  • Zomato founder calls out ‘intolerance’ on social media after language row

Zomato founder calls out ‘intolerance’ on social media after language row

MUMBAI: Founder of online food delivery platform Zomato, Deepinder Goyal has called out the rise of ‘intolerance’ among the social media users, after the platform found itself in the eye of another Twitter storm early this week.

“An ignorant mistake by someone in a support centre of a food delivery company became a national issue. The level of tolerance and chill in our country needs to be way higher than it is nowadays. Who’s to be blamed here?” Goyal tweeted.

The issue arose after a customer from Tamil Nadu tweeted a screenshot of a chat he had with one of the customer care executives. The complaint was related to a missing food item in the order. According to the customer, the employee told him, that the amount cannot be refunded and apparently schooled him for not knowing Hindi while discussing the order detail. “Tagged me a liar as she didn’t know Tamil,” he further accused, tagging the app with the words, “Not the way you talk to a customer. @zomatocare”

The incident soon spiralled into a trending topic on social media, with users tweeting #Reject_Zomato and criticising Zomato, for the employee’s reference to Hindi as “the national language of the country.” Some local politicians also joined in the company’s critique, leading to a knee-jerk reaction from Zomato.

The company soon issued a public apology and announced the termination of the woman employee for “negligence towards our diverse culture”, highlighting that it understands that food and language are core to any culture and Zomato takes both of them seriously.

However, the company reversed its decision a day later and reinstated the employee. “This alone is not something she should have been fired for. This is easily something she can learn and do better about going forward,” tweeted Goyal, adding that the call centre agents are young people, who are at the start of their learning curves and careers. “They are not experts on languages and regional sentiments. Nor am I, btw.”

The Zomato founder also took the opportunity to express his concern over the rising intolerance on social media, and shared a word of advice to Twitterati: “Having said that, we should all tolerate each other’s imperfections. And appreciate each other’s language and regional sentiments.”, adding, “We are all the same, as much as we are different.”

The case is part of a series of incidents in the recent past, wherein brands and advertising agencies have been targeted by overzealous social media in the country. Recently FabIndia came under fire for an ad it tweeted regarding its latest festive collection titled ‘Jashn-e-riwaaz’. The tweet was later taken down after a vitriolic campaign was run against the brand by some self-proclaimed groups for using Urdu words for a Diwali collection.

Earlier fashion e-comm, Nykaa has also came under fire on social media for its online Navratri offers on condoms and lubes. Ed-tech platform Unacademy was also trolled recently for a skit that some social media users termed as “Anti-Hindu”. Not long before, ethnic wear brand Mohey came under attack on social media for a Wedding ad featuring its brand ambassador Alia Bhatt.

  • Fabindia’s association with IPL helped the brand record 40-50% growth

Fabindia’s association with IPL helped the brand record 40-50% growth

MUMBAI: While retailers across the country have been facing a decreased footfall in the stores, Fabindia’s partnership with the Indian Premier League this year helped it record a growth of up to 50 per cent. For a brand, that had never advertised on television before, this association with the big-ticket event, which was aired on Star’s sports channels, across 8 languages, proved out to be a fine first move.

As style partner for the exciting season of cricket, Fabindia styled more than 100 on air cricket experts in over 1000 designs from their menswear collection, as they discussed the game on air. This activity not only gave them 229 hours of brand exposure but also a 96 per cent increase in sponsorship awareness.

Fabindia CMO Karan Kumar said, “Post-IPL, we had an increase in footfalls and conversions in the menswear range. We recorded a growth of 40-50 per cent over the same period last year.”

The activity also helped the brand gain a 22 per cent uplift in Google searches.

Brand-nomics’ Viren Razdan noted that IPL is an attractive destination but a crowded space with its own rules of play. However, Fabindia’s tactical approach did good for the brand in aiding its awareness of men’s occasion wear, which had been fairly low before the association, despite it being a powerful brand.

He said, “FabIndia is a powerful brand but its association/awareness of men’s  occasion wear has been fairly low, so a partnership gives them a cut through the clutter IPL’s eyeball strength is very high"

While sponsorships like these might come out as a costly proposition, the return on investment has been spectacular for Fabindia, which got widespread popularity among the masses with strategic placement of brand visibility during the game.

Karan Kumar added, “We cracked a concept that was both innovative and cost-effective to showcase our comprehensive indo-western men’s range with the help of cricket.”

  • Fabindia launches Fabfamily – a unique loyalty program

Fabindia launches Fabfamily – a unique loyalty program

MUMBAI: Fabindia has announced the roll out its first-ever loyalty program, Fabfamily. A five-tier program, this presents a membership based program with unique experiences for the company’s expanding customer base.

Launched simultaneously across online and brick and mortar stores, the loyalty program allows aggregation and redemption of points across all Fabindia stores. Besides giving customers the opportunity to earn and accumulate points against their shopping spends, feedback and referrals, the Fabfamily loyalty program extends to offer curated experiences, such as a vacation in an inspired environment, a fabulous meal at a handpicked restaurant, an adventurous trail in the outdoors, or a discovery trip into a unique artisanal cluster.

Talking about this initiative, Fabindia managing director Viney Singh stated, “Fabfamily is unlike any loyalty program in the retail space. Our customers can not only make their future purchases attractive by redeeming points, but can also choose from a host of special, curated experiences which we will bring in conjunction with our select partners.” He further added, “We want to make our relationship with our customers more delightful. We are confident that the Fabfamily program will strengthen our connect and engagement with our customers across the country and provide real value.”

Fabindia has also launched a new website for customers to enrol and engage with the program. Depending on the tier customers are enrolled in, they can earn between 1 per cent and 7 per cent reward points for every Rs 100 spent.

  • FabIndia sets aside 40% on digital advertising

FabIndia sets aside 40% on digital advertising

MUMBAI: Get India to explore India’s diverse culture and craft – that’s the target FabIndia has set for itself. The retail chain sells everything from garments to furnishings to ethnic products which are handmade by rural India’s craftspeople.

Established in 1960 by John Bissell, an American working for the Ford Foundation, FabIndia started off by exporting home furnishings, before stepping into domestic retail in 1976, when it opened its first retail store in Greater Kailash, New Delhi. 40,000 artisans are engaged in employment for sourcing its products today.

But a lot has changed in the last 60 years. The media outlets have changed, consumers have evolved, business has transformed and so has the economy. To keep pace with consumers’ changing needs, FabIndia has introduced a new way of shopping for its customers in the form of experience centres. In addition to this, it houses a Fabcafé, an interior design studio, an organic wellness centre and an alteration studio.

First piloted in March in Delhi this is the second such experience store for the retailer. The next store in line to get the experience centre will be FabIndia Kala Ghoda, Mumbai which should be ready to launch by April 2018. The company plans to have a total of 10 centres by 2018 spread out in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

With changing times, brands ought to evolve and tweak their communication with audience from time to time. Brands today are shifting gears and investing more on digital platforms and shrinking traditional media ad spends (television, print and OOH). FabIndia spends 40 per cent of the advertising budget on digital platforms by creating customised content for audiences on platforms like Facebook, Google, Instagram and Twitter. The brand has become increasingly strong on digital and social on the last five to six months.

Although the brand deals with premium customers, FabIndia head of brand and marketing Karan Kumar suggests that FabIndia is a category in itself and hence cannot be included in any price range. “Our product line starts from under Rs 1000 and goes beyond Rs 10,000. We cut across all kind of income brackets and demographics,” he says.

Undeterred by rivals, Kumar says, “We don’t consider any other brand as a competition as our appeal is to a certain customer who resides in the same mind space as us which is a sense of self pride about India and its traditions.”

FabIndia has over 280 stores across India in 95 cities. Despite a presence in smaller towns, the core focus is still urban metros and mini metros. Internationally, it has retail outlets spread out in Italy, Singapore, Dubai, Fiji, Qatar, Central Asia, Middle Eastern and Southern markets but will add more stores in Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia. Being optimistic about overseas business, Kumar adds, “Gradually, we will be looking at various international markets over the next 12-18 months.”

Foreign tourists, who are charmed by the country’s myriad cultures, generate a considerable amount of revenue. But the main chunk of revenue is still from Indian customers. FabIndia made a net profit of Rs 1000 crore last year and is looking at a double digit growth this financial year.
