  • Yash Raj Films to shoot three major films in UK from 2026, Starmer confirms

Yash Raj Films to shoot three major films in UK from 2026, Starmer confirms

MUMBAI: Bollywood is heading back to Britain. Yash Raj Films, India’s leading production and distribution house, has announced plans to shoot three major films across the UK from early 2026, creating over 3,000 jobs and injecting millions of pounds into the local economy, UK prime minister Keir Starmer revealed in Mumbai today.

The announcement was made at Yash Raj Studios, which marks 20 years of operations in India on 12 October, where Starmer was joined by top UK film representatives, including the British Film Institute, British Film Commission, Pinewood Studios, Elstree Studios, and Civic Studios. The visit forms part of a two-day trade mission aimed at strengthening UK-India ties and boosting creative industry collaborations.

The UK film sector contributes 12 billion pounds annually and supports 90,000 jobs, attracting international productions with its state-of-the-art studios and iconic landscapes. After an eight-year hiatus, Yash Raj’s return highlights the growing impact of the UK-India trade deal on cultural and creative partnerships.

“Bollywood is back in Britain, and it’s bringing jobs, investment and opportunity, while showcasing the UK as a world-class filmmaking destination,” Starmer said. “This is exactly the kind of partnership our trade deal with India is designed to unlock.”

Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani added, “The UK has always held a special place in our hearts. Iconic films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge were shot here, and we are thrilled to reignite our ties with the country that has always supported our creative vision. With the 30th anniversary of ddlj and the stage adaptation Come Fall in Love underway in the UK, this partnership couldn’t be more timely.”

UK culture secretary Lisa Nandy said, “Given the strength of our film industries and the deep cultural links between our nations, collaborations like this make perfect sense. Bollywood blockbusters filmed in Britain will drive growth, investment and creative exchange.”

A supporting MoU between the British Film Institute and India’s National Film Development Corporation will further strengthen co-productions, enabling filmmakers from both countries to share resources, talent, and expertise. Past collaborations, such as Slumdog Millionaire, generated around 300 million pounds for the UK from a modest 12 million pounds budget, proving the immense potential of UK-India film ventures.

Ever since the news went out, the Maratha Mandir management was flooded with requests to reinstate the movie based on which they decided to immediately reconsider their decision. Post this, it was mutually decided to continue the screening in the same 11:30 am morning show – without breaking the uninterrupted run of the movie.

Curtain call for ‘DDLJ’ at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir

MUMBAI: After a historic 1000 week run, the iconic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) made its final curtain call at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir on 19 February, 2015.

Post the 1000 week celebrations in December last year, the theatre had requested YRF to prepone the DDLJ morning show to 9:15 am instead of 11:30 am as it was becoming difficult for the cinema to accommodate multiple new releases every week with just three regular shows.

YRF obliged from 13 February, 2015. However, while the theatre management was happy to continue the film for as long as it continued to draw in the audiences, owing to logistical issues of their staff having to work inordinately long hours to accommodate an additional early morning show, it was mutually decided to end the films historic and record breaking run.

After playing for 1009 uninterrupted weeks, the films unprecedented performance has come to an end at the Maratha Mandir. The film played out in the 9:15 am today for the last time at the theatre.

The movie, which is directed by Aditya Chopra, stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the lead along with the late Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik, Mandira Bedi and Parmeet Sethi amongst others.

  • ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’ shows its charm at the BO

‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’ shows its charm at the BO

MUMBAI: The week’s release, an excuse to pay a homage to Yash Raj classic hit Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, is tagged as the poor man’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge which won’t stop minting some fast bucks for its makers. While Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania opened to a fair response, it was the strong positive response from those who watched it that benefitted the collections get better on the weekend that followed.

The film has collected about Rs 31 crore, a healthy take for the opening weekend, but is not expected to sustain as well as it enters the new working week.

For the record, two regional films which are creating some box office records locally are the Punjabi film, Punjab 1984 and Riteish Deshmukh’s Marathi film, Lay Bhaari.

Lekar Hum Deewana Dil, another third generation Kapoor clan starrer launching Armaan Jain, is very poor managing to collect just about Rs 2.5 crore in its first week. The pre-release promotion angle of the film was unimaginative to say the least.

Bobby Jasoos remained poor in its first week despite being a fair entertainer even if not up to the mark. The film collected Rs 10.9 crore in first week. It will be a loser.

Ek Villain is now an established hit. It also helps consolidate the standing of Shraddha Kapoor with another major hit to her name after Aashiqi 2. The film goes on to collect Rs 22.2 crore to take its two week total to Rs 99.4 crore.

Humshakal has come to the end of its poor run at the box office not making its presence felt at all in its third week.

Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty adds a symbolic Rs 55 lakh in its fifth week to take its total to Rs 110.77 crore.
