Aaj Tak Bangla’s Durga Puja coverage goes beyond food and pandal hopping

Mumbai: Durga Puja is the time of the year that puts Bengal on the global itinerary of culture and festivities. For Bengal, Durga Puja is not just a festival but also a celebration of art, history, heritage, and homecoming. A five-day-long celebration, Durga Puja is more than what meets the eye and Aaj Tak Bangla celebrated its first Durga Puja with the promise of bringing out untold stories from not just Bengal but also from the Bengali diaspora across the globe.

The channel’s week-long coverage through the pujas included ground reports of theme pandals, heritage pujas that go back to hundreds of years, celebrity puja celebrations, stories on gastronomic delights, and much more.

Aaj Tak Bangla’s puja reportage debut travelled all the way to USA and Germany, not only restricting itself to Bengal.

However, the coverage was not just about festivities, Aaj Tak Bangla touched upon other important issues around the festival too. For instance, Aaj Tak cameras reached Malda to capture how a small puja organised by the locals of the area celebrates communal harmony. Both Hindus and Muslims participate in the puja and enjoy the festivities together. While they have never publicised their pujo ever before, Aaj Tak’s coverage of this small pujo in the outskirts of Kolkata brought out the true spirit of Durga Puja which is all about spreading peace and unity, due to which this unique puja is now popular in the state and is already setting an example for others to follow.

Apart from all the above initiatives, the channel also saw intellectuals from various walks of life contributing opinion pieces to add to the highly engaging and impactful Puja Aaj Tak celebrated this year. The Aaj Tak Bangla’s Puja coverage was supported by Dollar, Assam Downtown University, and Adani Wilmar as its sponsors.

  • Elegant Steel celebrates Durga Puja with ‘The Steel Within’ campaign

Elegant Steel celebrates Durga Puja with ‘The Steel Within’ campaign

Mumbai: As the country readies itself to immerse in the grand annual five-day celebration of Durga Puja which pays homage to the goddess Durga, homegrown manufacturer of iron and steel products Elegant Steel has marked the occasion with the launch of its new film called ‘Narishakti– The Steel Within.’

The film, conceptualised by FCB India, showcases how even as we celebrate the power of women for the nine days of Navratri, we disempower her for the rest of the year.

Directed by Pritha Chakraborty, the TVC aims to highlight how our women are either cast as goddesses or objects of desire, but rarely is an attempt made to understand them for who they really are. The rousing film ends on the note “This pujo, we honour the steel within,” and is dedicated to all those women who were judged and whose mettle was tested to serve the popular narrative to keep women “in their place.”

“This work is brave because many brands are aware of how social media tries to objectify and classify women, but nobody has spoken about it,” said FCB India creative chairperson Swati Bhattacharya. “Elegant steel asks us to celebrate the steel in us and continue to be the woman we want to be even if it rattles some people.”

The film celebrates how even one woman freeing herself from the narrative, can inspire millions to break free, refuse to be cowed down and write their own story.

“Our values have always stood for quality, strength and resilience and this Durga Puja we wanted to celebrate these exact same values we see in every woman who has gone through the fires of being judged and tested and has emerged stronger,” stated Elegant Steel chairperson Swati Agarwal.

  • CASE STUDY: How ABP Ananda put the ‘spotlight’ on Sunsilk for Durga Puja

CASE STUDY: How ABP Ananda put the ‘spotlight’ on Sunsilk for Durga Puja

Mumbai: Durga Puja marks the homecoming of goddess Durga and is the biggest festival in Kolkata. The grandeur and charm are no less in other parts of the country too and brands across categories release new campaigns to reach out to their target audience during this festive season. This past year the celebrations were somewhat muted due to the pandemic, however, ABP Ananda left no stone unturned to woo its audiences by lifting the pall of gloom with its special Durga Puja programming.

Having partnered with a plethora of brands from diverse categories, ABP Network’s branded content division, ‘ABP Spotlight’ created several special integrations for partner brands such as Sunsilk to help achieve brand awareness and equity through interactive and customizable sponsor integrations.

These properties have created exciting opportunities for brands to be involved in the channel’s programming in a meaningful way that doesn’t detract from its content, offering a high degree of presence and brand-building capabilities. For Sunsilk, ABP Spotlight created a five vignette series with each day defining a ‘Pujo look’. It shows the significance of all Pujo days from Sasthi to Dashami and the role of Bengali women in it.

The vignette series brought together three talented and influential faces in Kolkata – upcoming model cum actress Darshana Banik, star hair-stylist Jolly Chanda and popular styling artist Sandip Jasiwal. Each of these vignettes features Darshana dressed up in new attire and look for each day of the Puja, aided by Chanda and Jasiwal’s professional expertise which make these vignettes even more interesting with their hair-do tips, anecdotes, and easy styling hacks that women can do at the convenience of their home. Thus, the essence of Girlgiri (Sunsilk positioning) and the mood of the festival have been synergized into creating this integration.

During the anxious Covid times, Sunsilk wanted to spread some festive cheer amongst its consumers. The haircare brand wanted to promote easy DIY hairstyles during the Durga Puja. Their current brand communication of “Tyohaar wali feel, tyohaar wali deal” was converted into the Durga Puja Look of the day series. It showed the significance of all Pujo days- from Sasthi to Dashami, and the role of Bengali women in it.

Sunsilk brand owner HUL’s Sandhya Poojary said, “We partnered with ABP Ananda on Parae Parae Serar Lodai (PPSL 2020) which is a fun Contest between Pandal Committees. As a part of the campaign, ABP Ananda is helping us reach out to our girls by creating beautiful short stories around the festive looks for the five days of the Durga Puja and encouraging them to gear up for the festive season under our ‘Tyohar Wali Feel, Tyohar Wali Deal’ campaign, through a series of vignettes.”

Durga Puja is not just a religious or a social event for Bengalis, it is an event that is woven into the social fabric of the society. It has a grip on values, beliefs, cultural orientation, fun, and the social quotient. Poojary added, “We hope to further inroad into the Bengal market and create recall in the hearts of all Bengalis. We look forward to many such associations with ABP Network in the future.” Hence this special vignette has been created which beautifully blends in with the core features of the haircare brand, the festive revelry aspect of Durga Puja, and the overall celebratory bonhomie.

Through creative and authentic integrations in their content, ABP Ananda has created tremendous value for the brand to shine and stand out this festive season. It not just creates value for ABP’s viewers but also allows Sunsilk to create a distinct and recognizable voice through the inventive collaboration.  This creative offering has posed a unique opportunity for the beauty & personal care brand to leverage the reach & prominence of the news channel and engage effectively with their audiences at a crucial time when creating brand equity in the market is paramount. This innovative approach to creative integration urged the channel’s viewers to forget the pandemic and partake in the festivities, successfully implementing new-age influencer marketing techniques.

  • CNN’s ‘Reconnect’ explores the culinary map of India

CNN’s ‘Reconnect’ explores the culinary map of India

While the global pandemic has left many unable to travel, an international community of Indian chefs is championing the many tastes of India from afar by bringing the food of their hometowns to some of the world’s finest restaurants. This month, in a 30-minute-special, CNN’s ‘Reconnect’ delves into this rich and diverse nation through the eyes and dishes of India’s culinary pioneers.

For chef Palash Mitra, cooking Bengali fish curry, or macher jhol, is the one thing that never fails to take him back to his hometown of Kolkata. The city is renowned for its colourful festivals including the Durga Puja. This year with festivities forced to go virtual, food became a way for Mitra to celebrate his heritage from afar. In his Michelin-starred restaurant in Hong Kong, he has been serving up Kolkata traditions to a whole new audience.

In a village just outside of the Northern Indian city of Chandigarh, chef Jessi Singh grew up living the true farm to table experience. Singh would milk the buffalo, churn the milk, and spread the ghee on home-baked bread. CNN learns how the now Melbourne-based chef is bringing this fresh philosophy to his family of restaurants, by serving up dishes that pay homage to his relatives and village upbringing.

Chef Garima Arora is the first and only female Indian chef to earn a Michelin star, and was rated Asia’s top female chef in 2019. But beyond her accolades, Arora is also spotlighting India’s uncharted culinary diversity through her non-profit organization, ‘Food Forward India’. Last year, Arora and her team committed to mapping out the cuisine of every state in the country. She started with Telangana, the state she was born in, finding inspiration for several new dishes at her restaurant in Bangkok.

Growing up in Delhi, chef Kuldeep Negi learned his craft from the colourful food and spice stalls of the centuries old Chandni Chowk market. Today, Negi is keeping the essence of Delhi’s bazaars alive at his renowned restaurant in Singapore. One of his best-sellers is tandoori prawns, which celebrates the distinctive smoky flavours of Delhi’s tandoors alongside the fresh ingredients available in his new home.

For chef Deepanker Khosla, mutton biriyani brings back memories of his childhood in the Uttar Pradesh city of Prayagraj. Inspired by his home, Khosla built a sustainable restaurant in the heart of Bangkok. The restaurant farm conserves rainwater to raise hundreds of fish and over 40 varieties of plants. When the pandemic put restaurant dining on pause, Khosla began serving up his signature biryani to 15 different communities each day.
