Goa Governor applauds training undergone by women TV artistes

NEW DELHI: Goa Governor Mridula Sinha, while lauding women who have joined the police or the armed forces, said she was amazed to see the kind of training actresses had to undergo when emulating those who guard the borders.

The Governor was speaking at a function held to mark more than 80 episodes Doordarshan’s serial Ek Lakshay, which is the story of three women who decide, while still in college, to join the army. The three artistes had to undergo rigorous before being selected for the roles.

Sinha felt there was need for more programmes of this nature. At the same time, she said parents should give full support to daughters who wanted to take to the armed forces and not to shirk entering fields, which had been hitherto known as in the male domain.

She stressed that ancient mythology as well as folk tales showed that women had always shown their bravery in times of crisis. In her own case, she said her father had always backed her when she wanted to try out something new.

Ek Lakshay is aired from Monday to Friday from 2.30 pm and the entire week’s episodes are then repeated on Saturday morning on Doordarshan.

At the same time, she said it was necessary to create a social environment that looked upon the woman as a professional and not someone who could be treated lightly or subjected to inhuman behaviour. Women therefore also needed protection along with inspiration.

Deepika Chaudhary, a senior Naval officer, who had helped Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurl the national Tricolour on the ramparts of Red Fort, said it was most important that parents allowed their daughters to study and not stay at home under the pretext that all they had to do was get married and look after the home and bear children.

Producer Karan Anand, who is a known actor for many films including the popular thriller Baby, said he had embarked upon this series because he wanted to make a programme to inspire women to take to newer fields.

Others present at the press meet included artistes Geetanjali Mishra, Priyanka Joshi, and Neha Thakur, who all related the rigorous training they had to undergo along with professionals in the armed forces for the series.

Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley said, “No such proposal is under consideration of the Ministry.”

The previous government had not only drawn up plans for such legislation but placed it on the Ministry website. In fact, a draft of the proposed Broadcasting Services Regulation Bill 2007 – which was a revised version of the proposed legislation of 2006 – is still on the website.

  • MIB does not keep record of non-carriage of mandatory channels: Jaitley

MIB does not keep record of non-carriage of mandatory channels: Jaitley

NEW DELHI: While multi-system operators (MSOs) and direct-to-home (DTH) operators are expected to mandatorily carry a total of 24 Doordarshan channels in digital addressable system (DAS) areas, the number of channels to be carried in the non-DAS areas is 10.

The channels to be carried by DAS and non-DAS areas includes Gyan Darshan, which is currently off-air but Doordarshan sources tell Indiantelevision.com that some arrangement was being worked out to re-start the channel run by the Indira Gandhi National Open University.

The channels to be carried in the DAS areas include 22 DD channels including DD National, DD Bharati, DD News, DD India, DD Sports, and Kisan Channel. The other DD channels are language channels. Other than DD, the channels for DAS areas are Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha TV, and Gyan Darshan.

The channels to be carried in non-DAS areas are:  DD National, DD News, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha TV, DD Sports, DD Urdu, DD Bharati, Kisan Channel, Gyan Darshan, and one regional language of Doordarshan channel of the State in which the cable operator is located.

The Government has also listed a schedule of channels to be carried mandatorily by operators including local cable operators in the 35 states and union territories.

Notifications were issued in this regard in September 2013 and again on 25 May this year.

Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister Arun Jaitley told Parliament that his Ministry does not have any record of such complaints received as the authorised officers – district magistrate, or a sub-divisional magistrate, or a Commissioner of Police within his local limits of jurisdiction – have powers to take action for non-carriage of the mandatory channels by cable operators on their networks under Section 11 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act 1995.

An advisory was also issued in June when it was brought to the notice of the Ministry that a few MSOs were not carrying some of the mandatory channels. It was clarified that non-carriage of these channels shall attract action /punishment under Sections 11and l8 of the Cable Act. Earlier, the Ministry had written to all concerned registered MSOs for DAS notified areas to carry the mandatory channels on their networks.

  • Doordarshan partners SBI to launch payment gateway for ad agencies

Doordarshan partners SBI to launch payment gateway for ad agencies

NEW DELHI: In a pioneering move, Doordarshan today became the first Indian television channel to introduce an online payment gateway for advertisers that will ensure greater efficiency and transparency.

Under the system, each advertiser dealing with Doordarshan will have its own page through which it will not only be able to know its status of payments but also make these payments.

Although set up in collaboration with the State Bank of India, the system permits advertisers to transfer the payments through their own banks using the gateway.

Doordarshan automated its commercial operations for DD National channel in the Phase-I in January this year. The process for DD’s other channels is under implementation. The move has helped integrate various steps involved in executing commercials from booking to scheduling and billing.

However, the last step of payment receipt is still manual. Doordarshan has integrated the payment gateway and with its traffic and billing system would facilitate all clients and agencies to make online payment by directly going to Doordarshan’s portal from the place of their convenience at any time of the day.

The new system was inaugurated today by Prasar Bharati member (finance) Rajeev Singh in the presence of DD director general C Lalrosanga, Engineer-in-Chief CBS Maurya, ADG (CRD) Mukesh Sharma, ADG (commercial & sales) Inderjeet Kaur, ADG Deepa Chandra, ADG PA Naidu, and DDG (commercial) CK Jain, who also explained the system along with State Bank of India main branch chief manager (e-banking) DN Sharma.

Jain said the first phase would cover Delhi and Mumbai, whereas the second phase will cover other centres. It will also facilitate an Online Deal and Release Order Booking System (ODROBS).

Sharma said the multi-operating payment system could be used for sending payments from other banks as well. Each ad agency would have a name and password to log on through the DD portal and then go on with checking status or making payments. This facilitates collection of fees from ad agencies and is completely automated with options of NEFT, RTGS, and draft with provision for updating etc.

Doordarshan has so far been facing huge problem of reconciling its accounts because of entire manual operations, which leave a lot of agencies and clients dissatisfied. This has also resulted in several disputes and also in arbitrations with agencies.

It was pointed out on the occasion that Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar has also been emphasising on use of IT in both Doordarshan and AIR for bringing efficiency into the system.
