News Corp revenue up 4%, EBIDTA up 21% in Q1-2015

BENGALURU: News Corporation (News Corp., company) reported 4 per cent growth in revenue in Q1-2015 (Quarter ended 30 September 2014, or current quarter) to US$ 2150 million from US$ 2072 million in the corresponding year ago quarter Q1-2015.

The company’s EBIDTA increased 21 per cent to US$ 170 million in Q1-2015 from US$ 141 million in Q1-2014. The y-o-y EBITDA improvement was driven primarily by strong revenue performances in the Book Publishing, Digital Real Estate Services and Digital Education segments, combined with lower expenses related to the capitalization of Amplify Learning’s software development costs, partially offset by declines at the News and Information Services segment.

The following segments contribute to News Corps numbers: News and Information Services, Book Publishing, Cable Network Programming, Digital Real Estate Services, Digital Education, and ‘Other’.

    Segment Results

    News and Information services

Revenues for Q1-2015 decreased US$ 44 million, or 3 per cent, compared to Q1-2014. Australian newspaper revenues were relatively flat, reflecting modest advertising revenue declines and favourable foreign currency fluctuations.

The company says that total segment advertising revenues declined 7 per cent, driven by weakness primarily in the print advertising market and the absence of results from LMG, partially offset by the benefit from foreign currency fluctuations. Circulation and subscription revenues declined 1 per cent, primarily due to the decline in professional information business revenues at Dow Jones, the absence of results from LMG and lower print circulation volume, partially offset by cover price increases in the U.K. and at several Australian newspapers as well as higher subscription pricing at The Wall Street Journal and WSJ.com. Adjusted revenues declined 3 per cent compared to the prior year.

Segment EBITDA decreased US$28 million in the current quarter, or 21per cent, as compared to the prior year. Results were impacted by revenue weakness at Dow Jones coupled with the sale of LMG and incremental dual rent and other facility costs related to the relocation of the Company’s London operations of US$14 million, partially offset by an increase at News Corp Australia.

    Book Publishing

Revenues in Q1-2015 increased US$ 78 million, or 24 per cent, compared to the prior year driven by the inclusion of the results of Harlequin and continued popularity of the Divergent series by Veronica Roth. The company claims that it sold more than 3.5 million net units of the Divergent series in the quarter helped by the release of Four: A Divergent Collection. E-book revenues improved by 28 per cent versus the prior year period, primarily driven by Harlequin, and represented 22 per cent of consumer revenues. Segment EBITDA increased US$ 12 million, or 28 per cent, from Q1-2014 due to higher revenues coupled with ongoing operational efficiencies and higher contribution to profits from ebooks, as well as a modest benefit from the acquisition of Harlequin. The improvements were partially offset by approximately US$ 5 million of transaction fees related to the acquisition of Harlequin. Adjusted revenues increased 6 per cent and Adjusted Segment EBITDA increased 23 per cent, compared to the prior year.

    Cable Network Programming

In the first quarter of fiscal 2015, revenues increased US$ 7 million, or 5 per cent, compared Q1-2014, primarily due to higher affiliate pricing and increased subscribers. Segment EBITDA in the quarter increased US$ 3 million, or 10 per cent, due to higher revenues, partially offset by higher programming rights and other production costs. Adjusted revenues increased 4 per cent and Adjusted Segment EBITDA increased 10 per cent, compared to the prior year.

    Digital Real Estate Services

Revenues in the quarter increased $22 million, or 24 per cent, compared to Q1-2014, primarily reflecting higher residential listing depth product penetration and higher pricing. Segment EBITDA in the quarter increased US$ 13million, or 30 per cent, compared to the prior year primarily due to the increased revenues as noted above, partially offset by higher marketing costs and US$ 2 million of incremental costs related to the proposed acquisition of Move,Inc. (“Move”). Adjusted revenues and Adjusted Segment EBITDA increased 23 per cent and 32 per cent, respectively, compared to the prior year.

    Digital Education

Revenues in the quarter increased US$ 15 million, or 56 per cent, compared to the prior year primarily due to higher revenues at Amplify Learning, driven by the adoption of early grade print and hybrid learning products, and at Amplify Access. Segment EBITDA in Q1-2015 improved US$ 27 million, or 53 per cent, from the prior year, primarily due to the capitalization of Amplify Learning’s software development costs of US$ 15 million and higher revenues.

    Other

Segment EBITDA in Q1-2015 improved by US$ 2 million compared to Q1-2014, due to lower fees and costs, net of indemnification, related to the claims and investigations arising out of certain conduct at The News of the World (the “U.K. Newspaper Matters”) of approximately US$ 3 million.

The net expense related to the U.K. Newspaper Matters was US$ 14 million for the three months ended 30 September 2014 as compared to US$ 17 million for the three months ended 30 September 2013.

Final book in Divergent trilogy to be split into two films

MUMBAI: Lionsgate, one of the leading global entertainment company, will produce and release Allegiant, starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James and based on the third book in Veronica Roth’s best-selling Divergent trilogy, as two separate films.

It was announced on 11 April by Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger.  The Company will release a total of four Divergent films on its Summit Entertainment label, with the next film, Insurgent, which begins production next month, slated for an American release on 20 March, 2015 and Allegiant – Parts 1 & 2 scheduled for release on 18 March, 2016, and 24 March, 2017, respectively.

The three books ranked one-two-three on the USA Today best-seller list for 2013.

“Veronica Roth brings her captivating story to a masterful conclusion in Allegiant, a rich, action-packed book with material that is ideally suited to two strong and fulfilling movies,” said Friedman and Wachsberger in a statement. “The storytelling arc and world of the characters lend themselves perfectly to two films, a storytelling strategy that has worked very well for us on the two Twilight: Breaking Dawn films and about which we’re tremendously enthusiastic for the two upcoming Mockingjay films of The Hunger Games franchise.”

The first film in the series, Divergent, revolves around the story which takes place in a dystopian post-apocalyptic version of Chicago, where people are divided into distinct factions based on human virtues. Beatrice Prior is warned that she is Divergent and thus will never fit into any one of the factions and soon learns that a sinister plot is brewing in her seemingly perfect society.

After the cataclysmic events in Insurgent, Tris and Four enter a dangerous new world in Allegiant: Parts 1 & 2 that they no longer recognise. As new truths are revealed about the past and future, Tris must face impossible choices about courage, allegiance and love to protect the people closest to her.

Divergent stars Academy Award nominee Shailene Woodley (The Secret Life of the American Teenager), Theo James (Downton Abbey), Academy Award winner Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road), Ashley Judd (Missing), Jai Courtney (Spartacus), Ray Stevenson (Dexter), Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class), Miles Teller (The Fantastic Four), Maggie Q (Nikita), Tony Goldwyn (Scandal), Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) and Mekhi Phifer (Lie to Me).

MUMBAI: This is the final review in a 10-part series by Indiantelevision.com on the books that are being adapted into Hollywood movies in the year 2014.

The Fault in Our Stars – John Green

“You gave me forever in numbered days, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am for that.”

The Fault in Our Stars follows Hazel Grace Lancaster, who diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 12, was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumors in her lungs… for now. Two years post the medical miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time, Hazel lives strapped to an oxygen tank, the tumors sparsely kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.

Enter Augustus “Gus” Waters. A match made at Cancer Kid Support Group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and interested in Hazel, something that has taken Hazel completely by surprise. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-think how the stereotypical vows taken at wedding of sickness and health, life and death, will completely rewrite her story.

“Sometimes you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read that book.” When Hazel Grace Lancaster said that, millions of readers agreed with her hook line and sinker. What with a raking of 4.50/5 of 5,29,985 ratings on Goodreads and Booklist calling it Green’s best and most ambitious novel to date, The Fault in Our Stars is known to stand out for its “ironic sense of humour, melancholic realism and quirky philosophy which strikes an endearing chord with the readers”.

In January 2012, Fox 2000, a division of 20th Century Fox, optioned the rights to adapt the novel into a feature film. The film stars Golden Globe Award nominee Shailene Woodley (The Descendents, The Secret Life of an American Teenager) as Hazel Grace Lancaster, while newcomer Ansel Elgort (Carrie, Divergent) stars as Augustus Waters sparking an interesting chemistry between the two characters. Golden Globe Award winner Laura Dern (Enlightened), Scream Award nominee Sam Trammel (True Blood) and Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe (Spiderman) round up the cast in the film.

MUMBAI: Here’s the review of the sixth book in the 10-part series that features books being adapted into Hollywood movies in 2014.

    ‘Divergent’ by Veronica Roth

What makes you different also makes you dangerous!

The future belongs to those who know where they belong. What if you don’t belong? What do you do when you don’t belong? What do they do when they know you don’t belong?

That is the life of Beatrice “Tris” Prior, who discovers that she is “divergent” – that she does not fit into any one “faction”. She soon uncovers a sinister plot brewing in her seemingly perfect society.

In a futuristic dystopian post-apocalyptic Chicago, people are divided into five distinct factions based on their personalities – Candor are the honest, Abnegation are the selfless, Dauntless are the brave, while Amity are the peaceful, and Erudite are the intelligent. When Tris discovers a conspiracy to destroy the Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.

Divergent has been extremely well received. It won Favourite Book of 2011 in the Goodreads Choice Awards 2011. The book currently stands at 4.37/5 of 590,875 ratings. Common Sense Media, a not for profit organization working towards improving lives, commented on Veronica Roth’s book by saying that it had deep messages about identity and controlling societies and that the plot was unstoppable and remarkably original. The book also won the Sakura Medal Contest.

The rights to the live-action, motion picture adaptation was bought by Summit Entertainment, an American film studio behind teenage blockbusters like The Twilight Saga and Step Up Revolution. The film directed by Neil Burger (Limitless) boasts an interesting cast led by Golden Globe Award nominee Shailene Woodley (The Descendents, The Fault in Our Stars) as the Divergent Tris, along with Theo James (Downton Abbey, Golden Boy) as Four, Maggie Q (Nikita) as Tori with Tony Goldwyn (Scandal) and Ashley Judd (Missing) as Andrew and Natalie Prior, Tris’ parents and Kate Winslet (Titanic, The Reader) as Jeannie Matthews, the film’s lead antagonist.
