    Sultan…….Means Salman!

The name Sultan fits Salman like a T but the tag of underdog? When was the last time the actor essayed the role of an underdog? Sultan is about wrestling and romance where romance is the cause for wrestling as well as the cause to put an end to it.

Salman Khan has been the reigning superstar of Hindi cinema since his second film, Maine Pyar KIya, but neither he nor people around him took that status seriously as a result of which, nor did his fans. It is since Wanted (2009) that he has reasserted his status as the top draw which his flowing films consolidated. However, the films so far had Salman fighting others’ wars; for example, Ek Tha Tiger was about patriotism, Bajrangi Bhajan had Being Human as the theme. Sultan is purely personal story and cause for which the hero fights.

Salman is a waster and romps around his small town of Rewari in Haryana with boys much younger than him. If he is good at anything, it is chasing kites floating towards earth after having lost a dual of survival with another kite. His occupation as such is installing TV discs for his decent clients whose dirty minds extend only till Fashion TV and not porn! As would happen with such lads, he is his father’s main worry and grandmother’s apple of her eye! Salman while chasing a kite has his first encounter with Anushka Sharma and, for him, it is love at first sight. She has studied in Delhi, is a state level women’s wrestling champion and aspires to win an Olympic Gold someday. She finds Salman simple and a fun person and accepts his friendship. His dream is soon shattered when Anushka cuts him down to size making him realize that he did not amount to anything and she was only being friendly to him. As all such lads do, Salman decides to amount to something. Seems like in his town, where every second block houses an Akhada, wrestling is the only source or opportunity for a boy to amount to something. He joins one run by Anushka’s father. Thereafter, Salman’s strides are huge and soon is the champ. Now, Anushka is ready to accept him. While both, Salman and Anushka, are preparing to go to the Olympics, Anushka’s dream ends due to her pregnancy. Salman earns the Olympic medal but loses his head in the bargain. He behaves like a star, become arrogant and also misbehaves with people. While Salman is busy pocketing medals, Anushka delivers and loses her baby. The baby was anemic, needed blood of a very rare group which only Salman had. But, he was away, is blamed for baby’s death and Anushka decides to part ways with him. This is strange as Anushka herself is a sportsperson and would be expected to understand why Salman was away. Here onwards, the film tries to incorporate some commercial ingredients for the love story has lost its shine. Anushka has sulked permanently while Salman has a job and raises money to launch a blood bank in memory of his lost child. This is when Amit Sadh approaches him. He runs pro-fighting, a sort of free style, no holds barred fighting which has little to do with wrestling. However, Salman is talked into joining it. Randeep Hooda, a coach with a hangover of being an American coach shown in such boxing movies first refuses and then, seeing that Salman is the hero of the film, agrees to train him. After initial hurdles and taking some punches, Salman masters this fight genre. The last fight is tough so Anushka decides that Salman needs her support and breaks the ice.

Sultan is a routine story showing passable scripting. The film sags for a long while at places. Direction complies with the script offering no flash of genius. It is only Salman all the way because of whom, the weak aspects are overlooked by enthusiastic initial audience. The film has good music which blends with the subject. For popular appeal, it has a romantic number, Jag ghoomeya…. Dialogue penned for Salman is claptrap. Editing is slack. Cinematography is good. This a Salman film all the way and his very presence is the savior. He has only Anushka to share his burden with as rest of the cast consists of unfamiliar faces. With the Eid week- Salman combine striking once again, Sultan has drawn unprecedented advance booking in a long time. Having opened today (Wednesday) the film should cash in on the festive period till Sunday.

    Producer: Aditya Chopra.

    Director: Ali Abbas Zafar.

Cast: Salman Khan, Anushka Sharma, Amit Sadh, Randeep Hooda, Parikshat Sahni.

Atul Agnihotri mulls action film with bro-in-law Salman Khan

MUMBAI: Filmmaker-actor Atul Agnihotri, who along with his brother-in-law Salman Khan gave a stupendous hit in Bodyguard, is all set to again team up with the actor for his proposed upcoming film said to be an action film.

Said Atul in confirmation, “I am doing a movie with Salman. It is completely an original script…and not a remake. It is in a scripting stage and I am actively involved in the project.” “The work is under progress. It is difficult to talk more about it as we are still working on it,” he added.

Considering that most of Salman‘s films like Wanted, Dabangg, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2 have revolved around larger-than-life-action and were all blockbusters, the producer is also not shying away from taking the benefit of this genre.

If all goes well, Atul intends to begin work on this project from next year.

It may be remembered that Atul made his debut as a director with Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha made in 2004 that featured Salman Khan, Preity Zinta and Bhoomika Chawla. But the film didn‘t do well. Undeterred by this, he directed and even turned producer with Hello in 2008, a film based on the novel One Night at a Call Centre in which Salman had a cameo.

Atul returned to production with Salman-Kareena Kapoor starrer action-romantic film Bodyguard in 2011 that went on to become a huge hit at the box office.

Salman Khan is best admired star on social media

MUMBAI: Salman Khan beat Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan to become the most admired star on the social media.

Looks like with two back-to-back Rs 100 crore hits last year in Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2 and the unprecedented success of Bigg Boss 6, Khan has once again proved that he‘s the undisputed king of Bollywood, box office and the idiot box.

The Dabangg actor also won an award for the best use of social media at this year‘s Zee Cine Awards. A research conducted by Asterii Analytics said, “We used sophisticated web analysis tools to scan millions of pages on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, blogs and online forums to quantify the total volume of buzz and conversations on Bollywood stars.

A shortlist of 30 possible candidates was developed in the first phase. We developed 25 parameters to rank the candidates on the total volume of buzz. Using this four-phased process, we came to a single score and the top three candidates were Salman, Shahrukh and Bachchan. And Salman Khan emerged as the winner with a consistently high margin.”

Salman has 7,516,597 fans on Facebook and 3,266,882 followers on Twitter. Not just that, the actor has fan club pages on Facebook and Twitter with over 757,057 and 577,919 followers respectively.

  • Competition Appellate Tribunal issues notice to inquire into YRF deal on film releases

Competition Appellate Tribunal issues notice to inquire into YRF deal on film releases

MUMBAI: The Competition Appellate Tribunal has issued notice for enquiring into the anti-competitive activities of YRF blocking theatres for release of ‘Jab tak hai jaan‘ during Diwali while releasing ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ during Eid.

In a statement, Ajay Devgn Films said the Tribunal ‘has seen merit in our case‘.

The Competition Appellate Tribunal did not provide an interim relief, ADF said, “In view of YRF‘s own statement that only 821 theatres which have already executed agreement with it for showing Jab Tak Hai Jaan on Diwali in comparison to 1407 single screens for Ek Tha Tiger.”

This leaves the balance screens which have not executed agreements with YRF to show “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” till date to be free to exhibit “Son of Sardaar” without any tie in arrangement of YRF. This would include 586 single screens which had earlier shown “Ek Tha Tiger”.

The statement said, “Accordingly, we would now be approaching all theatres who have not executed any agreement for showing Jab Tak Hai Jaan for exhibiting our movie Son of Sardar. However, if the above facts are found to be false which would be proven through evidence after the release of the movie, we would not only continue to fight against YRF‘s anti-competitive activities on our own behalf but also on the behalf of the entire industry.”

The Competition Commission of India had on 6 November said there was no contravention of the Competition Act with regard to the agreement between Yash Raj Films and single screen exhibitors with regard to the film ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ starring Salman Khan.

The Commission had said the agreements entered into in July/August were not anti-competitive.

  • CCI upholds YRF’s deals with single screens

CCI upholds YRF’s deals with single screens

NEW DELHI: Ajay Devgn Films has received a setback with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) ruling that Yash Raj Films‘ (YRF) agreements with single screen exhibitors was not in contravention of the Competition Act.

The CCI said the agreements entered into in July/August by YRF with single screen theatres were not anti-competitive.

In its petition, Ajay Devgn Films had pointed out that during the release of Salman Khan-starrer ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ on 15 August, YRF and its distributors had taken an undertaking from single screen theatres that they would also exhibit the film ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan‘ by the same producer during Diwali.

Ajay Devgn Films alleged that it was laid down that any single screen theatre which did not agree to exhibiting ‘Jab Tak hai Jaan‘ would not get to screen ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘.

CCI was also informed that some single screen theatres did not agree to the YRF‘s condition.

The Commission said, “The act of booking theatres by a distributor for its two films simultaneously when the theatre owners have the liberty either to agree or not to agree, is not a restraint on the freedom of business of theatre owners. The theatre owners can wait for other films and can refuse to book their theatres simultaneously for two films. Even otherwise, the non significant position held by the single screen theatres does not cause any adverse effect on the competition.”

Furthermore under the Act, tie-in arrangements per se are not violating of section 3(4)(a) of the Act.

“If many high ticket mega starrer films compete with each other to be released only on the occasion of festivals, the choice lies with the theatres and each theatre is at liberty to book its theatre even in advance and it cannot be said that this had appreciable adverse effect on the market. The subject of appreciability is of huge practical importance for competition,” it added.

The Commission said according to its information, even single screen theatres in some of the states are further sub-divided in category A, category B and category C and the distributors discriminate between these categories and do not allow release of new films in category B or category C theatres and only choose category A theatres.

‘Thus the market of exhibition of new films on single screen theatres in the context of this case is not of enough significance to cause an appreciable adverse effect on the competition. Even otherwise, the market cannot be restricted to any particular period like Eid or Diwali and the market has to be considered a market available throughout the year.‘

Justice S N Dhingra and members H C Gupta, R Prasad, Geeta Gouri, Anurag Goel, and M L Tayal said Ajay Devgn Films did not place on record data either of market share or of economic strength to show how the opposite parties were dominant in the proposed relevant market on the basis of above stated guiding factors.

It was argued by the counsel for the informant that the opposite parties were dominant because Yash Raj Films was a big banner production house and had a big name and had given several blockbuster films.

But the Commission said, “No enterprise can be considered dominant on the basis of big name. Dominance has to be determined as per law on the basis of market share, economic strength and other relevant factors stated under Section19 (4) of the Act.”

The Commission said it was unable to accept ‘such a narrow approach‘ while determining the relevant market. A large number of movies are released in India every year. In Bollywood itself, 107 and 95 films were released in 2011 and 2012 (till now) respectively. Out of this, Yash Raj Films produced only two to four films each year. ‘This cannot be said to amount to dominance even in the Bollywood industry, leave aside film industry in India.‘ Therefore, the claim of Ajay Devgn Films that Yash Raj was a dominant player in the film industry in India cannot be accepted, it said.

Ajay Devgn Films had alleged that the YRF agreements were in violation of section 3 as well as section 4 of the Competition Act. It submitted that ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ was released at the time of Eid and ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan‘ is to be released at the time of Diwali.

‘This grievance of the informant arose because the informant feared that he would not get enough theatres for his own film ‘Son of Sardar‘ because of the agreement of single screen theatres with the opposite parties at the time of releasing Ek Tha Tiger. Ajay Devgn Films contended that the agreement between the opposite parties and the film exhibitors for exhibition of the two films together amounted to contravention of section 3(4)(a), 3(4)(b) and 3(4)(d) as well as contravention of section 4(2)(a).

Salman Khan tops as highest taxpayer among film celebs

MUMBAI: It‘s heartening to note that Salman Khan, whose films have been grossing Rs 100 crore plus capped by his latest blockbuster Ek Tha Tiger has emerged as the highest taxpayer in Bollywood, forking out Rs 8 crore for the September quarter.

The 46-year old Salman trumped all his peers and rivals in the tinsel town paying Rs 8 crore in advance tax in July-September quarter this year as compared to Rs. 5 crore in the same period a year ago.

Khan‘s romantic-action-thriller Ek Tha Tiger has clocked approximately Rs 198 crore at the box office. He has also starred in other Rs 100 crore films like Dabangg, Ready and Bodyguard.

Following him was Akshay Kumar, who paid Rs 7.5 crore advance tax in comparison to Rs 5 crore he had paid last year during the same period. Following them way behind was Shah Rukh Khan, who has not had any big release this year as yet. His tax outgo was flat at Rs 5 crore.

Among the other Khans, Aamir paid Rs 3.25 crore as against Rs 4.50 crore last year. Saif Ali Khan, whose films Agent Vinod and Cocktail got mixed responses at the box office, paid a tax of Rs 3 crore compared to Rs 1.7 crore in the year ago period.

Incidentally, Amitabh Bachchan paid Rs 5 crore against the Rs 1.4 crore last year.

  • Ek Tha Tiger continues to rule box office, nets Rs 1.75 bn in 12 days

Ek Tha Tiger continues to rule box office, nets Rs 1.75 bn in 12 days

MUMBAI: Ek Tha Tiger went on to become a new legend on the Hindi film box office, a fairytale for its makers as it scaled new heights.

The film showed more action at the box office than the screen itself in its rollercoaster ride which began with Rs 329.3 million on Wednesday, 15 August. Its box office collections dropped over 60 per cent on the following days before it made the most of the weekend and the Eid and Basi Eid festive days.

The film, which had registered the fastest Rs 1 billion after its extended weekend, closed its first week (nine days) with a whopping Rs 1.54 billion, all from multiple shows at 3,300 screens thereby exhausting most of its audience.

The film added just Rs 207.4 million more in its second weekend, taking its 12 day tally to Rs 1.75 billion.

The concept of overflow, which was a routine thing till before multiplexes and the concept of film release in hundreds of screens happened, occurred this time around. The houseful shows of Ek Tha Tiger disappointed many and some of them decided to take in Gangs Of Wasseypur instead rather than return watching nothing. Thus, the overflow audience helped Gangs Of Wasseypur get better collection than it would have in its second week as it netted Rs 27.5 million and took its total to Rs 214.5 million.

Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi failed to get a decent opening due to its face value and then to improve over the weekend with poor word of mouth. The film ended its opening weekend with around Rs 63 million.

Jism2 is almost through at the box office adding a symbolic Rs 6.5 million in its third week to gross a total of Rs 357 million.

Kya Super Kool Hai Hum collected Rs two million in its fourth week taking its total collection to Rs 460.6 million.
