  • Growth of influencer marketing in the events industry

Growth of influencer marketing in the events industry

The Indian events industry is currently among the fastest growing sectors in the country. In fact, it is predicted to cross the 10,000 Cr mark by 2020-21. The tremendous growth seen in this lucrative industry can be attributed to several factors, such as digital activation, sports leagues, rural expansion, and Government initiatives followed by IPs, personal events, product launches, expansion of mini-metros, and below the line spend.

The underlying outcome of digital activation has been the growing trend of using influencer marketing as a primary form of promotion, carried out by the event organisers.

For event organisers, influencers can be broadly categorised into 3 types –

    · Mega-Influencers: These are celebrities and popular personalities, who have a huge number of followers. They charge high fees to be associated with the events, and are not necessarily industry experts.

    · Macro-Influencers: These influencers have a high following as well, and are industry experts, who collaborate with various event organisers, on a regular base.

    · Micro-Influencers: These consist of the average person who has a high level of engagement, and hence, are prime influencers who are tapped during events.

Influencer marketing, in a nutshell, can be described as a partnership formed by event organisers and influential industry experts, to increase the event exposure, both online and offline. This new phenomena is a type of marketing which enables organisers to reach out to the targeted niche community, through a research and insight-driven strategy for creating authentic content using the voice of an influencer.

Influencer marketing helps event organisers and the brand in numerous ways, such as:

    · Create Brand Awareness: Influencer marketing is the best tactic to be used, in order to create a buzz around the event, and therefore, reach out to new consumers. Event organisers apply various strategies to create awareness, while the influencers carry out multiple shout-outs about the event which is to take place. They also host giveaway tickets for the events, creating an engagement with the consumer, which is better explained below.

    · Brand Engagement: This goes hand-in-hand with creating brand awareness. The most effective way of understanding whether the influencer marketing has a positive impact involves analysing social media likes, comments, and the use of hashtags. Influencers build a community and engage with old and new consumers, by doing a takeover on pre-event and event days. This helps them become a brand ambassador of the event on the particular day, and offer consumers behind-the-scene glimpses of the event.

    · Consumer Retention: A well-constructed influencer marketing campaign helps an event tap into new consumers. It is extremely important to integrate them into the brand’s consumer-base. Since a large number of events take place every year, consumer retention is of top priority for a brand. Thus, with the help of influencers, it can successfully maintain that link with the consumer base.

The above is a clear indication that influencer marketing is here to stay, and will only move from strength to strength, in the coming years. With event companies pumping in more and more money into marketing, influencer marketing, one of the most sought after marketing tools today, will play a key role for events and brands alike, in the years to come.

  • Non-mainstream sports are acquiring centre-stage in India

Non-mainstream sports are acquiring centre-stage in India

India is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world with a population following a wide range of religions belonging to different communities. However, the one thing that always unites Indians across every social barrier is their love for sports. Cricket, one of the most popular sports in the country, is somewhat of a religion in the country with almost every Indian flocking towards their TV screens for an India – Pakistan match. While cricket has achieved phenomenal success in the country, it has also shadowed the potential of other sports in the country. However, with the growth of the sports industry and increased representation of India in leading international tournaments of these non-mainstream sports, these are emerging as the new favourites among the avid sports fans in the country.

    Football

In a country dominated by cricket lovers, football-only enjoyed little and localized recognition in regions such as Kerala and the North-Eastern states, especially West Bengal, the hub being Kolkata. While the sport is extremely popular and a giant industry internationally, the popularity of the sport in India has only risen in the past decade. While the international football leagues like the English Premier League has always grabbed eyeballs of avid sports fans, India today also has its own national leagues like the India Super League, launched in 2013. Since the league began, studies show that the interest in football in the country has risen from 30 per cent to 45 per cent from 2013-17. An indoor format of the sport, Futsal has also recently been introduced in India. This format, which is already popular internationally, has gained huge popularity in metros specially where spaces and grounds is a constraint.

    Kabaddi

In recent times, the biggest overnight success has been that of Kabaddi as a crowd-favourite. Launched in 2014, Pro Kabaddi League has today evolved to one of the most-watched sports in the country. The rugged sport, originally limited to the rural population, is now the 2nd most-watched sport in the country after cricket. The sport has made its mark as a leading mainstream sport actively competing with football for the second spot.

    Basketball

After the entry of National Basketball Association (NBA) in India in 2017, the sport has received wide acceptance among the Indian audience and is today, slowly gaining traction. This year marks the first-ever NBA tournament which will be a testament to the growth of this non-mainstream sport in the Indian culture. The NBA tournament is expected to be one of the most highly anticipated sports events of the year.

    Cycling

Another non-mainstream sport that has today gained considerable popularity is cycling. While earlier only considered as an activity for the low-income group of people for commute, today, cycling has evolved into an adventure sport of its own. Specialist biking stores have opened up across the country to cater to the growing audience of cycling as a sport. Tournaments such as the Hero MTB Himalaya has been key in putting cycling on the sports pages in the country.

    Badminton

The past decade has been revolutionary for Indian Badminton, especially in light of the success of Indian athletes like Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. The secret to bringing a sport into the forefront in a widely populated country like India is the right representation of it on international fronts. With Indian players making their mark in both the men’s and women’s category of the World’s Top 10 in the world, badminton is today a widely accepted sport. National tournaments like Premier Badminton League is one of the driving forces behind the success of the sport in the mainstream sport section.

    Wrestling

Currently, India has the biggest fanbase of WWE, the world’s biggest wrestling event, after USA. The tournament receives 335 million unique television viewers per year. Closer to home, national-level tournaments like India’s Pro Wrestling League has become one of the biggest sports events of the year. The popularity of wrestling was further fueled by the representation of the sport in leading Bollywood movies like Dangal and Sultan. Such mainstream representation propelled the sport into the limelight more than before and is today, a sport that many in rural regions aspire to be a professional in.

    Poker

While many still find it hard to consider poker as a sport, the popularity of poker tournaments is rapidly rising in the country. Professional poker is not just an abstract concept but a reality in modern India. An industry that is rapidly springing startups in the virtual poker space, the sport is extremely popular, especially among the millennial generation. Studies show that more than 50 lakh Indians today have active online poker accounts. Tournaments like India Poker Championship 2019, World Poker Tour 2019, etc. have allowed poker to turn into a mainstream sport in the country today.

With the globalized and digitized world that we live in, many forgotten sports today are coming into the limelight and receiving more recognition.  Rustic sports like Kho-Kho are also gaining traction with established professional tournaments like Ultimate Kho-Kho arising. The past decade has been witness to almost 16 new sports league emerging in the Indian landscape. With the vast population of India and the varied cultures present, there is a scope for many regional sports to become more prevalent in the industry.

  • Top M&E industry honchos see no major benefit from Budget ’17

Top M&E industry honchos see no major benefit from Budget ’17

MUMBAI: With the Union Budget’s focus on rural and infrastructure sectors, the media and entertainment (M&E) industry seems to be disappointed as the budget does not offer much. Though the sector is hoping to get some benefit through the digital push mentioned in the budget, expectations were high as the budget overlooked the sector even in the previous two budgets.

No clarity on foreign direct investment (FDI) policy, goods and services tax (GST), no further reduction in the service tax, no direct benefit for the digital ecosystem, MSOs, telecom, and many such misses has upset the M&E industry at large.

Impetus on digital payments and transactions will eventually help the OTTs/VoDs platforms subscription model. The government’s move to abolish Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) is believed to make it largely easier for foreign investors to invest in Indian companies.

    Reliance Broadcast Network Limited

Reliance Broadcast Network (RBNL) CEO Tarun Katial said, “Budget 2017 is Neutral for the M&E sector although the consumption centric budget will put more money in the pocket of the common man and hence help the advertising and broadcast industries. Radio broadcast industry has requested specific policy measures like five per cent GST rate, reduction in custom duty for capex, etc and we look forward to the announcements when the GST rates are announced.”

    Mukta Arts

Mukta Arts MD Rahul Puri asserted, “The Union Budget this year has focused more on uplifting some of India’s poorest sections of society. While this year again the media and entertainment sector has been overlooked, however some announcements will definitely help our industry in many ways. Setting up the cyber security teams will help fight piracy, similarly, the government’s push towards Internet penetration in rural markets will help increase content consumption and increase the audience base. Further the abolishment of FIPB will make it easier for foreign investors to invest in Indian companies.”

    Worldwide Media

Worldwide Media CEO Deepak Lamba added, ‘’The Union Budget 2017 announced today, doesn’t include much on the  M&E sector, however there are some points that will have a positive impact on our industry. The budget reinforced India’s huge shift towards digitization especially with the proposed deployment of high optic cables to increase internet penetration in rural India. This is a big positive for content creators like us, as it will boost the digital content consumption across online and mobile platforms. Further impetus on digital payments and transactions will eventually help the subscription model. Also, the government’s move to abolish FIPB to make the inflow of FDI smoother and to consider liberalization of the FDI policy will have a positive impact for players across sectors in the long run.”

    KSS Limited (K Sera Sera)

KSS Limited group CEO and KSS Digital Cinema CEO Rahul Kanani added, “The Union Budget 2017 introduces the abolition of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board which is a positive step leading to inducing more foreign studios investment in India. More investments coupled with technological upgradation will certainly be a boon for the Indian film industry. Further, with the digital transactions getting a boost the industry especially single screen businesses which have suffered hugely because of the recent demonetization will help get a push.”

    Pixel Pictures

Pixel Pictures CEO Prashanti Mallisetti said, “The budget on the onset looks quite positive and is in-line with the recent reforms. Though there are no major takeaways for any industry in particular that can affect a trajectory movement – the curb on cash transactions of 3 Lakhs is the one that is going to be a predominant factor in the demonetization short term scenario. More clarity in GST would have been great, but I guess we have to wait for that a little longer.”

    Dome Entertainment

Dome Entertainment’s Mazhar Nadiadwala added, “GST would be implemented on the entertainment and events industry, and this would unify the indirect tax administration in India and help the country in two ways. Firstly, it will simplify and make it easy for the consumers to understand. Secondly, it will ease doing business in India. Also, application of GST will result into growth of the country and there will be transparency in the transactions. Under GST, service tax or state tax will be available as a credit which will reduce overall costs and eliminate dual levies of service tax and VAT on transactions. However, every coin has two sides, at one end where we have advantages of GST, on the other end certain businesses will face initial challenges, especially the ones who use traditional methods for transactions.”

    ActorsApply.com

An ActorsApply.com spokesperson said, “Government’s proposed reduction in the income tax for smaller organisations will add to the agenda of Startup India thereby expanding the scope for aspiring start ups. Also, the plan to provide a seven-year tax relief will help startups to overcome the losses incurred post demonetisation. The increase in time frame from 5 to 7 years for profit linked deductions was a much needed move specially for emerging start ups. The budget also levelled India’s huge shift towards digitization supporting it with the announcement of use of optic fibre cables for high-speed broadband connectivity in rural areas. This will mean increased Internet penetration through mobile and online mediums thereby boosting the start up sector overall.”
