  • Guest Column: Life’s biggest stand-out success lesson

A ship is safe in the harbour. But, that is not what ships are built for: John A Shedd. Why does stand-out success elude the early achievers from making it finally in the game of life. Did they learn this ONE thing!

Think of that brightest one in your class back in school or college. Did they change the world or achieve extraordinary success?

Umpteen number of studies from time to time throw up statistics to show that achievers of the highest grades in schools and colleges as a ratio of proportion of overall extraordinary achievers almost always is weighed in favour of those who did not have those fancy grades and did not walk away with a gold medal at the passing out graduation ceremonies.

In his new book “Barking Up the Wrong Tree,” Eric Barker explores the maxims we use to discuss success. He finds that just as nice guys don’t always finish last, valedictorians rarely become stand-out successes.

Not to be misled – by standards of ordinary success, they do well and find good lives but they do NOT achieve extraordinary success to become billionaires who change the world.

    Barker writes:
There was little debate that high school success predicted college success. Nearly 90 per cent are now in professional careers with 40 percent in the highest tier jobs. They are reliable, consistent and well-adjusted, and by all measures the majority have good lives.

But how many of these number-one high school performers go on to change the world, run the world or impress the world?

The answer seems to be clear: zero
Many academically brightest are acknowledged (even by themselves) to be as not the smartest students in their class but simply the hardest workers. Smartness is restricted to delivering against a teacher expectation rather than true ‘imbibing’ of the knowledge.

In fact, research demonstrates that students who truly enjoy learning the most often struggle in school, trying to trade off attention given to subjects about which they’re truly passionate with the demands of their other distractions (read coursework). While intellectual students struggle with this tension, grade achievers excel.

The most valued traits in school are self-discipline, conscientiousness and the ability to comply with rules. The ability to disrupt the world or make extraordinary breakthroughs however requires NOT these traits.

The education system thrives on and rewards (remember the class monitor/rep) developing ‘promising ones’ with a positive trait of ‘trying to please everyone’. It is also the key to failure.

I can’t give you a sure-fire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time — Herbert Bayard Swope.

The high-grade achievers make it their business to be the best. ‘Best’ in real life is a label. It’s something someone decides for you – the ‘educational institution’ in case of students. ‘Better’ is more personal which pushes you to embrace ‘highs and lows’ to find that unique attribute called ‘individuality’ as the key to success while the graduation ceremony sees hundreds of them in identical caps and gowns.

While the schools produce the best and the brightest to go and change the world, the achievers forget to unlearn to challenge notions and embrace uncertainty. The one thing that stands out is the inability of these ‘brightlings’ to encounter and treat real life’s chaos as a part of the deal.

The ability to ‘shake things up’ is not a particularly well appreciated quality taught in schools.

That one thing that keeps these ‘lives of promise’ from making it as truly THE ONE therefore is

Unlearning is as important at all points in life as learning.

Anyone whose goal is ‘something higher’ must expect someday to suffer vertigo. What is vertigo? Fear of falling? No, Vertigo is something other than fear of falling. It is the voice of the emptiness below us which tempts and lures us, it is the desire to fall, against which, terrified, we defend ourselves  ― Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being

Education system mostly is akin to a ‘control experiment’ in science. Lots of mediocre students thrive outside a ‘controlled’ scholastic environment.

In the school, rules rule life.  In the messy game called life, Chaos rules everything!  Unlearn and embrace it for your success.

  • Virtual screens to start replacing TVs & theaters in a year, consumers expect: Ericsson

MUMBAI: Ericsson ConsumerLab has reported that seven out of 10 consumers believe that virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) will become mainstream in media, education, work, social interaction, tourism and retail. Consumers expect virtual screens to start replacing televisions and theaters in less than a year.

For VR and AR to merge with physical reality and become mainstream, 5G is crucial to provide mobility, improve social experiences and address nausea concerns.

Ericsson has published its latest ConsumerLab report – Merged Reality – revealing insights into how consumers expect virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to merge with physical reality, and that 5G will be a key technology for such experiences to become mainstream. The report reveals that when boundaries between people’s perception of physical and virtual reality start to blur, this could result in a drastic impact on lives and society. The way we live, work, and consume information and media will fundamentally change.

Realities will not merge if the user is tethered to a computer or cut off from physical reality. Early adopters of VR/AR expect next-generation networks like 5G to play a central role. Thirty-six per cent have expectations on 5G to provide VR/AR mobility through a stable, fast and high-bandwidth network. Thirty per cent of early adopters also expect 5G to enable tethered headsets to become wireless.

Key findings of the latest report include that seven out of 10 early adopters expect VR/AR to change everyday life fundamentally in six domains: media, education, work, social interaction, travel and retail. Media is already being transformed and consumers expect virtual screens to start replacing televisions and theaters in less than a year.

The qualitative research in the report included an innovative focus group discussion series completely in VR with participants from North America and Europe, as well as traditional focus groups with current users of VR from Japan and South Korea. A series of qualitative VR tests with 20 Ericsson employees were also done to understand how lag in VR can trigger nausea.

In the quantitative part of the study, the report presents insights from a survey of 9,200 consumers in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Spain, the UK and the US, aged between 15-69 with awareness of the concept of VR.

ASCI upholds complaints against 79 out of 100 ads in September

MUMBAI: In September 2014, Advertising Standards Council of India’s (ASCI) Consumer Complaints Council (CCC) upheld complaints against 79 out of 100 advertisements.

Out of the 79 advertisements against which complaints were upheld, 49 belonged to personal and healthcare category, followed by the education category with 18 advertisements.

In the personal and healthcare category, the CCC found the claims in advertisements of 48 advertisers to be either misleading or false or not adequately/scientifically substantiated and hence, violating ASCI’s code. Some of the health care products or services advertisements also contravened provisions of the Drug & Magic Remedies Act and Chapter 1.1 and III.4 of the ASCI code.

Complaints were upheld against advertisers like Vini Cosmetics’ advertisement of White Tone Face Powder that shows instant fairness of the skin on using the product which is misleading by exaggeration. The advertisement of Perfect Clinic claims to give hope for childless couples, helps to get sex life back and enjoy married life.

Agro Tech Foods’ advertisement of Sundrop Heart claims that research conducted on consumers proves the product has worked in 100 per cent of the people tested on. The duration of the supers in the advertisement does not stay for 6 seconds and contravened ASCI’s guidelines for supers.

The advertisement of Richfeel Trichology Centre claims to provide the Best Hair Transplant at Rs 55,000. It further claims to have “Full time Aliesbury Certified Surgeons and staff perform the procedure”.

In the education category, complaints were upheld against 18 advertisements. For instance, the advertisement claims that RKDF College of Engineering is the best engineering college in Central India. Sri Venkateswara Institute Of Technology claims that it provides guaranteed placement or else refund of fees.

In the other categories, Hindustan Unilever Ltd advertisement claims that “various powders were tested, and in machines, Surf Excel Matic provided the most effective cleanliness”, qualified with a disclaimer “based on lab test on select fabrics versus ordinary powders” is misleading as the comparison is made versus ordinary powders not meant for machine wash. The subject matter of comparison was not considered as a like to like comparison.

Star India’s TVC promo of Gumraah season 3 presents criminality and directly or indirectly encourages people – particularly minors- to emulate it or conveys the modus operandi of any crime.

In the Food & Beverages category, Red Bull India advertisement without justifiable reason shows dangerous practices and manifests a disregard for safety. Similarly, Bacardi India is promoting its liquor product – Bacardi Breezer through the radio advertisement. The advertiser had violated the brand extension advertising code. The radio spot contravened Chapter III.6 (a) (b) of the ASCI Code and the guidelines for brand extension products or services.

  • Naseeruddin Shah urges to change views about disabled and disability in DD series

Naseeruddin Shah urges to change views about disabled and disability in DD series

NEW DELHI: Renowned actor Naseeruddin Shah has strongly supported the telecast of a series on visually impaired and blind achievers on Doordarshan saying “people need to break away from the societal stereotypes and commonly held perceptions about disability and success or happiness.”

The actor, who acted as a blind school principal in the Sai Paranjpye-directed film Sparsh and is presenting the series Nazar ya Nazariya on Doordarshan, said, “India has over 63 million visually impaired people, of which around eight million are completely blind. Most of these people are often marginalised, not given equal opportunities for education, career and employment; they are also ill informed, and not stimulated to explore their potential. The blind and visually impaired community is often viewed as liabilities as opposed to potential human resource for a developing country.”

“This is the main message we are trying to drive through this television series and we hope that we are able to achieve this goal by reaching out to more and more people of this country.”

Commenting on his association, Shah said, “When I did Sparsh in the early 1980s, I had the opportunity of interacting with several visually impaired individuals. I realised that the problem is not with the Nazar it is with the Nazariya.”

Doordarshan has been airing the special series on real-life visually impaired and blind achievers in India across various fields in the programme which is telecast every Saturday at 9.30 am.

Each episode of the television series features real-life stories of blind and visually impaired achievers while addressing diverse themes throughout the course of the 13-part series. The themes will range from education, employment, business, art and culture to marriage and relationships.
