Does Cricket Give New Zealand and India a Diplomatic Tool to Improve Bilateral Relations?

Cricket is already recognised as one of the biggest sports in India and New Zealand, so it’s hard to believe it’s still growing. However, that is exactly what’s happening right now, and both countries have a lot to gain.

Just two years ago, the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup set new benchmarks, amassing 422 billion viewing minutes on the Disney Star Network in India alone, representing a 54% increase from the 2011 World Cup and a 9% rise from 2019. Meanwhile, in New Zealand, the recent 2024/25 series between the Black Caps and England attracted a huge viewership, with full houses reported across venues like Christchurch’s Hagley Oval and Wellington’s Basin Reserve.

In the sports betting world, betting on cricket has increased dramatically, with recent reports claiming that cricket is now one of the most bet-on sports in the country. Whether they’re in the stands or the online casino NZ, cricket lovers are engaging more with the sport every day, and India is right there with them.

As cricket continues to grow, so does the connection between these two nations. Over the last decade, the Black Caps have played the Indian cricket team many times, and although this is a fierce rivalry that generates intense competition and passion on the field, it has also offered a chance to improve bilateral relations.

The Relationship Between New Zealand and India

In 2025, New Zealand and India are expected to have a strong economic relationship, with trade between the two nations growing steadily. India is New Zealand’s fifth-largest trading partner and an important market for agricultural exports, dairy products, and wine. In turn, New Zealand exports a broad range of goods to India, including electronics, pharmaceuticals, and machinery.

Over the last few years, both countries have been in discussions to establish a comprehensive free trade agreement, which is expected to boost investment and economic cooperation even further and allow for better market access, especially in sectors such as AI technology and education.
Outside of trade, India and New Zealand have also been strengthening their strategic partnership, with both countries working to improve their defence cooperation with discussions on joint training programs and expertise exchanges. In short, both countries are interlinked, and any diplomatic tool to nurture and improve the relationship will be incredibly important for securing a healthy, successful future.

Cricket: More Than Just a Sport

Cricket appears to be one of those tools. This sport has become one of the strongest cultural and diplomatic ties between India and New Zealand, with both countries regularly playing in bilateral series and ICC tournaments.

India has a larger cricket market, but New Zealand has earned respect for its skill, sportsmanship, and competitiveness on the field. The regular exchange of players, tours, and events has helped build a strong bond over the last few decades.

It has also helped boost tourism. Whether it’s the Cricket World Cup or the regular series match-ups between the two teams, more and more New Zealand and Indian tourists have been visiting each other’s countries, working to drive both economies. In fact, Indian tourists visiting New Zealand will often extendtheir stay beyond the season to explore and spend time throughout more of the country, and vice versa – and, once again, improve the respect and appreciation they have for one another.

Cricket has proven to be more than just a game between bat and ball for India and New Zealand. Instead, it has become a powerful catalyst for cultural, economic, and diplomatic collaboration. As the sport continues to captivate millions of fans in both nations, it’s likely to continue serving as a vital tool for shaping their shared future.

Disney star launches the #KhushiyonKePeeche campaign

Mumbai: On the occasion of World Television Day, Disney Star Network launched a new campaign called “#KhushiyonKePeeche” to recognise India’s cable and DTH operators. The campaign highlights the operators’ consistent efforts to provide a seamless TV viewing experience for consumers, as well as the enormous value they add to a TV household across the country.

“#KhushiyonKePeeche” is an extension of the previous “#DisneyStarKaNaman” campaign launched by Disney Star Network to highlight the role of cable and DTH operators.

As a tribute, the campaign portrays cable operators as ‘caring and outstanding saathi’ and DTH operators as those who open the ‘door to happiness.’

In a country where television is the primary source of entertainment, the film depicts the operators as the true source of joy, working behind the scenes to bring entertainment closer to every television home.

Disney Star Distribution and International, India head Gurjeev Singh Kapoor said, “Every day the cable and DTH affiliates ensure that there is no disruption in content delivery to millions of TV households across the nation; they truly are the backbone of the distribution system. Their endeavour to go out of the way to ensure uninterrupted services to the consumers with an enhanced TV viewing experience is truly commendable.”

“We at Disney Star Network can reach our audiences from every corner of the nation thanks to the persistent spirit of the 900+ cable and DTH affiliates we work with. We take pride in having forged strong relationships with each of them over the last three decades, which helps us work together as one team with the common goal of delivering high-quality entertainment to our TV viewers. This campaign is a token of our appreciation to recognise their relentless efforts in ensuring continuous service across the nation,” he added.

The brand film is based on the life of a cable and DTH operator, ensuring that viewers have an uninterrupted viewing experience. It all starts with a cable operator getting on his bike to start the day and a DTH operator adjusting an antenna at home. They witness various emotions at various locations as they continue to do their jobs throughout the day.

They see a child watching cartoons with her father, a family watching an emotional drama together, and a group of friends cheering on a cricket match. The film concludes with Disney Star Network’s top stars thanking each cable and DTH provider, emphasising “Aap hain toh hum hain.”

The campaign will be aired across the Disney Star Network on entertainment, movies, sports, and regional channels on 20, 21 and 22 of November in Hindi and seven regional languages (Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odiya, Tamil, and Telugu).

  • Disney Star network execute 24-hour roadblock for Tata Play

Disney Star network execute 24-hour roadblock for Tata Play

Mumbai: Disney Star network executed a 24-hour roadblock for Tata Sky to drive awareness for their recent rebranding campaign as Tata Play. The roadblock was in effect from 27 January to 28 January.

After 18 years as Tata Sky, the direct-to-home service provider announced its rebranding as Tata Play on 26 January signaling its expanded business interests in broadband and OTT aggregation.

The Pan India outreach was delivered in eight languages on 54 channels across movies, entertainment, music, kids, infotainment and lifestyle channels. The network also executed 1800+ aston bands, 1450+ bugs, strategic in-show integrations in top shows across seven languages and 30+ creatives.

“Disney Star is thrilled to associate with Tata Sky at a critical juncture in their 18-year journey, as they rebrand themselves as Tata Play,” said Disney Star head network entertainment channels Kevin Vaz. “This 24-hour network roadblock across all the entertainment channels of Disney Star demonstrates the strength of our network and the pivotal role it can play to support brands in their business transformation efforts. Our entertainment network’s rich experience and unparalleled reach of 700 million monthly unique viewers makes us the platform of choice for advertisers to derive the maximum investment value.”

Tata Play MD and CEO Harit Nagpal said the 24- hour roadblock on the Disney Star network has helped create massive awareness across India, of Tata Play and its offerings right on day one of the launches.  “Disney Star teams across various channels worked closely with the Tata Play team and amplified the message through their well-known characters, and created many other value-adds which added further ammunition to the execution. It was an absolute delight to work with the Disney Star network who brought all their resources together to provide seamless execution for this brand transformation campaign,” said Nagpal.

Wavemaker India chief client officer and head – West Shekhar Banerjee said the agency had set very strong, aggressive goals about the new brand’s awareness in week one. “When we’re doing such a high scale, important brand transition, nothing comes close to TV as a medium. It is still the largest medium with around 900 million audiences in the country. And there cannot be a better steroid than the largest network to reach this audience. In one day you can achieve what you cannot in a month. Our creative partner Ogilvy has worked with us in the past for similar launches and knows the drill. We made sure there’s enough content and space so that it doesn’t become jarring but at the same time, it allows us to get our messaging out clearly.”
