  • Mindset change: You are not making for a single screen

Mindset change: You are not making for a single screen

MUMBAI: The 9th edition of The Content Hub Summit 2025 may as well have been titled “Adapt or Fade,” as India’s media elite gathered to discuss the changing face and format of storytelling. The consensus? You’re no longer making content for a single screen. You’re building cross-platform universes.

Chaired by Sukesh Motwani, director at Bodhitree Multimedia, the session pulsed with the urgency of a business hurtling through change. It became clear: the future is platform-agnostic, monetisation-hungry, and format-fluid.

Motwani set the tone early: “Fiction’s no longer just about arcs and actors. It’s about vertical shots for Reels, character intros for Shorts, and scenes that snap into memes.” Even directors are now briefed to film key plot points in portrait mode. The narrative may stretch to 90 minutes, but it better look good in 9 seconds too.

Samar Khan, CEO at Juggernaut Productions and chief content officer at DocuBay and EPIC ON, summed it up: “We told a true story as a doc. Platforms bought it as fiction. Now we’re cutting Shorts from it too.” His teams are also repurposing old documentaries into audio formats ideal for the podcasting boom.

Meanwhile, Sunil Chainani, business head of movies at Applause Entertainment, still sees value in a “theatrical first” approach for big releases, but admits the exploitation game has changed. “The music, the score, even classic dialogues, they’re all mini verticals in themselves.”

Veteran producer Kailash Adhikari pointed out that three-decade-old shows from the family vault are still monetising now as memes, clips, and podcast fodder. “YouTube, Facebook, Shorts… legacy content’s like gold dust if you know how to pan for it,” he said. Even policy podcasts, once considered too niche, are finding new life as snackable content with high-value backers.

Hemal A Thakkar of Mariegold Studio spoke about the gaming crossovers for shows like OMG2, predicting a future where Shiva might be both screen hero and playable avatar. “It’s not just shows. We’re building IPs—franchises that stretch into games, VR, and who knows, maybe AI-generated spin-offs.”

Some were sceptical about the vertical video craze. “I’m just doing what everyone’s doing,” Khan admitted. “I don’t know if it’ll last.” But others believe it’s here to stay, especially in genres like horror, where the claustrophobic frame intensifies the scare factor.

A Russian filmmaker’s war epic shot entirely in vertical format was cited as a radical experiment that could become a norm in bite-sized streaming. And songs? Already stylised like Instagram Stories.

The phrase of the day was “multi-screen”, but not just in the literal sense. It’s about thinking across devices, genres, formats and audiences. Whether it’s a 3-hour film, a 30-second short, or a 3-minute podcast, content must be conceived from the start to travel.

As creators wrangle with digital fatigue and the death of appointment viewing, one thing is certain: survival lies in flexibility. From AI-generated music videos to audio-only comedies, every content piece must now be a Swiss army knife.

  • DocuBay announces ‘12 Digit Masterstroke’: An untold insight into India’s Aadhaar revolution

DocuBay announces ‘12 Digit Masterstroke’: An untold insight into India’s Aadhaar revolution

Mumbai: DocuBay, the global streaming service from IN10 Media Network, has announced the release of its latest original, ‘12 Digit Masterstroke – The Untold Story of Aadhaar’ that unravels a behind-the-scenes story of the creation of the world’s largest social identity program, culminating into what is today known as “Aadhaar Card”, crafting a unique identity for over 1.4 billion Indians.

Motivated to highlight topics of national and global importance, DocuBay depicts the untold story of an unlikely team of public and private sector professionals who came together at UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) to design & implement India’s ground-breaking Aadhaar card system. The documentary explores logistical, technological, financial & bureaucratic challenges faced by the team, spearheaded by tech wizard Nandan Nilekani, aiming to achieve something that no one had attempted before in India. Team Aadhaar worked under two governments led by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“While there is a lot of awareness about the remarkable initiatives that have benefited over a billion beneficiaries of various government schemes, through the Aadhaar project, not many people are aware of the gigantic efforts which were required from a team of technocrats led by Nandan Nilekani that executed the project to fruition,” said DocuBay COO Girish Dwibhashyam. “We are thrilled and grateful to have captured this historic story into our DocuBay Orignal film.”

The documentary, narrated by entrepreneur Ankur Warikoo, features UIDAI former CEO Ram Sewak Sharma, an IAS officer, who articulates technology in a ‘Dabang’ way. Ganga Kapavarapu, a tech buff who brought a financial focus to the program. Srikanth Nadhamuni, the ‘tech guru’, introduced a powerful technological armoury for the creation of Aadhar. Shankar Maruwada, ‘Sir Panch’, played a key role in marketing Aadhaar with a small team of four. Pramod Verma the ‘Chief Royal Architect’ of Aadhar sketched the building blocks for the program. Lastly, Ashok Pal Singh modernised the Indian postal system through digitalisation and their stories of overcoming challenges.

“How do you encapsulate a five-year rollercoaster journey into 50 minutes,” said Wide Angle Films founder and CEO Sujata Kulshreshtha, on the challenges faced during research that underwent to produce the film. She added, “We had to overcome the challenges like lack of archival material from the period of execution and to get access to the key members of the team. Our team did in-depth research, even before we formulated the narrative as the documentary brings this incredible ‘made-in-India’ story to viewers.”

Today in India, with the introduction of UIDAI’s Aadhaar system, transformation has been enabled across 600,000 plus villages and 400 plus cities in India as the unique biometric secure number has become the bedrock for multiple government schemes. From enabling financial inclusion to powering direct benefit transfer schemes, Aadhaar has reshaped lives, earning international recognition as a model for digital identity systems.

‘12 Digit Masterstroke’, produced by Wide Angle Films, is now exclusively available on DocuBay, inviting audiences worldwide to witness the extraordinary story behind India’s Aadhaar revolution.

‘Going Poly’: The different shades of love

Mumbai: In a ground-breaking endeavour to shed light on the intricacies of polyamorous relationships, DocuBay, an international streaming platform from IN10 Media Network, presents Going Poly, a documentary that delves into the lives of individuals from Mumbai and Kolkata, exploring the nuances of love, loyalty, and societal acceptance.

With Going Poly, DocuBay is taking on a topic rarely touched upon by mainstream media in India. The platform aims to provide viewers with a deeper understanding of polyamory, a topic often vetoed in a predominantly monogamous society.

“Polyamorous relationships are a phenomenon in India, but surprisingly we found hardly any movie or documentary made on the topic. The taboo surrounding this topic intrigued us, prompting us to explore it further, for our viewers,” highlighted Girish Dwibhashyam, COO of DocuBay.

The film, produced by VICE Studios, offers viewers a glimpse into the lives of polyamorous individuals from diverse backgrounds and age groups. Through intimate interviews and candid moments, the documentary navigates through the complexities of polyamory, addressing issues such as jealousy, morality, and inheritance.

“We conducted extensive research to understand the nuances of polyamorous relationships and their significance,” explained VICE India director Anil Chaudhary. “Our goal was to present a balanced portrayal of polyamory, free from bias or judgment.”

The documentary also examines the role of consent in polyamorous relationships. With numerous challenges faced while researching and filming, the platform hopes that the film contributes to the ongoing conversation about love, relationships, and societal acceptance of non-traditional partnerships.

Going Poly streams on DocuBay starting 14 February 2024.
