    Starbucks launches Starbucks Studios

Mumbai: Starbucks is launching Starbucks Studios, a new production studio aimed at creating original entertainment to foster deeper connections and spark conversations. This initiative is in partnership with Sugar23, a media company founded by Oscar-winning producer Michael Sugar. Sugar23 specializes in connecting brands with filmmakers to produce high-quality branded content.

The studio’s launch coincides with broader changes at Starbucks. In March, CEO Laxman Narasimhan announced a new global leadership structure that took effect on 1 April, designed to support Starbucks’ global expansion goals. The coffee giant plans to increase its number of stores from the current 38,000 to around 55,000 worldwide, with a significant portion of new locations opening outside the U.S.

Starbucks has long focused on human connection, and Starbucks Studios will further this mission through collaborations across various creative fields, including the arts, design, architecture, fashion, publishing, and music. This initiative also includes hiring a global brand creative leader, who will report directly to Narasimhan.

Starbucks joins other brands, such as Nike, AB InBev, Saint Laurent, Mailchimp, and LVMH have ventured into creating their own entertainment divisions.

This isn’t Starbucks’ first foray into entertainment. In 2016, the company released “Upstanders,” a two-season original series, and in 2019, it released the documentary “Hingakawa,” which marked the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide. Additionally, Starbucks was involved in the six-part documentary series “This Is Football,” which explored the impact of football on communities worldwide.

Spearheading Rusk’s journey into the heart of Gen-Z storytelling, Ajit Manerikar, Sr VP of production & commercials, orchestrates a team of passionate storytellers dedicated to weaving data-driven narratives that resonate with the digital generation.

Indiantelevision.com caught up with Manerikar to gain more insights on Gen-Z’s behavioural trends, the studios’ upcoming projects or collaborations, Rusk’s strategy of blending TV-style storytelling with snackable content, and more…

    Edited Excerpts:

On Rusk Studios’ inspiration to focus on becoming a Gen-Z first mobile entertainment company and the behavioural patterns of Gen-Z audiences that Rusk Studios has observed

Rusk Studios was inspired to focus on becoming a Gen-Z first mobile entertainment company due to the significant shifts in digital behavior observed in recent years. With the explosion of internet and smartphone penetration, there has been a notable trend of individuals, particularly young adults belonging to Generation Z and Alpha, gravitating towards consuming content on their personal screens.

This surge in mobile entertainment consumption prompted the emergence of a new industry, where content began to be predominantly consumed on mobile devices. Recognizing this trend, we identified a crucial gap in the market – despite the abundance of content available, younger audiences were largely consuming content that was created for older demographics. This presented an opportunity for us to cater specifically to the preferences and interests of Gen-Z audiences.

Today, as the largest Gen-Z/A focused mobile entertainment company in India, we have strategically positioned ourselves to deliver premium serialized content across various platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and OTTs. Our content spans diverse genres including fiction and non-fiction, and encompasses both short and long-form video formats. By aligning our content offerings with the behavioral patterns and preferences of Gen-Z audiences, we have successfully carved a niche for ourselves in the competitive landscape of mobile entertainment.

On Rusk Media navigating the ever-evolving landscape of digital entertainment

At Rusk Media, we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of digital entertainment by staying closely connected to our audience. With a robust presence across four major social media platforms and nearly 20 million subscribers, we’re continually tuned into what content our target audience is consuming. Each month, our channels collectively amass an impressive one billion views, giving us invaluable insights into audience preferences and trends.

Moreover, our dedicated research and analytics team gathers industry insights, allowing us to stay ahead of the curve. By combining these first-hand observations with comprehensive data analysis, we develop content that is not only relevant but also resonates deeply with our audience, particularly Gen Z.

Our focus lies in creating premium, snackable content tailored to the preferences of today’s audiences, who often have shorter attention spans. By crafting themes and storylines that resonate with our viewers, we strive to offer entertainment experiences that captivate and engage, ensuring that Rusk Media remains at the forefront of digital entertainment.

On upcoming projects or collaborations that Rusk is particularly excited about

We’re thrilled about several upcoming projects and collaborations at Rusk Media. While we’re excited to announce new seasons of our popular shows like School Friends, Couple Goals, and Playground, we’re also venturing into exciting new territories this fiscal year. One area of focus is our expansion into content based on real-life stories, biographies, and docu-dramas. We believe in the power of authentic storytelling to captivate and inspire our audience, and we’re eager to bring compelling narratives to life on screen.

Additionally, we’re delving into the rich reservoir of ancient Indian mythology to develop original intellectual properties (IPs). Drawing from this vast and culturally significant source material, we aim to create innovative and immersive storytelling experiences that resonate with audiences both locally and globally.

These projects reflect our commitment to diversifying our content offerings and exploring new creative avenues. We can’t wait to share these exciting ventures with our audience and partners alike.

On Rusk ensuring its content resonates with audiences across different regions and demographics

Ensuring that our content resonates with diverse audiences across different regions and demographics is a key priority for Rusk Media. While our primary audience largely consists of the 15-30-year-old demographic from North India, predominantly Hindi-speaking markets, we understand the importance of catering to a variety of tastes and preferences.

With successful scripted IPs such as Dude, Couple Goals, School Friends, and Playground, we’ve already established a strong connection with our target audience. These shows have resonated well with our audience, providing us with valuable insights into their preferences.  To continue engaging with our audience and staying relevant in the ever-changing landscape, we focus on creating content that reflects the top genres and themes of the time. Whether it’s romance, a slice of life, friendship, or aspiration, we ensure that our content addresses themes that have demonstrated strong acceptability and watch time among our audience.

By remaining attentive to audience feedback and trends, we strive to produce content that not only entertains but also deeply connects with viewers across different regions and demographics. This approach allows us to maintain a strong rapport with our audience while adapting to their evolving needs and interests.

On Rusk’s strategy of blending TV-style storytelling with snackable content for a holistic viewing experience

At Rusk Media, our strategy revolves around crafting storytelling experiences that resonate with Gen-Z audiences. As the saying goes, “Don’t just do it, be it.” We believe in immersing ourselves in the issues, concerns, and motivations of Gen Z, ensuring that our content reflects their worldview authentically. Recognising the infamous short attention spans of Gen Z, we’ve embraced the concept of snackable content, typically lasting around 15 minutes. This format allows us to deliver engaging stories in a manner that aligns seamlessly with our audience’s preferences.

When it comes to incorporating “TV-style storytelling” into our approach, we’re focused on creating multi-episode, multi-season franchises that provide a holistic viewing experience. While the term “TV-style telling” often refers to content with extended narratives and the potential for franchise expansion, we prioritise developing relatable characters and compelling storylines that viewers will want to revisit time and again.

Whether it’s a finite series or a multi-season franchise, we aim to captivate audiences with characters and narratives that leave a lasting impression. By blending TV-style storytelling with snackable content, we offer viewers the best of both worlds: familiar storytelling formats presented in an easily consumable manner, akin to enjoying a quick snack!

On Rusk staying ahead of emerging trends in digital entertainment, and the role you see technology playing in the future of content creation

Staying ahead of emerging trends in digital entertainment is a cornerstone of Rusk Media’s strategy. With a substantial presence across four social media channels, boasting close to 20 million subscribers and over one billion monthly views, we have firsthand insights into the content preferences of our target audience.

Our research and analytics team diligently gathers industry insights, enabling us to develop content that is not only relevant and relatable but also resonates deeply with Gen Z—the primary demographic we cater to. By focusing on top genres and themes like romance, slice of life, friendship, and aspiration, we ensure that our content maintains strong acceptability and watch time among our audience, predominantly 15-30-year-old males from North India’s Hindi-speaking markets.

As digital natives themselves, Gen Z expects personalised and real-time content experiences. To meet this demand, we leverage AI-led solutions to understand their dynamics and preferences better. From AI-driven content recommendations to influencer culture shaping consumption patterns, we closely follow these trends to anticipate and adapt to emerging shifts in the digital entertainment landscape.

Moreover, we recognise the transformative role of technology, particularly AI, in content creation. Gen Z’s affinity for digital expression and creativity is complemented by AI-driven photo and video editing tools, empowering them to produce high-quality content for social media platforms. Additionally, innovations like “Sora” and other text-to-video AI apps herald a new class of entertainment experiences, which we are eager to explore and integrate into our content offerings.

By embracing technology and closely monitoring emerging trends, we position ourselves to deliver innovative and engaging content experiences that resonate with our audience and stay ahead of the curve in the ever-evolving digital entertainment landscape.

    On Rusk Media’s future plans

Our future plans at Rusk Media are centered around continued growth and expansion across multiple fronts. Firstly, we aim to further enhance our IP library by adding to our existing repertoire of over 20 premium IPs. Over the next five years, our goal is to grow this collection to encompass more than 100 diverse and compelling IPs, catering to a wide range of trending content themes.

In addition to strengthening our content portfolio, we are committed to extending our presence across all major platforms in India, both social media and OTT. By maximising our reach and accessibility, we ensure that our content reaches audiences wherever they are, fostering deeper engagement and connection with our brand.

Furthermore, we have ambitious plans to take our IPs global, leveraging their universal appeal to reach audiences beyond Indian shores. By expanding our footprint internationally, we not only broaden our audience base but also establish Rusk Media as a recognised player in the global entertainment landscape.

These strategic initiatives reflect our commitment to innovation, growth, and delivering high-quality content experiences to audiences worldwide. We’re excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and look forward to realising our vision for Rusk Media’s future.

  • “Auraa envisions a future where modeling is valued and respected on par with prestigious professions”: Auraa Talents’ Arpita Das

“Auraa envisions a future where modeling is valued and respected on par with prestigious professions”: Auraa Talents’ Arpita Das

Mumbai: Amidst the dazzling and glittery world of modeling, where trends shimmer and styles evolve, one cannot ignore the prevalent preferences for lighter skin tones that have cast a subtle but persistent shadow over the industry. However, breaking through these conventional norms and redefining beauty standards is Auraa Talents, a dynamic platform founded in 2008 by former model and visionary entrepreneur Arpita Das.

Auraa Talents has not only become a leading force in the creative, modeling, and entertainment sphere but has also emerged as a champion for diversity, empowerment, and inclusivity. As the industry grapples with stereotypes, Auraa stands as a beacon of change, dedicated to eradicating negative perceptions and fostering a culture where every talent, regardless of skin tone, shines with their unique spark and potential.

Indiantelevision.com caught up with Auraa Talents founder & CEO Arpita Das to know more about their evolution since inception, key milestones, training programs for both models and their employees, and much more…

    Edited Excerpts:

On Auraa Talents’ evolution since its inception in 2008, and the milestones that you’re most proud of in its journey

During its inception, Auraa showcased only two international models, reflecting its global ambitions. From its modest beginnings, Auraa has now blossomed into a thriving pool of talent representing 150 plus international and Indian talents and actors, from over 25 countries. We have also worked with diverse clientele such as Coca Cola, Tanishq, Vaseline, and others, over the last 16 years leading to a remarkable impact in the modeling realm.

A few of our proudest milestones over the years are a collaboration with Pocket FM that involved our entire talent cast. They were also chosen to participate in a short film called ‘F se Fantasy’. Moreover, a few of our models were cast alongside prominent celebrities such as Taapsee Pannu, Hrithik Roshan and Samantha Prabhu across advertorial campaigns.

On some of the key challenges you faced in the modeling industry that motivated you to establish Auraa

As soon as I began pursuing modeling full-time, I began to understand the industry’s shortcomings. Back in the 2000s, most brands were attracted to lighter skin tones which posed a challenge as I was more dusky. Furthermore, as I lacked appropriate management at the time, it hindered my visibility on the right platforms. As a result, I set out to establish a platform that would provide equal opportunity to all individuals who shared the same dream.

On Auraa Talents setting itself apart in the competitive modeling and talent management industry

At Auraa, we foster a culture of safety, respect, and empowerment within the community. Our commitment to leaving no stone unturned for our talents and treating every project with utmost priority, sets us apart from the rest.

On the inspiration behind championing equal opportunities for aspiring talents, emphasizing inclusivity regardless of skin tones

Every individual deserves a fair opportunity to showcase their talent and contribute to the industry. We not only nurture creativity, but also celebrate the uniqueness & richness that every individual brings to the table.

At Auraa, we stand for empowerment, by breaking down barriers and amplifying voices, diversity, and the belief that talents shine the brightest when given the opportunity to flourish, irrespective of skin tone or background.

On Auraa promoting a culture of safety, respect, and empowerment within the modeling community

At Auraa, we foster a culture of safety, respect, and empowerment within the modeling community by prioritising education on making informed decisions, building self-belief, and instilling confidence in our models. We provide comprehensive training to help our talents differentiate between right and wrong choices, empowering them to navigate their careers with integrity and resilience. By emphasising self-belief and confidence-building exercises, we equip our models with the tools to assert themselves and thrive in a competitive industry. Our commitment to being readily available for support and guidance ensures that our models feel secure and valued.

On Auraa’s training programs and their impact on the development of both models and its employees

We offer comprehensive training programs catering to both employees and models. Our grooming classes for models focus on refining their skills and presentation, ensuring they are well-prepared for the modeling and entertainment industry. A notable success story here would be of our plus-size model Shefali who faced resistance and skepticism from her family and fiance. However, today, she stands tall not only as a successful model but also as a proud wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law.

Employees benefit from our training programs designed to uplift and empower them, providing a platform for growth. A few notable success stories include Venky, who started as an office boy and now thrives as a talent manager, and Pooja, who transitioned from working in an NGO to international scouting.

Overall, Auraa’s aim through these programs is to inspire the following:

    1. Holistic growth and confidence building

    2. Becoming the better version of themselves

    3. Guidance and support

    4. Ownership and commitment

On your aspirations for Auraa Talents in the coming years

In the coming years, Auraa aspires to achieve the following for its talents:

    1. Brand recognition: The aim is to elevate Auraa to a household name synonymous with modeling excellence. We strive to have Auraa recognised as a trusted and reputable institution in the industry.

    2. Education and awareness: Auraa seeks to educate aspiring models and the general public about the modeling industry. By promoting the significance and artistry of modeling, Auraa aims to elevate the status of models and the industry as a whole.

    4. Global reach and representation: Auraa is working towards creating a path for aspiring models to reach international markets and represent India on a global stage. By providing opportunities for talents to showcase their skills internationally, Auraa aims to open doors for Indian models to achieve success and recognition worldwide.

Overall, Auraa’s aspirations for its talents in the coming years revolve around building a strong foundation of education, awareness, and support, to empower models to reach their full potential, make informed decisions, and succeed both nationally and internationally. By striving to transform the modeling landscape and create new opportunities, Auraa aims to shape the future of modeling in India and beyond.

  • Media & entertainment sector struggles with vice-like grip of layoffs

Media & entertainment sector struggles with vice-like grip of layoffs

Mumbai: Two months into 2024, and the bloodletting in the corporate world continues. A large media and entertainment conglomerate – which failed in its strategic partnership – is believed to be lopping off more than 10 per cent of its work orce in India and overseas. It has already laid off around five to six per cent and more job losses are around the corner.

Another large broadcaster – which is a leader in its genre – has issued pink slips to again about 10 per cent of its staff.

An international news broadcaster that had a run-in with the Indian government has bid ta-ta to the heads of its distribution and ad sales team. Indian news channels too have stricken off the names on their attendance rosters, as they struggle to gain profitability.

“More companies are likely to follow suit as advertisers realign their spends around live sport – especially cricket, both women’s and men’s,” says a media observer. “But all the major players in live sport seem to be finding it tough with advertisers squeezing them for extra inventory, resulting in yields per spot becoming much lower than last year.”

With poaching becoming rampant between broadcasters, more often than not, departees are not being replaced, leaving positions vacant, asking those who stay to double up their jobs for those being asked to go.

The national elections seem to be the only other saving grace for the limping media and entertainment sector – especially news channels.” It is going to be a bonanza,” said a news channel CEO. “But what about after elections, it’s back to the slowdown again?” he questions.

Production houses too have seen the writing on the wall, and have trimmed their rosters. Pointed out a media analyst: “TV and OTT shows budgets have shrunk and those that don’t work are not getting renewals for another season or are being put to the sword. Production houses work with a lot of freelancers – on creative, production, etc – who are hired for projects. Only core creative and production teams are retained. However, some of them have taken proactive steps and have laid off even the core teams and are focusing on show development.”

What’s also dragging down the media and entertainment sector, is the impact that the US writers and actors strike has had on India’s earlier buzzing with activity VFX and animation space. The six month halt has  sent the Indian animation and VFX sector into a tumble with projects being delayed and work slowing down. Most studios – in India and overseas – have streamlined their operations, laying off close to 15,000 professionals over the past few months.

“Jobs are tough to come by,” said the CEO of an international job-reliant studio. “We hope to see some green shoots later this year and more work come our way. Until then, it is belt-tightening time.”

Observers say the sector has not seen the last of the headcount cutting. More bloodshed is on the way.

On the other hand, the layoffs are spurring professionals to start up new ventures – either individually or by roping in like-minded talent to do so. Yes, venture capitalists and private equity firms are not freely disbursing investments to all and sundry in the start up but those that are getting financing are putting their heads to the plough to make their initiatives successful.

You will be happy to know that I am very chill this year’, leaving the audience in hoots.
