    Group M global CEO Kelly Clark Steps down

    MUMBAI: As reported by The Drum, Group M global chief executive officer Kelly Clark has resigned from his post after serving it for three years. He, reportedly, will be replaced by current Group M agency Essence chief executive officer Christian Juhl.

    The agency is still finding a replacement for Juhl.

    Clark has led the WPP media giant globally since October 2016 and before that ran its North America and European operations. He has served exclusively in WPP agencies since joining its JWT advertising firm as a media director in New York in 1988.

    From there, Clark moved to Mindshare where he held chief exec roles in Asia Pacific and the UK and he also enjoyed a four-year spell in charge of Maxus before taking the reins at Group M.

    Essence creates COO APAC role, ropes in new VP for client partner

    MUMBAI: Essence, a global data and measurement-driven agency and part of GroupM, today announced the appointments of Kingshuk Mitra and Monica Bhatia to bolster its APAC leadership team. Earlier this year, Essence announced it had nearly doubled its APAC office count after opening operations in Bengaluru, Jakarta, Melbourne and Mumbai. The company is working towards an explosive regional growth.

    Mitra, former managing director of Maxus Philippines, has been named COO APAC, a newly created position. He has recently transitioned into his new role as Essence’s first COO of APAC, and will help APAC CEO Kyoko Matsushita, and wider regional leadership, to define and achieve the agency’s strategic priorities. He will also partner with client services and wider agency disciplines to ensure the delivery of consistent work quality to Essence clients, and to drive day-to-day operational effectiveness. Mitra will be based out of Essence’s Singapore office and will report to global COO Rich Mooney.

    “Essence has built its success on the back of operational excellence across verticals, which is an integral part of the agency’s DNA,” said Mitra. “The role in itself is very exciting to me, as it involves creating the backbone of the operational structure across various projects.     Bhatia has joined as vice president, client partner to lead the Google business in APAC. In her new role, Bhatia will oversee the account across six APAC markets, including its Singapore-based hub. Specifically, she will be accountable for building and nurturing strong, collaborative client relationships across the region and driving account strategy. Bhatia will report into president and global client director Dave Marsey. Bhatia previously served as head of digital at Maxus, where she was charged with building the agency’s digital product proposition across 14 markets in APAC. Additionally, she led regional digital duties for key clients such as L’Oreal, Jetstar and Unicharm. Bhatia will be based out of Singapore and brings a wealth of experience in providing integrated media solutions to companies across FMCG, airlines, banking and food and beverage categories.

    Essence hires Sonali Malaviya as VP – client partner

    MUMBAI: Essence, a data-driven global agency and a part of GroupM, has announced the appointment of Sonali Malaviya as the vice president – client partner. She will be reporting to Anand Chakravarthy, managing director, Essence India and will lead the Google relationship, based in the Gurgaon office.

    With experience of more than 15 years, Malaviya is a seasoned marketing professional working with global brands and companies. Prior to Essence, she was the COO of Colorbar Cosmetics. She was also the India Country Marketing lead at Twitter and helped set up and navigate the company’s marketing offering to some of the biggest domestic and international brands in the market. Malaviya was also a principal partner at Mindshare Delhi and has done stints in leading media agencies and a research firm.

    “Sonali’s diverse experience and her width of exposure working on both the agency and the client side, makes her a real asset to have at Essence and the ideal choice to steward our longstanding relationship with Google.     In March, Essence announced its debut in Shanghai, China and Sydney, Australia.

    GroupM acquired Essence, the largest buyer of digital media, in November 2015. It is GroupM’s fifth global brand.

    As the formerly independent agency continues to scale globally, APAC remains a key growth region due to Essence’s commitment to deliver its proposition to its existing client roster across greater geographies, and to support the abundance of new business activity. India, in particular, holds strong strategic importance given its status as a dominant and dynamic growth market within the region, a company statement said.

    To help ease its transition into India, Essence turned to Maxus, a GroupM agency in India.  The unified Essence-Maxus team will be based out of the GroupM Delhi office.

    In addition to transferring several existing Essence and Maxus employees to fill relevant positions, the agency is actively recruiting to hire local, outside talent for roles across the account management, strategy and planning, advertising operations, biddable and performance disciplines.
