SABe TV turns 2 on 23 April; launching new shows on DD Metro, Udaya

Three new dailies from the Sri Adhikari Brothers stable will start beaming on Doordarshan Metro beginning 30 April. A bi-weekly thriller, produced by SABTNL, will start beaming on Sun TV’s Kannada language channel Udaya TV at the same time.

The new shows are part of the SABTNL’s plan to supply an additional six hours of programming per week to Doordarshan and increase the total programming hours on DD to nearly 14 hours per week. SABTNL has currently been supplying content for nearly seven hours per week to DD and its regional channels.

The three new dailies on DD Metro include two thrillers, Hello Inspector and The Trap. While Hello Inspector will consist of one off episodes focusing on the world of crime, The Trap will be a continuous story. Kunti, a woman oriented soap, goes on air around the same time. All half hour daily shows, they will be beamed during DD Metro’s prime time, says SABTNL chairman Gautam Adhikari. Both The Trap and Hello Inspector star Ravi Krishan in the lead role, while actress Deepshikha plays the female lead in The Trap. SABTNL has opted for a new face as the lead of Kunti, though.

The channel that turns two on 23 April, is beefing up its own programming with a daily supernatural soap. Directed by Adhikari himself, the serial will be telecast Mondays to Thursdays at 8:30 pm. A daily comedy, to be directed by Kanchan Adhikari, will also take off shortly.

The supply of fresh software to the pubcaster follows DD’s decision to reduce its telecasting fees and waive the compulsory spot buy schemes. The company can expect to double its revenues from DD alone to touch nearly Rs 600 million by the end of the current fiscal. Suraag, which completes three years on DD National this May, has been among the content provider’s most successful shows, netting TRPs of nearly 10 every week. It was Suraag, says Adhikari, that managed to dethrone mythologicals from the top of the TRP charts for Doordarshan.

Nine Gold, rivals react cautiously to opening of bids for DD Metro

The industry has reacted cautiously to Prasar Bharati’s (Broadcasting Corporation of India) move throwing open bidding for all time slots on its Doordarshan Metro channel.

A senior official from HFCL Nine Broadcasting, which currently holds the rights for the 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm slot, said the company’s managers were looking at the implications of the development, when asked for their reaction to the turn of events. “We are studying the tender document and will consider it accordingly,” the official said.

HFCL Nine’s 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm slot expires in September, while the 10:00 to 11:00 pm one completes its run in October.

“We would have to study the financial implications of the whole thing before we can make any comment,” RK Singh, chief executive (corporate affairs), Zee Telefilms, said, when asked if the DD Metro offer was of interest to Zee.

But a company source said in private that the offer was a “no brainer” if it did not extend beyond three years or so and the broadcaster would not really be interested in pitching for the slots unless more attractive terms were offered.

Star, however, did not completely rule out making a pitch. “We are looking at it (the bid offer),” an official spokesperson said.

Sony Entertainment Television CEO Kunal Dasgupta, while indicating he was adopting a wait and watch stand on the issue, said the Prasar Bharati offer was interesting.”

Prasar Bharati calls for fresh bids on DD Metro, Nine Gold out in the cold

After months of wrangling, Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) yesterday set the wheels in motion throwing open bidding for all time slots on its Doordarshan Metro channel. HFCL Nine Broadcasting currently holds the rights for the 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm slot. The 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm slot expires in September, while the 10:00 to 11:00 pm one completes its run in October.

Obviously, the mandarins in Prasar Bharati have decided that enough was enough with Channel Nine and that they would not give in to pressure from its manager that it had not lived up to commitments of increasing DD penetration and reach in urban cable and satellite homes, re-engineering its transmitter setup and hence extending the contract to a longer term – 10 years at best and 18 months at the worst.

The current bidding process is slated to commence from tomorrow and the tender documents will be available online from the DD site and from its stations from 30 June.

DD has set the following floor prices for the various time slots it is throwing open to wannabe bidders:

If at first you don’t succeed…you try again… DD style

    3 9:00 pm – 10:00 pm 425 600
    4 10:00 pm – 11:00 pm 175 600
    5 11:00 pm – 12:00 am no floor price 600
    6 00:00 am – 00:30 am no floor price 300

DD has said that bidders should be open to an annual increase of 10 per cent for any bids they make. Additionally bidders can bid for individual hourly slots or for the entire band of 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm

The pre-qualification bids will be opened on 18 June while the final bids will be opened on 19 June. Clearly, executives in television channels have a busy month ahead of them.
