2014: A year of change for GECs

2014 was a year of change and evolution for Zee TV. The game is not over yet, I think we are still evolving everyday and so are our audiences and that is the real excitement. This year, we saw a lot of buzz and excitement on the channel, around the new properties and we are carving our own identity year-on-year in the general entertainment space.

The channel created some extraordinary concepts in 2014 and now we are seen as a channel that has clutter-breaking ideas within the traditional format. We have launched shows with very different type of protagonists from Jamai Raja to Bandhan.

We also came up with a weekend block of Zee Super weekends with Maharakshak Aryan and Neeli Chatri Waale and the other non-fiction shows. So, there was an attempt to provide differentiated content to the viewers and yet something that they will be familiar with very easily. This year, we have also observed a very quick traction for all our new shows. Be it for Kumkum Bhagya or Jamai Raja and even Neeli Chatri Waale which has seen strong growth within eight and nine weeks of its launch.

We are happy that people are attracted to the differentiated content that we are providing. 2014 was also a year of experiments in the non-fiction category, right from finding talent in India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj to Dil Se Naachein Indiawaale. Moreover, we are now coming back to the traditional Zee show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs as we enter the last leg of the year.

The idea is to be happy with whatever you do because I think from a product and positioning point of view we have changed in the last nine months. We made a conscious shift about how we look and feel. There is certain uniformity in what we are doing and a certain sense of it coming together. The numbers have been good, so satisfied at that level. We are aligned with the legacy of Zee and yet evolving in a direction that we want to take the channel in.

I see the same evolution being mirrored in the rest of the industry as well. Channels are providing content that is in the familiar zone but with very different types of protagonists and very different propositions. You may feel like you are watching a show which is in a genre that looks familiar but the story, characters, subjects, the way stories are presented are all different. There is a sense of innovation which broadcasters are giving and audiences are accepting. I think this is a beginning of a good phase.

Not only Zee, but talking about the whole industry, what we as broadcasters will continue doing is living and breathing what our audiences want and giving them that.

In 2014, we at Zee have started a new journey and it will take us to a very different place from where we were before. I hope the audiences will be with us in the journey.

‘DID Super Moms’ back with season 2

MUMBAI: Not all shows can make superstars out of commoners, but a property that is considered to be the biggest home-grown reality show in India, Dance India Dance, has  been doing it for over five years now.

The show along with its various sub-franchises like Dance Ke Superstars, DID Dance Ka Tashan, Dance India Dance Li’l Masters, Dance Ke SuperKids and Dance India Dance Doubles, have had a successful run in the country.

One of its hit property, Dance India Dance Super Moms, launched last year along with other two big non-fiction properties, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa on Colors and Indian Idol Junior on Sony. And if numbers are to be believed, out of the three, DID Super Moms emerged out as the clear winner and opened with the highest ratings.

Following the success of the first season, the makers (Essel Vision Productions Limited) and Zee TV are back with the season two of Super Moms, to give a chance to mothers to spread their wings and bring out the talent hidden within.

The show will hit the television screens immediately after the on-going show – Dil Se Naachein Indiawaale goes off-air by November end.

The format remains the same. After a rigorous selection process, the 15-week series will have 16 finalists that will be shortlisted from across the country. The contestants will be divided in a group of four, and they will be coached by four best choreographers.

The auditions for the show has already begun from 7 October 2014 in Patna followed by other cities like Lucknow, Ranchi, Dehradun, Guwahati, Amritsar, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Nagpur, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Indore, Vadodara, Delhi and Mumbai.

Zee TV business head Pradeep Hejmadi believes that DID is a platform to identify and give to the industry a fresh pool of choreographers. “These are the guys who have raw talent in them but they are not actors. Choreographers are the people behind them who are making it possible. DID creates and identifies them. How we demonstrate their journey and how do we get audiences to start looking at these faceless people and start liking them for their talent and how they shape up is our format,” he says.

On the digital front, the channel has already started to create the buzz on the same. The official Facebook page was created on 4 October. Moreover, the promo of the show has already hit the television screens.

“I will take this Mannat to Delhi!” says Shah Rukh

MUMBAI: Everyone knows that Shah Rukh Khan’s sprawling, sea-facing mansion ‘Mannat’ – where he stays with his family – is his prized possession and a point of envy for countless others! But a young contestant named Mannat took the King Khan by surprise when she came to perform at the Ahmedabad auditions of Zee TV’s tour in search of India’s happiest dancer – Dil Se Naachein Indiawaale. All of six years old, Mannat is the youngest contestant on the show! She mesmerized the panel of celebrity judges aka the ‘Agents of Happiness’ the moment she set foot on stage. Cute Mannat captivated the audience and the judges alike with her act on song “Manwa Lage Re”, which left SRK & Deepika spell-bound!

So taken was Deepika by this young one’s cuteness that Mannat was practically seen sitting in Deepika’s lap throughout the remaining half of the show. In sharp contrast to the previous contestants – a group of old ladies who made Deepika their bahu and even had her touching their feet, Mannat clearly called out to Deepika’s maternal instincts. She looked visibly heartbroken when she had to let go of Mannat.

Even as the celebrity panelists raved about the li’l wonder Mannat’s flawless ‘Dil Se’ act which touched everyone’s hearts, SRK mentioned sweetly “I will take this Mannat to Delhi” where the show will reach its exciting grand finale.

Having scaled the pinnacle of brilliance in aesthetic and skillful dancing with DID, Zee TV has recently introduced India to yet another home-grown format … a genre of dancing that calls out to every Indian to brush aside considerations such as technique and training, just forget about their inhibitions and dance straight from the heart! Partnering with India’s biggest superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment & ZEEL’s creative and production studio Essel Vision Productions Ltd, Zee TV brings viewers the biggest Diwali entertainment extravaganza with the hottest celebrity panel ever – Dil Se Naachein Indiawaale. The show will be India’s first ever multi-city dance tour in search of the happiest dancer! Conducted through a joyride on a special ‘Happy Dancing’ bus, the tour has started off in Mumbai, has made pit-stops at Ahmedabad, Indore and will head to Delhi in the coming days with a star-studded panel called the ‘Agents of Happiness’ comprising none other than Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Farah Khan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah.
