    14th Laadli Media Awards honours 14 South Asia and 42 national gender sensitivity winners

    Mumbai: The Laadli Media & Advertising Awards for gender sensitivity 2024  will recognize 42 stellar contributions in the media, literature, cinema and advertising space across India and 14 journalists from seven South Asian nations on 9  October 2024. The event will happen at the Tata Theatre, NCPA, Mumbai, from 6 pm onwards.

    The Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for gender sensitivity celebrate the media’s role in shaping perceptions towards gender, aiming for a fairer society. Apart from India, the fourth edition of the South Asia Awards covers Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan,  Bangladesh and Maldives.

    These awards are an initiative of Population First, a Mumbai-based social impact organization that has been working for over two decades to promote gender sensitivity in media nationwide.  Following a successful collaboration over the past several years, the initiative is once again being supported by UNFPA. Our collaborating partners for this edition are South Asian Women in Media  (SAWM). We are also joined by NCPA, Madison Outdoor Media, Manifest and Social Samosa as our cause partners.

    UNFPA  executive director Dr Natalia Kanem and renowned actor Ratna Pathak Shah will chair the evening.  

    UNFPA India’s representative Andrea Wojnar, reflected on the significance of the Laadli  Awards, stating, “Laadli, a form of endearment, is now a name that has grown to be recognised as a touchstone for gender sensitivity in media. Laadli has made media and communication  professionals retell their stories from a gender perspective and enabled them to challenge  discriminatory norms and stereotypes in their work.”

    The ex-CEO and current trustee of Population First, Dr A.L. Sharada shared, “These awards are an acknowledgement of the dedication and passion shown by the journalists and content creators in literature, advertising, films, and OTT platforms awarded at the (SALMAAGS). We  hope that such influential, ethical and sensitive journalism will continue in the face of the current  landscape driven by outside influence.”

    Current director Yogesh Pawar said, ” In my 30-year journalism stint I’ve seen a lot of exceptional work but what these awards aim to recognize and celebrate stands out. I feel proud to belong to a fraternity which includes the 10 exceptional awardees nationwide and the 14 South  Asian journalists.”  

    The esteemed Laadli of the Century Award will be presented to Dr Armaity Desai and the Laadli  Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Bachi Karkaria. Hetall Dedhhia will receive the  Laadli Woman Behind the Screen Award, while Advocate Vrinda Grover will be honoured with the  Laadli Gender Champion Award.

    The event will also confer special Laadli awards to mark UNFPA completing 50 years in India.  These awardees include Dr Harjant Gill for Gender and Masculinity, Nidhi Jamwal for Gender &  Climate Solutions, Sheilu Sreenivasan for Gender & Ageing, Paromita Vohra for Gender & Youth  Power Unleashed, Anita Gurumurthy for Gender & Technology, and Bishakha Datta for Bodily  Autonomy.

    This year’s Film Awards for Gender Sensitivity will celebrate Kaathal – The Core, Laapataa Ladies,  and All We Imagine as Light. The web series Taali will also be recognised for its gender-sensitive narrative.

    The event will also feature a special performance of Sufi Kalaam | Songs of women by Radhika  Sood Nayak, Neil Mukherjee, and Vinayak Netke, adding a captivating musical dimension.

    The event promises to be a celebration of those who champion gender equality and drive meaningful change.

    MUMBAI: Population First, the communication and advocacy initiative working towards gender sensitivity, today launched the 8th edition of the Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity (LMAAGS) 2015-16 in partnership with Colors These awards recognize and celebrate the efforts of the media and advertising community to promote gender sensitivity in India.

    The MoU signed with Colors as the exclusive Cause Partners is in keeping with the channel’s vision to highlight a woman’s strength and gumption in the society-at-large. The last date for receiving entries is 15th December 2016, and the awards will be announced soon thereafter.

    Colors CEO Raj Nayak said, “Gender equality and empowerment are tangible issues faced by the Indian population today. As we steadily move towards adopting Western cultural themes, there is a section of the media and advertising industry that is working diligently towards rehabilitation of various strata in our society.”

    According to Population First director Dr. A. L.Sharada, “From a mere 100 entries in 2007 to more than 1500 entries in 2015, Laadli Media Awards have come a long way in acknowledging the media’s contribution in women empowerment and gender issues. The increasing volume of discussion in public domain on gender issues is an indication that we are witnessing the beginnings of change.”

    The Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity have been instituted to acknowledge, highlight and celebrate the commendable efforts undertaken by Print and Electronic media (TV, Radio and Web) and Advertising Agencies, to promote gender sensitivity as an integral part of their work.

    Criteria for Eligibility:

    An entry to the Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity should emphasize or highlight one or more of the following:

    • Analyze policies, programs and laws from a gender perspective

    • Highlight influence of gender perceptions on the functioning of police, judiciary, administrators and other service providers in the implementation of laws and programs

    • Challenge gender stereo-types by focusing on men and women who are redefining their gender equations e.g. changing work participation patterns of men and women, changing work distribution at home between men and women, etc.

    • Analyze the social, religious and economic factors that promote gender inequality and gender violence

    • Report on current events from a gender perspective e.g.: disasters, communal riots, elections, sports events, etc.

    • Create awareness about pre-birth sex selection and other acts of gender discrimination and violence

    • Interpret research and other reports/documents from a gender perspective e.g. census, economic survey, budgets etc.

    • Voice the experiences of survivors of gender violence

    Entries Are Invited from:

    1) Advertising: Single Advertisements and Campaigns for Print/ TV /Radio /OOH/ Digital/ Direct Mail under the categories of Services, Products and Public Services
    Categories:

    Single Advertisements and Campaigns (Though entries are invited at Regional level the Awards are given at National level)

    2) Print Media:From journalists writing for Newspapers and Periodicals in the individual category and Media Houses undertaking media campaigns on gender issues in the group category

    Laadli,a term of endearment meaning ‘cherished daughter’ in Hindi, is a campaign by Population First, a Mumbai-based NGO is a communications and advocacy initiative for a balanced, planned and stable population. Laadli is a comprehensive communication campaign aiming to promote a positive image of women and girls in society by changing the stereotypical mindsets that undervalue women. Laadli Campaign works with communities, colleges and media towards breaking gender barriers and bringing about gender equality in society. Laadli media advocacy includes a number of activities viz., Media fellowships, gender sensitization workshops for working and student journalists, interactive sessions with Creative Directors of TV Channels, Ad analysis with advertising professionals.

    NDTV and Vedanta announce the launch of a unique initiative Our Girls Our Pride

    New Delhi, NDTV and Vedanta today announced the launch of their unique initiative ‘NDTV Vedanta OurGirls Our Pride’, a first of its kind national movement to create awareness about issues related to the girl child, at an event held at The Leela, Chankayapuri, New Delhi. The key issues that the campaign will focus on are Nutrition, Education, Health, Foeticide and Infanticide.

    Priyanka Chopra was named the brand ambassador for the campaign. UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador for India, Priyanka has been actively involved in various causes related to the girl child for many years. She has also personally supported this cause through the ‘Priyanka Chopra Foundation for Health and Education’, which works towards providing support to unprivileged girls across the country in the areas Education and Health.

    To launch the initiative, Campaign Ambassador, Priyanka Chopra joined Dr Prannoy Roy, Cochairperson, NDTV and Mr. Anil Agarwal, Chairman, Vedanta in the capital. Also present at the launch were Dr A L Sharada, Programme Director, Population First, Ms. Neelam Singh, NGO Vatsalya, UP, Ms. Deepak Kalra, Chairperson for Child Rights Protection Committee in Rajasthan amongst many others.

    Addressing the gathering via a live-link, the Hon’ble Minister for Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath said, “We should respect women in our society because both men and women are equal partners to bring out our society forward. According to our Constitution, we have equal rights, so we enjoy equal rights as men and women.”

    On being introduced as Campaign Ambassador, Priyanka Chopra, said, “The upliftment of the girl child in India has been a cause that is very close to my heart. In my role as UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador and through my experience with my personal foundation, I understand that while there have been some positive strides being made every day, there is still a serious amount of work that is still left to be done.I am honoured to be a part of NDTV – Vedanta Our Girls Our Pride, which is a wonderful initiative. NDTV has pioneered several successful campaigns in the past, creating a positive change in the lives of many. My personal experience with NDTV on the Greenathon over many successful years gives me the belief that together we can work towards making a sustainable change. With this initiative we aim to change the lives of many girls and provide them with basic necessities to be able to lead a quality life. I’m looking forward to creating a successful campaign that will give everyone an opportunity to come together in making a better and brighter India for our young girls.”

    NDTV has always played an instrumental role in creating awareness about various issues existing in the country through diverse, path breaking initiatives such as Save Our Tigers, Support My School, Marks for Sports and the Greenathon amongst others.

    Vedanta has taken forward a mission to make India a Child Malnourished free nation and thereby since 2008, the Group has taken care of over 14,000 Anganwadi centres reaching out to more than 500,000 children with a special focus on girl child. 8 Hi-tech Mid Day Meal Kitchens have been set up, providing hot nutritious meal to over 250,000 rural students. Many rural schools have been adopted for strengthening the quality of education and infrastructure. The Group has also taken up the initiative which has transformed 14,900 women into Rural Entrepreneurs through Self Help Groups. Beside, having specialized health camps, the Grouphas a Heart Hospital in Rajasthan and is constructing a 350 bedded Vedanta Cancer Hospital & Research Centre in Raipur which is near completion.

    ‘NDTV-Vedanta Our Girls Our Pride’ is yet another attempt to make a noteworthydifference in our world. Apart from sensitizing the masses, the campaign also aims to raisefunds to make a positive impact in the lives of as many girls as possible. Vedanta, through its “Khushi” campaign, has joined hands with NDTV in creating awareness towards care for the underprivileged children with focus on their health, nutrition, education and overall development.To drive momentum for the cause, NDTV will also create dynamic partners in government departments, NGOs, schools and private organisations.

     


    On this occasion, Mr. Anil Agarwal, Chairman, Vedanta Group, said “Vedanta is committed to partner with all stakeholders, especially community, for a holistic development of India.
