Salman Khan defies Eid release with Dabaang 2 releasing during Christmas this year

MUMBAI: Since the last couple of years, Salman Khan‘s films have been releasing around Eid. The exercise started with Wanted (2010), Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011) Bodyguard (2011) and the latest Ek Tha Tiger.

But not any more. His next Dabangg 2 is set for a Christmas release. It may be remembered that 23 years ago his first-ever blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya released on 29 December, 1989. Dabangg 2 is set to hit theatres on 21 December.

It is said that Salman consciously decided to break the myth surrounding his Eid superstition. He believes that the content of Dabangg 2 is even better than that of the original, hence this is a play to defy the Eid release myth.

Said producer Arbaaz Khan in a statement, "There are four-five vital release periods in a year, which are important for any big film. Since our film will be ready by the year-end, we decided to release it during the Christmas period."

The sequel while retaining its lead pair Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha, has replaced Sonu Sood with Prakash Raj as the baddie chief.

The original was directed by Abhinav Kashyap, and was a big turning point in Salman‘s box-office fortune. Actor-turned-producer Arbaaz Khan has now taken the director‘s seat.

Salman’s Sher Khan to release in Eid next year

MUMBAI: Not to give up his claim of a release during the time of Eid, Salman Khan has finalised that his brother Sohail Khan‘s upcoming film Sher Khan would release in Eid 2013.

A few days ago, there were reports that Akshay Kumar‘s Once Upon A Time In Mumbai 2 would be the only 2013 Eid release. This means that Salman Khan would lock horns with Akshay Kumar during the Muslim festive time next year.

Said director Sohail Khan, “I start shooting Sher Khan from January 2013 next and I start casting and finalising locations from next month. It‘s God‘s decree, After Tiger, Bhai is destined to play Sher. We‘re going ahead with the release of Sher Khan during Eid 2013.”

The project would be different from Dabangg and Ek Tha Tiger and will have more special effects than stunts. Said an insider that more than Salman‘s stunts there will be lots of special-effects in the film. And that‘s why Sher Khan would take longer than usual in the post-production.”

But Khan is very clear on this. Sher Khan would have to be ready for Eid, come what may,” the source added.

As per reports Angela Johnson and Priyanka Chopra are in talks for the film.

With a huge cast comprising Akshay Kumar, Imran Khan, Sonakshi Sinha and Sonali Bendre, the Milan Luthria-directed film, produced by Balaji Motion , is expected to release in 2500 plus screens nationwide.

And while a survey touted the sequel to be among the most anticipated sequel, the makers have decided on the film‘s nationwide release on Eid given its enormous stature and scale. Interestingly, the film‘s four leads play Muslim characters in the film.

Observes Milan Luthria, “The film-going public can celebrate this festival next year with the unexpected combo of Akshay Kumar and Imran Khan who are terrific together, along with Sonakshi Sinha and Sonali Bendre, all of whom are playing flamboyant Muslim characters. We‘ve already recorded a brilliant Sufi qawwali and there‘s lots more…. mainly…. Entertainment… Entertainment… and Entertainment!‘

  • Ek Tha Tiger continues to rule box office, nets Rs 1.75 bn in 12 days

Ek Tha Tiger continues to rule box office, nets Rs 1.75 bn in 12 days

MUMBAI: Ek Tha Tiger went on to become a new legend on the Hindi film box office, a fairytale for its makers as it scaled new heights.

The film showed more action at the box office than the screen itself in its rollercoaster ride which began with Rs 329.3 million on Wednesday, 15 August. Its box office collections dropped over 60 per cent on the following days before it made the most of the weekend and the Eid and Basi Eid festive days.

The film, which had registered the fastest Rs 1 billion after its extended weekend, closed its first week (nine days) with a whopping Rs 1.54 billion, all from multiple shows at 3,300 screens thereby exhausting most of its audience.

The film added just Rs 207.4 million more in its second weekend, taking its 12 day tally to Rs 1.75 billion.

The concept of overflow, which was a routine thing till before multiplexes and the concept of film release in hundreds of screens happened, occurred this time around. The houseful shows of Ek Tha Tiger disappointed many and some of them decided to take in Gangs Of Wasseypur instead rather than return watching nothing. Thus, the overflow audience helped Gangs Of Wasseypur get better collection than it would have in its second week as it netted Rs 27.5 million and took its total to Rs 214.5 million.

Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi failed to get a decent opening due to its face value and then to improve over the weekend with poor word of mouth. The film ended its opening weekend with around Rs 63 million.

Jism2 is almost through at the box office adding a symbolic Rs 6.5 million in its third week to gross a total of Rs 357 million.

Kya Super Kool Hai Hum collected Rs two million in its fourth week taking its total collection to Rs 460.6 million.
