Mipcom to host screening of ‘The English’ on 16 October

Mumbai: RX France (formerly Reed Midem) and All3Media International announced the special red carpet screening of the western “The English” at the entertainment content marketplace Mipcom Cannes on 16 October. The event will be attended by leads Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer, and writer/director Hugo Blick.

The screening will take place at 18:00 (CET) at the Grand Auditorium in Cannes’ Palais des Festivals and will be followed by a Q&A with the attending talent for both delegates and the general public.

More than 10,000 senior international television producers, buyers, commissioners, and creatives from the top studios and platforms in the business will attend the 38th edition of Mipcom Cannes from 17-20 October 2022. The annual international co-production and entertainment content market will feature more than 250 exhibiting studios and distributors from 45 nations.

“The English” is produced by Drama Republic and Eight Rooks. It was created by Hugo Blick—who also serves as an executive producer, director, and writer. Emily Blunt also serves as an executive producer, alongside Greg Brenman (Peaky Blinders, The Honourable Woman) for Drama Republic and Mona Qureshi for the BBC. Colin Wratten (Killing Eve) is the producer. “The English” was commissioned for the BBC by chief content officer Charlotte Moore and BBC drama commissioning former director Piers Wenger. It is co-produced by Amazon Studios and the BBC in association with All3Media International, who handled international sales.

“The English” takes the core themes of identity and revenge to tell a parable about race, love, and power. An aristocratic Englishwoman, Lady Cornelia Locke (Emily Blunt), and Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer) come together in 1890 mid-America to cross a violent landscape built on dreams and blood.

Both of them have a clear sense of their destiny, but neither is aware that it is rooted in a shared past. They must face increasingly terrifying obstacles that will test them to their cores, physically and psychologically. But as each obstacle is overcome, it draws them closer to their ultimate destination, the new town of Hoxem, Wyoming. It is here, after an investigation by the local sheriff, Robert Marshall (Stephen Rea), and young widow Martha Myers (Valerie Pachner), into a series of bizarre and macabre unsolved murders, that the full extent of their intertwined history will be truly understood, and they will come face to-face with the future they must live.

RX France entertainment division director Lucy Smith said, “Mipcom Cannes is back at full strength this year with the biggest global stars hosting screenings of eagerly awaited international series. And what a cast, and what a series to start us off this year. A huge thanks to All3Media International and all the partners for making it happen and we look forward to welcoming Emily, Chaske and Hugo to Cannes and the Grand Auditorium.”

All3Media International CEO Louise Pedersen said, “We are thrilled that Mipcom has selected The English for this special red-carpet screening. Everything about the show is premium – a brilliant script, stellar cast, expertly directed and produced by Drama Republic. Visually stunning, this will be a real treat for MIPCOM delegates and the public alike on the big screen at the Palais.”

Drama Republic CEO and executive producer Greg Brenman said, “Hugo Blick has created a compelling, modern love story set against the epic landscape of a Western. The English is a true adventure that will tell us as much about the times we live in today as the period in which it is set.”

‘Edge of tomorrow’ clocks in as the weekend’s #1 film worldwide

MUMBAI: Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ grossed $111.1 million, making it the weekend’s #1 film internationally and worldwide.  The announcement was made by Domestic Distribution president Dan Fellman and Warner Bros. International Distribution president Veronika Kwan Vandenberg.

Internationally, the film has been in limited release for 12 days, including Wednesday openings, and debuted in an additional 36 countries over the weekend, earning an impressive $82 million, including outstanding returns in Russia with $8.6 million, China with $25 million and Korea at $16.6 million.  The international cumulative gross now stands at $111 million.  On the domestic side, in its first three days of release, ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ has grossed $29.1 million, bringing the worldwide total to $140.1 million and counting.

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “‘Edge of Tomorrow’ has received terrific critical acclaim, which has been echoed by audiences who have responded to the film and the fantastic performances of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.  Word-of-mouth is extremely strong, which should continue to drive moviegoers to the theatre, either for the first time or to enjoy the film again.”

Kwan Vandenberg said, “‘Edge of Tomorrow’ has risen above the crowded summer marketplace and continues to gain momentum, from our massive opening in Korea to the incredible results we’ve seen in Russia and China.  We congratulate Doug Liman, Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and the remarkable filmmakers, cast and crew on reaching this terrific benchmark.”

Oscar nominee Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt star in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ action thriller ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ under the direction of Doug Liman.

The epic action unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission.  Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt).  And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

The international cast also includes Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson, Noah Taylor, Kick Gurry, Dragomir Mrsic, Charlotte Riley, Jonas Armstrong, Franz Drameh, Masayoshi Haneda and Tony Way.

Liman directed ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ from a screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie and Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth, based on the novel entitled All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.  Erwin Stoff produced, along with Tom Lassally, Jeffrey Silver, Gregory Jacobs and Jason Hoffs.  The executive producers are Doug Liman, David Bartis, Joby Harold, Hidemi Fukuhara and Bruce Berman, with Tim Lewis and Kim Winther serving as co-producers.

Emily Blunt opposite Tom Cruise in sci-fi

MUMBAI: Actress Emily Blunt is in negotiations with Warner Bros to join the cast of All You Need is Kill, a sci-fi film opposite Tom Cruise.
The film follows the story of a soldier in a war against aliens who is forced to re-live his last day alive again and again after he is killed. Through having to re-live the same experiences he gets better at tackling the days challenges. Blunt would play another soldier who fights alongside him.

The production house was impressed with Blunt‘s tough girl credentials when she was cast as female lead in Man From U.N.C.L.E, the shooting of which was abruptly stopped after the studio couldn‘t find a male star and director Steven Soderbergh dropped out.
Blunt had earlier said that she was looking for a role in a sci-fi or superhero film where the female character had substance.
“I‘m open to any kind of genre if the part is great and fun and different and a challenge in some way. I would love to do a comic-book movie or a science fiction film that would scare the life out of me.”
‘All You Need is Kill‘ is produced by Erwin Stoff, Tom Lassally and Jason Hoffs. The script was originally written by Dante Harper and is being re-worked by Joby Harold, who is also executive producer.
