-ground initiative, 9XM is forging towards comedy.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, 9XM vice president marketing Kapil Sharma says, “It was our first initiative towards such an event and thus we expect engagement of more people by promoting it via social media and to 100 – 200 people through the on-ground show.”

Sharma says that the first event witnessed a packed house with over 120 – 150 people turning up for the event at The Little Door in Mumbai.

Since it was a premature experimentation, the show was not broadcast on the channel. Instead the venture tasted success by targeting people through digital media. Word of mouth was also a key element for the endeavour.

Sharma informs, “Building audience, connecting with viewers and creating high quality content being the prime focus of 9XM, selective moments from the on-ground show will be captured and uploaded on 9XM’s digital and social media accounts on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin amongst others.”

9XM has a community of eight million people across various social media platforms and will be pushing Laughter Shots to their entire fan base online.
