  • Going FTA suits most broadcasters and advertisers

Going FTA suits most broadcasters and advertisers

MUMBAI: With increasing number of channels in the country, much of the interior towns have found solace in having free-to-air (FTA) channels. Doordarshan’s own Direct to Home (DTH) service Freedish has found 12 million active subscribers in the interior parts of the country with its list of FTA channels.

Discussing the FTA market were MCCS India CEO Ashok Venkatramani, TAM Media Research LV Krishnan, Zee Entertainment Enterprises chief content and creative officer Bharat Ranga, Reliance Broadcast Network Limited (RBNL) CEO Tarun Katial and RK Swamy Media group senior VP K Satyanarayana. The session was moderated by Chrome Data Analytics and Media Pankaj Krishna.

Krishna started off by asking Satyanarayana if advertisers are monetising the platform to which he said that Freedish has very few satellite channels and it is not necessary to look at FTA channels particularly for media planning. However, he stated that research shows that Freedish is able to add 10 per cent incremental reach so it has more monetisation scope.

Venkatramani heads three channels under the ABP brand name which hasn’t yet gone pay and in fact isn’t available on Freedish either. He said, “We haven’t gone pay because the ecosystem doesn’t allow us to do so. The price at which we sell channels to MSOs is not in our hands. Freedish is too expensive and cost per household is Rs 30.” FTA channels depend heavily on advertising revenue and according to Venkatramani, this is not sustainable and he doesn’t see any incremental reach happening in the news genre.

Krishna questioned LV Krishnan on how TAM ensured fair representation from houses which were either metre dark or power dark. To which Krishnan said that the important metric is to see who the consumer is. “Is this consumer accepting FTA channels because he is economically unable to graduate to pay? What is the value of this customer for targeting advertising? And is it financially viable to create content especially for this industry?” he questioned. The positive points of this market, according to him, is that this audience doesn’t have any distraction and so time available for entertainment is higher than urban audiences. But the issue they face is frequent power cuts.

Katial said that in its studies, RBNL has found that the northern market is less penetrated as compared to south or east but it needs a unique distribution for which Freedish fits perfectly. “Many advertisers will pay the delta for it whether it is FMCG or Telecom. Metros are fragmented while these markets have low penetration,” he said.

Zee Anmol is Zee’s FTA channel that shows handpicked content from its channels. Ranga pointed out that a lot of marketwise and platform-wise research is done before deciding which content from its flagship channel Zee TV will work for this audience rather than just replicating the entire set of shows. He also feels that in future there will be three modes- FTA, pay and premium and soon Freedish will also offer pay channels. “Distribution will be far more competitive in the next 10 years. Currently, there isn’t much difference between FTA and Rs 200 for all channels. In future the gap will be large,” he said adding that he expects average revenue per user (ARPU) to rise up to Rs 1500 to Rs 2000.

While geotargetted advertising is on the rise, Katial feels that is it more suitable for large MSOs and Freedish can’t do it. But the real winning situation will be when the ad cap regulation is resolved. “Today a radio station in Mumbai takes more ad rate than a national news channel,” he informed.

Ranga said that when a new channel enters the market it can start off as FTA and then convert to pay, which is what Zee does. Krishnan highlighted that the audience doesn’t care about platform but about content. This was emphasised by Satyanarayana as well that the advertisers look at the audience and not the platform. FTA is not actually FTA, because the customer is paying money for the carrier’s bandwidth. In the future, advertising will be aligned either to content, such as in-branding or to the carrier.

Katial shared the data that across Europe, there is the phenomenon of cord cutting at the rate of 5-10 per cent every month and every year and then going FTA.

Krishnan shared data that according to their research, while five years ago 4.5 to 5 members of a home were watching at the same time, this has dropped to 3.8 today. However, the repeat gets about 1.5 members. “Broadcasters have started segmenting by ensuring repeats to cater to various age groups,” he informed.

So while the FTA market has begun in India, it remains to be seen where it will finally head.

  • DD to telecast unique series on film making contest on Millennium Goals

DD to telecast unique series on film making contest on Millennium Goals

NEW DELHI: Public service broadcaster Doordarshan is launching a unique reality series: ‘Chance of a Lifetime,’ from this Friday that aims to not only highlight little-known talent but also raise issues concerning people.

The show will be telecast every Friday from 29 August at 9.00 pm.

A senior officer from Doordarshan said, “As far as DD choosing this show, it was liked because of the unique concept and high production value, and because of the involvement of Hollywood director Ashok Amritraj, and something that has immense appeal for the youngsters. DD always prefers anything that is out of the box especially in the non-fiction category. ‘Chance of a Lifetime’ has a unique concept that has not been explored by many GEC channels.”

The series is a reality show based on a filmmaking contest amongst handful of creative youngsters. The show is produced and hosted by renowned Indian sports personality Ashok Amritraj who is now a popular Hollywood producer and director.

The show is divided into seven episodes and each episode carries a public service announcement on the United Nation’s Millennium Goals made by famous names in entertainment and Hollywood such as Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonders and Antonio Bendaras.

The known names in the Indian film industry like Santosh Sivan, Nagesh Kukoonor, Anubhav Sinha and Ketan Mehta are the judges evaluating the films made by the contestants in the show. Each movie is evaluated critically and only one 10-minute film on “Universal Education” will be selected for final screening in the presence of UN officials and later in the Cannes Film Festival.

For the show, filmmakers have been selected from India, Singapore and United Arab Emirates and divided into four teams. Each team is expected to make movies on UN global issues such as AIDS, Migration, Poverty, Universal Education and Economic Development. At the end of each episode, one Hollywood personality will make a public service announcement.

In collaboration with the world famous Variety Magazine, the winning film which is much appreciated by UN Headquarters and the officials gets the chance to be a part of Cannes Film Festival.

‘Chance of a Lifetime’ not only explores the idea of tapping the creativity of film making in young minds, but also encourages them to think and create through provoking films on global issues that need to be heard and understood.

  • Prasar Bharati’s channel of autonomy

    Prasar Bharati’s channel of autonomy

Seldom have government ventures succeeded in democratic India for variety of beliefs and prejudices.  Inherent security has ensured complacency in government servants with invisible accountability resulting in almost every public sector unit crashing gradually but also becoming liability to the exchequer.

Such ailing commercial initiatives are numerous like Air India, IDPL and HMT to name a few.  As for pure government, the performance is not even measured to stem the existing rot.  The nation coughs up large sums on salaries to maintain archaic British systems founded on in fructuous and dilatory work culture.

Doordarshan and AIR, the once monopolistic moghuls of video and audio arms of Information & Broadcasting Ministry, with 48000 staff and huge infrastructure as part of Prasar Bharati are under siege from the commercial private channels. The staff is till date government employees on deemed deputation status with no powers to Prasar Bharati to infuse fresh blood or promote them in the last two decades of its existence resulting in a chaotic work force with rock bottom morale with no regulation of conditions of service for employees. Most programmers of Prasar Bharati have long forgotten to produce quality content, the cadre having been decimated over the years and the engineering cadre too losing sheen with administrative impediments and faulty staff pattern, with 1:10 teeth-to-tail ratio.

As of today, Prasar Bharati must be the only government funded organisation with 25 cutting edge vacancies of Additional Director Generals out of 33 and 148 Deputy Director Generals out of 151 in the programme cadre creating a painful vacuum of leadership that is meant for content creation leaving the reign of DD and AIR Kendras to lower officials or to broadcast engineers by default.  Though well intentioned, Prasar Bharati, the national public service broadcaster, remains a still born child even today with shadow of government continuing despite an Act of Parliament that envisaged emergence of a BBC like institution to educate, inform and entertain people of India and Indian origin abroad.

Successive governments could not correct the infirmity due to inflexible approach and archaic regulations providing a sure recipe for self-destruction and resulting in natural downfall in TV ratings and Doordarshan seriously lacking audience connect.  While talking of arm’s length in governing, Prasar Bharati, the successive government’s depicted its autonomy as an oxymoron which never exists in real life.

But for the first time ever, after taking over, Minister of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) said, “My aim was to make Doordarshan and state-run All India Radio first choice of viewers.”  Living up to the expectations, the minister has blessed Doordarshan on their maiden effort to reach Indian diaspora through Deutsche Welle, Germany’s Public Service Broadcaster, by riding DD India, the international channel on its Hotbird 13B satellite with the reciprocal arrangement of showing each other’s channel in their bouquets in DTH platform.

‘Hotbird’ has a total of whopping 1117 free-to-air TV channels with 124 English language channels to include BBC, CNN, CCTV, France 24, EuroNews, Al-Jazeera to name a few.  This satellite being the most chosen one by European countries because of its polarisiation and technical reach of 120 million TV homes in Europe, North Africa and Middle East, Prasar Bharati undoubtedly could not have got a better opportunity.

Being a public broadcaster, Prasar Bharati cannot compare itself with other commercially driven private channels of India as far as telecasting current Indian views and heralding the cause of fine arts showcasing heritage of India and cultural diversity through vibrant content being planned for ‘DD India’.

Government of India was spending to the tune of Rs 24 crore-Rs 30 crore per annum since 1995 to 2011 by hiring transponder of ‘PanAmsat’ later ‘IntelSat’ without last mile connectivity and insignificant viewership. Kudos to Jawhar Sircar and team that has ensured Doordarshan reaches to 120 million viewers across the globe to witness India as it dawns through a new image Doordarshan.

Countries like Japan, China, Russia and France spend between Rs 4000 and Rs 8000 crore per annum to ensure global reach for their international channels. Prasar Bharati on its part strongly aims at a content strategy considering cultural and other sensitivities of countries that would receive Doordarshan transmission with closer cooperation with Ministries of External Affairs and Overseas Indian Affairs as it rides on its maiden success in recent times truly blessed by the new government.

For Prasar Bharati, light seems to be at the end of the tunnel with our new Minister and his practical positivity.  “Faith is the promise of tomorrow.”

Media offices turn tricolour for Independence Day 2014

MUMBAI: The country is gearing up to celebrate India’s 68th Independence Day. The patriotic fervor is in the air. Everything from channels to radio stations, newspapers, magazines and even the digital space have donned the colours of the tricolor.

With every individual busy with their hectic lives, Independence Day is the only day where people across the country come together to celebrate regardless of their caste, creed or religion. As the I-Day nears, Indiantelevision.com takes a look at how different media organisations are celebrating this day at their offices.

    Doordarshan Mumbai

    * The pubcaster Doordarshan’s Mumbai Kenra led by its head Mukesh Sharma  has decided to throw a special Independence Day  eve dinner for a select group of invitees from the cities glitterati and bring in Independence Day, reminding Indians of another generation of what happened when India attained independence on 15 August 1947. A flag hoisting ceremony will follow in the morning on 15 August followed by breakfast.

    Zee News

    * Coming up with an innovative exercise for the I-day, Zee News is launching a campaign ‘My Earth My Duty’, under which symbolic plantation will be done at its office and also at locations like Wagah Border, Lucknow, Udhampur and Delhi. The company is also toying with the idea of flag hoisting and is thinking of initiating a drive towards waste management at home. If it can, it plans to bring in an expert who will speak to the company team and their families about waste composting and waste conversion to manure depending on the expert’s availability. They are also trying to distribute small Bundi packets to remind the employees about childhood days in the school.

  • IIS rules amended for a principal DG position in six media units of I&B Ministry

IIS rules amended for a principal DG position in six media units of I&B Ministry

NEW DELHI: Seven posts in six media units of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry will be headed by officials of the rank of principal director general, though only one will be in the higher grade and the others will be in the selection grade.

Although it has still not made any official announcement about changes made in the top posts of some its media units including the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the Ministry has now placed on its website a copy of the Indian Information Service (Group A) amendment rules 2014 as notified in the official gazette late last month.

According to the amendments, one post in each of the six media units – news services division of All India Radio (AIR), director general of Doordarshan, the Registrar of Newspapers in India, the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity, Directorate of Field Publicity, and two posts in the Press Information Bureau (PIB) will be held by principal director generals.

The designation of the incumbent holding the higher grade will be principal director general and it will remain unchanged irrespective of the media unit, except in the Registrar of Newspapers of India where the post will be designated as press registrar.

The insertion of the amended rules comes within two days of the announcement of Neelam Kapur, who had been holding the post of principal director general of media and communication of the PIB, being shifted to the directorate of field publicity and being replaced by Frank Noronha who had been posted in DFP. In another significant change, Archana Dutta who is director general of news in AIR was given additional charge of DD News, whose head SM Khan was placed on compulsory wait.

The amendment also detailed the necessary changes that were being made in the rules of 2013.

Highly placed sources had told indiantelevision.com that while Kapur has not been demoted as she retains her position as principal DG which is of secretary level; the DFP is seen as an office lower in stature to that of PIB, as the head of that office serves as the official spokesperson of the government.
