    Ava DuVernay to receive 2022 International Emmy Founders Award

    Mumbai: The International Academy of Television Arts And Sciences has announced that Ava DuVernay will receive the 2022 International Emmy Founders Award. The American film and television director, writer and producer will receive the honour at the 50th International Emmy Awards Gala on 21 November 2022 in New York City.

    DuVernay has been nominated for her work on the Netflix’s mini-series When they See Us, based on the infamous Central Park Five case, which portrayed the injustices brought by police treatment of five falsely accused teens to the attention of millions of people around the world, as well as for her work at her production company Array. Along with credits including historical drama Selma, the documentary “13th”, and the movie Disney’s “Wrinkle in Time,” she became the highest-grossing black woman director ever at the US box office.

    In a statement, International Academy president and CEO Bruce L. Paisner said, “Ava DuVernay is a force of nature and this is reflected in the remarkable scope and volume of her work. She makes significant films and television programs, she uses her platform to reshape our industry and continues to lead a career-long effort to bolster women and people of colour in entertainment and ensure inclusivity. We look forward to honouring her extraordinary talent and a prolific decade of leadership at Array, with our Founders Award.”

    On receiving the honour, DuVernay said, “This honour from the International Academy of Television Arts And Sciences is unexpected and wildly appreciated. I thank the organisation for recognising my work and salute their efforts to ensure that storytellers of all backgrounds are amplified and celebrated.”

    RuPaul wins best reality host for fifth year in a row

    MUMBAI: RuPaul won for outstanding host for a reality or competition program at Creative Arts Emmys, breaking Jeff Probst's previous record for wins in the category with a fifth straight Emmy.

    RuPaul in a pre-recorded video speech thanked the Academy adding, "every time I bat my false eyelashes I'm making a political statement. Tonight, the only political statement I want to make is this: love. Love for our LGBTQ brothers and sisters, love for Black queens and brown queens and love for the United States of America where a little gay boy with nothing more than a pussycat wig and a dream can build an international platform that celebrates sweet sensitive souls everywhere."

    RuPaul also included a call to vote on 3 November with a twist on his signature line: "The time has come for you to vote for your life!” He dedicated his Emmy to Drag Race alum Chi Chi DeVayne, who died on Aug 20.

    This year, RuPaul was up against Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman (Making It), Nicole Byer (Nailed It!), Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio (Top Chef), Karamo Brown, Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Bobby Berk, and Jonathan Van Ness (Queer Eye), Daymond John, Barbara Corcoran, Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Kevin O'Leary, and Robert Herjavec (Shark Tank). RuPaul's Drag Race was nominated for a total of 10 Emmys this year. 

    The winners were announced as part of the five-night virtual Creative Arts Emmys event, hosted by Byer. The Primetime Emmys will follow on Sunday, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel from an audience-less Staples Center.

    MUMBAI: Star World Premiere HD premiered Game of Thrones on 26 April. The channel kick-started its campaign with extensive on-air promotions and the network’s reach. The promotions are carried across Hindi and English general entertainment channels as well as sports and infotainment.  

    The buzz only increased as the launch day appeared with countdowns across the network till the very last minute. But the buck did not stop here. The channel spread the excitement not just to its viewers but also to trade partners with a whole week of exciting on-ground activations across 8 media agencies in Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi. The employees of these agencies experienced virtual sword fighting, traded character cards, were welcomed by a violinist playing the title track at the entrance in the morning and much more.  This 6-day long activity was a lead-in to the premiere of Game of Thrones season 6, comprising of 6 different experiences curated around the Game of Thrones theme. In fact, participation benchmarks were crossed and beyond averaging over 70 per cent as the employees participated with much anticipation and gusto.

    Game of Thrones fans are extremely active on the digital platforms, and it was only fitting that the channel went all out online. Star World Premiere HD decided to own Tuesdays as GoT Tuesdays and launched the Amazon Fanlords activity on Twitter. Starting 4 weeks prior to the show launch, every Tuesday, Twitter users could engage in contests, activities and win exclusive Game of Thrones merchandise as they became the Amazon Fanlords.     Golden Globe Awards gets best viewership in 10 years

    MUMBAI: Sunday’s telecast of the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards seems to have exceeded all expectations. If numbers are to be believed the gala drew its best audience in the past decade with 20.9 million people tuning in to watch the Hollywood awards show, Comcast Corp-owned network NBC stated on Monday.

     

    The three-hour awards show, which honors the year’s achievements in film and television, rose six percent in total viewers compared to last year and was up two percent in the 18-49 age group most coveted by advertisers, according to early figures from Nielsen Media Research.

     

    The show hosted for a second consecutive year by comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler was received well once again as the Golden Globe Awards beat other televised ceremonies such as the Emmys and People’s Choice Awards for viewers. The duo have already signed on to host next year’s Golden Globes.

     

    Big film winners at the Golden Globes, which are handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, were historical slavery drama 12 Years a Slave and 1970s corruption romp American Hustle.
