    Blockbusters fail to drive up Eros Q3 net

    MUMBAI: Eros International Media‘s (Eros) net profit for the fiscal third quarter has declined 6 per cent to Rs 652 million from Rs 690.9 million in the same quarter last fiscal.

    The company‘s total income for the quarter reduced 10 per cent to Rs 3.7 billion from Rs 4.11 billion in the corresponding quarter.
    Direct cost for the quarter declined to Rs 2.59 billion from Rs 2.93 billion in the previous fiscal. Other expenses grew 36 per cent to Rs 188.7 from Rs 139 million.

    The third quarter was powered by successful releases such as English Vinglish, Maatraan, Son of Sardaar, Thuppaki, Khiladi 786, and Dabangg 2 (overseas).

    Son of Sardar received favourable reviews from audiences and reported a net box office collection of Rs 1.08 billion worldwide. Khiladi 786 also scored well at the box office reporting a net collection of Rs 770 million worldwide.

    English Vinglish, a women-hero family entertainer, received unanimous thumbs up from critics as well as audiences. This film reported an impressive net box office collection of Rs 675 million worldwide.

    Thuppaki raked in a net box office collection of Rs 1.8 billion in the domestic market and has become the fourth film to join the Rs 1 billion club in Tamil films. ‘Maatraan‘, another high profile release, was also well received and reported a net book office collection of Rs 900 million at domestic box office.

    During the quarter under review, the company said it had entered into a number of satellite television licensing deals which resulted into valuable contribution to its revenues.

    Eros International Media MD Sunil Lulla said, “Firstly it gives me great pleasure to declare an interim dividend at 15 per cent and thank all our shareholders who put their faith in us. Our slate was a well architected combination of modest budget high concept films as well as high profile big star cast films in Hindi and Tamil, which performed very well at the box office resulting in corresponding strong revenues through other channels of distribution like television and digital.

    Eros, which partnered HBO to launch HBO Hits and HBO Defined, said that carriage deals for the two premium Hollywood and Bollywood movie channels are being worked out. The carriage deals and specific details of the launch will be announced separately in due course, it said.

    “We are extremely excited about our collaboration with HBO who are leaders in premium television arena globally. The collaboration will allow us to unlock the value of our library and new film slate even more and foray into the growing premium television market in India where television viewers will be offered advertising free compelling Bollywood and Hollywood content,” Lulla added.

    NEW DELHI: Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar’s latest release Khiladi 786, directed by Ashish R Mohan, has collected Rs 112 million net at the Box Office on its first day, according to Eros, the distributor of the film.

    The film which was released in 2,700 screens on 7 December, recorded fantastic amount of footfalls in both single screens and multiplexes in the morning and matinee shows across the country, Eros said

    After this opening, exhibitors feel the word of mouth publicity for the film is expected to take its collection to a new high over the weekend.

    MUMBAI: Eros Now has created quite a buzz overseas with its online offering of full length Hindi feature films, songs, music videos and other short form movie content.

    Full length movies are part of a monthly subscription, currently available at a special introductory rate of $5.99 overseas while all short form content is available for free.

    The brand has just released TV commercials in the UK and USA that highlight the features of their unique services. The television commercials are running on all popular South Asian channels.
    The newly launched TV commercial lists all the features including the newly released iPad App and displays the latest blockbusters like Cocktail, English Vinglish, Ferrari Ki Sawaari and many more, that are available to watch on their website.

    The brand is also offering a 14-day completely free trial for all new users where they can access any film that is available in Eros‘ ‘Now Library‘.

    Satellite rights, box office drives Eros’ Q1 net up 45%

    MUMBAI: Strong box office collections helped Indian film production and distribution company Eros International Media to report a 45 per cent increase in net profit in the first quarter ended 30 June 2012.

    Eros’ net profit in the first quarter was Rs 314.10 million, up from Rs 217 million a year ago.

    The company said its total income rose 60 per cent to Rs 2.59 billion in the first quarter from Rs 1.62 billion a year earlier on strong theatrical revenue growth driven by robust theatrical pre-sales and box office performance of Housefull 2, Teri Meri Kahaani, Vicky Donor and Ferrari ki Sawaari.

    Eros’s operating profit increased 42 per cent to Rs 523 million during the first quarter of 2012-13 from Rs 369 million a year earlier.

    During the quarter, the company released five Hindi language films and 18 Tamil and other Indian language films. Strong demand for satellite rights for the films also drove revenue growth. As part of the pre-sales strategy, Eros has signed a licensing agreement with Viacom18 Media. Accordingly, Viacom18’s Colors television channel will exclusively telecast Cocktail, Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi, Khiladi and catalogue films.

    Eros International Media MD Sunil Lulla said, “We are once again proud to have picked a fine slate of films such as Housefull 2, Ferrari ki Sawaari and Vicky Donor which have not only performed well at the box office but also been successfully monetised across television and digital platforms.”

    “We have continued to optimise our de-risking strategy with the combination of pre-sales and self distribution to give us consistent cash flow and provide visibility of revenues. We are especially encouraged by the box office success of a modest budget film like Vick Donor which demonstrated potential for smaller films among a growing multiplex audience and widening the appeal of our films.”

    Films slated for release by Eros over the next two years include Chakravyuh by Prakash Jha (starring Arjun Rampal, Abhay deol), Attacks of 26/11 by Ram Gopal Varma, Go Goa Gone (starring Saif Ali Khan), Tanu Weds Manu Season 2, Namak starring Shahid Kapoor and directed by Prabhu Deva and Sarkar 3 by Ram Gopal Varma, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan.

  • Cocktail collects Rs 650 mn globally in opening weekend, says Eros

    MUMBAI: Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and debutante Diana Penty starrer romcom, Cocktail, has grossed Rs 650 million at the box office globally in its opening weekend, said Eros International.

    The film has grossed over Rs 500 million in India with a net collection of Rs 350 million, and Rs 150 million from the overseas release.

    Produced by Eros International and Illuminati Films and directed by Homi Adajania, the film released worldwide on 13 July.

    Commenting on the film‘s performance, Eros International Media Senior VP – Distribution – India Nandu Ahuja said, “Cocktail is a young urban film and has taken the metros and multiplexes by storm. We are anticipating the youth to drive the momentum through the week and maintain the good numbers.”

    MUMBAI: Eros Group has reappointed Jyoti Deshpande as its chief executive officer and managing director.

    Deshpande had gone a sabbatical from 1 January 2011.

    Kishore Lulla, currently chairman and CEO of Eros International plc, will revert to his previous role of executive chairman.

    Lulla said, “The Board of Eros welcomes Jyoti back with open arms. She has been an instrumental part of our growth story and is ideally placed to take the company to new heights.”

    Deshpande will also be appointed as executive director of Eros International Media.

    “Eros has played a significant part in my life for well over a decade and I am delighted to recommence my tenure as Group CEO & MD. I am looking forward to picking up where I left off and excited about continuing a successful journey with Eros,” Deshpande said.

    Eros’ film to be shot in Fiji

    MUMBAI: The filming of Eros and Next Gen Films‘ 3G, to be shot in the Fiji Islands shortly, will have a multiplying effect on the Fiji economy.

    Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum feels the shoot of the film in the island is a great opportunity for his country. He was speaking at the launch of the film, a thriller based on mobile telecommunications.

    According to Khaiyum, numerous jobs have been created for locals including a crew of 40 who will assist the production team on the sets and another seven Fijians who will also play roles in the film.

    The shooting of the film, directed Vikram Rajani, will begin by the end of May, said acting chief executive of the Fiji Audio Visual Commission (FAVC) Florence Swamy. The 30-day shoot will be held mostly in the Western Division with a few scenes in and around Sigatoka and a couple in Suva.

    The film will cost around seven million Fiji dollars (US $4 million) and the shoot will begin by the end of May. Two more films under the same production with a joint budget of around 14 million Fiji dollars (US $8 million) will be shot in Fiji soon.

    The films are expected to be released in at least 700 to 800 screens in India and are going to be distributed to countries worldwide, according to the producers.

    The lead roles in the film would be played by renowned Neil Nitin Mukesh and fashion model and actress Sonal Chauhan.

    Meanwhile, the local government has announced a rebate scheme of 47 per cent to attract filmmakers to the island nation as this would be a great opportunity for locals.

    Eros acquires Tamil theatrical rights of Maatran

    NEW DELHI: Eros International Media Ltd has acquired the Tamil theatrical rights of Maatran, produced by AGS Entertainment.

    Eros has been assigned the Tamil theatrical rights for Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka and the Tamil audio rights of the movie.

    Maatran is slated for release on 15 August.

    Maatran is an upcoming Tamil action thriller film directed and co-written by KV Anand and scripted by Subha. It stars Suriya who would portray two different roles along with Kajal Aggarwal. Harris Jayaraj has composed the tunes and the tracks in the music album.

    Commenting on the acquisition, Sunil Lulla, Managing Director, Eros International Media Ltd said, “With Maatraan, Eros continues to explore and establish its presence in the regional film markets. The film promises to be one of its kind action thrillers and we are happy to associate with AGS Entertainment to release this much awaited film with the hugely popular Suriya”.

    AGS Entertainment director Kalpathi S. Aghoram added, “There exists a huge potential for AGS Entertainment and Eros International to synergize given our experience in Tamil film production and their global presence with content spread across most leading Indian languages.”

    The film has been shot across diverse locales including the Pakistan border, Hyderabad, Wai in Maharashtra and Jodhpur. A major portion of the film was filmed in the Balkan region countries like Russia, Croatia, Serbia, Albania and Macedonia. The film has used performance capture technology in some of its action scenes.

    “With our expanding portfolio of multiplexes and our possible foray into other emerging areas of entertainment, we are working towards establishing the Kalpathi Group as a quality player of repute across the sector,” said AGS Entertainment director Kalpathi S. Suresh.

    NEW DELHI: Eros International Media Ltd (Eros International) has acquired the worldwide distribution rights of Vidhu Vinod Chopra‘s Ferrari Ki Sawaari. Eros will release the film worldwide on 15 June.

    Ferrari Ki Sawaari, a heartwarming film about a young father‘s endeavor to fulfill the dream of his talented 10-year-old son, is Vinod Chopra Films‘ first release after 3 idiots, the much acclaimed and high grosser at the box office.

    Directed by Rajesh Mapuskar, written by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajesh Mapuskar with dialogues by Rajkumar Hirani, Ferrari Ki Sawaari stars Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani and Ritwik Sahore with a song appearance by Vidya Balan.

    Eros ties up with Shilpa Shetty for ‘Dishkiyaaoon’

    NEW DELHI: Eros International Media Ltd has teamed up with Shilpa Shetty Kundra’s Essential Sports & Media Pvt Ltd (ESMPL) to present ‘Dishkiyaaoon’.

    The gangster action film will star Sanjay Dutt, Harman Baweja, Prashant Narayanan and Aditya Pancholi and will be directed by debutant Sanamjit Singh Talwar.

    Filmed in Mumbai, Dishkiyaaoon shows the Mumbai underworld in a completely new light and has real and contemporary characters.

    The film is an action thriller laced with black humour. It is being shot on real locations by the German Director of Photography Axel Fischer and has music by Ram Sampat.

    Announcing the deal, Eros MD Sunil Lulla said, “Eros is looking forward to this collaboration with Shilpa and Raj Kundra for their debut production. Dishkiyaaoon, as the title promises will be a fun action film and will be a treat for action loving movie buffs”.
