Weekend Unwind with: Hansa Mondal, COO & co-founder of Ssoftoons Entertainment Media

Mumbai: With yet another Saturday upon us, it’s time to unwind with a dose of our weekend special series. Weekend Unwind is a tete-e-tete with an industry executive—akin to a virtual water cooler chat – an attempt to get to know the person behind the title a little better.

This week we have with us Ssoftoons Entertainment Media co-founder & COO Hansa Mondal, sharing her nuggets on dealing with the curveballs life throws at us.

Having left a well-secured job, Hansa embarked upon her entrepreneurial journey in 2001, co-founding Ssoftoons—a homegrown animation company—with her business-cum-life partner Sourav Mondal in Howrah, West Bengal. Being a complete novice in the industry, she had to start from scratch by learning to sketch and arming herself with the industry know-how. After nearly a decade, the company saw success in the regional market, and with an intention to have a national presence, the couple moved to Mumbai. Having delivered some successful projects, Hansa is currently working in association with Disney India. In her current position as COO at Ssoftoons, she undertakes planning and execution to keep the flow running smoothly.

    So here goes…

    Ø Your mantra for Life
Since childhood, I have followed “perseverance.” I am aware of my goal and remain focused and dedicated to achieve my dreams.

Ø A book you are currently reading/plan to read
“Start with Why” by Simon Sinek. I read each and every page more than once. It is really inspiring.

Ø Your fitness mantra, especially during the pandemic
To put it simply: inhaling and exhaling. Am a yoga lover. Yoga and pranayama keeps me fit both mentally and physically.

    Ø Your comfort food
Mummy-made Besan (Gram Flour) ke Pakode with green coriander chutney.

Ø When the chips are down a quote/philosophy that keeps you going
“One year equals 365 possibilities.” I calm down and regain the power to think and rethink to overcome the situation. I follow the philosophy of gratitude in every case, be it good or bad.

    Ø Your guilty pleasure
Secretly taking good pens from my kids and husband’s drawers with the intention of not giving them back! I never buy a pen for myself.

Ø When was the last time you tried something new
I have started learning the piano. Practising and mastering this instrument requires dedication and sustained effort. It relaxes my brain.

Ø A life lesson you learnt the hard way
That we all are playing our roles on the stage of life. So, no matter what happens, the show must go on. Time never stops for anyone. It doesn’t care about your worries or about your happiness. So, accept every situation because worries and fears are yours, like happiness.

Ø What gets you excited about life
I started my journey from absolute zero. So, when I am out of projects or in a problem, I never regret it and instead try to give a kickstart, as I know how to grow from zero.

Ø What’s on top of your bucket list
Completing a management course from Harvard University Online.

Ø If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be
Maintaining a database of contacts and keeping in touch. I always preferred to be within myself. But later in my life, I realised my mistake because I came to know that “network = net worth.”

Ø One thing you would most like to change about the world
    Blasphemy.

Ø An activity that keeps you motivated/charged during tough times
Reading good books and doing something constructive, like developing new concepts or plots. Building good stories boost my confidence to fight back.

  • Prioritising ‘Purpose’ is the heart of top-notch communication, say industry experts at PRCA 2022

Prioritising ‘Purpose’ is the heart of top-notch communication, say industry experts at PRCA 2022

Mumbai: Traditional PR today has come a far way from being a one-way tunnel to thrust information out to the public. It has evolved into a fundamental component of marketing and is no longer considered a stand-alone area of expertise. It is a function that works in tandem with a company’s advertising, social media strategy, new business efforts, internal communication, and more.

The second edition of PR & Communication Aces, organised by IndianTelevision.com on 24 August at Gurgaon’s Crowne Plaza, aims to throw light on these emerging and diverse aspects of the PR and communications industry, even as it brings notice to the industry’s rising stars, celebrating their achievements and rewarding their contributions.

The day-long conference saw keynote addresses and panel discussions focused on PR and communications. Apart from this, the summit also had representation from industry stakeholders, brands & agencies, advertising & marketing professionals & technology service providers.

The event’s first panel was on the topic, “PR and the 360 Degree Communication: Trends, Challenges & Opportunities” where thought leaders from the industry shared their insights on the current trends, challenges, strategies and opportunities in the highly evolving space. The ensuing discussion saw industry experts map the PR trends in the next five years, even as they took a deep dive into the challenges to manage perception and image in today’s times.

The speakers comprised Fortis Healthcare (group vice president) & Fortis HealthCare group head corporate communication & PR Ajey Maharaj, Policy-bazar head of communications & content Apeksha Mishra, PepsiCo India associate director corporate communications Amit Nanchahal, EnKash head of communications Amandeep Arora, Hero Electric Vehicles head of marketing & corporate communications Manu Kumar and BPCL chief general manager PR & brand Syed Abbas Akhtar. The discussion was moderated by Hill+Knowlton Strategies CEO Abhishek Gulyani.

The panel debated how communications agencies and the PR profession have evolved in the recent past, and what more could be done while strategizing for a win-win situation. The discussion also delves into the next generation of consumers (the Gen Z) who are primarily exposed to the internet, where digital PR and digital marketing dominate.

With the rise of everything digital, post pandemic, becoming digital-savvy is vital to continue in the PR and communication domain, noted Fortis Healthcare’s Ajey Maharaj. People have become very conscious about health issues, including mental health issues post-covid, hence emotional attachment is another aspect that a brand needs to be mindful about and take cognisance of while communicating with the audience for effective communication, he added.

Panellists deliberated on the exponential transformation in the PR and communications space in the last few years, especially post-pandemic when a lot of things as we knew them underwent changes. It is important to adapt to this change in consumer mindset, while communicating to the audience, the industry experts agreed.

The evolution of the role of PR into actually a communication function from merely a PR function happened during the pandemic, stated Policy Bazaar’s Apeksha Mishra. Purpose-driven communication is at the heart of our strategies and objectives, she added. “How we are bringing trust, compassion, and empathy while interacting with the customers has come out of this pandemic times.”

The significance of purpose-driven and authentic communication, which has manifested especially during the pandemic, was also stressed by the experts. In today’s environment, the corporate sector needs a good communication strategy that can be identified by the audience as genuine and not just a fad, noted Hill+Knowlton Strategies’ Abhishek Gulyani at the PR and Communication Summit 2022.

Gone are the days where brands can run a campaign without a purpose. Today we need an outcome, agrees PepsiCo India’s Amit Nanchahal. In the last two years, a lot of brands have pivoted towards purpose-driven campaigns. They have also realised that they need to be solving a problem rather than selling, which they always do. “We need to live the purpose by ensuring that brands keep up their promise to customers and communities,” he added. Walking the talk is crucial when it comes to communication.

With paid media, online press, bloggers/vloggers, podcasts, social media influencers, content marketing, etc., the consumer reach outlets have multiplied manifold today, making 360-degree integrated communication a necessity rather than an option, the industry insiders noted.

MTV US using search for a video game concept to spread awareness of Aids menace

MUMBAI: mtvU, which is US broadcaster MTV’s college network and the Kaiser Family Foundation have announced the “Change the Course of HIV Challenge.

This is a competition offering college students digital tools to reduce the spread of HIV/Aids among young people in the US. The challenge asks gamers, activists or any student with a great idea to propose a viral, Web-based video game concept to help raise awareness about HIV/Aids among 15-24 year olds in the US and to promote personal action in response to the epidemic.

The winning individual or team will work with mtvU and the Kaiser Family Foundation — which are committing $75,000 to the development and marketing of the game — to see their idea realised. mtvU GM Stephen Friedman, says, “No undergrad in school today has known a world without HIV/Aids and a new young person someplace in the world is infected every 15 seconds GM. Through this challenge, we hope to inspire college students to use the power of online gaming to engage their peers, re-awaken them to the magnitude of this deadly virus and effect prevention.”

Kaiser Family Foundation VP and director, entertainment media partnerships Tina Hoff says, “The competition is designed to help us reach young people in a different and engaging way to help inform them about HIV/Aids and spur action. As HIV remains the great public health challenge of this generation, it’s essential to find new and creative ways to engage and inform young people about the epidemic.”

The two parties are looking for innovative, interactive concepts for video games that will spread rapidly online. Proposed projects should raise awareness about HIV/Aids among young people in the US, identify ways to stop its spread, and address the silence, stigma and discrimination surrounding the disease.
