Dolby Laboratories completes 50 years; charts growth plan

MUMBAI: Dolby Laboratories, which sparked a revolution in sight and sound based on American engineer Ray Dolby’s vision for spectacular entertainment, has completed 50 years.

To support growth, Dolby will be moving to new headquarters at 1275 Market Street in San Francisco where it will continue to shape the sight and sound of entertainment and communications with new technologies like Dolby Cinema, Dolby Vision, Dolby Voice and Dolby Atmos.

The company’s story began in 1965 with the invention of Dolby noise reduction, a breakthrough system, which eliminated the hiss that plagued tape recordings. The company went on to transform cinema, introducing more powerful and immersive sound to forever change the way movies were made and enjoyed. Dolby sound helped bring Star Wars to life in 1977 and created an entire industry devoted to the audio experience.

The company’s latest initiative Dolby Cinema transforms the way people watch movies comprising a premium cinema offering that combines the best in sight and sound with a bold new theatre design, creating an amazing experience for moviegoers.

AMC Theatres and Dolby Laboratories, which recently launched Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime, will be launched in up to 100 sites by 2024, including major cities like San Francisco, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Miami, Boston, Denver and Seattle.

Moreover, revolutionizing displays from movie theaters to TVs, Dolby Vision will see Disney’s Tomorrowland and Disney Pixar’s Inside Out as the first Dolby Vision titles. The first TVs with Dolby Vision are arriving this year from Vizio.

On the other hand, Dolby Voice revolutionizes the conference call and the way people communicate at work by making calls exceptionally clear, natural and productive, like in-person meetings.

Dolby Atmos, which is becoming the sound format of choice for leading filmmakers and device makers is a technology that places and moves specific sounds anywhere in the room, including overhead, to bring entertainment alive all around the audience.

Since its introduction in the cinema in 2012, Dolby Atmos has been embraced by all the major Hollywood studios, 14 Academy Award winning directors, and 27 Academy Award winning sound mixers. Over 1,000 screens worldwide have installed or committed to be equipped with Dolby Atmos and 275+ Dolby Atmos titles have been announced globally.

Additionally, entertainment enthusiasts can now also enjoy Dolby Atmos in their home theaters, on their mobile devices and in virtual reality experiences from Jaunt.

MUMBAI: Dolby Laboratories has launched its latest audio technology, Dolby Atmos, in Bengaluru.

Mukunda Theatre will be the first cinema in the state to offer the new technology to moviegoers starting 24 April, 2015.

Mukunda Theatre managing director G. Venkatesh Reddy said, “We take great pride in being the first ones to bring Dolby Atmos for the cinema to viewers in Bengaluru. It has always been our endeavor to use the latest technologies to provide the best cinematic entertainment experience to our audiences. Dolby Atmos is a major differentiator, providing greater definition and dimension to movies with its unique object-based approach to sound.”

Dolby Laboratories director, field marketing India Ashim Mathur added, “We are very excited to be working with Mukunda Theatre to bring Dolby Atmos to Bengaluru. Dolby Atmos continues to see great momentum in India and across the globe, as the leading next-generation sound format for theatres.”

Unlike traditional channel-based sound systems like 5.1, 7.1, and 11.1, which require filmmakers to think about the number and location of speakers, Dolby Atmos allows them to simply designate where in the cinema space each sound “object” should be placed or moved to make audiences experience the film as if they were within its world.

“The Dolby Cinema experience is a very exciting prospect for both filmmakers and film fans. Dolby has been so vital to the advancement of cinema sound, it makes complete sense for them to turn their attention to enhancing and improving the quality of motion picture images as well. Our team was delighted to collaborate with Dolby, and we are proud thatTomorrowland is the first film to be presented in their stellar new Dolby Vision process. The brightness and clarity of the images, yet with richness and detail in the blacks—WOW. The picture quality, especially in 4K laser projection, is nothing short of stunning,” said Tomorrowland director Brad Bird.

Dolby Cinema features the Dolby Vision projection system, which uses state-of-the-art optics and image processing, to deliver high dynamic range with enhanced color technology and a contrast ratio that far exceeds that of any other image technology on the market today. The result is a richer, more detailed viewing experience that delivers strikingly vivid and realistic images that make viewers feel like they are in the movie’s world. Dolby Cinema also includes the award-winning Dolby sound technology, Dolby Atmos, which moves audio around the theatre, even overhead, with amazing richness and depth. Dolby Atmos debuted in 2012 on Disney Pixar’s Brave.

“Our studio and our filmmakers put so much into creating high-quality, immersive experiences for audiences, and that includes using the latest, cutting-edge technology to enhance the stories we tell. Disney has been a longtime collaborator of Dolby, and we’re excited for the continued storytelling possibilities that technologies like Dolby Cinema deliver,” said The Walt Disney Studios EVP – theatrical distribution Dave Hollis.

  • Emerging technologies create problems for release of new films

Emerging technologies create problems for release of new films

NEW DELHI: Over 350 different versions of Captain America: The Winter Soldier was created in just 17 days, in order to play in all its formats in theatres across the United States and internationally.

Those formats include: 2D, 3D, film and digital. Other variants might include 4D, IMAX, and high frame rate. In the near future, laser light projectors, Dolby Atmos, and Barco Auro will require even further versions of feature films. These can include any combination of 2D, 3D (typically at least two versions at different light levels), possibly Imax and in the case of The Hobbit, a high-frame-rate option. If one has a “4D” release, each of the three 4D companies — CJ 4DPlex, MediaMation and D-Box — require their own proprietary version.

With tight turnaround times, and an ever-increasing number of variables to consider, executives are not seeing an end to this problem, though they are hoping that standards will help alleviate at least some of the workflow.

“Standards will help with some of the chaos,” says an executive. “But we can’t afford to stay static. This is the new normal. We get it done, but it’s not easy. We learn, we get more efficient, and then something new comes along. It’s a cycle.”

With more than 95 per cent of the cinema screens in North America now converted to digital, executives find the situation is getting chaotic.

“Controlled chaos” is how one studio exec (who was not involved with The Winter Soldier) describes the situation as. The reason is that the various options afforded by digital technologies means that multiple versions of a movie are needed. “The number has skyrocketed.”

Several sources confirmed that it is not uncommon for a studio to create roughly 15 different versions of a movie for a domestic release — and some recent tentpoles have exceeded 30 different versions just for North America.

Meanwhile, laser light projectors with the promise of offering brighter images will be made available this year — and that may require another version. Barco’s recently unveiled Escape system (which creates a sort of Cinerama experience) would require another.

Film prints are still needed for the remaining theatres, though domestic distribution of a typical tentpole title to 4,000 screens generally means fewer than 100 film prints are being created. “It’s getting harder because all of this takes time,” admitted one studio executive.
