Dilip Kumar gets Lifetime Achievement Award at JIFF
NEW DELHI: Veteran Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Indian cinema at the Jaipur International Film Festival.The actor was not present to receive the award due to health reasons. The award was received by Anupam Kher on his behalf.In a video message, Kumar’s wife and yesteryear actress Saira Bano said, “Dilip sahib will be very happy and feel to be honoured by with this award. Due to doctor’s advise not to mingle with crowd, he could not come to Gulabi Nagari to receive the award. His health is good after recovering from pneumonia in the past. It is lovely to be honoured for all of us.”Jaipur International Film Festival also gave the lifetime achievement award to Iranian film-maker Majid Majidi for his upstanding contribution to the cinema. -

Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan get Padma Vibhushan
MUMBAI: Legendary Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar and megastar Amitabh Bachchan have been conferred with the second highest national honour – the Padma Vibhushan – in the Republic Day honours this year.
A former Information and Broadcasting Minister, veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader LK Advani has also been honoured with the Padma Vibhushan.
India TV’s Rajat Sharma, Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua, carnatic composer and vocalist Sudha Raghunathan, and khayal and dhrupad classical vocalist Dr. (Pandit) Gokulotsavji Maharaj are also among the recipients of the Padma Bhushan.
The Padma Shri awardees include filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, wildlife and natural life filmmaker Naresh Bedi, veteran music director Ravindra Jain, lyricist Prasoon Joshi and author Tarak Mehta on whose writings the popular television series ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashma’ is based.
Recipients of Padma Shri from the music field include carnatic music vocalist A. Kanyakumari, Oriya singer and musician Prafulla Kar, Shillong Chamber Choir founder Neil Herbert Nongkynrih, music composer and singer Shekhar Sen and Hindustani classical vocalist Tripti Mukherjee, who is now based in the United States.
Cartoonist and ‘Chacha Choudhary’ creator Pran Kumar Sharma who died in August last year has also been named posthumously for the Padma Shri.
The Bachchan family now boasts of six Padma awards: Amitabh has earlier received the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan; his late father Harivansh Rai Bachchan received the Padma Bhushan, and his daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and his wife Jaya Bachchan have also received the Padma Shri.

The channel will premiere India’s first ever Technicolor movie – ‘Aan’
MUMBAI: Zee Classic, the Hindi movie channel that is known for showcasing movies from the golden era is all set to premiere India’s first Technicolour movie – ‘Aan’ that comprises of a stellar star cast including Dilip Kumar, Premnath and Nimmi.
When a poor Rajput villager Jai Tilak (Dilip Kumar) successfully wins a royal contest to tame princess Rajshree’s (Nadira) wild horse, he is instantly challenged to a game of fencing by her brother Shamsher Singh (PremNath) and wins. While Jai starts falling in love with the princess, her brother conspires to kill the king after learning that he isn’t in line for the throne and later assumes the throne.
An atrocious leader, his fate intertwines with Jai’s when he plans to imprison Mangala (Nimmi), Jai’s childhood friend and molests her. Mangala ends her life and Jai kills Shamsher in order to avenge Mangala’s death. This in turn provokes Princess Rajshree to launch an attack on Jai’s village. The battle ensues and Jai kidnaps the princess setting out to gain her love.But what Jai doesn’t know is that Shamsher is still alive!
Will he finally take control of the kingdom? Will the princess fall in love with the earnest pauper?

Karan Johar to host; Lata Mangeshkar to sing at Dilip Kumar’s autobiography launch
MUMBAI: Bollywood thespian Dilip Kumar’s autobiography ‘Substance And The Shadow’ launch, which will be held on 9 June in Mumbai, will be a historic moment! What with the who’s who of the film industry coming together and being actively involved into it.
Filmmaker Karan Johar will be the host of the mega book launch event! Lata Mangeshkar will light the inaugural lamp and begin the event by singing a few lines for Dilip Kumar followed by topnotch actors Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan unveiling the autobiography, documented by Dilip Kumar’s close friend Udaya Tara Nayar (writer/author).
While Big B will read a verse or a paragraph from the book, Aamir will recite a poem, written by Prasoon Joshi.
Other close pals and industry veterans like Dharmendra will read a few lines on the thespian; Vyjayanthimala will speak a few words in honour of the legendary actor.
Interestingly, Javed Ali and Shaan will perform a medley of Dilip Kumar’s evergreen hits, which has been composed by Lalit Pandit.
That apart, an audio visual-3D mapping video on the entire journey of Dilip Kumar will also be played at the event.
Shahrukh and Salman Khan might attend the launch event! Hema Malini, Madhuri Dixit, Tina and Anil Ambani, Kamal Haasan, Priyanka Chopra, Parineeti Chopra, Vidya Balan are also expected to grace the event!

Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan to launch Dilip Kumar’s biography ‘Substance and Shadow’
MUMBAI: Come 9 June and the long wait for the biography of Bollywood thespian Dilip Kumar will be over! The biography ‘Substance and Shadow’, which was earlier scheduled to be released on his 91st birthday, is all set to be revealed now in Mumbai.
The biography is written by author Uday Tara Nayar, who is also a close family friend of the Bollywood thespian.
The book will be launched by Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan and perfectionist Aamir Khan in the presence of Dilip Kumar, Saira Banu Khan, Lata Mangeshkar and Uday Tara Nayar.

Dilip Kumar’s unreleased film to hit the theatres soon
MUMBAI: The first superstar of Indian cinema may soon be making a comeback to the big screen. Yes, we are talking about Dilip Kumar, one of whose unreleased film from the 1990s is set for a theatrical release.

According to reports, Aag Ka Dariya starring Dilip Kumar and directed by VS Rajender Babu will be released sometime in Januray 2014. The reports confirm that the film didn’t see the light of the day earlier because of a financial dispute and also because the original print of the film was badly damaged in the intervening years. But Babu recently discovered a “perfect print” of the film with a distributor in Singapore and was surprised to find it that it was kept so carefully.
If the film releases, it may be considered 91-year-old Kumar’s last film. Interestingly, the film also stars actress Rekha.

Mughal-e-Azam named greatest Bollywood film in UK poll
MUMBAI: The Madhubala and Dilip Kumar starrer, Mughal-e-Azam has been awarded the greatest Bollywood film of all time by a poll celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema in the UK. As part of the survey conducted by British Asian weekly newspaper Eastern Eye, filmmaker K Asif’s 1960s epic beat off the tough competition to bag the top spot. Sholaywas ranked second.
It was a great moment of pride and honor for the entire family according to Akbar Asif, the son of the late filmmaker. For him, Mughal-e-Azam showed all the most impossible dreams that came true.
The iconic film not only smashed box office records when it was first released but was also successfully coloured and re-released in 2004. Its plot of a doomed affair between Prince Salim and courtesan Anarkali captured hearts all over the world and in 2006 it became the first Bollywood film to get a release in Pakistan after a gap of 41 years.
The results of the survey were drawn up by combining audience votes through various forms of social media, box office figures, cinematic impact and critical acclaim. The rest of the top 10 in the ‘100 Greatest Bollywood Movies List‘ include Sholay, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Mother India, Awaara, Deewar, 3 Idiots, Kabhi Kabhie, Andaz and Maine Pyar Kiya.
The lead stars with most movies in the top 10 are Amitabh Bachchan and Nargis, who feature in three each. The late Yash Chopra is the filmmaker with the maximum movies in the top 10 slots, two as director and one as producer.

Set of Dilip Kumar photos fetch Rs 162,000 at art auction
NEW DELHI: A still from Gangavataram (1937), the first talkie by and the last film of father of Indian cinema Dadasaheb Phalke was sold at an auction here recently for Rs 102,000.
The still was part of the Vintage Indian Film Memorabilia section featuring Hindi Cinema‘s forgotten and Silent Era (Black & White) memorabilia put on auction by Osian‘s Connoisseurs of Art.
This proved to be a major landmark for the evolving film memorabilia market and also showed the interest amongst people for film mementos.
There has been a growing participation of international museums and curators from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore in the bidding for vintage Indian cinematic heritage.
The other highlights in this section were the Dilip Kumar set of photographs at Rs 162,000 and Amitabh Bachchan with Rs 126,000.
The sale of vintage Indian film memorabilia was part of the art auction which fetched Rs 7,44,81,600 (90 per cent of value of the total lower estimate and 60.5 per cent of total quantity).
The recapturing of its leadership position by the Osian‘s Auction House, the impending launch of its arts, culture and cinema search engine – theosianama.com – and the forthcoming publication of 100 volumes on ‘Celebrating 100 Years of Indian Cinema‘ in collaboration with Mapin Publishing, will mark the re-emergence of Osian‘s as the pace setter in the Indian art and memorabilia market.
On the successful completion of the 1st Osianama Series Auction, Neville Tuli, Chairman, Osian‘s Group said "It is a slow and steady rebuilding process for the arts and cultural artifacts market. Without a strong Osian‘s it is very difficult for the market to achieve stability and confidence given that every area of arts and cultural infrastructure building is now linked to Osian‘s activities, from auctions to publishing & design, online search to museums, film festivals to conservation and archiving."

Film industry wants Bharat Ratna for Dilip Kumar
MUMBAI: The entire film industry from Rajnikant to Kamal Hassan to our artistes like Aamir Khan, Kamal Haasan, Yash Chopra, Mamooty, Rakesh Roshan, Subhash Ghai, Chiranjeevi, Ramesh Sippy, and Mukesh Bhatt have endorsed a petition appealing that Bharat Ratna be conferred on actor Dilip Kumar. The initiative has been started by Mahesh Bhatt.
Bhatt said in a statement, "Dilip Kumar, the icon is as old as the Indian film industry. He is the symbol of secular India and has an unmatched career record spanning from pre-independence years till the last decade."
With a plan to involve millions of Dilip Kumar fans in the initiative, a Facebook community Dilip Kumar for Bharat Ratna has been launched. The community has till date as many as 1000 members till date with its ranks swelling by the day.
The Facebook community supporting the petition includes names like Rajeev Khandelwal, Priyanka Chopra, Kajol, Randeep Hooda, Salma Agha, Runa Laila, Mukul Dev and Khalid Mohammad.
Reads the web page of the community, "The people of India would like to send their fervent request to the Government of India to confer the prestigious Bharat Ratna, India‘s highest civilian honour, to the best actor in the country, Shri Dilip Kumar."
Dilip Kumar, popularly known as ‘Tragedy King of Bollywood‘, started his acting career with Jwar Bhata in 1944 and then went on to act in classics like Andaz (1949) Deedar (1951), Aan (1952), Devdas (1955), Mughal-E-Azam (1960), Ganga Jamuna (1961) and RamAur Shyam among many others.
In 1994, the Government of India awarded the senior actor with Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Not, only in India, Dilip Kumar is highly regarded in Pakistan too. In the year 1998, Nishan-e-Pakistan, the highest civilian award of Pakistan was conferred upon the thespian.

Dilip Kumar’a biography to release on his birthday
MUMBAI: A book chronicling the life and times of living legend Dilip Kumar will be launched on the veteran actor’s birthday on 11 December this year. Written as a coffee-table book by film journalist Udaya Tara Nayar, the book has been supervised by the actor’s wife, Saira Banu.
The biography, which features rare photographs of the 90-year-old actor’s family and friends, traces his journey that started eight decades ago when he came to Mumbai.
It is being said that many writers who wanted to write Dilip sahab’s autobiography had approached him to grant them the rights. “We chose Udaya Tara because she is like a family member and Sahab has known her for a long time,” observed Saira Banu.
The book will be published jointly by Saira’s entertainment enterprise Sharp Focus and New Media Publishing House.
