HOOQ targets tier I Indian cities as early adopters; plans original series

MUMBAI: Come June and India will witness its first subscription based video-on-demand platform HOOQ.

As was reported earlier by Indiantelevision.com, the platform will compete with over the top (OTT) players like Hotstar and Ditto TV amongst others. As a major differentiating factor, HOOQ will be providing content that has not been available before to Indian consumers and intends to target tier I cities in the country as early adopters. However, the app will be available to all smart phone users nationally. The service also offers content for all age groups.

The OTT player is in the Indian market for the long haul. With a view to gather substantial number of users in the coming years, HOOQ is also looking at starting its own original series, a la Netflix, which had launched its exclusive made-for-web series House of Cards.

In a conversation with this website about its readiness to improve the platform, HOOQ India head Krishnan Rajagopalan said, “We are constantly going to be evolving the product and the content based on user feedback. This is very much a company philosophy and it’s really up to the user to give us feedback. The better feedback you give, the better the product will be.”

When queried whether the Indian audience is ready for a particular genre, which has more traction Rajagopalan said, “We are going to have different categories. The app will have all Indian languages and feeds and by the time we launch it will be more Indianised. It will be much more relevant, have genres that matter, top action, top rom-com; we will have it all.”

Talking about the Indian market, Rajagopalan said that since India was a fascinating market, there are bound to be challenges. “This is a first product in its category. I don’t think there is anybody doing what we are doing, which is to offer premium content that is not there on ad supported platforms. So we are spending a lot of money, tens of millions on marketing, content and technology. A major challenge is that there will be a lot of consumer education required in the early days and we clearly need to have the right content. We need to have the right distribution partnerships to make it as convenient to the consumer as possible. Not necessarily a challenge, but there are steps that we need to take before we become ubiquitous.”

While the company has not yet chalked out its marketing strategy, plans are to take ‘Go To Market’ (GTM) marketing route when the service’s commercial launch takes place in June.

Speaking about Warner Bros’ association with HOOQ, Warner Bros general manager N Muthuram said, “Singtel will have a strategic presence in the Indian market with their partnership with Airtel. While we are licensed to HOOQ, we also have other local partners and we have been providing content to others as well. The deal with HOOQ is to have access to all of the content that is relevant to the consumer.”

As reported earlier, the platform will have 10,000 movies and series from Hollywood, Bollywood and regional content for just Rs 199 a month. HOOQ is a joint venture with Singtel, Sony Pictures Television and Warner Bros. It will provide content from international as well as local players and has already partnered with 60 local partners.

  • Zee Classic ushers in phase two of revamp with new positioning, campaign

Zee Classic ushers in phase two of revamp with new positioning, campaign

MUMBAI: Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited’s (Zeel) Hindi movie channel Zee Classic, which changed its look in June last year, is now gearing up for the second phase of revamp.

The channel, which is known for playing timeless ever green movies, has launched a new TVC reinstating its brand positioning of ‘Woh Zamana Kare Deewana’ in order to connect better with its target audience.

Aiming to reach out to an audience with the same brand ethos, the new brand film will be showcased during the telecast of Zee Classic’s celebrated showcase – RD Night – The Concert on 26 April at 1 pm. The messaging through the TVC will take viewers back to the all-time classic eras of Indian cinema truly brought alive after all these years by the channel.

RD Night – The Concert, will see renowned artists from the music fraternity come together to commemorate the unconventional legend and celebrate the life’s work of a man who irrevocably changed the world of music with his chart topping compositions – RD Burman.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Zee Entertainment Enterprises deputy business head, Hindi movie channels, Ruchir Tiwari says, “In phase two of our revamp, we have to come up with the positioning and will take it ahead with our multi-media marketing campaign. These great movies that we showcase on our channel are unmatched and very different and through this campaign, we are pushing the boundaries.”

The channel took six months to design the campaign. Designed and developed by Whyness and produced by Abstract Films, the two films are directed by Pariskhit Vaidya.

The TVCs encapsulate the ethos of bringing alive an era of films that not only enchanted but were also revered by the audiences. Rehashing the cult classic path-breaking films such as Padosan and Sholay, the brand films reconstruct the scenes merged with contemporary situations and characters.

Tiwari believes that Zee Classic has now been accepted by the audience and has a loyal base, which was one of the reasons behind unveiling this campaign. “To up the ante, with the New Year and also with new dynamics coming, you know that you have to broad base and get in newer audiences. Our another main objective is to increase the awareness of the channel.”

On the marketing front, the films will travel across network and on non-network channels too.

    Future roadmap

In order to have a better connect with the existing audiences and attract newer ones, Zee Classic is also looking at original programming in terms of getting new weekly shows on-board in the next quarter. “The work is still in progress,” Tiwari informs.

On the movie library front, the channel has been adding fresh movies to its kitty like Ganga Jamuna, which is slated to premier on 3 May. “We are also working to get two Gulzar movies namely Parichayand Khushboo,” he says.

According to Tiwari, the first two months of 2015 have been successful months for the channel. “From the last two months, the channel’s viewership is steady and has grown. Every second week, we had a very good viewership score card,” he adds.

When queried as to how the network divides its strong movie library on its channels like Zee Cinema, &Pictures and Zee TV, Tiwari says that the network has a very focused and sharp approach with different teams handling different movie channels. “Classic and Zee Cinema are very focused in terms of their mindset and approach and the common usage is very few,” laughs Tiwari.

He further opines, “Consumers don’t really give us the feedback that movie is aired on various channels. They are very clear that which movie comes on which channel. In fact the recall on all our three channels has been positive in terms of what kind of content they expect and recall.”

Moreover, Tiwari reveals that the network is aiming to expand its HD portfolio by bringing in exclusive movies only for HD. “We have already taken the first step by airing Haider on Zee Cinema HD,” he adds.

Tiwari says that the on-going Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament has not impacted Zee Classic’s viewership. “IPL is not a new event and over the years, we have our own learnings on how to approach a big event. I think it gives an opportunity where much more people sample the event and then come back to the movies as the second destination. Movie channels had witnessed a growth during last year’s IPL and this year too, we are confident that we will either sustain or grow from our numbers last year.”

Zeel has its learnings on what kind of movies work during this period and what works post cricket. “It is about buying the right movie at the right time,” says Tiwari.

With satellite rights of as many as 200 films still lying unsold over the last three years, the dream run had faced a few hurdles. However, now with TV channels pulling up their socks on film acquisitions with renewed vigour, Tiwari believes that the television movie market has seen a self correction, which was the need of an hour. “The satellite rights prices had gone through the roof and it was high time that it got corrected. The industry is also now rallying around it and understanding the perspective in terms of why it is not viable to pay those high prices. With the industry working around the module, everything will fall into place.”

When queried as to whether Zeel will continue to acquire blockbuster movies for a huge sum, Tiwari says that it depended on the function of the market. “We will buy whatever will make sense in terms of viability and ROI. It is about buying a right movie at the right time.”

With Star India launching Hotstar and movies being premiered first on digital and then on TV, Tiwari reveals that Zee too has been following the model with its VOD platform, Ditto TV. “All the mediums can co-exist, whether it is a mobile TV viewer, a user wanting high definition experience via a home theatre or the satellite market, which reaches out to a large majority of the population,” Tiwari concludes.

  • Is Star’s VoD ‘hot’ enough?

    Is Star’s VoD ‘hot’ enough?

MUMBAI: “At Star, we have always focused on dramatically enhancing the overall consumer experience. Smart technology, combined with powerful content, can be disruptive…,” had said Star India CEO Uday Shankar when the network launched its online sports platform starsports.com.

Two years have passed since then and keeping up with the changing times, the giant network is back with a new platform. Christened hotStar, the video on demand (VoD) portal, currently running in beta version, will change the way people view content on television or digitally.

With everything found under one roof, the platform has all the genres the network dabbles in. From popular dailies to live sporting events, a click will please many.

The network labels the platforms as the “most compelling catalogue ever offered over-the-top on mobile and the web, making it the most the most complete video destination for consumers.”

With around 20,000 hours content spread across seven languages, which includes 120+ full length TV shows, 500+ movies and live screening of popular sports like cricket, football, tennis and kabbadi, hotStar caters to a very large and diverse audience.

Available across devices, the VoD is not the first such platform launched by a television network in the country; Ditto TV was launched by Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) in 2012. There are many other such platforms like Biscoot and Zenga also available today.

Believes Shotformats Digital Productions CEO and managing director Niyati Shah that though the platform looks nice but the concept of launching the same isn’t clear. “On television there is appointment viewing and in the digital world it is all about snacking. And with only Star content available on the platform, I don’t know what will be the scalability.”

The free to view platform has a simple and easy user interface. However, what stands out is the logo which though is a star but is quite different from that of the networks logo. The tilted star has bright neon green and yellow colours. Its name is another feature that stands out.

“It does sound like a talent show,” says FCB Ulka Digital creative head Sudarshan Sudevan but quickly adds, “But for a site of this sort, it’s not the name that’s critical, it’s the content. And the users will get a hang of it in due course of time.”

Sudevan is excited that Star India is finally into video on demand. “With a good mix of TV shows, movies and sports … I am sure the video friendly population of today is going to have a treat. The network’s idea to enter the space that has been dominated by international players like Netflix and Amazon will be of a pleasure for fans here,” he adds.

Agrees L&K Saatchi & Saatchi India CEO and managing partner Anil Nair that today people want to view content on the move.

However, Shah isn’t convinced. “If I’m a Star TV viewer and miss something, maybe then I would come on the portal. Otherwise I have doubts who would log on,” she states while emphasisng on the fact that through the networks’ strength, the platform might get marketed well but the future will tell the true story.

Nair too points out that today when there are aggregators like Youtube and Apple TV, the lack of genres available on Star’s new platform might become a hurdle. “Hopefully, in the future, the app will add more genres to its bouquet otherwise this can become a reservation for a viewer.”

Highlighting that digitisation will change the mediums in the country, the experts are optimist that with many leaps to take, service providers have a lot to offer.

The network has already started the ground work and a click on any of its current websites (apart from StarSports.com) directly takes the viewer to the new platform. The soft launch has successfully been able to create the buzz and now one just has to wait for the big band launch.

  • Ditto TV introduces new payment model

Ditto TV introduces new payment model

MUMBAI: Ditto TV, India’s first OTT (Over-The-Top) TV distribution platform from Zee New Media, the digital arm of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) has partnered with mobile payment provider Fortumo to introduce a new mobile payment option to further simplify the overall consumer experience. With this partnership, Ditto TV users can now subscribe to their favourite content on Ditto TV and make payments directly through their mobile operator, and without the need of a credit card, cash on delivery (COD), or net banking options. This payment model is available for both post- paid and pre- paid mobile users.

Speaking about this partnership, Manoj Padmanabhan, Business Head, DittoTV said, “We at Ditto TV are committed to making the user experience as seamless, convenient and memorable as possible. With the association with Fortumo, we are now a few steps closer to ensuring that our users have the ease and simplicity they need to make payments using their mobile phones. Fortumo, with its multiple telecom operator tie-ups, will help us reach out to complex markets, where credit cards or net banking options are limited, and build our presence across key markets beyond the metros.”

“Compared to mobile phone users, there are very few credit card owners in emerging markets like India and South-East Asia. This creates a situation where a lot of people want access to mobile entertainment, but have no way to pay for it. Operator billing solves this problem by allowing companies like Ditto TV to charge users on their phone bill. In addition to significantly expanding payment coverage for merchants, Fortumo also reduces the time to market as only one integration to enable payments in 80 countries globally,” said Gerri Kodres, SVP of Business Development and Carrier Relations at Fortumo.

Interestingly, India has witnessed stronger adoption for smartphones with a market penetration of close to 100 million, as compared to 20 million for credit cards. Furthermore, credit card penetration remains largely confined to metros, comprising a mere 1.7% of the country’s overall population. Another challenge is the inherent resistance observed among credit card users, in sharing critical account-related information, along with the tedious sign-up processes involved. Allowing payments through mobile operators effectively mitigates the need for credit card information and will help Ditto TV reach out to a huge potential user base across smaller markets which have limited access to credit cards. Fortumo currently operates in about 80 countries across the world and has tie ups with most major Indian telecom operators – Idea Cellular, Vodafone, Airtel and Tata Docomo.

Ditto TV has integrated this seamless process for mobile payment across all subscription packages, including VOD and MOD content. All a customer needs to do is to select the content to view and confirm the payment on the mobile phone charging the amount to their mobile operator. Fortumo will process the payment request with the concerned telecom operator and once the verification is generated, the user can avail the content. The payment is later charged to the customer mobile bill or deducted from his pre- paid account balance, as the case may be.

Today, Ditto TV offers the largest collection of premium content through 70 LIVE TV channels spread across leading genres like GEC, Sports, Lifestyle, Regional and News along with rich on-demand video capabilities. Ditto TV can be downloaded from www.dittotv.com

  • Zee 24 Taas repositions itself as youth centric

Zee 24 Taas repositions itself as youth centric

MUMBAI: It is not just politicians who are looking to grab the attention of India’s large young population. News channels too are reorienting their programming to enhance receptivity among the younger lot.

A few months ago, Zee Media Corporation’s (ZMCL) national Hindi news channel Zee News introduced its campaign ‘Ab Khabar Aapke Rangon Mein’ targeting the Gen Y of the country. Now, it’s the turn of Zee Media’s Marathi news channel Zee 24 Taas.

Starting today, the channel is on air with a complete makeover to its look, feel and positioning as well. With an improved tagline ‘Raha ek paul pudhe’ (stay one step ahead), Zee 24 Taas is repositioning itself to suit an audience of 15 to 45 years as compared to its earlier target group of 25 to 45 years.

Nearly half of India’s population is in the age group of 15 to 45 years. ZMCL CEO Alok Agrawal says, “With the advent of digitations, researches have shown that viewers are setting up new priorities; therefore it has become imperative to refurbish the brand. Backed by Zee Media Corporation Limited’s core philosophy to innovate in order to stay ahead, the new look of Zee 24 Taas is a step in the right direction. We are confident that the new identity will be applauded by the viewer which is rich in content and vibrant in look.”

“The positioning is ‘action oriented’ because that is what the youth is interested in today. Rather than focusing on long news and discussions, we are keeping it short with more visuals. The youth wants to know how the news will benefit them in their lives,” says Zee 24 Taas business head Bhushan Khot.

Over the weekend, a series of programs under the tagline will be introduced to help youngsters know about how to move up in life. An election show began last week called Whats Up India to understand the younger generation’s perspective. Major colleges in Maharashtra are being visited for the show.

There is increased competition among news channels. News consumption in Maharashtra also happens in English and Hindi. “Today our competition is not just restricted to Marathi language (news channels) but the overall news genre. Our aim is to make the entire channel strong onscreen as well as digital and at the same time reflect the aspirations of the young Marathi audience,” says Khot.

Additionally, viewers can also catch Zee 24 Taas live on their mobile phones via Android, iOS and Blackberry apps through Ditto TV. Zee 24 Taas will later become a subscription services, after initial free preview for a month.

Zee 24 Taas has refurbished its studio and a stylist has been hired to give new looks to its anchors in addition to requisite training. The online and offline graphics have also been modified by an inhouse team. Zee 24 Taas editor-in-chief Uday Nirgudkar says, “We are re-launching the channel to fine tune our self to reflect on the changing needs of viewers. We have always been viewer focused & viewer centric hence our new offering will be more qualitative and focused.”

“We are trying to tell the audience that the language is Marathi but its look and feel is at par with any other channel,” adds Khot. The language the anchors use will also undergo a slight change with shorter sentences being the goal.

The marketing campaign to promote the new look will break across the state on 6 February, with print and outdoor and followed up on radio and TV next week.

Print ads will be visible in the newspapers DNA , Loksatta, Mumbai Times, Lokmat, Sakaal and others. On the digital front, banners and text ads will be seen on Google display network sites and Facebook.

The promotional jingle for TV and radio has been composed by noted Marathi singer and writer Saleel Kulkarni. The 20-day long campaign created by Draftfcb Ulka will see about 150 outdoor spots being adorned, with most of them being bus shelters, bus panels and hoardings in Mumbai, Pune and Nashik. The radio jingle will run across Radio City 91.1 FM, Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM, Red FM 93.5 and Big 92.7 FM.

Sources say the cost of the entire rebranding exercise would be approximately Rs 15 million with nearly 80 per cent of it being spent on marketing itself.

For the third quarter ended 31 December 2013, the channel had a viewership of 21.3 million (Source: TAM, CS 4+, All India, Q3 Average Monthly Reach).
