BO: A bad start to 2014

MUMBA: It has been a dull scene at the box office windows all over as even the Salman Khan film, Jai Ho, has behaved way below expectations. The single screens were made to pay high MGs (the demand was “More than MGs paid for Dhoom3!). All stand to lose 50 to 60% of the MGs paid. They had a happy ending to year 2013 with Dhoom3 but have had a bad start to 2014. Also, there is no major film in sight in near future to rest their hopes on.

Salman Khan’s sermonising fare, Jai Ho, has not been able to draw crowds from day one. The audience seems to have a strong antenna about their choice and infer a lot from the publicity campaigns of a particular film. The film had a weak Friday and a Saturday which saw a drop instead of a rise in collections. The only saving grace were the Sunday collections which jumped by about 40% over its opening day figures. With an opening weekend of 57.2 crore, the film has not even managed to cross the mandatory 100 crore mark in its first week which is expected of any major star. The film ended its first week with 82.1 crore. It may just about manage to cross the 100 crore mark which still makes it a loser.

The solo release of the week, One By Two is a rank bad film and faced the consequences for being so. Lacking any story worth telling and a coherent script backed by poor handling, it failed to attract even a small fraternity of Abhay Deol fans. At many screens, there was ‘No audience, no show’ status. The film collected 1.4 crore for its first weekend.

Yaariyan, its mediocre content notwithstanding, has made its money. Having collected 32.05 crore in its first two weeks, the film has added another crore to its tally, taking its total to 33.05 crore.

Dedh Ishqiya has run out of steam by its third week. Adding just 80 lakh for its third week, the film’s three week take is 25.4 crore.

  • New Year jinx continues at BO with no big show

New Year jinx continues at BO with no big show

MUMBAI: The first Friday of a new year jinx continues to haunt as a film released on the first Friday of a year inevitably fails. But, having watched Mr Joe B. Carvalho, one is convinced first Friday or Diwali Friday, the result would have been the same; the film is bad. The film barely manages to cross two crore mark over its first weekend.

The 3-D experiment with Sholay does not click as the film meets with lukewarm response. The curiosity value of this being the legendary film Sholay or the fact that it was converted into 3-D format seemed to be missing. Having collected about 1.3 crore on Friday, the film did not show much improvement as it ended its weekend with 5.2 crore. At this rate, it may prove to be a costly experiment.

Dhoom 3, true to its title, continued breaking records even in its second week at the box office. The film collected 65.24 crore in its second week taking its two week total for Hindi screens to 245.25 crore. The film is steady over its third weekend with figures of 12.49 crore and adding 42 lakh for Tamil and Telugu versions. At the end of 17 days, the film’s total collections stand at 257.73 crore for Hindi and 12.49 from T&T taking its total recovery to 270.22 crore.

Mahabharat (animation) has not been able to cash in on Christmas vacations. The film has managed to collect 1.3 crore in its first week.

  • No big show at BO at yearend

No big show at BO at yearend

MUMBAI: The week’s sole release, animation film Mahabharat, with many big stars lending voices to characters modelled on them, fails to attract the kids at whom it was primarily aimed.

Their trust belied by most big releases, the exhibitors finally got a happy ending to 2013 with Dhoom3. Especially single screens that were arm twisted into paying huge MGs, which not even mass appeal films could recoup, are happy with this one, the fastest money spinner in Hindi film history with no fudging of figures by either the stars concerned or the production house. This one is headed to becoming the real, rare 200+ crore film at the domestic box office before it ends its second weekend. The film, which just about crossed 100 crore, in its opening weekend, maintained a strong hold on the box office to take the count to 180 crore for its Hindi version alone while totting up 189 crore with Tamil and Telugu dubbed version.

The Dhoom3 mania seems to have washed out the other runners as their collections have dropped to symbolic. R…. Rajkumar has dropped down to 55 lakh in its third week taking its three week total to 59.05 crore.

Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela has collected 20 lakh in its sixth week taking its six week tally to 105.45 crore.

‘Dhoom 3’ enters 100 crore club within three days: BO

MUMBAI: Coming at the end of 2013, Dhoom3 has proved to be the biggest genuine blockbuster of the year doing equally well in Hindi version in India as well as overseas and also doing well in its dubbed Tamil-Telugu versions. The film has achieved the rare honour of crossing the 100 crore collection mark in its opening weekend. The film has also earned the distinction of maintaining 30+ crore collections on all three days without a single extra holiday. The film collected 100.76 crore for the first weekend from Hindi screens (6.85 crore from Tamil and Telugu) setting a new benchmark for an opening weekend. The collections are reported to be very steady today (Monday) all over. For a change, exhibitors, especially the single screen managements, are happy with the film.

Surprisingly enough, R…. Rajkumar has done reasonably well in its second week in the absence of any opposition by collecting 16.2 crore and taking its two week tally to 58.5 crore.

Jackpot, however, remains on the lower side with collection figures of 4.7 crore in its first week.

Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela has added 2.1 crore in its fifth week to take its five week total to 105.25 crore.

What The Fish is poor with collection of 75 lakh in its first week.

Bullet Raja has collected 30 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to 32.6 crore.
