    BBC World News unveils plans to help global audiences

    MUMBAI: As the United Kingdom looks towards the EU Referendum, the BBC has today unveiled its plans to help global audiences make sense of the vote.

    From documentaries and debates to live streaming on social media, BBC World News and BBC.com/news will provide a multiplatform offer, which means people around the world can keep up with the latest on the campaign wherever they are.

    The BBC’s international news service will be mobilising its team of experienced correspondents and presenters with live broadcasts from across Europe to explain key moments in the campaign and help people understand what the result could mean where they are, while also offering a wealth of content online at bbc.com/eureferendum (www.bbc.com/news/politics/eu_referendum)
    Sharing content and analysis via Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter will be at the heart of the coverage as Outside Source presenter Ros Atkins takes his innovative daily news show on the road. He will be presenting his TV programme from Paris, Manchester and Edinburgh as well as live steaming on the BBC News Facebook page. He will also be covering the BBC’s live, televised EU membership debate at London’s SSE Arena, Wembley on Tuesday June 21st. Ros will use social media to bring viewers key points as senior politicians and other key figures explore both sides of the argument, while BBC World News will broadcast the debate live.

    On results day Ros will be joined by World News presenter and former BBC political correspondent Philippa Thomas in London’s Westminster as they cover the reaction to the referendum’s outcome in a special day of live broadcasts. Presenters David Eades and Karin Giannone will be bringing the view from Brussels, and Kasia Madera will be in Poland. BBC World News America anchor Katty Kay will be keeping American audiences up to speed, with a special London edition of her show while business correspondents Karishma Vaswani and Michelle Fleury will gauge the reaction of the financial markets and business communities around the world.

    Alongside the service’s news reporting BBC World News will also be broadcasting special documentaries. These include an Our World special with Gabriel Gatehouse considering what has become of the European dream and an hour long film ‘The Truth About EU Migration’ (title TBC) presented by Mishal Husain taking an impartial look at the effects of migration from other European Union countries to the UK.

    Unveiling the wealth of content, BBC World News digital and editorial director Richard Porter said, “This is a historic referendum for the British people, which we know is being watched closely around the world. It’s our responsibility to ensure audiences get the clearest explanation of the issues, with coverage they can trust.     Indian Film funded by Hubert Bals in Venice Film Festival

    NEW DELHI:  Chaitanya Tamhane’s Court has been selected for the 71st Venice Film Festival. The multilingual movie will be screened in the Horizons (Orizonti) section of the festival, which runs from August 27 to September 6.

     

    The film based on the exploration of the Indian judiciary, had received the Hubert Bals fund for script and project development in 2012 and was part of Film Bazaar co-production market of the National Film Development Corporation in 2012.

     

    Tamhane, an English literature graduate, has previously directed short film Six Strands, which was screened at international film festivals like Roterdam, Clermont-Ferand, Edinburgh, and Slamdance.

     

    Bengali film Labour of Love will be screened in Venice Days, a sidebar of the Venice Film Festival.

    International co-production by Lebanese filmmaker gets top award at Edinburgh

    NEW DELHI: Mahdi Fleifel‘s A world not ours (Lebanon/UAE/Denmark/UK) has received the best film award in the International Competition of the 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival.

    The film had its British premiere at this year‘s festival. The award is given to filmmakers from outside United Kingdom in recognition of their imagination and innovation. Acclaimed South Korean director Bong Joon-ho chaired the international feature film competition jury, which also included actress Natalie Dormer and film critic Siobhan Synnot.

    The award ceremony concluded the twelve-day festival, and the ceremony was hosted by Grant Lauchlan, producer and presenter of stv‘s Moviejuice. 

    The jury also gave a special mention to Elias Giannakakis‘ Joy (Greece) and appreciated the outstanding performance by Amalia Moutousi.

    The Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film went to Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel‘s Leviathan (UK/USA/France), which received its UK premiere at the festival. A visually stunning documentary, it wins one of the longest-running film awards in the UK, honouring imagination and creativity in British filmmaking.

    The winner was chosen by the Michael Powell Jury, chaired by eminent Iranian director Samira Makhmalbaf and including actor and director Kevin McKidd and renowned film critic Derek Malcolm.

    The jury awarded a special commendation to Paul Wright‘s For Those In Peril for its passionate portrayal of a young Scots survivor of a tragedy at sea.

    The Award for Best Performance in a British Feature Film was shared by Jamie Blackley and Toby Regbo for their performances as the dysfunctional schoolboys in uwantme2killhim? The performance awards were voted for by the Michael Powell Award Competition Jury.

    Reinstated in 2013 after a two-year absence, The Audience Award, supported by Sainsbury‘s Bank, went to Fire In The Night (UK) directed by Anthony Wonke for his deeply moving documentary detailing the 1988 Piper Alpha disaster in the North Sea. The film, which received its world premiere at the festival, skillfully combines archival footage, audio recordings and interviews with some of the 61 survivors of the disaster, some of whom are interviewed for the very first time.

    GHL by Lotte Schreiber won the Award for Best Short Film in the shorts category. The prize was one of the three awards bestowed by the short film competition jury, which included International Film Festival Rotterdam programmer Inge de Leeuw (chair), film critic Christoph Huber and independent film programmer Ricardo Matos Cabo.

    The award for creative innovation in a short film, given for the first time this year, was awarded to Doll Parts by Muzi Quawson, as voted for by the Shorts Jury.

    Another newly introduced award within the shorts category, The Award for Outstanding Individual Contribution to a Short Film, which celebrates imaginative and innovative work in short cinema, was awarded to Josh Gibson as Director of Photography of Light Plate, which he also directed.

    The jury also gave a special mention to three filmmakers whose work holds great promise for the future: Charlotte Rabate for Lucille In the Sky; Ivan Castineiras for The Border; and Anna Frances Ewert for Endless Day.

    As voted for by the audience, The McLaren Award for Best New British Animation, supported by the British Council, went to Marilyn Myller by director Mikey Please and co-animator Dan Ojari. Named after Scottish-born filmmaker Norman McLaren, the McLaren Award is the longest running award celebrating creativity amongst UK animation talent. The award was presented by Richard Williams, widely regarded as one of the world‘s greatest animators.

    The Student Critics Jury Award, supported by Morag and James Anderson, was awarded to Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari by Alexey Fedorchenko. The award was determined by a jury of seven aspiring film critics, Lewis Camley, Ruth Swift-Wood, Kathryn Craigmyle, Phil Kennedy, Catarina Mourao, Rebecca Lily Bowen and Vivek Santayana, who took part in a workshop on film criticism at EIFF under the guidance of Kate Taylor (Independent Cinema Office), Gabe Klinger (independent film critic and programmer) and Nick James (editor, Sight & Sound).

    Discovery expands content offering on Google Earth

    MUMBAI: US media firm Discovery Communications has expanded its expansion of its collection of world-class content on Google Earth.

    It has added over 150 video segments for destinations around the globe. A pilot partner for Google Earth’s new showcase of multimedia overlays, the Discovery Networks World Tour; can be accessed through the Featured Content checkbox in the Google Earth sidebar. This expansion follows the April announcement of Discovery being the first provider to bring video content to Google Earth.

    Google Earth is a satellite imagery-based mapping product that combines 3D buildings and terrain with mapping capability and Google search. Over the past year, there have been more than 10 million unique Google Earth downloads from around the world.

    Discovery senior executive VP for strategy and development Don Baer, says, “As promised, Discovery has continued to populate the world with engaging video to help Google Earth users explore the wonders of our planet. Discovery is dedicated to growing its showcase on Google Earth, giving virtual globetrekkers a journey of infinite proportions.”

    The initial collection included companion video for 10 of America’s most popular national parks,including Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore and Dinosaur National Park. Drawing from its rich stable of programming and to enhance viewers’ experience with its TV brands, Discovery has expanded the offering to include 48 world landmarks, national parks, American and European cities, and African location.

    Google Earth users will find videos on everything from the design process used to create the face of George Washington on Mount Rushmore and how to make authentic Belgian chocolate, to the history of China’s Terra Cotta soldiers and why fire is one of the most important natural forces in Yellowstone Park’s ecosystem.

    Users can access the video elements by clicking on Discovery’s globe icon, shown at destination sites where Discovery video content is available. An interactive broadband player hosted by Discovery launches into a selection of rich and compelling two- to four-minute videos. Destinations include the following:
