Discovery to air new series ‘Smart China’

MUMBAI: This September, join hacker Josh Klein as he explores some of China’s most innovative experiments, technologies, and teams that are pushing the boundaries of human ingenuity, in a new series from Discovery. Find out how China is leading a wave of global innovation on SMART CHINA, premiering on Discovery on September 3, airing every Saturday at 11 PM.

Josh Klein is a hacker. He loves examining things – from systems to processes to animal behavior – then, taking them apart and putting the pieces together again to produce something better and more efficient. On each episode of SMART CHINA, Josh delves into how China – once known as the world’s biggest factory – transforms into the world’s biggest laboratory of entrepreneurship and invention, to help us live cleaner, greener, and smarter as we move into the next century.

The series will introduce unique new products and technologies such as the supercapacitor tram, food safety tracking systems, visible light communication, a price comparison app, and autonomous drive technology. It will also examine how these innovations could help address a number of environmental and lifestyle challenges faced in China, such as air pollution, water scarcity, traffic congestion, and food safety.

    Smart Move

Josh travels thousands of kilometers to meet with some of China’s smartest minds, learn about their unique innovations, and joins forces with a panel of experts to search for innovations that could radically solve the world’s transport problems. A super powered tram packed with supercharged capacitors is capable of travelling almost ten kilometers on only ten seconds of charge. An incredible innovation has the potential to transform commercial air travel. An innovative travel tool could make daily commutes more convenient. The future of transportation is here!

    Smart Life

In this episode, Josh unearths innovations that could radically transform our lives. An incredible tech uses naked light to transmit digital data 10,000 times faster than today’s Wi-Fi and it’s near impossible to hack; an advanced food safety tracking system ensures safety of produce from farm to table; and when self-propelled liquid metal robots find their feet and walk into our daily lives, this could well usher in a new century where science fiction becomes science fact.

    Smart Planet

Creating a smarter planet for the future does not mean negating the past. In fact – quite the opposite, combining traditional wisdom plus future tech equals a smart future. Josh investigates technology that could transform our lives and create a clean, green Smart Planet. This episode unveils groundbreaking futuristic projects: an elegant innovation harnesses the power of the sun like never before, maximizing plant growth and generating solar energy; a vehicle connected to the smart world around could make our futuristic life safer and more efficient; coal – an ancient energy – is being revolutionized and transformed into a clean green power source; and a living, breathing, cleaning machine has the ability to filter up to 2,400 cubic meters of polluted water a day.

SMART CHINA is produced by Discovery in cooperation with the China Intercontinental Communication Center (CICC).

Discovery brings new reality-drama series ‘Hardcore Pawn’

MUMBAI: Pawning is an old practice and pawn shops are a common phenomenon in the USA, where one can get quick and easy cash by pledging (loan) their personal belongings or selling their valuable items. Discovery’s new reality series HARDCORE PAWN takes viewers into the crazy and dynamic world of American Jewelry and Loan – Detroit, USA’s largest pawn store, where a wide assortment of customers bring in everything from gold to old cars, from alligators to prosthetic limbs to exchange for cash.

Viewers get a glimpse of the daily events at the pawn store where each day brings new customers, new rewards — and new drama. Premiering August 29, HARDCORE PAWN will air weekdays (Mon-Fri) at 8 PM on Discovery.

Follow the Gold family as they wheel and deal with colourful customers, manage temperamental employees, and squabble with one another in the name of making money in one of the most troubled cities in America. This isn’t a typical trading job; this is ‘Hardcore Pawn’. The Gold family and their employees never know what to expect when people’s personal items are on the line. As each episode of this fascinating series reveals, haggling over a price can quickly escalate into an all-out conflict.

American Jewelry and Loan (AJL) is owned by Leslie “Les” Gold, the grandson of a pawnbroker who has set up in Michigan’s iconic 8 Mile Road. Accompanied by his son Seth and daughter Ashley, both university graduates and future owners of the business, Les finds managing the sibling rivalry as challenging as running the business. AJL was opened in 1978, and has since become one of the largest and most recognized pawn shops in the world. The store handles anything from family heirlooms to electronics, from diamonds to heavy machinery. Each pawn ticket has a story, and there are over 45,000 stories to tell.

Ad cap & linked case put off to Sept; court to hear plea against stay order

NEW DELHI: With no resolution in sight to the imbroglio relating to adcaps on television channels, the Delhi High Court has adjourned the hearing one more time, this time to September 29, 2016.

The matter had earlier been put off on May 13, 2016 to today by chief justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath as they did not have time to hear the matter in view of part-heard cases.

When the case comes up next, court is also expected to take up an application by intervenor Home Cable Network Pvt Ltd seeking vacation of the order staying action against violating television channels.

In the hearing on March 29, 2016, a plea was made on behalf of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) that a proposal was being contemplated to amend the relevant provision relating to limiting ads to 12 minutes an hour.

On May 13, 2016, the court had agreed to take up at the next hearing for vacation of stay. The court had on February 11, 2016 had also agreed to take up the application by Discovery Communications to intervene on the matter.

Earlier on November 27, 2105, the court chaired by the chief justice, had said the matter had been pending for some time and, therefore, it would hear and conclude the case in the next hearing. On that day, MIB had informed the court that it was in talks with the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) and other stakeholders on the issue of the advertising cap of 12 minutes per hour. This was the first time that the ministry had put in an appearance in the petition filed by the NBA against the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and others.

The case, filed by NBA and others against TRAI and the Union Government, has so far been adjourned from time to time on the plea that the government and the broadcasters are in talks on this issue.

The court has already directed that the order that TRAI would not take any action against any channel pending the petition would continue. In an earlier hearing, the court had, at the regulator’s instance, directed that all channels keep a record of the advertisements run by them.

The NBA had challenged the ad cap rule, contending that TRAI does not have jurisdiction to regulate commercial airtime on television channels. Apart from the NBA, the petitions have been filed by Sarthak Entertainment, Pioneer Channel Factory, E24 Glamorus, Sun TV Network, TV Vision, B4U Broadband, 9X Media, Kalaignar, Celebrities Management, Eanadu Television and Raj Television.

Meanwhile, the separate petition filed in the High Court by Vikki Choudhry and Home Cable Network Pvt Ltd., which too will be heard on the next date in September, seeks to charge MIB with dereliction of its duties to take action against offending pay TV broadcasters for violating the terms and conditions of the licenses/permission for Uplinking and Downlinking.

The Court had in June asked the Ministry to file its reply in four weeks. Notice was issued only to the Ministry, although the petition also listed several other broadcasting companies as respondents.
