Coffee With D….Funny man fails to garner TRPs!

MUMBAI: Making films on fugitives and terrorists from across the border has been attempted a few times but such films have never been able to convince the moviegoer because this is some fiction that seems totally implausible.

D Day, one of the better efforts at capturing the dreaded criminal Dawood, from across the border, despite its good script, face value and thrill failed to attract the audience. Coffee With D is meant to be a satire on the electronic media. This channel called Breaking News is losing TRPs and the management is on a two-month notice to either perform or perish.

The channel’s star anchor is Arnab Ghosh (Sunil Grover), a take on a real-life anchor that falls flat. His prime time slot is losing sheen and he is being shifted to a cookery show unless he thinks up of a miracle to save his place.

After much thinking and exchanging ideas with his wife played by Anjana Sukhani, herself a crime reporter, he gets this bright idea of interviewing D. But, it is not easy since nobody has seen his recent picture or knows his whereabouts. Grover’s ploy is to let D approach him rather than the other way round. The plan is to provoke D. Grover interviews various people from his old area, Dongri, in Mumbai, who all have only bad things to say about the don.

The vegetable vendor claims D (Zakir Hussain) never paid his dues while a gun vendor has the same thing to say. Also, a constable from the local police station has interesting stories to tell about how every time D was brought into the police station, he was clobbered black and blue! These interviews on daily basis are enough to provoke D who invites Grover to interview him.

Accompanying Grover are the channel’s news writer, played by Dipannita Sharma, as well as Vinod Ramani and Guru Singh, both of who posed as vegetable vendors, constable etc during the interviews earlier.

Once in Karachi, the interview with D proceeds on predictable lines till Grover gets a reminder from his boss, Rajesh Sharma, that the interview so far is not good enough. So, comes the last segment of rapid fire. Grover becomes aggressive and rather than ask questioning, calls D names, which unnerves him to the extent that he drops dead of a heart failure!

Coffee With D, to say the least, is scripted poorly, with no substance. The goings-on are insipid and lack humour. The last twist in the tale fails to make an impact. Mainly, because D is made to look and act like a buffoon!

Performances are routine even from talented artistes like Zakir Hussain and Rajesh Sharma. Sunil Grover sans his funny lines has no impact. Dipannita and Anjana are okay.

Coffee With D faces poor prospects.

    Producer: VinodRamani.
    Director: Vishal Mishra.
Cast: Sunil Grover, Zakir Hussain, Pankaj Tripathi, Rajesh Sharma, Dipannita Sharma, Anjana Sukhani, Vinod Ramani, Guru Singh.

  • Lose the hate, lose the fear, lose the shame with Voot’s ‘Untag’

Lose the hate, lose the fear, lose the shame with Voot’s ‘Untag’

MUMBAI:  After the success of its web series It’s Not That Simple starring Swara Bhaskar, Viacom18’s OTT platform Voot has announced another 6-episodic original series. Titled Untag, the series starts today.

The series is presented by Moto Z, and the association with the series goes far beyond just sponsorship as the brand is deeply embedded into the show.

It delves into the lives of regular people with seemingly harmless tags…their dreams, their inhibitions and most importantly their struggles. It gives the audience a fresh and light perspective of six characters, each dealing with their imposed tags, trying to become much more than what the world has labelled them as.

“At Voot, we focus on creating differentiated, yet relatable content that resonates with today’s digital generation. We are glad to announce the launch of our latest Voot Original ‘Untag’ – a story of people living with tags and how it’s important to go beyond such tags that prevent you from becoming the best version of who you are. We are delighted to partner with Moto Z for this series especially because Moto Z’s proposition of ‘Different is Better’ is also the key message that ‘Untag’ wants leave its viewers with,” said Voot head of content Monika Shergill.

The series has a power packed star cast featuring Meiyang Chang (Nischay), VJ Andy (Cyrus) Dipannita Sharma (Anahita), Shiv Pandit (Prithvi), Anjali Anand (Shikha) and Naveen Polishetty (Sumeet).

“We are quite thrilled with this association with ‘Untag’ on Voot. Like the Moto Z with Moto Mods enable you to break away from mundane smartphone usage and make it different by allowing you to transform it in a snap. Similarly, ‘Untag’ is a journey of 6 individuals who are trying to break away from the tags they have received from the society. The show looks really cool and different just like the Moto Z and Moto Mods. And we hope the viewers resonate with the key message of the show – different is better,” Motorola Mobility and Lenovo Mobile Business Group marketing head Rachna Lather.

Untag celebrates friendship, relationships, love and the uniqueness of each of these journeys. It is astory about losing the tags, the labels, the fear and most importantly the shame! It showcases the philosophy of you’re different, you’re better than the tag you’re given.

The series is scripted by Zaheer Shaikh and is directed by Ashima Chibber.

  • ‘Amit Sahni Ki List’…Listless watch

    ‘Amit Sahni Ki List’…Listless watch

MUMBAI: With shortage of original titles coupled with dearth of imagination, the new trend is to pick up a telephone list or some social media list, and you have a name for your film. This week we have this film called Amit Sahni Ki List. Your protagonist need not be a folk hero or a war hero, he could be just another dude you see stuck in traffic in the car next to you. Now, do you really care if he has a story to tell? He knows you don’t and, hence, most of the time he talks to himself, telling his story to himself!

Virr Das (notice the added R to the name? There seems to be a misgiving about numerology making up for poor content) is an IIM Ahmedabad alumni. He shares accommodation with a friend, Kavi Shastri, away from his parents. His mother converses only in net lingo while his father is always immersed in newspapers.

Virr has a steady job, a car and just about everything a young man could want, but his mother thinks it is time he got married and settled down. While Virr thinks that the girls suggested by his mother are far too traditional he has already prepared a list of merits he seeks in a girl to before he agrees to marry her.

It all starts with a girlfriend not letting him pass her door and then dumping him for another man already inside her flat. Looking at that girl, one does not see anything in her that is revealed in Virr’s list as the film unwinds. He probably made the list after him being unceremoniously dumped.

Virr has to meet a girl called Vega Tamotia, which his mother has suggested. The meeting point  is Leopold Cafe in South Mumbai .The side of Vega he is exposed to is that of a geek, bespectacled reading a book, her legs folded up on the restaurant chair. But soon Virr sees another side of Vega—a violin playing performer at a pub—and then another: a bungee-jumping sports girl. Drawn towards her he convinces himself that opposites attract.

The duo then gets engaged with both families joining in the celebrations. But, as things would have it, soon after the engagement, Virr meets another IIM graduate, Aniita Nair, who is a page 3-type girl and a business heir in a corporate house. Point by point, she conforms to all things on Virr’s list. Love blooms again, on both sides. But one has to wait and watch whether this love story will triumph.

The film has a limited star cast with nil following, and the director’s flashback to present narration, usually in first person, makes watching it a tedious affair. While the music is passable, the film has an interesting piece of violin recital which has been beautifully choreographed. Dialogues fail to convey a sense of humour. Virr Das is a consistent actor and does not change expressions whatever the situation. Anindita is fair. Tamotia is natural while Kavi as Virr’s roommate makes his presence felt.

Amit Sahni Ki List will remain limited to programme listings on pages of tabloids.

Producers: Tina Nagpaul, Kavita Kulkarni, Sujata Vemuri.

    Director: Ajay Bhuyan.

Cast: Virr Das, Vega Tamotia, Kavi Shastri, Anindita Naya.

‘Pizza 3-D’… Puts you off Pizza!

Pizza 3D was made originally in Tamil, dubbed in Telugu and then remade in Bengali and Kannada before it was adapted in Hindi. Not having seen the other versions, you wonder why there were so many remakes after watching the Hindi version. It just does not add up. Pizza pretends to be a horror film all along but turns out to be a suspense thriller. Either way, the question still remains: Why so many remakes, especially, the Hindi one?

Akshay Oberoi is a pizza delivery boy married to an aspiring horror story writer, Parvathy Omanakuttan. The latter is pregnant which leads to a small but totally irrelevant dramatic scene between the couple which has nothing to do with the rest of the film. The maker is whiling away the first 20 minutes or so just to add some unnecessary length!

Akshay’s wife is an orphan. Her parents have died in an accident years back. The only relevance is that they are broke, managing to survive out of her parents’ accident insurance. In short, they need money: and lots of it.

Akshay works for a Pizza joint named Slices. It is never shown to have any in-house clients (except towards the end), has one pizza chef and just two waiters who double up as delivery men!! And, to add to that, the boss, Rakesh Sharma, is a crooked man indulging in shady deals for one ‘Anna’. Bhai is passé, Anna is the new identity for the underworld!

Sharma treats his staff well but has his own problems at home. His wife is pregnant but possessed by a ghost; probably in the very womb she is carrying her child. Akshay, on an errand to deliver a box of chocolates to Sharma’s house bears the brunt of the boss’s wife and the ghost possessing her. Still, all that is happening on the screen is irrelevant and as Parvathy once says ‘Sama Bandhana’ as in creating an atmosphere! Creating an atmosphere of what is the question because nothing interesting ever follows.

Finally, the real story begins. Akshay gets an order to deliver a pizza. But, the place he has come to deliver the pizza to is a bungalow which has a history. Four years back the owner of the bungalow had axed his pregnant wife to death because he suspected her of committing adultery. The family may have died but the bungalow is now haunted by their hurt and harassed ghosts who lock Akshay in the bungalow and start tormenting him. They don’t plan to kill him so what is the whole exercise about? Turns out that camouflaged under the guise of a horror story, this is actually a suspense film about a perfect heist. Just to add to the message that crime does not pay, the makers go and spoil things by giving it a horror touch again before wrapping up.

Akshay Oberoi is a comparatively new face in films and Pizza is mainly his film with little participation from others. Akshay is satisfactory playing the victim of haunted house. Parvathy is okay. Rajesh Sharma is good as usual. Direction is average with an overdrive with the 3-D medium.

Pizza 3-D has no box office prospects.

Producers: Siddharth Roy Kapur, Bijoy Nambiar.

    Director: Akshay Akkineni.

Cast: Akshay Oberoi, Parvathy Omanakuttan, Dipannita Sharma, Rajesh Sharma, Arunoday Singh.

  • Ladies vs Ricky Bahl a pretty average fare

Ladies vs Ricky Bahl a pretty average fare

MUMBAI: Ladies vs Ricky Bahl is one of those products from Yash Raj Films where the process of limiting the budget starts with the casting itself. The burden of drawing the audience falls on the lead pair, Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma, with the other three girls being little known: Dipannita Sharma, Parineeti Chopra and Aditi Sharma. For the main location you have Goa, much exploited in recent films but not so well exploited in this film.

    Producer: Aditya Chopra.
    Director: Maneesh Sharma.
Cast: Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Dipannita Sharma, Aditi Sharma, Parineeti Chopra.

Ranveer Singh is a conman who picks only on women, mainly playing with their emotional vulnerability. He gains the confidence of the girl he zeroes in on as well as that of her family; to them he comes across as perfect groom material. He talks the family into some attractive moneymaking proposal only for them to realise that Ranveer Singh had vanished and so had their money. In his list of victims he adds Parineeti Chopra, Aditi Sharma and Dipannita Sharma.

Parineeti Chopra finds her gym trainer Ranveer Singh very attractive and falls for him in the blink of an eye. The only daughter, she has a moneybags of a father to whom Ranveer Singh sells a bungalow in upmarket Barakhamba Road in New Delhi. While the hero takes the first flight out of Delhi, Mr Moneybags lands in police custody for breaking and entering someone‘s property. The next target is a young widow in Lucknow, Aditi Sharma, cloth merchant. Her family is impressed by the zari work cloth material he shows them. He collects a huge order against a hefty advance before the girl and her family know they have been conned.

The third victim, Dipannita Sharma, is an ambitious corporate executive busy decorating the company premises. Ranveer Singh sells her a dud MF Hussain painting. When her case is reported on a news channel, the three victims contact each other, eventually forming a brigade to play a counter con and get their monies back from Ranveer. To lure their target, they engage the services of a salesgirl from a mall, Anushka Sharma, who never lets a visitor leave without buying something from the mall.

The film starts off on a promising note and does manage to hold interest until girls descend in Goa, where Ranveer runs his own small enterprise between conning victims. When the process of Anushka Sharma luring Ranveer into her trap starts the interest starts sagging. The three girls chasing as Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh do their thing is like kids‘ spying game! Whatever happens during this process is predictable and lacks twists and turns or exciting moments.

With a linear script, the narration is sans challenges too; direction being just usual. Music, considering the theme, is a letdown. While there are no sad scenes, there is no trace of humour either and the dialogue is routine.
Of the performers, Parineeta Chopra scores most points, playing her typical, rich, loud Delhi Punjabi girl; she fits the character to a T Aditi Sharma is mostly underplayed, that being her part. Dipannita Sharma is okay. Anushka Sharma is her natural self, not that her role offers any challenges. As for Ranveer Singh, it is very well to describe him as charming, handsome and smooth to establish his character but tough to convince the viewer.

Ladies vs Ricky Bahl a pretty average fare.

    Lanka has no entertainment value

Producer: ASA Production & Enterprises P Ltd.
    Director: Maqbool Khan.
Cast: Manoj Bajpayee, Arjan Bajwa, Tia Bajpai, Yashpal Sharma, Manish Choudhary, Yatin Karyekar.

Lanka is a film about a small town real life inspired story. The real life stories such as Lanka are one off affair and are not known to catch the fancy of all cinemagoer. Usually these stories are so bizarre, that they have no entertainment value and to make such a film and expect the urban multiplex audience to accept is foolhardy.

Tia Bajpai is a medical student having come to Bijnour where her father is posted as CMO at the local hospital; Manoj Bajpayee controls the town and his word is the law here. When he sees Tia Bajpai, he wants her to be his.

Soon he takes control of Tia Bajpai and her parents‘ lives; they are literally under house arrest, being watched 24 hours by Manoj Bajpayee‘s goons and the family is at his complete mercy, helpless as he comes at whim and fulfils his urge. The third angle is added with the entry of Arjan Bajwa, whom Bajpayee loves like kid brother and for whom Manoj Bajpayee is the ultimate idol; he does what is expected of him, generally play escort to Manoj Bajpayee and do the killings for him. Having noticed the plight of Tia Bajpyee, he can‘t stay indifferent for long; he is attracted to her and decides to go against Manoj Bajpayee and help her escape. The end is on expected lines. There are side tracks of rivalries between communities which are of little interest.

The subject is dry and can be described as a documentary genre at best, providing no scope for dramatics, music or humour. Performances are routine with Manoj Bajpayee doing what he has been doing in several films earlier, Arjan Bajwa is fair while Tia Bajpai fails to involve the viewer in her plight.

There is nothing to write about for the box office prospects of Lanka since none exist.

Zoom rolls out red carpet for ‘Glam Awards’

MUMBAI: Zoom, the lifestyle channel from the Times group has brought glamour to the forefront. The channel held the Tuscan Verve Zoom Glam Awards where it succeeded in letting subtle elegance take over from the flaunt-it attitude. Taking a step forward from two of its successful shows, Page 3 and Popkorn, the Glam Awards is a channel positioning statement.

Hosts Kamal Sidhu & Ash Chandler

Hosted by Kamal Sidhu and Ash Chandler, it was one of the glitziest nights for the glamour industry as local celebrities went for understated elegance in gracing this first time held event. Colours were everywhere with many opting for sophistication and class, emphasising a confident attitude as opposed to brashness.

Zoom looked to redefine the red carpet business by inviting a select gathering of people who epitomized personal style.Although the show looked to the past and present, it was also a powerful statement for a return of grace and sensuality in today’s fast paced life.

An anticipated 200 odd guests including celebrities, very limited media presence, socialites and trend-setters walked the red carpet into a world of glamour and prestige.

The celebrity culture has coined a phrase for its high profile glamour red carpet dressing. And, Indian style icons seem to be backing away from glitter. Speaking to Indiantelevision.com COO Upen Roop Rai said, “There has been incredible anticipation to this event. It went off even better than imagined.”

The event had international standard performances by Shibani Kashyap, Shaheen Shaikh, Carol Gracias, Anchal Kumar and Diandra Soares.
