Message for the members of the fourth estate from the desk of Dr Subhash Chandra

Mumbai: Media is considered the fourth pillar of democracy but faces increasing pressure from the Governing Class, whether the legislature, executive, corporations and more. There are structured attempts by them to align the media to achieve their agenda. Governments exert pressure on media through advertising influence or the use of state machinery to threaten so that the press can be prevented from publishing factual information.

Zee Media’s flagship channel – Zee News, recently faced an alarming incident of  Governmental suppression of the media’s independence. On 23  May 2024 an interview of chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal was conducted by a senior journalist of Zee News.  Post the interview, the independent editorial team at Zee Media decided not to telecast it,  keeping in mind some objectionable content in the interaction. Some portions of the interview

were telecasted as well but the spokesperson of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) kept insisting that  “Zee News must publish the entire interview else it will face consequences like withdrawal of advertising (which was substantial on a monthly basis) by Punjab Government at the least”. I wondered, what else will they do to penalise/prosecute our freedom.

I discovered soon that the Government of Punjab forced a blackout across the state,  leveraging a monopoly of a particular Multiple System Operator (MSO). The blackout was forced, not only for Zee News but also for Zee PHH & Zee Delhi NCR. The state government also extended the blackout of Zee Entertainment channels. To add further AAP withdrew all the spokespersons from participating in debates held by Zee Media’s news channels.  Unfortunately, none of our fellow News networks raised any voice. Zee group neither could provide true news nor it could entertain its loyal viewers of Punjab for a good 8 days.  Zee fought this battle independently and got the channels restored by seeking justice through a legal approach.

This is a real-time and live example of political parties suppressing us as a fourth state. Today it is Zee, while tomorrow it can be any other news channel, news publication or platform.

On 3 May 2024, which is celebrated annually as World Press Freedom Day, I released a video message, expressing my thoughts and views on freedom of the press. This video went viral within a short frame of time. The media fraternity appreciated this step. Most of them were even shocked yet noticed this bold statement of mine. As a result, my office received 54 press interview requests. Hence, I took yet another proactive step and conducted a Media-Meet Press Conference, leading to a constructive round of conversation with the senior members of the media fraternity.

The after-effects of the viral video led to various speculations and the governing class demanded explanation. Zee Media could not only explain the reason (As mentioned above) but added that it was not directed to any particular party or person(s). This step worked in favour of the fourth estate since Zee Media got an assurance from the system that post elections, they will work with/in the new Government and make efforts to improve the ranking of India from the current 159th position amongst 180 nations. I was told that the mentioned rating has been low for two decades and the respective governments did not attend to this issue.

Unfortunately, many of the news channels, newspapers, social media and digital platforms have started accepting the pressure as part of life, instead of resisting or voicing out their disagreement. This is one reason why India ranks 159th out of 180 in terms of press freedom. The natural blame gets inclined towards the Government, but the media itself is equally responsible.

These incidences are not isolated. Various organisations/people in the governing class  (political, bureaucracy, corporations and others with money mussels) have historically employed numerous tactics to suppress media organisations, from leveraging advertising revenue to exerting pressure through corporate avenues and the use of investigating agencies. Despite these challenges, Zee Media’s news channels and platforms have steadfastly upheld its credibility and commitment to public interest journalism.

I not only recognise but also take pride in the importance of a free press in a democratic society and condemn any attempts to stifle journalistic freedom. The governing class has forgotten the defeat of Mrs. Indira Gandhi post-emergency era. One of the major reasons for her own team’s atrocities did not come to light or her notice; was because the same team had suppressed the media. If she knew about those horrific things, she would have never let it happen to people, hence I believe that media’s freedom is essential for the senior/top leadership of the Government of the day. Zee Media’s news channels and platforms will continue to focus on public interest stories, bringing crucial information to the forefront regardless of external pressures.

I would like to reinforce Zee Media’s Commitment towards strengthening the Fourth Estate: Despite these challenges, Zee Media remains committed to delivering unbiased and credible news focused on public interest.

I urge all stakeholders, including our viewers and regulatory bodies, to recognize and stand against these threats to press freedom. Free and independent media is crucial for the health of our beloved Country in terms of its economy, social structure, protection of weaker people in society, reduction of corruption and finally democracy. I and my team are ready to pay a price or face any consequences, to keep fulfilling our ‘Dharma’  towards our readers/viewers.

Zee Media has always aimed to set an example for other media organizations through its work practices and core values. Key pointers that highlight its commitment are as follows:

•Boldly inform about the truth to the government.

•Intensify their focus on public issues, whether or not they are seen as government criticism.

•Utilize their nationwide network to expose any government trying to exert undue pressure,  turning it into a campaign across the country, provided all of us are together.

•Always provide training to journalists on handling pressure and maintaining integrity under duress.

•If necessary, file lawsuits as public interest litigation for violating press freedom and seek legal remedies.

  • Zee’s A Mohan named legal ‘icon’ of the year

Zee’s A Mohan named legal ‘icon’ of the year

MUMBAI: India’s first home grown media conglomerate with presence in over 170 countries Zee Entertainment Enterprises (Zee) now has bagged two prestigious legal awards in the media and entertainment category.

While an award was bestowed on the Zee legal team for the ‘Best Media and Entertainment Legal team for the year 2017-18’, company’s president (legal and regulatory) Avnindra Mohan was declared the ‘Legal Icon of the Year’ at the seventh annual Legal Era Awards 2018. Both the awards were recognition for Mohan and Zee chief legal counsel Viresh Dhaibar’s contributions to the legal-media interplay in general and for having led the company’s legal team to be one of the best in the industry.

The jury consisted of eminent persons from the legal fraternity like former justices of Supreme Court Deepak Verma and AK Patnaik, president of Bar Association of India Dr Lalit Bhasin, solicitor and senior partner at Crawford Bayley & Co. RA Shah and chairman and editor-in-chief of Legal Media Group AK Raizada. The selection was based on weight-age given for quantity of work, diversity, quality delivered and display of business-oriented vision. The jury also looked for clear and specific evidence of teamwork and signs of how the team has found a way to achieve excellence, professionalism and high ethical standards.

Mohan, one of the early entrants to the Subhash Chandra-founded Zee family that was still in its formative stages, was recognised for his legal works and contribution to the broadcasting sector, including dialoguing with the government to formulate India’s viewpoint at international forums on issues like the global broadcasting treaty.

In his post-award address, Mohan said: “In Zee, we do not have a ‘team’, we have a ‘family’. The award is a formal recognition of an informally accepted fact – ‘East or West, Zee family is the best’. We are extraordinary together.”

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, an apex body of chartered accountants, had earlier in January 2018 conferred on Mohan (also a CA and a management graduate) a prestigious award in the category of  ‘CA Distinguished Achiever-2017’ for exceptional performances and achievements.

  • Indians as entrepreneurs can turn limitations into opportunities, says Subhash Chandra

Indians as entrepreneurs can turn limitations into opportunities, says Subhash Chandra

MUMBAI: Be it business or life challenges, learn how to innovate, overcome obstacles and make your business flourish with some help from the expert — a man of a thousand ideas, Dr. Subhash Chandra.

Fresh episodes of India’s popular youth show, Dr. Subhash Chandra (DSC) Show will go on-air from 6 May. Chandra shared his success mantra with students in Mumbai at Whistling Woods International Institute and Prahlad Kakkar School of Branding & Entrepreneurship (PKSBE) for the next episodes of the show.

Kakkar, Dr. A. Velumani, Founder & Chairman of Thyrocare, Beena Sheth Lashkari, Director, Door Step School, Kaustubh Dhargalkar, Innovation Consultant and Pratish Nair, Director & Co-founder of PKSBE are the eminent guests for these episodes.

With a fresh look and format, India’s popular motivational youth show, Dr. Subhash Chandra (DSC) Show is returning to television screens with new episodes that highlight inspirational stories of people from different backgrounds.

After shooting at New Delhi, the next episodes of the DSC Show were held at Whistling Woods and PKSBE in Mumbai. During these episodes, Dr. Chandra, MP, Rajya Sabha & Chairman, Essel Group & ZEE spoke on topics close to his heart – “MBA versus Entrepreneurs, Job-seeker versus Job-creator” and “How is entrepreneurship in creative industries different? What is required to be a successful media and entertainment entrepreneur in 2017?”

A successful entrepreneur himself, Dr. Subhash Chandra expounded his views on “MBA versus Entrepreneurs; Job-seeker versus Job-creator” saying, “India is a country of entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship runs in our blood since we know how to succeed with limited resources, which is the pre-requisite for running a successful business. This behaviour arises in Indians not out of choice but out of requirement; but that is what successful entrepreneurs do, they turn limitations into opportunities.”

Elaborating further, Dr. Chandra said, “For an economy to flourish and be successful, we need both – Entrepreneurs and MBAs, Job-creators and Job-seekers. Neither is better or worse; each path has its own risks and rewards. However, both are essential parts of the system and it is upto each individual to find his or her calling and to strive for perfection. It is a universal truth that if you aim for excellence, you will be successful in whatever you do.”

Sharing insights and examples from his own experience in the Media and Entertainment industry, Dr. Chandra spoke on “Entrepreneurship in Creative Industries” saying, “The Indian Media & Entertainment (M & E) industry stood at Rs. 1,26,200 crores in 2016 as per the FICCI-KPMG Media and Entertainment Report 2017 and is expected to almost double its current size by the year 2020. We can therefore see that there is much opportunity for growth in this industry. To become a successful entrepreneur in the M & E industry or for that matter in any industry, you need to have a strong product on offer which is unique from any other existing product or you need to cater to an audience that has not been tapped before. By experimenting with new and creative offerings, you can keep the interest alive for your audiences, your employees and yourself.”

  • Gadkari unveils Marathi edition of Subhash Chandra’s ‘The Z Factor’

MUMBAI: Maharashtra celebrated the birth anniversary of its most beloved poet Kusumagraj as ‘Marathi Bhaasha Diwas’ on 27 February, 2017. Extending the celebrations, prominent political leaders of the country hailing from Maharashtra came together on 2 March to express their love for Marathi Bhaasha and Maharashtra.

On this auspicious occasion, Essel Group chairman and Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Subhash Chandra released the ‘Marathi Edition’ of his best-selling autobiography ‘The Z Factor – My Journey as the Wrong Man at the Right Time’ as his small contribution towards the Marathi language. The glittering ceremony held at the ITC Grand Central Hotel in Mumbai was graced by eminent politicians including Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping, Govt. of India Nitin Gadkari, CM Devendra Fadnavis, former CM and Rajya Sabha MP Sharad Pawar, and former CM Prithviraj Chavan.

Stalwarts from the Marathi Film & Television industry including Madhur Bhandarkar, Sonali Kulkarni, Manoj Joshi, Sai Tamhankar, Sunil Barve, Mahesh Kothare and Sidharth Jadhav, were also present at the function.

The English edition of Dr. Chandra’s best-selling autobiography was launched by PM Narendra Modi in January 2016 followed, by the launch of the Hindi edition by the Nobel Peace prize recipient Kailash Satyarthi in September 2016. The book has greatly influenced the minds of students and aspiring entrepreneurs across the country, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and ambitions.

Paying a tribute to the city of Mumbai and Marathi culture, Dr. Chandra said, “While Haryana is my ‘janmabhoomi’ (homeland), Mumbai is my ‘karmabhoomi’ (land of work). After living and working in Mumbai for the last 35 years, I feel that I have been accepted as a Maharashtrian. Mumbai is the land of dreams, where like me, millions of people strive to make their dreams come true. At Essel Group, it has always been our endeavour to preserve and promote the true essence of Marathi culture through our various ventures such as Zee Marathi, Zee Talkies, Zee Yuva, Zee 24 Taas and our Marathi films like ‘Natarang’, ‘Fandry, ‘Killa’,‘Lay Bhari’, ‘Natsamrat’ and ‘Sairat’.”

Unveiling the Marathi edition of ‘The Z Factor – My Journey as the Wrong Man at the Right Time’, Gadkari said:

“My association with Subhashji has extended for over 30 years. His most striking feature is that he never hides behind his words. It was on my recommendation that he stepped into the infrastructure sector. However, for one road project, I felt that he would lose Rs. 250 crores, so I recommended him not to continue with that project. He then told me that once I have put my hand into a project, I will see it into completion, whether or not there is any loss. And with this resolve and determination, Dr. Chandra has completed more than 2000 kilometres of road projects in the country over the years.”

Fadnavis said: “Subhash Chandra is a person who has shown us that a common man can do extraordinary work. It is a miracle that Subhashji came to Delhi with only Rs. 17 in his pocket and now he has established such a successful empire.”

Pawar said: “When I read his book, I got to know various aspects of his personality. The most important aspect of his life is that he is never scared of challenges, he faces all the problems with full determination.”

Chavan said: “Subhash Chandra’s life is a direct inspiration. Each youth and Marathi person must read his autobiography. Subhashji left his education mid-way but he never got defeated.”

Even today with his busy schedule, he manages to share his experiences with students and guide them for a better life.”

    From the book:

It was 14 December 1991 when Ashok Kurien of Ambience ad agency and I reached Star TV’s office in Hong Kong. There were 10 to 12 senior and junior executives in the room. Richard Li, head of Star TV, was not there. So we waited awhile. It was like waiting for the king to come in and give his blessings.

Richard walked in suddenly and sat opposite me. ‘OK, Indian channel… Hindi channel. Where is the money in India?’ Richard was very dismissive. ‘I am not interested in a joint venture.’

Most of us in the room, including his executives, were shocked. It appeared that Richard had already made up his mind about the futility of the project.

So I addressed him directly. ‘Mr Li, if you are not interested in the joint venture, can you consider leasing the [satellite] transponder to us?’

‘There is no transponder available for less than $5 million per year,’ Richard said. It was a haughty statement to put me off. ‘That is fine. I will pay $5 million!’ It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. I did not realize the implication of what I had said…

Subhash Chandra files defamation case against Delhi CM

NEW DELHI: Subhash Chandra, Chairman of Essel Group and Zee, has filed a criminal defamation case in a Delhi court last week against Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The plea, filed in Patiala House Court, said that while addressing a press conference on 11 November, 2016 — four days after PM Modi announced demonetisation of Rs 500 and 1000 notes to arrest the rising menace of black money — Kejriwal made “false, fabricated and defamatory allegations” against Chandra alluding that he had amassed black money.

According to the complaint, the Delhi Chief Minister had “defamed the complainant (Chandra) by making inherently defamatory statements and caused serious harm to his reputation by imputing behaviour incompatible with proper conduct and suggestions of involvement in illegal activity.”

Kejriwal had been slapped with a similar complaint in Delhi High Court by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who had said that allegations were made against him without any basis and which amounted to character assassination.“There are many decisions in life that you don’t want to take initially, but you’re left with no other option except that. Personally, I didn’t find any happiness in doing what I have done; in fact it pained me a lot,” in a Facebook post on Sunday Chandra said, adding, “I have had differences of opinion with him (Kejriwal) on numerous occasions but never have I stooped so low and passed any personal remarks on him.”

    public://FullSizeRender.jpg

Sometime back Chandra had created a stir in the media with his support to the government-imposed one-day ban on NDTV India news channel for breaching content code related to national security issues that was subsequently withdrawn. He has also openly favoured the government’s move on demonetisation — criticised by many as an ill-thought and badly implemented move that has hobbled a large swathe of Indians — saying in the long run the initiative would benefit the country.

Pointing out that he had supported the Delhi CM’s various initiatives, including the odd-even number formula to check vehicular pollution in Delhi area when many had ridiculed the move, Chandra said, “I was one amongst the few and the first to have appreciated his move. Not because of any ulterior motive like his, but for the interest of Delhi-ites. Was I having `black money’ even then?”

“What if I say that the Delhi CM had indulged in malpractices to win the Delhi election and he had taken bribe from the Congress Party to contest against Prime Minister Modi in Varanasi and he had paid and hired people to assault him in public and so on. I know all of this is false and so I will never question his integrity and make such personal and baseless remarks. Similarly, what gives him the right to do so?” quipped Chandra, a Member of Parliament of Rajya Sabha or Upper House.

He further went on to ask: “Just because I run a news organization with which he (Kejriwal) is not in good terms or because I, like the whole nation, welcomed the Prime Minister’s demonetization masterstroke or because now I’ve been elected to the Rajya Sabha (public servant), gives him the right to hurl personal abuses?

“And if he or his social media warriors or other AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) cadres, who have always found some pleasure in abusing me, are reading this then I want to humbly tell them that kindly convey it to the Hon’ble Delhi CM who enjoys your support that I never have and never will take any attack on me lightly. It wasn’t an attack just on me but the 10,000 colleagues of mine and the billion hearts and lives that we have touched. Come what may, any further baseless and allegation and remark will be dealt under the provision of law, of which I am a firm believer, unlike the Honourable Chief Minister.”

Chandra’s parting advise to Kejriwal in Hindustani that translates into English as: People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.
