    Over Rs 330 crore spent on ads in first ten months of this year

    NEW DELHI: The Government spent around Rs 332.24 crore on advertising in the period between 1 January and 31 October this year.

    A sum of approximately Rs 288.67 crore was spent in the first ten months of this year on issuing display print media advertisements which usually carry the photographs of present and past political leaders/ministers/other dignitaries.

    In addition, approximately Rs 41.11 crore was spent on electronic media advertisements and about Rs 11.46 crore on outdoor publicity respectively on advertisements which carried the photographs of political leaders; Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari informed the Parliament.

    The Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) is the nodal agency of the Government of India for advertising by various Ministries and Organisations of Government of India including Public Sector Undertakings and Autonomous Bodies.

    Other newspapers cannot be forced to give names of rival newspapers or channels

    NEW DELHI: The Information and Broadcasting Ministry is of the view that Print and Electronic Media cannot be forced to take specific names of other newspapers and news channels they refer to in their news.

    This has been stated by the Ministry in a letter to social activist Nutan Thakur who had made certain representations in this regard in the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court.

    The Ministry said that Chairman of the Press Council is of the view that as per section 7 of the Press and Registration of Books Act 1867, the editor is the sole authority to decide the contents. Hence, it does not deem fit to lay rules making it mandatory to state the names of other newspapers being referred to and this decision shall be left to the Editor.
    As regards need to keep record of their newspapers for a definite period, the Ministry said under section 25(1) of the proposed Press and Registration of Books and Publications Bill, there is a provision to deliver a copy of the newspaper as and when demanded by the Press Registrar General.

    Journalists welfare fund extended to electronic, non-accredited media

    NEW DELHI: Even journalists not accredited to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), and electronic mediapersons, are now entitled of financial help under the Journalists Welfare Fund.

    This follows amendment of rules, which also included increasing the ex-gratia payment.

    According to Information and Broadcasting Ministry secretary Raghu Menon, an ex-gratia of Rs 500,000 would be paid to the family in the event of the demise of a mediaperson on duty, a maximum of Rs 300,000 would be given for treatment, and Rs 200,000 for injury.

    The scheme was formulated in 2001-02 and provided for payment of ex-gratia relief of Rs 100,000 to journalists or to their families in case of death, permanent disability or extreme hardship on account of the journalist’s death.

    The scheme has been extended with effect from 8 April to cover electronic mediapersons also.

    Upto Rs 500,000 would be provided to the family under extreme hardship on account of the journalist’s death or permanent disability, he said.

    MUMBAI: A Miami-based company Miflux has unveiled e-Album Germany ’06, an electronic album and interactive software internationally. This offers soccer fans a new way to keep track of the World Cup, which kicks off in Germany on 9 June 2006.

    e-Album Germany ’06 features tools that allow the users to interact and have fun with the World Cup before, during and after the tournament. It is designed for the users to collect and exchange information and images of the teams, players and venues, using the internet and e-mail.

    With this software, users can also perform a wide range of activities. These include entering scores to keep track of their favourite teams and speculating about results. They are also
    able to build their own scenarios and run soccer pools with their friends.

    e-Album Germany ’06 positions itself as an electronic equivalent of the old tradition of collecting and exchanging cards with friends.
