    Reliance Jio adds 27.9 mn subs in Q3; GigaFiber marks entry in 1400 cities

    BENGALURU: Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani’s juggernaut Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) reported 50.7 percent growth in gross revenue for the quarter ended 31 December 2018 (Q3 2019, quarter or period under review) as compared to the corresponding year ago quarter. The company’s operating result was 25.4 percent higher during the quarter under review as compared to the year ago quarter. Organised retail under Reliance Retail Ltd and Digital Services segment under Jio have been adding a larger and larger share to the company’s topline and operating results over time. 

    Q3-2019 was no different. Revenue for RIL’s Reliance Retail almost doubled (grew 89.3 percent) y-o-y in Q3 2019 to Rs 35,577 crore (16.7 percent of gross revenue) as compared to Rs 18,798 crore (13.3 percent of gross revenue) in Q3 2018. The segment’s operating result grew 210.5 percent y-o-y to Rs 1,512 crore (0.71 percent of gross revenue) during the period under review from Rs 487 crore (0.34 percent of gross revenue). The segment’s contribution to operating results grew to 8.7 percent in Q3 2019 from 3.5 percent in Q3 2018.

    RIL’s digital segment revenue in Q3 2019 grew 51.2 percent y-o-y to Rs 12,302 crore (5.8 percent of gross revenue) from Rs 8,136 crore (5.8 percent of gross revenue). Operating results for the digital segment grew 64 percent y-o-y to Rs 2,362 crore (1.1 percent of gross revenue) in Q3 2019 from Rs 1,440 crore. (1 percent of gross revenue). The segment’s contribution to operating results grew to 13.6 percent in Q3 2019 from 10.4 percent in Q3 2018.

    RIL reported gross revenue of Rs 2,12,752 crore for Q3 2019 as compared to Rs 1,41,182 crore for the corresponding year ago quarter. Operating result for the period under review was Rs 17,341 crore as compared to Rs 13,830 crore for Q3 2018. The company reported profit for the period as Rs 10,376 crore which was 10 percent higher as compared to Rs 9,437 crore in Q3 2018. Total Comprehensive income for Q3 2019 was 28.8 percent higher y-o-y at Rs 11,052 crore as compared to Rs 8,582 crore.

    FTTH JioGigaFiber services, Den Networks and Hathway Cable & Datacom Investments

    In its earnings release, RIL said that JioGigaFiber services for home broadband, entertainment, smart home solutions, wireline and enterprise has witnessed overwhelming customer interest across 1,400 cities. Trial services are being rolled out across several cities to optimise service offerings.

    The company said that Jio’s customer engagement stayed healthy with average data consumption per user per month of 10.8 GB and average voice consumption of 794 minutes per user per month. Video consumption drove most of the usage, increasing to 460 crore hours per month.

    RIL said further that it awaits regulatory approvals to complete the recently announced investment in Den Networks Ltd and Hathway Cable and Datacom Ltd. Post completion of the transaction, Reliance and Jio will be strengthening the business model of 27,000 LCOs that are aligned with DEN and Hathway across 750 cities, by creating multiple future opportunities with new services and platforms.

    RIL says that Jio added 2.79 crore subscribers in Q3 2019 and its net subscriber base grew to 28 crore. The company says that Jio has had the lowest monthly churn in the industry of 0.61 percent during the quarter. Jio’s ARPU for Q3 2019 was Rs 130 as compared to Rs 131.70 in the immediate trailing quarter.

    TV18 boosts Network18 numbers for third quarter

    BENGALURU: Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani’s media arm, Network18 reported improved numbers for the quarter ended 31 December 2018 (Q3 2019, quarter under review) as compared to the corresponding year ago quarter Q3 2018). The company reported 13 percent y-o-y growth in consolidated revenue for Q3 2019 at Rs 1,475 crore as compared to Rs 1,267 crore in Q3 2018. Network18 reported profit after taxes of Rs 138 crore for Q3 2018. Consolidated operating EBITA increased 18 percent y-o-y to Rs 88 crore in Q3 2019 from Rs 75 crore in Q3 2018.

    Network18’s numbers comprise of numbers from its publically listed subsidiary TV 18 Broadcast Limited (TV18) and from NW18 Web digital, print and others.

    TV 18 props Network 18 numbers

    TV 18 consolidated revenue of Rs 1,474 crore in Q3 2019 was 22 per cent higher y-o-y than Rs 1,211 crore in Q3 2018. TV 18 consolidated operating EBIDTA for Q3 2019 increased 41 percent y-o-y to Rs 115 crore from Rs 82 crore in Q3 2018

    Revenue growth in Q3 2019 was across all revenue streams. The company’s operating revenue from Business and General news (TV 18 standalone) increased 16 per cent y-o-y to Rs 290 crore from Rs 251 crore. The segment’s operating EBIDTA more than doubled (increased 130 percent) y-o-y in Q3 2019 to Rs 47 crore from Rs 20 crore.

    National News (Business and General) revenue increased 12 percent in Q3 2019 y-o-y to Rs 220 crore from Rs 196 crore. National News (Business and General)  operating EBITDA increased 13 percent y-o-y to 56 crore from Rs 49 crore. National News. Regional News ex-Lokmat operating revenue during the quarter under review increased 27 percent y-o-y to Rs 70 crore from Rs 55 crore. The segment reported a substantially lower loss of Rs 9 crore for Q3 2019 as compared to Rs 29 crore for Q3 2018.The Entertainment segment (Viacom 18, AETN18 and Indiacast) saw a 23 percent y-o-y increase in revenue to Rs 1,185 crore in Q3 2019 from Rs 960 crore.  Operating profit of the Entertainment segment increased 11 percent y-o-y to Rs 68 core from Rs 61 core.

    NW18 Web digital, print and others numbers continue decline

    In Q2 2018, NW18 Web digital, print and others (NW18) revenue declined. The decline continued with a  13 per cent y-o-y fall in Q3 2019 to Rs 49 crore from Rs 56 crore in Q3 2018. NW18 operating EBIDTA was higher loss of Rs 27 crore as compared to a loss of Rs 7 crore in Q3 2018.

    Ortel loss mounts: NCLT orders insolvency process

    BENGALURU: Ortel Communications Ltd (Ortel) reported a higher loss for the quarter ended 30 September 2018 (Q2 2019, period or quarter under review) as compared to the immediate trailing quarter Q1 2019 and the corresponding year ago quarter Q2 2018. On 27 November 2018, the National Company Law Tribunal, New Delhi (NCLT) passed an order for commencement of corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP) based on an application filed by Sony Pictures Network India (SPN) which is an operational creditor of Ortel. The results for Q2 2019 pertain to the period before the CIRP.

    Ortel’s net loss after taxes for Q2 2019 more than tripled y-o-y to Rs 17.62 crore as compared to Rs 5.75 crore in Q2 2018. The company had reported loss after tax of Rs 13.48 crore for the immediate trailing quarter. Operating loss (negative EBITDA) for the period under review was Rs 3.39 crore as compared to an operating profit of Rs 12.25 crore in Q2 2018 and an operating profit of Rs 0.21 crore in Q1 2019.

    Oretl’s revenue from operations in Q2 2019 declined 34 per cent y-o-y to Rs 31.56 crore as compared to Rs 47.83 crore in Q2 2018, but was fractionally higher by 0.7 per cent q-o-q as compared to Rs 31.35 crore in Q1 2019. Total Income in Q2 2019 declined 33.4 per cent y-o-y to Rs 32.29 crore as compared to Rs 48.51 crore in Q2 2018, but was 1.8 per cent higher q-o-q than Rs 31.71 crore.

    Segment numbers

    Four segments contribute to Ortel’s revenue. They are cable TV, be, infrastructure leasing and others. Revenues from cable TV, broadband and infrastructure leasing segments declined in Q2 2019 as compared to Q2 2018.

    Ortel’s Cable TV segment’s revenue declined 32 per cent in the quarter under review to Rs 25.67 crore from Rs 37.73 crore. The segment reported an operating profit of Rs 6.03 crore in Q2 2019 as compared to an operating profit of Rs 12.16 crore in Q2 2018.

    Broadband segment’s revenue declined 44.7 per cent in Q2 2019 to Rs 3.31 crore from Rs 5.99 crore in Q2 2018. The segment’s operating profit declined to less than a fourth (declined 76.3 per cent) in Q2 2019 to Rs 0.32 crore as compared to Rs 1.34 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal.

    Ortel’s infrastructure and leasing segment had operating revenue of Rs 1.77 crore in Q2 2019 which was 47.4 percent lower than the Rs 3.36 crore in Q2 2018. The segment’s operating profit declined 41.8 per cent in Q2 2019 to Rs 1.48 crore from Rs 2.54 crore in Q2 2018.

    The numbers for Ortel’s ‘Others’ segment are small and have not been considered in this report.

    Let us look at the other numbers reported by Ortel

    Ortel’s total expenditure in Q2 2019 declined 18.1 per cent to Rs 49.91 crore from Rs 50.53 crore in Q2 2018. Programming costs reduced 18.1 per cent in Q2 2019 to Rs 9.11 crore from Rs 11.12 crore in Q2 2018. Bandwidth costs in the quarter under review reduced 24.8 per cent to Rs 3.27 crore from Rs 4.35 crore. Finance costs in Q2 2019 reduced 6.7 per cent to Rs 6.8 crore from Rs 7.29 crore in Q2 2018. Employee benefits expense in Q2 2019 declined 9.7 per cent to Rs 4.63 crore from Rs 5.13 crore in Q2 2018. Other expenses in the quarter under review increased 19.7 per cent to Rs 17.94 crore as compared to Rs 14.98 crore in Q2 2018.

    Balaji Telefilms reports higher programming hours and better realisation

    BENGALURU: The Ektaa Kapoor-led Balaji Telefilms Ltd reported a consolidated profit from continuing operations of Rs 7.1 crore for the quarter ended 30 September 2018 (Q2 2019, quarter or period under review) as compared to a loss of Rs 22 crore for Q2 2018 and a loss of Rs 0.6 crore in the immediate trailing quarter. The company reported 13 percent higher quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) television content production hours or (commissioned programs segment) and a 17 percent improvement in realisation per hour for the period under review as compared to the immediate trailing quarter Q1 2019. The company produced 193 hours of commissioned television content in Q2 2019 as compared to 170.5 hours in Q1 2019. The company had produced 240 hours of commissioned television content in Q1 2018.

    Balaji Telefilms said that realisation per hour of commissioned television content during the quarter under review was almost Rs 0.4 crore as compared to about Rs 0.34 crore in Q1 2019 and Rs 0.32 crore in Q2 2018.

    Segment numbers

    The company has three segments – commissioned programs, films and digital.

    Revenue from the commissioned programs segment increased 7.4 percent y-o-y to Rs 88.41 crore during the quarter under review from Rs 82.31 crore in Q2 2018 and 26.3 percent q-o-q from Rs 70.01 crore in the immediate trailing quarter. Operating profit from the commissioned programs segment was Rs 13.25 crore in Q2 2019 as compared to Rs 10.53 crore in Q2 2018 and an operating loss of Rs 2.10 crore in Q1 2019.

    Revenue from Balaji Telefilms' films segment in Q2 2019 reduced 17 percent y-o-y to Rs 25.33 crore from Rs 30.76 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter and reduced 62.5 percent q-o-q from Rs 68.04 crore in Q1 2019. Operating profit from the films segment was Rs 1.03 crore in Q2 2019 as compared to an operating profit of Rs 6.02 crore in Q2 2018 and an operating profit of Rs 9.56 crore in Q1 2019. The company had released one film in Q1 2019 and hence the increased numbers.

    Balaji Telefilms' OTT platform ALTBalaji or digital segment reported more than ten-fold increase in revenue at Rs 14.28 crore as compared to Rs 1.23 crore in Q2 2018 and Rs 5.78 crore in Q1 2019. The segment’s operating loss reduced to Rs 11.16 crore during the period under review as compared to an operating loss of Rs 20.29 crore in Q2 2018 and an operating loss of Rs 16.28 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

    Balaji Telefilms' consolidated revenue from operations in Q1 2019 increased 8.5 percent y-o-y to Rs 119.07 crore as compared to Rs 109.78 crore in Q2 2018, but reduced 3.5 percent q-o-q from Rs 123.44 crore in Q1 2019. Consolidated total revenue in Q2 2019 increased 9.8 percent y-o-y to Rs 128.02 crore from Rs 116.57 crore, but reduced marginally by 0.7 percent q-o-q from Rs 128.86 crore. Consolidated loss in Q2 2019 was slightly higher at Rs 15.44 crore as compared to a loss of Rs 13.84 crore, but was far lower than the Rs 27.03 crore in Q1 2019.

    Let us look at the other numbers reported by Balaji Telefilms

    Balaji Telefilms reported 13.8 percent y-o-y increase in total expenditure in Q2 2019 at Rs 142.48 crore from Rs 125.19 crore in Q2 2018. Cost of production/ acquisition and telecast fees increased 1.5 percent y-o-y to Rs 98.57 crore from Rs 97.11 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal but was 13.6 percent lower q-o-q than the Rs 114.09 crore in Q1 2019. Employee benefits expense in Q2 2019 increased 55.3 percent y-o-y to Rs 13.08 crore from Rs 8.42 crore in Q2 2018 and increased 45 percent q-o-q from Rs 9.02 crore in Q1 2019.

    Other expenses reduced 11.2 percent y-o-y in Q2 2019 to Rs 12.74 crore from Rs 13.76 crore in Q2 2018 and reduced 7.4 percent q-o-q from Rs 13.76 crore in Q1 2019. Marketing and distribution expense in Q2 2019 increased 43.8 percent y-o-y to Rs 11.16 crore from Rs 7.76 crore in Q2 2018, but reduced 13.4 percent q-o-q from Rs 12.88 crore in Q1 2019.

    BENGALURU: The Sameer Manchanda-led Indian cable distribution network and broadband internet services (broadband) provider Den Networks Ltd reported 5.3 percent drop in consolidated operating revenue numbers for the quarter ended 30 September 2018 (Q2 2019, quarter or period under review) as compared to the corresponding year ago quarter (y-o-y, Q2 2018). Though revenue based on a quarter on quarter (q-o-q) basis and some other numbers were lower, the company’s operating profit or EBITDA in Q2 2019 was better than Q1 2019. The company said in Q1 2019 that it had tried to cut down costs, and it has managed to do that, but its consolidated content costs during the quarter under review increased by almost Rs 16 crore y-o-y, at but the same time have declined by almost Rs 2 crore q-o-q.
    Den Network’s operating profit (EBITDA) declined 37.9 percent y-o-y during the period under review to Rs 50.63 crore (16.1 percent of operating revenue) from Rs 81.55 crore (26 percent of operating revenue) but increased 9.9 percent q-o-q from Rs 57.84 crore (18 percent of operating revenue) as mentioned above.

    The company’s losses – after taxes (net loss) as well as total comprehensive loss (TCL) have increased y-o-y as well as q-o-q in the period under review. The company reported a net loss of Rs 28.54 crore during Q2 2019 and a loss of Rs 27.98 crore for Q1 2019 as compared to a net profit (PAT) of Rs 1.11 crore in Q2 2018. Den reported TCL of Rs 28.34 crore for Q2 2019, TCL of Rs 27.75 crore in Q1 2019 as compared to total comprehensive income of Rs 1.31 crore in Q2 2018.

    Segment numbers

    Den has two segments – cable distribution networks (Cable) and broadband. Both segments reported lower y-o-y revenues, but in the case of broadband, Den reported a slight q-o-q increase in revenue for Q2 2019.

    Cable segment revenue reduced 4.6 percent y-o-y in Q2 2019 to Rs 293.86 crore from Rs 307.99 crore in Q2 2018 and reduced 1.6 percent q-o-q from Rs 298.59 crore in Q1 2019. Den reported that the segment had an operating loss of Rs 5.82 crore as compared to an operating profit of Rs 27.75 crore in Q2 2018 but the loss in the quarter under review was lower than the operating loss Rs 8.26 crore in Q1 2019.

    Den Networks reported 16.6 percent y-o-y decline in operating revenue for its broadband segment in Q2 2019 at Rs 16.51 crore as compared to Rs 19.80 crore in Q2 2018 but 5.9 percent more than the operating revenue of Rs 15.59 crore in Q1 2019. The segment’s operating loss reduced slightly to Rs 6.16 crore in Q2 2019 from an operating loss of Rs 8 crore in Q1 2019 and an operating loss of Rs 8.93 crore in Q2 2018.

    Let us look at the numbers reported by Den Networks for Q1 2019

    Den Networks' consolidated revenue from operations in Q2 2019 was Rs 310.37 crore, Rs 314.18 crore in Q1 2019 and Rs 327.79 crore in Q2 2018. Consolidated total revenue including consolidated other income declined 5.9 percent y-o-y and 2.5 percent q-o-q in Q2 2019 at Rs 315.05 crore from Rs 334.90 crore in Q2 2018 and from Rs 322.98 crore in Q1 2019.

    Consolidated total expenditure for the quarter under review increased 11.9 percent y-o-y in Q2 2019 to Rs 336.78 crore (107.3 percent of operating revenue) from Rs 326.12 crore (103.8 percent of operating revenue) in the corresponding quarter of the previous year but declined 1.3 percent q-o-q from Rs 347.07 crore (110.59 percent of operating revenue).

    As mentioned above, the company has seen a y-o-y rise in content cost in actual value as well as in terms of percentage of operating revenue. Consolidated content cost increased 11.9 percent y-o-y in Q2 2019 to Rs 148.23 crore (47.2 percent of operating revenue) as compared to Rs 132.47 crore (42.2 percent of operating revenue) in Q2 2018 but declined 1.3 percent q-o-q from Rs 150.12 crore (47.8 percent of operating revenue). Consolidated placement fees increased 3 percent y-o-y in Q2 2019 to Rs 11.02 crore (3.5 percent of operating revenue) from Rs 10.70 crore (3.4 percent of operating revenue) and increased 9.7 percent q-o-q from Rs 10.05 crore (3.2 percent of operating revenue).

    Den Networks' consolidated employee benefits expense during the period under review declined 13.7 percent y-o-y to Rs 23.64 crore (7.5 percent of operating revenue) from Rs 27.38 crore (8.7 percent of operating revenue) in Q2 2018 but increased 0.8 percent q-o-q from Rs 23.45 crore (7.5 percent of operating revenue). Consolidated other expenses in Q2 2019 increased 1.3 percent y-o-y to Rs 76.65 crore (24.4 percent of operating revenue) in Q1 2019 from Rs 75.69 crore (24.1 percent of operating revenue) in the corresponding quarter of the previous year but reduced 8.9 percent q-o-q from Rs 84.16 crore (26.8 percent of operating revenue).

    Strategic investments in Den by Reliance Industries Ltd

    On 17 October 2018, the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries reported to the bourses that it has decided to make strategic investments thought a primary investment of Rs 2,045 crore through a preferential issue under SEBI regulations and secondary purchase of Rs 245 crore from the existing promoters for a 66 percent stake in Den. Reliance also said that it would make a primary investment of Rs 2,940 crore through a preferential issue under SEBI regulations for a 51.3 percent stake in Hathway Cable and Datacom Ltd (Hathway) of the Rajan Raheja group.

    GTPL cable TV business revenue up in second quarter

    BENGALURU: Indian multi-system operator and internet service provider GTPL Hathway Ltd (GTPL) reported 13.8 percent increase in total income for the quarter ended 30 September 2018 (Q2 2019, quarter or period under review) as compared to the corresponding year ago quarter (y-o-y) Q2 2018. GTPL’s Total Income in Q1 2019 was Rs 317.40 crore, for the corresponding year ago quarter it was Rs 278.88 crore.

    GTPL has two segments – cable TV business and internet service. Cable TV business operating result increased 82.1 percent y-o-y to Rs 15.99 crore in Q2 2019 from Rs 8.78 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Operating revenue of GTPL’s cable TV business increased 15.6 percent y-o-y to Rs 276.69 crore from Rs 239.32 crore.

    GTPL’s unternet service operating revenue in Q2 2019 was almost flat – it increased 0.3 percent y-o-y to Rs 35.75 crore from Rs 35.64 crore. Internet service segment’s operating results for Q2 2019 declined by 99.6 percent y-o-y to just Rs 0.01 crore from Rs 3.67 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

    GTPL’s consolidated profit after tax (PAT) increased 28.5 percent y-o-y in Q2 2019 to Rs 16.01 crore from Rs 12.45 crore in Q2 2018. Consolidated total comprehensive income for the period increased 33.8 percent y-o-y to Rs 16.79 crore from Rs 12.55 crore. Consolidated operating profit (EBITDA) excluding other income increased 11.5 percent y-o-y in Q2 2019 to Rs 85.20 crore (27.3 percent of operating or op revenue) from Rs 76.39 crore (27.8 percent of op revenue) in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal.

    Let us look at the other numbers reported by GTPL Hathway

    Consolidated total expenditure increased 15.7 percent y-o-y during the quarter under review to Rs 294.74 crore from Rs 254.81 crore in Q2 2018. Pay channel cost in Q2 2019 increased 20.4 percent y-o-y to Rs 132.33 crore from Rs 109.89 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Other operational costs reduced 10.6 percent y-o-y in Q2 2019 to Rs 20.98 crore from Rs 23.46 crore in Q2 2018.

    Employee benefits expense in Q2 2019 increased 9.5 percent y-o-y to Rs 35.81 crore from Rs 32.70 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal. Finance costs increased 68.8 percent y-o-y during the quarter under review to Rs 17.91 crore from Rs 10.61 crore. Other expenses in the period increased 17.2 percent y-o-y to Rs 38.12 percent in Q2 2019 from Rs 32.52 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

    BENGALURU: In the first quarter of the previous fiscal, restructuring at Indian multi system operator (MSO) Hathway Cable and Datacom Ltd (Hathway) had brought for it a positive bottomline. The pared company reported a profit of Rs 2.716 crore (including an exceptional item –gain from the sale of shares of Rs 1.713 crore) for the quarter ended 30 June 2017 (Q1 2018). The company improved its performance in the second quarter of the previous fiscal (Q2 2018) and reported profit after taxes of Rs 14.01 crore. However, in the quarter ended 30 September 2018 (Q2 2019, quarter under review), the company reported a loss of Rs 5.90 crore as compared to a loss of Rs 2.63 crore in the immediate trailing quarter (Q1 2019).

    Higher expenses which included higher finance costs and higher forex losses were chiefly responsible for the loss, besides of course, the fact that the Jio juggernaut has steamrolled all kinds of broadband internet service providers. The company reported almost same operating revenue (0.5 percent lower) for Q2 2019 at Rs 130.55 crore as compared to Rs 131.15 crore in Q2 2018. Due to higher other income of Rs 7.63 crore in the quarter under review as compared to Rs 5.93 crore in Q2 2018, Hathway’s total income was 0.8 percent more y-o-y at Rs 138.18 crore as compared to Rs 137.08 crore.

    Operating EBITDA during Q2 2019 at Rs 46.58 crore (35.6 percent of operating revenue) was 11.5 percent down y-o-y as compared to Rs 52.66 crore (40.2 percent of operating revenue).

    Total expenditure in Q2 2019 was 144.08 crore or 110.4 percent of total income, 17.1 percent more than the Rs 123.07 crore (93.8 percent of operating revenue). Operating expenses in Q2 2019 was 5.4 percent lower y-o-y at Rs 31.10 crore (23.8 percent of operating revenue) as compared to Rs 32.89 crore (25.1 percent of operating revenue).

    Employee benefits expense for the quarter was Rs 11.29 crore (8.6 percent of of operating revenue) which was 7.2 percent higher y-o-y as compared to Rs 10.53 crore (8 percent of of operating revenue). Finance costs in Q2 2019 at Rs 32.22 crore (24.7 percent of operating revenue) was 32.2 percent higher y-o-y than Rs 20.19 crore (15.4 percent of operating revenue) in Q2 2018.

    Other expenses at Rs 41.48 crore (31.8 percent of operating revenue) was 18 percent higher y-o-y than Rs 35.07 crore (26.7 percent of operating revenue). Other expenses included a higher forex loss of Rs 7.2 crore in Q2 2019 as compared to a forex loss of Rs 1.28 crore in Q2 2018.

    BENGALURU: Indian direct to home (DTH) behemoth Dish TV India Ltd (Dish TV) reported profit after tax (PAT) of Rs 19.7 crore for the quarter ended 30 September 2018 (Q2 2019, quarter under review) as compared to PAT of Rs 22.5 crore in the immediate trailing quarter Q1 2109. Dish TV and Videocon d2h were merged on 22 March 2018 and hence Q1 2019 was the first full reporting quarter for the merged entity. The board of directors of the company have proposed a dividend of Rs 0.50 per fully paid up subscriber and issued equity share of Re 1 each. This is the first ever dividend proposed by the DTH major.

    Since results of the year ago quarter are not comparable, a quarter on quarter (q-o-q) comparison of the numbers of the joint entity has been done here. Dish TV’s operating profit or EBITDA in Q2 2019 was Rs 540.6 crore, 2.9 percent lower than Rs 556.8 crore in Q1 2019. The company reported a 3.7 percent q-o-q decline in operating revenue for the quarter under review at Rs 1,594.3 crore as compared to Rs1,655.6 crore in Q1 2019.

    Dish TV’s subscriber additions picked up speed during the first quarter. The net number of 301 thousand additions took Dish TV’s subscriber base to 2.33 crore in Q1 2019. The company picked up another net 200,000 subscribers in Q2 2019 to ramp up its subs base to 2.35 crore.

    Subscription revenue declined 2.4 percent q-o-q increase in Q2 2018 to Rs 1,453.6 crore from Rs 1,489.3. ARPU for the quarter declined to Rs 207 from Rs. 214 the previous quarter. Advertisement revenue for the quarter under review declined 34.8 percent q-o-q to Rs 22.6 crore Rs 34.6 crore. Bandwidth charges (revenue) reduced 3.4 percent q-o-q to Rs 37.4 crore in Q2 2019 from Rs 38.7 crore. Other income declined 26.4 percent q-o-q in Q2 2019 to Rs 80.7 crore from Rs 93.1 crore.

    Dish TV CMD Jawahar Goel said, “We remain extremely confident about our business and our strong financials give us the courage to compete against anyone in this space. That said, we continue to focus on growth with profitability keeping in mind our objective of maximising shareholder returns while aggressively investing in the business.”

    Talking about future competitive scenario in the TV distribution space, Goel, said, “With limited takers for fibre or fixed line broadband, watching television through IPTV is going to be even scarce. In fact, post running an internal analysis, we see less than 1 percent of our subscriber base to be vulnerable to any kind of IPTV threat in the forseeable future. Our competitive strength in the rural market ring fences our subscriber base almost completely.”

    Talking about the current technological buzz, Dish TV group CEO Anil Dua, said, “There is change but a lot of exaggeration as well. We acknowledge the new choices that the television consumer is getting exposed to but you can’t undermine the unique dynamics of India as a consuming nation. The television consumer likes flexibility but not at the cost of affordability. We still are a nation with 98 percent of the households having a single TV at home and with more than 79 percent CRTVs. Our soon to be launched ‘SMRT Stick’ will be the ideal value for money offering for TV households to convert their CRTVs into smart TVs and experience OTT content.”

    The merged Dish TV’s consolidated total expenditure reduced 4.1 percent q-o-q in Q2 2019 to Rs 1,053.7 crore from Rs 1,098.9 crore. Cost of gods and services in Q2 2019 reduced 1.9 percent q-o-q to Rs 867.2 crore from Rs 884.1 crore. Personnel cost during the quarter under review increased 8.6 percent q-o-q to Rs 62.6 crore from Rs 57.7 crore in Q1 2019. Other expenses in Q1 2019 reduced 21.2 percent q-o-q to Rs 123.8 crore from Rs 157 crore from Rs 195.97 crore.

    BENGALURU: Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani’s largest startup in the world in the form of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd or Jio has only gone from strength to strength since its inception. The mobile and broadband subsidiary of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), which is already the largest mobile data carrier in the world with more than 25 crore subscribers, reported EBITDA growth of nearly 2.5 times for the quarter ended 30 September 2018 (Q2 2019, quarter under review) as compared to the corresponding year ago quarter. Jio’s operating revenue for Q2 2019 grew by a healthy 50.3 percent year-on- year (y-o-y).

    Some of the highlights of Jio’s performance in Q2 2019 include:

    Standalone revenue from operations for Q2 2019 was Rs 9,240 crore  with a 13.9 per cent q-o-q  growth as compared to Rs 8,109 crore in the previous quarter Q1 2019.

    Jio’s standalone EBITDA of Rs 3,573 crore for Q2 209 was 13.5 per cent higher q-o-q with EBITDA margin of 38.7 per cent as compared to Rs 3,147 crore and an EBITDA margin of 38.8 per cent in Q1 2019.

    Jio’s standalone Net Profit was Rs 681 crore.

    The company says that it closed Q2 2019 with a subscriber base  of 25.23 crore. Jio says in a press release that it had the lowest churn in the industry at 0.66 per cent per month. ARPU during the quarter was Rs 131.7 per subscriber per month.

    RIL’s organised retail arm’s revenue for Q2 FY19 grew by 121.5 per cent y-o-y to Rs 32,436 crore from Rs 14,646 crore. The segment’s EBIT rose by an unprecedented 272.5 per cent y-o-y to Rs 1,244 crore from Rs 334 crore.

    RIL chairman Amabani said in a press release, “Jio was conceived with a mission to connect everyone and everything, everywhere – always at the highest quality and the most affordable price. We, at Jio, are glad with our progress towards our mission with more than 250 million subscribers on our network within 25 months of commencement of services. We have enabled our customers to adopt the digital life, with record consumption of data and use of digital services. Our next generation FTTH and enterprise services are now being made available to our customers to further enhance our value proposition to our customers.”

    “We are making rapid progress on the growth of our digital platforms, across new commerce, media and entertainment, agriculture, education, healthcare and financial services, which will further enhance the quality of life and productivity of the people of India, ” added Ambani.

    In an RIL earnings release, Ambani said, “Our commitment to create consumer value is gathering momentum, with the robust scale-up of India- centric consumer facing businesses. The financial performance of both Retail and Jio reflect the benefits of scale, technology and operational efficiencies. Retail business EBITDA has grown three fold on y-o-y basis whereas Reliance Jio EBITDA has grown nearly 2.5 times. Jio has now crossed 250 million subscriber milestone and continues to be the largest mobile data carrier in the world.”

    RIL achieved revenue of Rs 156,291 crore ($ 21.6 billion), an increase of 54.5 per cent as compared to Rs 101,169 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. RILs’ Profit after tax (PAT) was higher by 17.4 per cent at Rs 9,516 crore ($ 1.3 billion) as against Rs 8,109 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. Operating profit before other income and depreciation increased by 35.6 per cent to Rs 21,108 crore ($ 2.9 billion) from Rs 15,565 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year.

    BENGALURU: Sun TV Network Limited (Sun TV) reported improved numbers across all important parameters for the quarter ended 30 June 2018 (Q1 2019, quarter or period under review) as compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year (Q1 2018). The company reported 40.8 percent higher year on year (y-o-y) standalone total income in the quarter under review at Rs 1,159.39 crore as compared to Rs 823.38 crore in Q1 2018. Standalone operating revenue increased 42.5 percent y-o-y to Rs 1,120.39 crore in Q1 2019 from Rs 786.32 crore in Q1 2018.The board of directors of the company has declared an interim dividend of 100 percent or Rs 5 per equity share of face value of Rs 5 each.

    The company has stated in its earnings release that standalone subscription revenue at Rs 311.27 crore was up 15 percent y-o-y.

    The company’s standalone profit after tax or PAT in Q1 2019 improved 62.6 percent y-o-y to Rs 409.14 crore as compared to Rs 251.64 crore in Q1 2019.

    Sun TV standalone EBIDTA in Q1 2019 was Rs 731.74 crore (65.6 percent of operating revenue), 63.9 percent higher as compared to Rs 448.36 crore (57 percent of operating revenue) in Q1 2018.

    Total Expenditure (TE) during the period under review increased 20.7 percent y-o-y to Rs 532.71 crore as compared to Rs 441.5 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

    Operating expense in Q1 2019 increased 18.4 percent y-o-y to Rs 80.90 crore from Rs 68.34 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Employee Benefits Expense in Q1 2019 increased 24.5 percent y-o-y to Rs 85.16 crore as compared to Rs 64.42 crore in Q1 2018. Other expenses (OE) in the Q1 2019 increased 28.1 percent to Rs 148.29 crore as compared to Rs 115.75 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

    SunRisers Hyderabad adds to operating profits of Sun TV

    Su TV paid 16.6 percent lower IPL Franchisee Fees during the quarter under review at Rs 71.33 crore as compared to Rs 85.48 crore in Q1 2018. Sun TV’s IPL franchise has turned operationally profitable as per the notes in Sun TV’s financial statement. The company has included income of Rs 385.92 crore from Sun Risers Hyderabad and costs incurred on it of Rs186.66 crore in Q1 2019. Corresponding numbers for Sun Risers Hyderabad for year ago quarter were income of Rs 143.10 crore and costs of Rs 165.50.
