    Q1-17: Low programming and low realisation lower Balaji Telefilms standalone topline

    BENGALURU: Balaji Telefilms Limited (Balaji) reported 23 percent year-over-year (y-o-y) decline in standalone total revenue from operations (TIO) for the quarter ended 30 June 2016 (Q1-17, current quarter). The company reported standalone revenue for Q1-17 at Rs 53.59 crore and Rs 69.38 crore for the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Revenue from Balajis’ Commissioned Programs segment in Q1-17 was Rs 52.64 crore, while for Q1-16 it was Rs 68.44 crore. Programming hours for Q1-17 were 225.5 hours, lower than the 257 hours reported for the corresponding year ago quarter. Net realisation per hour was also lower at Rs 23.33 lakh in the current quarter as compared to Rs 26.6 lakh in Q1-16. The company says that the previous quarter included Nach Baliye and Jodha Akbar resulting in higher revenue as compared to the current quarter. The company says that Q2-17 will have two new shows Mazaak Mazaak Mein on Life Ok and Bhramarakshas on Zee TV. Margin was lower in the current quarter due to launch of a new show Kawach on June 11, 2016 which will improve in the subsequent quarters

    The company’s Films segment reported operating revenue of Rs 53.44 crore in Q1-17 as compared to Rs 1.04 crore in Q1-16. The segment’s operating profit in the current quarter was Rs 2.53 crore as compared to an operating loss of Rs 0.45 crore. The company says that revenue growth in the current quarter is due to release of Azhar and Udta Punjab. The company expects revenue of approximately Rs 18.61 crore for satellite, digital and other rights of Azhar and Udta Punjab in Q2-17. It says further that piracy of two of its movies led to a lower profit on Udta Punjab and loss on Great Grand Masti (released in July 2016) resulting into an approximate loss of revenue of Rs 36 crore.

    Balaji’s consolidated TIO increased 54.9 percent y-o-y to Rs 117.38 crore in Q1-17 as compared to Rs 75.80 crore in Q1-16. The company reported negative consolidated EBIDTA of Rs 3.01 crore for the current quarter as compared to a consolidated operating profit of Rs 4.76 crore in Q1-16.

    Total comprehensive income in the current quarter was lower at Rs 0.66 crore as compared to a comprehensive income of Rs 4.28 crore in Q1-16.Balaji reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 0.2 crore in the current quarter as compared to a profit after tax of Rs 4.4 crore in Q1-16. The company says that net loss has been incurred in the current quarter after accounting for income tax of Rs 2.72 crore which relates to its television segment.

    Total Expenditure in the current quarter was Rs 120.35 crore (102.5 percent of TIO) which was 64.5 percent more as compared to Rs 73.16 crore (96.5 percent of TIO) in Q1-16. Cost of Production/Acquisition and Telecast Fees in Q1-17 was Rs 83.92 crore (71.5 percent of TIO), 5.7 percent lower than Rs 89 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter.

    Marketing and distribution expense in Q1-17 increased to Rs 13.26 crore as compared to Rs 0.30 crore in Q1-16. Employee Benefit Expense in the current quarter increased 54.1 percent y-o-y to Rs 6.46 crore (5.5 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 4.19 crore (5.5 percent of TIO) in Q1-16. Other expenditure in Q1-17 increased 17.3 percent y-o-y to Rs 7.82 crore (6.7 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 6.67 crore (8.8 percent of TIO).

    Balaji says that it has so far invested Rs14.3 crore in its digital foray ALT Digital, which is currently in a prelaunch phase with expenses mainly on account of content, technology, salaries and other business overheads.

    BENGALURU: Indian digital cinema distribution network and in-cinema advertising platform, UFO Moviez Limited (UFO) reported a 9.5 percent year-over-year (y-o-y) growth in advertising revenue for the quarter ended 30 June 2016 (Q1-17, current quarter). The company reported advertising revenue of Rs 39.7 crore in Q1-17 as compared to Rs 36.4 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year (Q1-16). Average advertisement minutes sold per show per screen increased to 3.97 (Q1-16 – 3.81) minutes during Q1-17.

    Theatrical and In-Cinema advertisement (consolidated excluding new businesses) revenues grew by 3.2 percent y-o-y to Rs 133.2 crore (Q1-16 – Rs 129 crore). Consolidated revenues improved by 3.1 percent y-o-y in Q1-17 to Rs 134.6 crore (Q1-16 – Rs 130.6 crore).

    Total Expense in Q1-17 increased 9.1 percent y-o-y to Rs 98.2 crore from Rs 90.0 crore in Q1-16. Ad revenue share (expense) in Q1-17 increased 5.4 percent y-o-y to Rs 12.08 crore from Rs 11.47 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Visual Print sharing expense in Q1-17 increased 19.8 percent y-o-y to Rs 19.44 crore from Rs 16.23 crore in Q1-16.

    The company’s expense towards purchase of digital cinema equipment and lamps in the current quarter declined 13.7 percent y-o-y to Rs 13.77 crore as compared to Rs 15.96 crore in Q1-16.

    EBIDTA in the current quarter declined 10.3 percent y-o-y to Rs 36.4 crore from Rs 40.6 crore in Q1-16. Profit after tax (PAT) in Q1-17 declined 30.1 percent y-o-y to Rs 9 crore from Rs 12.8 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter. PAT, profit from associates and minority interest in Q1-17 declined 25.9 percent y-o-y to Rs 9.8 crore from Rs 13.3 crore in Q1-16.

    BENGALURU: TV Today Network Limited (TVTN) reported 14.6 percent increase in consolidated revenue (consolidated total income from operations, consolidated TIO) for the year ended 31 March 2016 (FY-16, current) as compared to the previous year. The company’s consolidated Profit after Tax (PAT) increased 16 percent in FY-16. TVTN reported consolidated TIO of Rs 546.01 crore in FY-16 and Rs 476.58 crore in FY-15. PAT in the current year was Rs 95.04 crore (17.2 percent PAT margin) as compared to Rs 81.03 crore (17 percent PAT margin) in FY-15.

    TVTN’s advertising, distribution and sales promotion (ad expense) in FY-16 increased 17.5 percent to Rs 119.52 crore (21.9 percent of TIO) from Rs 101.75 crore (21.3 percent of TIO) in FY-15.

    The TVTN board has recommended a final dividend @ 35 percent on the paid-up capital of the company, i.e., Rs 1.75 per share of Rs 5/- each for FY-16 subject to the approval of shareholders at the ensuing Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the company.

    BENGALURU: Indian multi system operator (MSO) Hathway Cable and Datacom Limited (Hathway) reported 25.6 per cent YoY growth in standalone Total Income from Operations (TIO) in Q3-2016 (quarter ended 31 December, 2015, current quarter) at Rs 300.43 crore as compared to Rs 239.15 crore and 9.6 per cent more than the Rs 270.03 crore in Q2-2016.

    The company’s EBIDTA (excluding other income) in Q3-2016 more than doubled (by 2.02 times) YoY to Rs 49.81 crore (16.6 per cent margin) as compared to Rs 24.58 crore (10.3 per cent margin) and increased 45.8 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 34.15 crore (12.5 per cent margin) in the immediate trailing quarter.

    Subscription numbers, broadband, activation and placement revenue

    Hathway says that its consolidated set top box (STB) deployment reached 96 lakh subscribers (Q3-2016 addition eight lakh) as on 31 December, 2015 and that 80 per cent of its cable universe is digitised.

    Hathway consolidated broadband subscribers increased by 50,000 in Q3-2015 to 5.67 lakh.

    Cable TV subscription revenue in Q3-2016 increased 9.1 per cent YoY to Rs 108  crore as compared to Rs 99 crore and was almost flat (increased by less than 0.5 per cent) QoQ as compared to Rs 107.5 crore.

    Broadband subscription revenue in the current quarter increased 53.4 per cent YoY to Rs 78.7 crore as compared to Rs 57.7 crore and increased 9.5 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 57.7 crore.

    Activation revenue in Q3-2016 more than tripled (3.1 times) YoY to Rs 22.3 crore as compared to Rs 7.2 crore and was almost fivefold (4.7 times) of the Rs 4.5 crore in Q2-2016.

    Placement revenue increased 8.4 per cent in the current quarter to Rs 82.2 crore as compared to Rs 75.8 crore in the corresponding prior year quarter, but declined 3.1 per cent as compared to Rs 84.8 crore in Q2-2016.

    ARPUs

    Net of taxes cable ARPU in Digital Addressable System (DAS) Phase I was Rs 102 and Phase II was Rs 83 as compared to Rs 100 and Rs 80 respectively in the immediate prior quarter.

    Hathway broadband standalone ARPUs increased 3.8 per cent QoQ from Rs 658 to Rs 683.

    Employee Benefit Expense in Q3-2016 increased 37.4 per cent YoY to Rs 19.19 crore (6.4 per cent of TIO) from Rs 13.96 crore (5.8 per cent of TIO) in Q3-2015 and increased 6.4 per cent from Rs 17.83 crore (6.5 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2016.

    BENGALURU: Balaji Telefilms Limited reported eight per cent YoY growth in total income from operations (TIO) at Rs 78.65 for the quarter ended 31 December, 2015 (Q3-2016, current quarter) as compared to Rs 71.54 crore and 43.8 per cent QoQ jump from Rs 52.85 crore.

    Commissioned programs in the current quarter increased 24.4 per cent YoY to 712.2 hours as compared to 572.7 hours and increased 47.6 per cent as compared to 482.6 hours in the immediate trailing quarter. Net realisation per hour of commissioned programs increased 17.5 per cent YoY to Rs 24.2 lakh as compared to Rs 20.6 lakh, and was almost flat QoQ as compared to Rs 24.3 lakh.

    The company’s revenue from commissioned programs segment in Q3-2016 increased 16.2 per cent YoY to Rs 72.01 crore as compared to Rs 61.97 crore and rose 40.7 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 51.18. The segment’s operating profit in the current quarter more than doubled (by 2.5 times) YoY to Rs 18.94 crore and increased 45.7 per cent QoQ to Rs 13 crore.

    Balaji’s other segment – Films, reported revenue of just Rs 1.12 crore in the current quarter as compared to Rs 0.13 crore in Q3-2015 and Rs 1.64 in the immediate trailing quarter. The Films’ segment reported operating loss of Rs 1.91 crore in the current quarter as compared to an operating loss of Rs 2.83 crore in Q3-2015 and an operating profit of Rs 0.06 crore in Q2-2016.

    Other consolidated numbers reported by Balaji Telefilms

    Total Expenditure in the current quarter declined 16.1 per cent YoY to Rs 68.68 crore as compared to Rs 81.81 crore, but increased 49.8 per cent as compared to Rs 45.85 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

    The company’s cost of production/acquisition and telecast fees increased 5.7 per cent YoY to Rs 68.04 crore as compared to Rs 64.39 crore, but declined 15.3 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 80.22 crore.

    Staff cost increased 16.9 per cent YoY to Rs 4.89 crore as compared to Rs 4.19 crore but reduced 1.2 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 4.95.

    Balaji Telefilms standalone numbers

    Balaji Telefilms’ YoY standalone profit after tax (PAT) catapulted more than six-fold at Rs 20.66 crore (28.7 per cent margin) as compared to Rs 3.09 crore (5.4 per cent margin) and was double QoQ as compared to Rs 10.31 crore (20.2 per cent standalone margin) in the immediate trailing quarter. 
    The company reported 26 per cent YoY increase in standalone total income from operations (TIO) in the current quarter to Rs 72.3 crore from Rs 57.27 crore and 41 per cent jump from Rs 51.11 crore in Q2-2016.

    Q3-2016: Balaji revenue up 8%; reports higher programming hours

    BENGALURU: Balaji Telefilms Limited reported eight per cent YoY growth in total income from operations (TIO) at Rs 78.65 for the quarter ended 31 December, 2015 (Q3-2016, current quarter) as compared to Rs 71.54 crore and 43.8 per cent QoQ jump from Rs 52.85 crore.

    Commissioned programs in the current quarter increased 24.4 per cent YoY to 712.2 hours as compared to 572.7 hours and increased 47.6 per cent as compared to 482.6 hours in the immediate trailing quarter. Net realisation per hour of commissioned programs increased 17.5 per cent YoY to Rs 24.2 lakh as compared to Rs 20.6 lakh, and was almost flat QoQ as compared to Rs 24.3 lakh.

    The company’s revenue from commissioned programs segment in Q3-2016 increased 16.2 per cent YoY to Rs 72.01 crore as compared to Rs 61.97 crore and rose 40.7 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 51.18. The segment’s operating profit in the current quarter more than doubled (by 2.5 times) YoY to Rs 18.94 crore and increased 45.7 per cent QoQ to Rs 13 crore.

    Balaji’s other segment – Films, reported revenue of just Rs 1.12 crore in the current quarter as compared to Rs 0.13 crore in Q3-2015 and Rs 1.64 in the immediate trailing quarter. The Films’ segment reported operating loss of Rs 1.91 crore in the current quarter as compared to an operating loss of Rs 2.83 crore in Q3-2015 and an operating profit of Rs 0.06 crore in Q2-2016.

    Total Expenditure in the current quarter declined 16.1 per cent YoY to Rs 68.68 crore as compared to Rs 81.81 crore, but increased 49.8 per cent as compared to Rs 45.85 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

    The company’s cost of production/acquisition and telecast fees increased 5.7 per cent YoY to Rs 68.04 crore as compared to Rs 64.39 crore, but declined 15.3 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 80.22 crore.

    Staff cost increased 16.9 per cent YoY to Rs 4.89 crore as compared to Rs 4.19 crore but reduced 1.2 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 4.95.

    Balaji Telefilms standalone numbers

    Balaji Telefilms’ YoY standalone profit after tax (PAT) catapulted more than six-fold at Rs 20.66 crore (28.7 per cent margin) as compared to Rs 3.09 crore (5.4 per cent margin) and was double QoQ as compared to Rs 10.31 crore (20.2 per cent standalone margin) in the immediate trailing quarter. 
    The company reported 26 per cent YoY increase in standalone total income from operations (TIO) in the current quarter to Rs 72.3 crore from Rs 57.27 crore and 41 per cent jump from Rs 51.11 crore in Q2-2016.

    BENGALURU: Den Networks Ltd reported 31 per cent YoY growth in consolidated Total Income from operations (TIO) in the quarter ended 31 December, 2015 (Q3-2016, current quarter) at Rs 352.18 crore as compared to Rs 268.81 crore. TIO increased 29.8 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 271.29 crore. The company reported EBIDTA of Rs 42.99 crore (12.2 per cent margin) in the current quarter as compared to an operating profit of Rs 0.28 crore (0.1 per cent margin) in Q3-2015 and an operating loss of Rs 11.27 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

    Den reported a lower YoY and QoQ consolidated loss of Rs 48.37 crore in the current quarter as compared to a loss of Rs 62.60 crore in Q3-2015 and a loss of Rs 75.23 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    Segment Revenue

     

    Three segments contribute to Den’s revenue: Cable distribution network segment (Cable); Broadband segment and Soccer segment

     

    Cable segment reported 26.3 per cent YoY revenue growth at Rs 326.43 crore as compared to Rs 258.55 crore and 24.1 per cent QoQ growth as compared to Rs 263.06 crore. The cable segment reported an operating profit of Rs 32.64 crore, an operating loss of Rs 0.35 crore in Q3-2015 and an operating loss of Rs 32.11 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    The company’s broadband segment revenue increased by over five times YoY (5.5 times) at Rs 11.96 crore (3.4 per cent of TIO) as compared to Rs 2.17 crore (0.8 per cent of TIO) and increased 58 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 8.23 crore (three per cent of TIO). The segment’s YoY operating loss increased to Rs 19.57 crore as compared to Rs 12.37 crore, but reduced QoQ as compared to Rs 23.07 crore.

     

    Den’s Soccer segment reported revenue of Rs 13.97 crore as compared to Rs 8.09 crore in Q3-2015 and nil revenue in Q2-2016. Soccer segment reported lower YoY operating loss of Rs 26.11 crore as compared to Rs 35.21 crore, but higher QoQ than the Rs 8.57 crore.

     

    Den’s Total Expenditure in the current quarter increased 15.3 per cent YoY to Rs 365.23 crore (103.7 per cent of TIO) as compared to Rs 316.74 crore (117.8 per cent of TIO) and increased nine per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 335.04 crore (123.5 per cent).

     

    Content cost in Q3-2016 increased 19.9 per cent YoY to Rs 131.94 crore (37.5 per cent of TIO) as compared to Rs 110.06 crore (40.9 per cent of TIO), but reduced 3.5 per cent YoY as compared to Rs 136.77 crore (50.4 per cent of TIO).

     

    Finance costs in the current quarter reduced 15.7 per cent YoY to Rs 19.73 crore (5.6 per cent of TIO) as compared to Rs 23.41 crore (8.7 per cent of TIO) and reduced 7.2 per cent QoQ as compared to Rs 21.25 crore (7.8 per cent of TIO).
