Maran brothers’ feud ends with a Rs 800 crore handshake: media reports

MUMBAI: According to news daily Indian Express, a bitter family dispute between the Maran brothers, Kalanithi and Dayanidhi, has been resolved following the direct intervention of Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin. The settlement, which saw DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran reportedly receive around Rs 800 crore in cash and nearly an acre of prime land in Chennai’s exclusive Boat Club area valued at an estimated Rs 100 crore, brings an end to a row that had rattled investor confidence and threatened the DMK’s image.

The feud boiled over in early June when Dayanidhi issued a legal notice to his elder brother Kalanithi, alleging fraudulent share allotments and corporate misgovernance at Sun TV Network in the early 2000s. Dayanidhi had initially sought Rs 1,500 crore, while Kalanithi was only willing to offer Rs 500 crore.

Stalin, who has previously mediated within the Maran family, initially attempted to resolve the matter himself. When this failed, he enlisted the help of Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani and senior journalist N Ram, both of whom have close ties to the family. Sources indicate that three rounds of talks, including two in person and one via video conference, ultimately led to the agreement.

Dayanidhi’s legal notice specifically claimed that in 2003, while their father Murasoli Maran was in a coma, Kalanithi allegedly allotted himself 1.2 million equity shares at a nominal Rs 10 per share, consolidating over 60 per cent of Sun TV. This, the notice alleged, diluted the stakes of the Maran and M Karunanidhi families from 50 per cent each to 20 per cent.

Sun TV, in a stock exchange filing on June 20, vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “incorrect, misleading, speculative, defamatory and not supported by facts or law,” and stated that all transactions were legally vetted prior to the company’s public listing.

Despite Sun TV’s rebuttal, the controversy sent tremors through the markets, causing its share price to drop over 5 per cent in intra-day trading, and an overall decline of about 8 per cent from recent highs, unsettling investors.

A top source within the DMK first family confirmed that Stalin was visibly displeased by the public nature of the dispute, especially with assembly elections looming next year. His decision to bring in the 91-year-old Veeramani, an elder statesman of Tamil Nadu politics, was due to his respected stature and lack of financial interest in Sun TV.

N Ram, a relative of the Maran family and former editor of The Hindu, also played a crucial role, lending credibility and balance to the mediation given his standing in the media world and ideological alignment with the DMK.

“First, Veeramani phoned the Maran family. After that the others also joined, and three rounds of talks were held between the last week of June and the first week of July,” a source revealed, adding, “Both parties were asked to refrain from speaking to the media and were urged to settle and move on.”

The talks underscored the potential damage to the DMK’s and Maran family’s reputation, as well as the high costs and protracted nature of continued litigation.

The late Murasoli Maran, a nephew of Karunanidhi and cousin to Stalin, was instrumental in establishing the DMK’s presence in Delhi and served as a cabinet minister in multiple central governments. His presence as family patriarch had previously maintained peace between Kalanithi, who built the Sun TV empire, and Dayanidhi, who leveraged his father’s legacy to become the union minister for telecom.

The first major rift, the Indian Express reported,  occurred in 2007 when the Maran family’s newspaper, Dinakaran, published a poll favouring Stalin as Karunanidhi’s political heir over M Alagiri, leading to violent reactions from Alagiri’s supporters. While tensions have simmered since, the financial dimension of this latest dispute made it one of the most severe.

“This whole thing could have gone the other way,” a senior source commented. “But Stalin, Veeramani, and Ram made it clear: let this end now, before it weakens everyone.”

Indian Express failed to get any comments from N. Ram, the Marans or the chief minister.

Doodle-icious: Amul celebrates regional leaders’ wins in assembly polls with topicals

MUMBAI: Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee was sworn-in as West Bengal chief minister for the third straight term Wednesday after she spearheaded her party to a remarkable victory in the recently concluded assembly elections.

2 May marked a jubilant day for regional stalwarts as along with Didi, Pinarayi Vijayan and MK Stalin also emerged victorious in their respective states despite a stiff opposition challenge.

The TMC proved all exit polls wrong and won 213 seats in West Bengal, two more than its 2016 tally, successfully taking on the BJP juggernaut led by PM Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah, besides a battery of national and state leaders.

The Amul creative features the TMC Supremo in her trademark white cotton saree with the captions “She Didi It Again” and “Enjoy TrinAmul!”

The historic win of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the Kerala Assembly election has put the spotlight on its lead author, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. His resolute leadership style and daring political experiments amid major challenges and crises in the state – like the 2018 floods, the Nipah virus outbreak, the Sabarimala case controversy and now the Covid2019 pandemic – has found resounding approval among the state’s electorate, so much so that it re-elected an incumbent government for the first time in four decades. The LDF won 91 seats and the Congress-led UDF 40, while BJP failed to secure a single seat in the state, despite roping in ‘Metroman’ E Sreedharan in a last-minute bid to garner votes.

In Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin-led DMK wrested power from BJP ally AIADMK, denying the ruling party a third straight term. Stalin, the 68-year-old DMK president, is all set to become the chief minister for the first time, after a decade in opposition. The Secular Progressive Alliance led by him won a convincing victory over arch-rival AIADMK in the southern state, securing 156 seats.

The Amul topical depicts the DMK president taking a victory walk on a ramp with the words “STALwin” emblazoned.

2G spectrum case: CBI acquits all accused

Mumbai: A special CBI court today acquitted all accused in the three cases related to the 2G spectrum allocation. The case pertained to graft and money laundering charges against a former telecom minister, politicians, and business executives in the grant of spectrum licences

Deciding the fate of all accused, including former telecom minister A Raja and DMK leader Kanimozhi Karunanithi, the court opined, “Absolutely no hesitation in holding that the prosecution has miserably failed to prove any charge against any of the accused, made in its well choreographed charge sheet.”

The CBI had claimed that Raja had devised his own way of granting telecom licences, brushed aside the first-come-first-served principle, misled the (then) Prime Minister, disregarded the concerns of other ministries and ran a parallel office at home to grant licences to whosoever offered him gratification.

The case relates to alleged below-market-price sale of lucrative telecom permits bundled with airwaves in 2008, which a federal auditor said may have cost the government as much as $28 billion in lost revenue.

In 2012, the Supreme Court ordered 122 licenses held by eight operators to be revoked, declaring the licenses illegal and the process “wholly arbitrary, capricious and contrary to public interest.”

Dayanidhi smells ‘political vendetta’ behind ED’s actions

MUMBAI: A day after India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) issued an order to attach properties and assets worth Rs 742.58 crore belonging to South Indian media baron Kalanidhi Maran and his brother, the former Union Telecom Minister Dayanidhi, the latter has alleged “political vendetta” and accused the ED of acting like a “puppet” in the hands of “someone.”

“ED ‘flouted’ rules. It shows that somebody is behind it,” he told PTI on 2 April. He also said that he will take a legal recourse and come out clean in the case.

Dayanidhi in a statement alleged that “someone was directing the ED from behind.”

He said that while it was “evident” that he had no ownership in or connections to direct to home (DTH) platform Sun Direct or South Asian FM, the professional investments in these were “distracted.”

Dayanidhi went on to add that foreign investments in a domestic company couldn’t be done without the approval of the Centre. “It cannot be but politics painting colours to such a business transaction. ED had ignored certain legal provisions in this matter,” he told PTI in Chennai on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, DMK has denied any link to the Aircel-Maxis deal case, saying it has nothing to do with Sun TV or the deal. The party however, according to the report, will be fine tuning its strategy to ensure that its campaign for the upcoming elections is not marred.

Contrary to the expectations, even after all the controversies Sun TV shares saw a hike of 3.20 per cent, closing at 453.85 up from 440.65 on 2 April.

Sun TV also has a stake in the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad and it remains to be seen if ED intervention will have an impact on the fast approaching multimillionaire league.

NBA condemns attack on journalists and camerapersons in Chennai

MUMBAI: The News Broadcasters Association (NBA) has condemned the attacked on Times Now and Headlines Today by the Dravida Munetra Kazhagam (DMK) cadre in Chennai on 18 May.

Cameramen and journalists of the two channels were attacked while they were covering the news of DMK leader Stalin’s resignation. According to TV reports, cameras and video footages were damaged.  One cameraperson has also been admitted with severe injuries.

NBA president KVL Narayan Rao called it a “cowardly attack meant to intimidate journalists carrying out their work in disseminating news and information, a service that is essential for any democratic society.” He urged Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa to ensure that journalists were allowed to perform their duties in a free and fearless manner.

He also requested that the state authorities would take action against the culprit(s) to ensure such incidents are not repeated.

  • 4 out of 10 manifestoes talk about child rights, says CRY

4 out of 10 manifestoes talk about child rights, says CRY

KOLKATA: After launching its nation-wide campaign ‘Vote for Child Rights’ election advocacy campaign in November last year, the Child Rights and You (CRY) has again attempted to look at the political parties’ manifestos from child rights perspective.

CRY which had launched the campaign in all major metro cities now aims to see whether political parties have given enough importance to issues related to children in promises made for the next five year.

Manifestos of 10 parties viz INC, BJP, NCP, BSP, CPI, CPI(M), SP, AIADMK, DMK and JDS were looked at from the framework of children’s Right to Survival, Development, Protection and Participation.

Some of the key quantitative findings say that only four parties out of 10 – BJP, CPI, DMK and CPI(M) have mentioned children/child rights issues in a separate section. While for rest of the parties it is mentioned in a scattered way mostly under headers like ‘Education’ and ‘Health’.

Average representation of content on children’s issues in 2014 party manifesto is around 11 per cent while in 2009 it was 9.75 per cent. “There is a marginal increase seen as far as quantitative representation is concerned,” the official added.

It further reveals that none of the party talks about the societal role and steps that need to be taken to ensure that children have their right to live, develop, and build their capabilities and interests. Also, none of the parties has looked at all/ different perspectives of child rights/ children’s lives.

CRY would love to ensure that political parties and people in power take heed to ‘Putting Children First’ always among other agendas and give top priority to children’s issues and commit to changing the situation of children in our country.

The manifesto was based on CRY’s in-depth analytical report ‘Status and Trends in Child Rights in India-An overview of the Past Decade’, and covers the aspirations of children across the country. The report comprised of views of development thinkers and practitioners in the Child Rights arena and provides a detailed analysis of child rights indicators.

Speaking about the campaign, CRY (East) regional director Atindra Nath Das, said, “Vote for Child Rights campaign is our way of ensuring that there is political will behind our justified demand to protect Child Rights. It is imperative that the best interest of the child be put at the centre of all policies, legislations and practices, and the Vote for Child Rights campaign focuses on that solely.”

“This is our attempt to remind politicians and governments in power that it is their obligation to undertake all measures in protecting and promoting child rights,” Das concluded.

  • Karunanidhi defends denial of licence to Arasu

Karunanidhi defends denial of licence to Arasu

MUMBAI: DMK chief M Karunanidhi has come out in support of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for not giving Digital Addressable System (DAS) licence to the Tamil Nadu government-owned Arasu Cable TV Corporation.

Karunanidhi, who had set up Arasu Cable TV Corporation during his reign as chief minister, said the UPA government was going by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India‘s (Trai) recommendation that prevents government or government-owned entities from entering the television broadcasting or distribution business.

“The Centre can decide on issuing DAS Licence only based on the recommendations of Trai guidelines. Trai had recommended that Centre and state governments should not involve in cable TV broadcasting,” he said in an interview to party mouthpiece ‘Murasoli‘.

He also expressed disdain at Jayalalithaa‘s accusation that the government was deliberately not issuing licence to Arasu in order to benefit his family.

The DMK chief also said it was not proper on her part to make such remarks at the National Development Council meeting.

Jayalalithaa had at the National Development Council (NDC) meeting recently lambasted the government for deliberately holding licence in order to a ‘political‘ family in a veiled reference to Karunanidhi and his family.

Arasu is yet to receive a DAS licence to operate in Chennai despite repeated plea by the state government and AIADMK MP‘s, who taken the issue to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as well. Arasu had applied for a DAS licence in July.

Karunanidhi and his family hold considerable interest in television and distribution business in Tamil Nadu. While Karunanidhi‘s family owns Kalaignar TV, his grand nephew Kalanithi Maran owns the Sun Group, which has interests in television, print, radio, DTH and cable distribution.

Pertinently, Trai had on 28 December reiterated its November 2008 recommendation that central and state governments or entities owned by them should not be allowed to be in broadcasting and television channel distribution businesses.

The regulator had submitted its recommendations to the Information & Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry on “Issues related to entry of government or government entities into the business of broadcasting and/or distribution of TV channels”.

It also reiterated its view that the government should provide an appropriate exit route to government or government-owned companies which have already been accorded permission to carry on the business of television channel distribution.

The recommendations are expected to impact Arasu, which had received licence in 2007 to operate in Tamil Nadu.
