    Vengsarkar to receive lifetime achievement award from BCCI

    MUMBAI: One of India’s best batsmen ever and former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar, will be the recipient of the Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award. The cricketer has been nominated for the award by a committee comprising of senior media personality Shekhar Gupta, BCCI interim president Shivlal Yadav and BCCI honorary secretary Sanjay Patel. The award comprises a citation, trophy and cheque for Rs 25 lakh.

    Vengsarkar came into national prominence with a belligerent hundred for Mumbai against the Rest of India in the Irani Cup game at the start of the 1975-76 season. He is the only non-English batsman to score three Test hundreds at Lord’s. The third of those hundreds – an unbeaten 126 in 1986 – set up India’s first Test win at the venue. The second Indian to have played 100 Tests, Vengsarkar was rated the world’s number one batsman in the year 1986-87. Being a member of the Indian team that won the World Cup in 1983 and the World Championship of Cricket in 1985, he led India in ten Tests in 1987-89. He was chairman of the BCCI’s talent research development committee for three years, and the chairman of the All-India senior selection committee for the period, 2006-08.

    Meanwhile Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the winner of the annual Polly Umrigar Award, for being India’s best international cricketer of the 2013-14 season. The award comprises a trophy and a cheque for Rs 5 lakh.

    Sachin Tendulkar’s autobiography Playing It My Way released

    MUMBAI: The highest run-scorer in the history of international cricket, Sachin Tendulkar  who retired in 2013 after playing for an astonishing 24 years is back again. Tendulkar along with publishers Hachette India released his much awaited autobiography, Playing It My Way.

    In an hour long event, master of ceremonies Harsha Bhogle took the audience through Tendulkar’s life and the evolution of Indian cricket with interesting on-stage conversations with Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Vasu Paranjpe, and the famed ‘class of ’98’ (with Sourav Ganguli, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar himself). The formal book release saw Tendulkar present the first copy to his first coach and guru Ramakant Achrekar. This was followed by the final session which was a solo conversation with the author himself.

    Talking about the events captured in the book Sachin Tendulkar said, “Playing It My Way’ is a different sort of innings for me, and was in the making for the last three years.  As with the game, I have been honest and sincere in putting together various aspects of my life, and the book is something I hope readers will enjoy.”

    Hachette India managing director Thomas Abraham commented “This is an absolutely outstanding book–at once cricketing history and personal narrative; and will delight every cricketing fan. We are delighted to welcome Sachin Tendulkar to our list and are proud to be publishing this landmark autobiography which we’re sure, like its author will go on to set new records.”

    The book has in fact already set the Indian record for the largest adult hardback orders on day of release with 1,00,000 copies being released by the publishers.  While lucky guests got the chance to purchase early ‘launch’ copies, the book is heavily embargoed and was transported across the country under security for simultaneous release today.

    The book y releases as a hardback and simultaneous eBook from today. An audiobook version will follow early next year as will Indian language versions in Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati, Malayalam and Bengali.

    Zee DNA unveils Super Sixes Corporate Cricket Challenge

    MUMBAI: Zee Network and DNA (Daily News & Analysis) have announced the Zee DNA Super Sixes Corporate Cricket Challenge. Four ex-captains and leading international cricket players will team up with corporate India’s best cricket teams in the Zee DNA Super Sixes.

    The winning team gets an all expenses paid trip to watch India’s first 20-20 match against South Africa in Johannesburg and a Rolling Gold Trophy., according to an official release.

    The tournament will see players from corporate cricket teams playing alongside cricketing stalwarts such as Mohammad Azharuddin, Dilip Vengsarkar, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Arvinda Desilva, Romesh Kaluwitarna, Venkatesh Prasad and Nayan Mongia, the release adds.

    64 teams comprising six players will participate in this tournament. These 64 teams will be divided into four groups of 16 teams each. Eight teams will qualify for the semi finals. The qualifying matches will be played on 28 – 29 October and the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals on 12 November in Mumbai. Zee Sports will telecast highlights of the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals the following weekend.

    Speaking on the tournament, Zee Network CEO Pradeep Guha said, “Zee DNA Super Sixes is different from regular corporate cricket tournaments, both in format as well as composition. Indian & international cricket stars will be playing as part of the final eight teams.”

    Adding further, he said, “All members of the winning team will get an opportunity to travel to South Africa to watch India play South Africa in their first ever 20-20 one day game to be played in Johannesburg on 1 December 2006.”

    One International cricket player will be a part of each of the eight teams from the quarter-final stage onwards (four quarters + two semis + one final). Noted commentator & former cricketer Charu Sharma and Ayaz Memon have been roped in for commentary throughout the tournament. Kapil Dev will be the Chief Guest for the mega finals and will award the Rolling Gold Trophy to the winning team.
