Emma Stone wins Best Actor Female on the 29 Critics Choice Awards

Mumbai: The 29 Critics Choice Awards was a dazzling array as stars graced the event all in style and true Hollywood glamor, as it witnessed the exceptional contributions of raw-talent. The awards recognised the brilliance of creative cinema in the past year. After sweeping the Golden Globe Awards for her portrayal of Bella in Poor Things, Emma Stone has bagged yet another win at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Taking home the trophy for Best Actor Female, The Curse actress’ speech was heartfelt, hilarious and totally on brand.

The 29 Critics Choice Awards was streamed live on Lionsgate Play on 15 January 2024. If you missed it or want to watch it again, make sure to tune into the platform!

Showing her fellow nominees a whole lotta love, Stone said, “I’m going to be honest, I’m in like full blown shock. I didn’t have anything that I was going to say because this is completely crazy. This category is ridiculous – Lily (Gladstone), I mean come on. Margot (Robbie) – what in the. Carrie (Mulligan) – okay. Greta and Sandra Hüller. This doesn’t make any sense. Thank you so much for this, it means so much to me. I was being serious. I don’t know what to say.”

Further thanking her cast and crew, the La La Land actor added, “This table – here is the Poor Things table. This crew, this cast – Mark, Willam Ramy, Chris, Jerrod, Katherine, Hunter, Hanah, Shula – there’s so many unbelievable people that I was lucky enough to work with. Ed Guy and Andrew Low, Tony McNamer and Yorgos, who I call Yoro because that’s how we’re supposed to say it to a Greek man if we’re speaking to them. I love you, thank you for everything this is uh really wild. Playing Bella was one of the greatest joys of my life. I got to unlearn a lot of things in playing her. Unlearn parts of shame and societal stuff that gets put on us, and I’m still working on it.”

Ending with a joke in true Emma fashion, she said, “This is the Critics’ Choice Awards and it is about outside opinion but I’m very grateful to the critics for this. But I’m just learning not to care what you think.”

Golden Globe nominee ‘The Curse’ starring Emma Stone makes its digital premiere in India exclusively on Lionsgate Play

Mumbai: In the satirical black comedy thriller television series The Curse, Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone star as Asher and Whitney, a newlywed couple trying to bring their eco-conscious housing vision to Española, New Mexico. However, their plans are complicated by a supposed curse and Dougie (Benny Safdie), a flawed reality TV producer who sees potential in their story. As the series progresses, the couple becomes entangled in a complex web of ethical dilemmas while also navigating the challenges of maintaining their relationship and trying to start a family.

The show has blown critics away, with Entertainment Weekly dubbing it “the weirdest, most unforgettable show of 2023”, and The Guardian describing it as “exquisitely cringe-worthy”. With an immersive storyline and sterling performances, this unique blend of comedy and thriller promises an unforgettable viewing experience for Lionsgate Play subscribers, who can start streaming the first 8 episodes of the series from 29th December.

In an interview with W Magazine, Emma Stone gushed about her experience working with comedian Nathan Fielder, “He is such a good actor—he really blew my mind. I remember watching a scene a couple days in that I wasn’t in. I was texting him up a storm, saying: ‘You’re one of the best actors I’ve ever seen.’ He’s so great and such a natural on Nathan for You and in The Rehearsal—but he’s playing himself. And still, he’s acting… At any given time, you do start to wonder if maybe there’s a prank happening. Like, someone’s filming you from a distance. That’s the only unsettling part of spending time with him.”

In an interview with Indiewire Nathan Fielder delves into the intriguing concept of uncertainty surrounding the reality of the curse, “It’s the core of the show in a lot of ways. [Asher and Whitney are] projecting things that may or may not exist onto everyone around them, and everyone is sort of doing that to each other. That idea of what’s actually real or what matters in a situation is a lot of what the show is exploring and reveling in. Because it’s easy to sort of go, ‘Oh, well this person’s good or bad,’ or ‘This is real or fake.’ But in a lot of these situations, it’s so much more complicated than that.”

‘The Curse’ exclusively streams Episode 1 to 8 on Lionsgate Play starting 29 December.

  • New Woody Allen film ‘Magic in the Moonlight’ trailer released

New Woody Allen film ‘Magic in the Moonlight’ trailer released

MUMBAI: Yahoo Movies has released the first look trailer of Woody Allen’s new movie Magic in the Moonlight. The movie comes after Allen’s Academy Award winning Blue Jasmine starring Cate Blanchett. Magic in the Moonlight is set in the 1920s France, rather reminiscent of the Academy Award winning Midnight in Paris.

It stars Colin Firth as Stanley, an Englishman posing as an Asian magician who attempts to debunk fake spiritualists. He travels to the south of France to unmask a supposed medium named Sophie (Emma Stone) as a good-looking fake — but ends up falling for her real-world charms instead.

“I had it on a piece of notepaper in my drawer for ages,” Allen told Entertainment Weekly on the film’s period European setting. “I knew it was a good plot, but I kept seeing it as a contemporary thing and something about that just didn’t smell right to me. Then when it occurred to me it could be set in the south of France in the 1920s, all of a sudden it just felt good.”

Magic in the Moonlight boasts an ensemble cast led by Academy Award winning Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) and Golden Globe Award nominee Emma Stone (Easy A) with Hamish Linklater (The Crazy Ones), Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden (Pollock), Academy Award nominee Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award winner Eileen Atkins (Gosford Park).

Imagine Midnight in Paris, with a Match Point and Scoop topping on a You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger cone! True fans of Woody Allen, that reference is for you!

Benedict Cumberbatch exits Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Crimson Peak’

MUMBAI: Benedict Cumberbatch has exited Crimson Peak, the Legendary screamer being directed by Guillermo del Toro.

The reason for his departure is unknown, although sources claim his exit is not due to another project.

Charlie Hunnam, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska remain on board to star in the four-hander gothic horror story that centers on a woman who discovers that her husband might not be who he appears to be.

Peak is scheduled to shoot in January, and the exit at this early stage gives del Toro plenty of time to find a replacement. The filmmaker has already shown he can roll with the punches when he quickly cast Wasikowska after Emma Stone fell off the movie.

Cumberbatch is entering a busy period where many of his completed films will hit screens. Dreamworks’ The Fifth Estate kicks off the Toronto International Film Festival in September, Fox Searchlight’s 12 Years a Slave opens on 18 October, while the all-star August: Osage County opens this Christmas.

He is also voicing the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and is in preproduction on The Imitation Game, in which he will portray gay cryptographer Alan Turing.
