    NEW DELHI- People across the country are waiting to watch the first game between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings on their television sets or digital screens. Star India is the official broadcaster for IPL across television and digital screens. While Star Sports will telecast the live-action from Dubai on to the television sets across the world, Disney + Hotstar VIP will be streaming the same on the millions of mobile devices. The broadcaster is leaving no stone unturned to promote the tournament.

    The streaming platform Hotstar + Disney VIP has launched a digital campaign #KoiYaarNahiFar to create excitement about IPL 13 that is all set to begin from September 19. The campaign delves into the thought that this year people will not be able to watch the matches with their friends due to Covid2019. However, they can still be together and have all the fun. Disney + Hotstar VIP is allowing the fans to create their own groups where they can watch the matches together while chatting to each other like they used to do it till last year.

    Each ad film shows a fan in different situations. In the first ad, a person is dressed up as a superhero and is excited to meet his friends to watch the IPL match together but is stopped by his partner, who is also dressed in a superhero costume avatar, and tells him its better to watch at home as the outside world is not safe due to the Coronavirus.

    In another video, a young boy is watching an IPL match with the family members, but the continuous disturbances and noises at home make it an unpleasant experience for him. He misses watching the match with his friends.

    Brands are already making a beeline to join the festivities at IPL as it offers huge viewership, high recall, and good engagement with its target audience. Star has claimed that it has already sold 75 per cent of its inventory and brands across categories have expressed interest in the tournament.

    It is expected that the viewership of the tournament on both television and mobile screens will go up.

    Mumbai: The Disney Star India (read: Star Sports sales) team seems to have done it again: breasted the broadcast sponsorship tape for the IPL 2020 in good time, even as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to close many of its deals.

    The roster of sponsors, which was revealed in the first IPL promo look pretty healthy, clearly showing the confidence that brands have in the success of the tournament which is slated to flag off on 19 September in the Dubai International Sports Stadium in the UAE.

    It’s digital first brands, as expected and predicted, that have come on board as co-presenting broadcast sponsors. This includes fantasy sports app Dream 11, online shopping major Amazon, digital payments company PhonePe, and edutech unicorn Byju’s.

    Amongst the associate sponsors figure some old sports backers and some new ones: Cadbury Dairy Milk, Sunfeast, Coca-Cola, Polycab, Rummycircle, Kamla Pasand Masala and  McDowell’s.

    For this year, Star Sports claims to have already sold out 75 per cent of the IPL inventory. There are over 60 advertisers, including FMCG, auto, BFSI, online shopping, edutech, and other new-age brands, for spot buys, PPL shows, and features. Some of the brands in this list include Coca Cola, ITC, Mondelez, P&G, Nestle, Colgate, Britannia, GSK, and Reckitt. Star has also indicated that the number of advertisers and the amount of ad spends is higher than the usual.     The broadcaster reveals that brands from BFSI categories have shown great interest in this season of Dream11 IPL. They are seeing it as a unique combination of festive and a high impact opportunity to engage and influence consumers whose buying behaviour has been disrupted.

    On the programming front, Star Sports has increased its content for pre-shows thus making more inventories available for this popular asset for brands that want to participate in this high impact property during the festive season.

    IPL is the biggest live sporting event happening in the subcontinent after a hiatus of nearly five months. People are keenly awaiting the tournament to begin. It is expected that the viewership of the game will be higher as audiences have sorely missed live sports. As per BARC, currently, TV consumption is higher over pre-Covid2019 times as people are restricted to their homes. The matches, this year start at 7:30 pm and will increase audience availability by more than 20 per cent, as per BARC.

    Over the years, the league has been regarded as the biggest platform reach and engagement for brands as it has continued to set viewership records across demographics year-on-year. The twelfth edition of the league witnessed 613 million viewers (consolidated + PPL + Surround). The broadcaster will continue with its focus on regional channels. IPL 2019 also saw some record-breaking numbers through women viewership. Nearly 175 million women viewers aged 15 years and above watched Vivo IPL across India between 23 March and 12 May 2019. As per the data from the broadcaster, the top 50 shows among women include cricket and IPL dominates primetime with 3.5 per cent leadership margin.

    The other brands that have associated with IPL as sponsors include Dream11, Unacademy, Paytm, CEAT, and Tata Motors. Interestingly, a lot of startups are backing the tournament this year.

    CRED is a well-funded startup that enables its users to pay their credit card bills and helps them earn rewards for it. It was launched in 2018 and has raised several rounds of funding. The app has over 3 million users and offer features such as CRED RentPay, CRED Stash and others.

    The 13th IPL is scheduled to be held in UAE from September 19 to November 10.

    NEW DELHI: Fantasy sports platform Dream11 hit the headlines in early August when its bid of Rs 220 crore for the title sponsorship of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 came out tops, beating back the offers from larger firms. And it polevaulted its founders Harsh Jain and Bhavit Sheth into the limelight once again.

    Set up by the duo in 2008, the Mumbai-based company has more than 80 million users and is the first gaming startup from India to attain unicorn status, an industry term for startups valued above Rs 6,500 crore ($1 billion).

    With an array of top-notch investment firms across the globe, including Kalaari Capital, Multiples Equity, Tencent Holdings and Steadview Capital Management, Dream11 is one of the most stable and thriving start-up ecosystems. Dream11 has expanded its offerings with Fancode, DreamX, Dream Sports Investments, Dream Sports Foundation, DreamSetGo, and DreamPay.  

    According to various media reports, the company spent Rs 785.08 crore on advertising and promotions during FY19, as against Rs 230.30 crore in FY18.

    Speaking at the Internet and Mobile Association of India’s (IAMAI’s) Marketing Conclave on 28 August, Jain explained why he chose to put Dream11’s hat in the IPL title sponsorship ring. "IPL will break all records this year as one billion people stuck at home due to pandemic will definitely watch the sporting event. Our successful associations with IPL in the past gave us courage too,” he said.

    With the Dream11 brand being hammered home all through the tournament, it’s quite likely that an additional few million might chose to download the app and get engaged with the fascinating opportunity to play the skill based matches. Of course, the app would further get embedded into young and old India’s minds.

    During his address, Jain highlighted the need to focus on product development more than on marketing. “I see a lot of products today which use marketing right from the start. I believe it is the wrong thing to do,” he pointed out. “First, you need to develop a product fit for the market and once it is achieved, you should then go for scaling it.”

    Jain explained that in 2008 when IPL was launched in India, it did so without any fantasy games. But today most sports in India cannot be imagined without a fantasy game element. Then there were the naysayers who dissuaded Jain, whose father Anand is a close associate of ace entrepreneur Mukesh Ambani, from foraying into the space when he returned to India after his education in the US.

    "All marketing pundits told us that fantasy games won’t bloom in India and it will be a complete failure, but we succeeded. It was during this time when Sheth (currently serving as a co-founder & COO) joined me in this journey," Harsh elaborated.  

    The initial three years were tough. The company suffered a cash crunch and other obstacles, but what kept them going was their digital agency, Red Digital, which managed social media accounts for  Discovery Networks, Reliance Foundation, and Mumbai Indians to name a few.  By 2012, the company had decided to go ahead with the freemium single match business.

     “Indian consumers don’t like to commit long term to certain products, they like instant gratification and high engagement.Since the time we have focused on organic reach, growth hacking, and targeted digital marketing . We focused on things like virality and getting users to invite their friends,” Jain shared.

    In 2014, the company reported a million registered users, which grew to 45 million in 2018. Last year, the company reported having more than a 80 million user base.

    Jain admitted, "From 2017 we started partnering with leagues and signed Harsha Bhogle as our first brand ambassador. In 2018, we roped in MS Dhoni and started TV advertising for the very first time, and launched the Dimaag Se Dhoni marketing campaign during the IPL 2018 ."  

    Like any other brand, Dream11 faced hurdles in its growth journey, and the biggest challenge was not being available on Google Play store, a hurdle they surmounted.

    “It has been a difficult journey to convince people to download our apps as an APK and answer questions about why we are not on play store. But if people find value, they will find it," Jain said.  

    According to the 2019 report published by the Indian Federation of Sports Gaming (IFSG) and KPMG, the number of fantasy sports operators saw 7x growth during 2016-2018, while the number of users grew by over 25x between June 2016 and February 2019.

    The report also pointed out that the overall revenue of fantasy sports in India saw a three-fold growth from Rs 920 crore in FY19 to Rs 2,470 crore in FY20. As per IFSG-KPMG report, Dream11 commands 90 per cent market share.

    NEW DELHI: Yesterday, the announcement around Fantasy sports platform Dream11 bagging the title sponsorship rights for IPL 2020 made it to news outlet across the world. The fantasy league platform won the right for Rs 222 crore and replaced the Chinese mobile phone brand, Vivo, for a four-and-a-half-month deal. For the record, Vivo this year pulled off the association due to the ongoing Indo-Sino tensions across after the border.

    Dream11 has managed to get the sponsorship title at nearly half the price to what Vivo was paying. Vivo signed the title sponsorship rights with BCCI for five years till 2021 at Rs 2,199 core. The Chinese smartphone brand was paying approximately Rs 440 crore per year to BCCI whereas Dream11 has only spent Rs 222 cr.

    Founded by Jain and Bhavit Sheth, the brand became India’s first gaming unicorn in April 2019. In the last few years, Dream11 has scaled up the brand proposition in the market while creating a niche for itself. The fantasy game app in the last two years has associated with multiple sports platforms like ICC, IPL, and PKL. They have roped in former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the face of the brand that has helped them garner consumers' attention effectively . The brand has expanded its wings with the launch of Fancode and DreamX.

    Good Deal

    Dream11 is already a sponsor to several IPL teams and has grown in leaps and bounds in the recent past.

    Lloyd Mathias, Business Strategist, who was closely involved with cricket sponsorship as the executive VP Marketing of PepsiCo defines the deal a great opportunity to cement itself as the clear leader in fantasy and online gaming. "They now establish themselves firmly on consumers' minds ahead of MyTeam11 and My 11circle and Howzat. This is an opportunity to come in as title sponsor at a 50% discount," mentions Mathias.

    Top of the Mind Recall

    There is no doubt that Dream11 has emerged as the torchbearer of this category in India and has grown in leaps and bounds. From a base of two million users in 2016, fantasy gaming platform has over 90 million users, according to a report by accounting firm KPMG published earlier this year. They have built a strong social media community. Several reports suggest that the brand clocked revenue of Rs 700 cr in FY19.

    The association with IPL will generate a massive reach and exposure of the brand not just across India but beyond the borders also.

    Dentsu One president Harjot Singh Narang defines that the BCCI and Dream 11 coming together is the best way to synergise each other’s reach to make IPL this year really come back with a bang and use this to fulfill marketing and monetisation goals in a market with a pent-up demand. 

    He further added, "For Dream 11 particularly this is their moment to make it big and target catapulting themselves to a national pastime contender with the fantasy sports world. Dream 11 needed a moment in the spotlight for this jump and have aptly invested behind the country’s passion to power that leap just like great brands like Pepsi, CocaCola, Crick Info, etc. 

    Cricket tournaments and IPL, in particular, is the single most visible platform for any brand to gain extensive reach and frequency of exposure with their potential audience in India and Dream 11 will definitely get a solid bang for its buck".

    Dream11’s association with sports has grown over the years and it is presently partnering a total of 19 sporting leagues along with 6 Indian Premier League Franchises.

    Due to the prevailing Covid2019 situation in India, the IPL is happening this year in UAE whereas other marquee global sporting events like the Olympics and Wimbledon have been pushed to 2021. Participating brands will see a huge jump in TV viewership given the total absence of live sporting entertainment in the market over the past 6 months. 

    Mathias mentions that IPL gives huge awareness and adoption. In a span of 50 days a brand can establish itself in consumer minds across a broad demographic. He adds, “They see cricket as the shortest route to grow exponentially – and outpace their competitors.”

    Future Partner

    The one thing which is still not clear is whether or not Vivo will be making a comeback next year? However, there are speculations that BCCI will opt for a fresh bid next year. Even if Vivo doesn’t return, BCCI has decided not to go with the same amount as it is comparatively lower. 

    Since the title sponsorship, this year has been awarded at half price; will this hurt the brand value of IPL in the long run when it will choose a new sponsor next year? 

    Mathias believes that  “as far as the IPL is concerned there is virtually no loss of brand value. The biggest chunk of IPL’s revenues accrues from the STAR TV network who guarantee US $2.55 billion to the BCCI as an official broadcaster – so about US $ 500 million (Rs 3800 cr) a season. The drop in the price of the title sponsorship by half -about Rs 220 cr – is tiny in comparison.”

    It has been widely reported that the educational platform Unacademy and Bjyus were also in the sponsorship race. Unacademy had bid Rs 210 crore while Byju's had bid Rs 125 crore for the same period. Byju’s is the current jersey sponsor of the Indian cricket team. Even Tata Sons too showed interest in bagging the sponsorship rights, but the deal couldn’t take place due to the lower bidding offer. The Indian startup ecosystem is very keen on sports marketing (mainly cricket).

    Havas Media Group MD– India Mohit Joshi states that ed-tech is a sunrise sector currently and has a huge untapped potential in India. “Indian start-up ecosystem has always been associated with impact driving properties – whether it was the jackets in publications or the sponsorships of big-ticket programming in yesteryears. This year, IPL association is one of the biggest impact driving opportunities available, and hence it’s but natural that the Indian start-up ecosystem will be keen to associate with it.”

    However, there is a section of people who have not taken the news of BCCI & Dream11 association in the positive light because the latter has investments from Tencent Holdings, a Chinese investment firm.

    NEW DELHI: Fantasy sports platform Dream11 has bagged the title sponsorship rights of IPL 2020 for Rs 222 crore, as per PTI reports. The fantasy league platform has replaced the Chinese mobile phone brand Vivo for a four-and-a-half-month deal.

    Dream11 has been one of the IPL sponsors for a couple of years now. "Dream11 has won the rights with a bid of Rs 222 crore," IPL Chairman Brijesh Patel told news agencies.

    However, there has been no confirmation from Dream 11, at the time of filing this story.

    Companies like Tata Sons, Unacademy, and Bjyus participated in the bidding process. According to multiple media reports, Unacademy had bid Rs 210 crore, Tata Sons had bid Rs 180 crore and Byju's had bid Rs 125 crore.

    Vivo and BCCI postponed their partnership for one year due to the prevailing Sino-India border stand-off. Under the deal with Vivo, BCCI was receiving Rs 440 crore per year. The IPL will be held from September 19 to November 10 in the UAE this year.

    On August 10, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had sent out invitations to third parties to express their interest (EOI) in acquiring the title sponsorship rights for IPL 2020.

    MUMBAI: Sports tech company Dream Sports will hire over 250 employees this year at a time when job losses and pay cuts are part of the new normal due to the Covid2019 pandemic. Out of this 180 would be for Dream11. The company’s other brands include FanCode and DreamX.

    The company has already hired 80 sportans since January 2020, and continues to look for talents across various levels.

    Dream Sports chief human resources officer Kevin Freitas told Indiantelevision.com that the company is looking for hiring tech-savvy and sports-loving engineers, designers and product managers for all its brands: Dream11, FanCode, and DreamX. “We will be hiring in departments of technology, design and product teams for roles such as SDEs, data scientists, business analysts, product managers and designers, and other functions include finance, legal, HR, and customer service.”

    “We are looking for applicants who are data-obsessed, who will take ownership, and are dedicated to high performance. We want an employee who can put the user first and believe in transparency,” says Freitas.

    Though the vacancies are technology-related, the company seeks candidates who understand and have an interest in sports, but not as requisite eligibility. Currently, Dream Sports has over 350 employees across Dream11, FanCode, and DreamX.

    Indian online gaming revenue to touch Rs 119 bn by 2023

    MUMBAI: The rapid growth in digital infrastructure has led to a supercharged growth of online gaming from Rs 20 billion in FY14 to Rs 44 billion in FY18. The industry is expected to grow by 22 per cent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) by FY23 and reach Rs 119 billion, as per a KPMG Report.

    The Indian Federation of Sports Gaming (IFSG), and KPMG India launched a report on the ‘The Evolving Landscape of Sports Gaming in India’ at its second event – GamePlan 2019. The report provides an overview of the online gaming industry with a focus on fantasy sports and eSports.

    GamePlan 2019 had a session on ‘Future of online sports entertainment in India’ and the panellists were Google India country director sales Vikas Agnihotri, KPMG India partner and head-media and entertainment Girish Menon, Dream11 CEO and co-founder Harsh Jain, Wavemaker CEO south Asia Karthik Sharma and moderated by sports industry expert Gaurav Kapoor.

    Experts believed that the level of engagement is very high when it comes to sports gaming in India. “We have seen 250 million people interact with sports last year and it is expected to reach 350 million this year. During the IPL, the search rates go up by 80 per cent as compared to the previous quarter,” Agnihotri said.

    KPMG conducted a survey on 336 fantasy sports users to understand their preferences and playing patterns. For around 50 per cent of the respondents, the ‘ability to manage teams virtually’, ‘remain connected with the sport’ and ‘utilisation of sports knowledge’ was important motivators for engagement. Out of those 336 users, 71 per cent of the respondents played fantasy cricket followed by 54 per cent playing football. The non-cricket sports leagues in India are also witnessing increasing traction.

    Commenting on the occasion, IFSG president John Loffhagen said, “With the rapidly growing digital infrastructure and emergence of new sports leagues, the Indian online sports gaming industry is witnessing a boom which shows no sign of slowing down. Exponential growth provides users with easy access to a vast variety of sports gaming apps, formats and genres. This could lead to potential confusion and misjudgement among players in choosing the right platform to engage with their favourite sport.

    Due to the growth of digital infrastructure and the emergence of new sports leagues, fantasy sports is witnessing increasing traction in India. The number of fantasy sports operators spiked from 10 in 2016 to 70 in 2018.

    Talking about the engagement of users on Dream11, Jain said, “We had around 95 per cent of our users playing fantasy cricket three years ago and it has come down to 85 per cent. Indian diaspora wants to consume more sports apart from just cricket. Cricket is still growing but other sports are also witnessing exponential growth.”

    “One of the things all of us have to be aware of is that there is still a huge potential keeping the business model, strategy and the approach in mind. When it comes to sports gaming on monetisation, one of the advantages is the ability to build an ecosystem. Typically any online gaming product is largely free or pay and freemium sometimes. The ability to create an ecosystem is because of the high level of user engagement that exists. Those engagements are at a fairly high level of loyalty to their specific club or sport,” Menon said.

    Jain believes that in the next three years cricket engagement will go down to 65 per cent and the remaining part will be from the non-cricketing sports. “The whole industry is waiting for Google to open Google ads for fantasy sports,” he added.
