    Sangeeta Chacko receives ‘Bharat Excellence Award’ and ‘Rashtriya Mahila Gold Award’

    MUMBAI: Ms. Sangeeta Chacko, Head – Corporate Communications, Percept Limited, received the distinguished  ‘Bharat Excellence 2014 Award’ and the ‘Rashtriya Mahila 2014 Gold Award’ at the India International Centre in New Delhi on March 29, 2014.

     

    Ms. Sangeeta Chacko received the ‘Bharat Excellence Award’ for her exceptional contribution and excellence achieved in the domain of Brand Communications  and Public Relations spanning multiple industries across India & South Asia over the past 2 decades.

     

    The   ‘Rashtriya   Mahila   Gold   Award’   was   also   exclusively   presented   to   Sangeeta   Chacko acknowledging  her  unstinting  efforts  and  achievements  as  a  leading  female  protagonist  in  the Business Communications, Academic & Corporate Social Responsibility sectors in India.

     

    The awards which carried a Citation, Gold Medal and a Certificate of Excellence, was presented by Shri Chaudhury Randhir Singh, Former Governor of Sikkim, at a National Seminar entitled ‘Economic Growth & National Unity’.

     

    The  ‘Bharat  Excellence  Award’  and  ‘Rashtriya  Mahila  Award’  acknowledged  Sangeeta  Chacko’s vibrant  and  proactive  role  in  the  Communications   domain  and  paid  tribute  to  her  versatile  & pioneering styles of originality and creativity over the past 20 years. Her growing involvement and contribution towards the Educational sector, SME industries and CSR platforms served as further testimony to her growing impact and dedication to Social and National Welfare.

    SACF celebrates life and work of Dev Anand

    MUMBAI: The South Asian Cinema Foundation‘s (SACF) ‘A Musical Journey through the Dev Anand Era‘, reminded people of the golden period of Indian cinema recently when it celebrated the life and work of the late actor.

    The SACF event saw live performances by the young as well as veteran singers and instrumentalists and a running narrative by the film historian and the director of SACF, Lalit Mohan Joshi in the presence of Dev Anand‘s family members among others.

    Produced by SACF in association with the Nehru Centre, the programme presented a historical perspective of Indian Cinema‘s Golden Era.

    Dev Anand, who expired in December last year, brought together and nurtured great icons of the Indian film industry like SD Burman, Sahir Ludhianvi, Guru Dutt, Raj Khosla, Kishore Kumar, Geeta Dutt, Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar.

    After Dev Anand got his first major break in Ziddi in 1948, he formed his own film company Navketan in 1949. For the next three decades he produced classics like Baazi (1951), Taxi Driver (1954), CID (1956), Hum Dono (1961), Guide (1965), Jewel Thief (1967), Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971) and Des Pardes (1978).

    Suneil announces film on birth anniversary of dad Dev Anand

    MUMBAI: Paying his respect to his father Dev Anand on the late actor‘s 89th birth anniversary, his son Suneil has announced that he will make Vagator Mixer under the banner of Navketan Films.

    Vagator Mixer will be an English language movie based on the theme of the famous Vagator beach in Goa, said Suneil.

    Suniel said he will write the script, direct and play the lead role in the movie, which will be formally launched in December.

    Navketan Films‘ last film Chargesheet was incidentally the last film that Dev Anand had directed before his demise in London on 3 December, last year.

    Navketan Films was founded in 1949 by Dev Anand and his elder brother Chetan. The banner made films like Baazi, Taxi Driver, Funtoosh, Kala Pani, Hum Dono, Jewel Thief, Tere Ghar Ke Saamne, Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Guide.

    Last track of Kishore Kumar among artifacts set to be auctioned

    MUMBAI: Several film memorabilia artifacts and artworks including playback singer Kishore Kumar‘s last song, said to have been recorded just three days before his demise and yet remains unreleased are set to be auctioned at the upcoming 12th Osian‘s Cinefan Film Festival scheduled to be held from 27 July to 5 August in New Delhi.

    “I hope this auction inspires our collectors and the film fraternity to value its cinematic heritage more effectively,” said Osian‘s founder chairman Neville Tuli.

    Those memorabilia artifacts to be auctioned also include rare posters, costumes, props etc from various yesteryear films along with private family collection of Shammi Kapoor and eminent film producer Suresh Jindal.

    Also up for auction would be the turquoise ring set in silver and worn by actor Farooque Sheikh in Muzaffar Ali‘s Umrao Jaan, the cricket bat signed by Aamir Khan and the team from Lagaan, posters of Satyajit Ray‘s Uttam Kumar-starrer Nayak, The Great Gambler as well as black and white images from Dev Anand‘s album.

    Special highlights of the auction include a focus on late Bollywood legend Shammi Kapoor. His famous scarf from Junglee, the sweater from Andaz, the shehnai from his last film appearance in Muzzafar Ali‘s Rockstar and one of his favourite personal Mont Blanc fountain pens.

    NYIFF to pay tribute to Dev Anand

    MUMBAI: The 12th edition of New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF), scheduled to be held from 23 to 27 May, will pay a tribute to Dev Anand.

    A tribute will be paid to the evergreen hero with the screening of his film Hum Dono Rangeen, the coloured version of his black-and-white classic Hum Dono.

    The festival will also host the premieres of Rituparno Ghosh’s Chitrangada and Anurag Kashyap‘s Gangs of Wasseypur.

    Also to be screened at the event will be the Kashmiri film Inshallal, Football, Shyam Benegal‘s Zubeida, Mammo and Sardari Begum as well as Pakistani-Canadian journalist and filmmaker Obaid Chinoy‘s Oscar-winning documentary Saving Face.

    Other award-winning films from South Africa, Australia, and Sri Lanka along with India‘s regional language films in Tamil, Bengali, and Marathi will also be showcased.

    The festival would be attended by Kareena Kapoor, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, Anurag Kashyap, Rituparno Ghosh, Salman Rushdie and Mira Nair.

    MUMBAI: Though Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor were never seen together in a film, filmmaker Kadar Kashmiri has roped in their sons to feature in his ambitious film, Ali Peter John.

    The film, produced under the banner of Ashwin Kumar Productions, will feature both Suneil Anand and Aditya Raj Kapoor in pivotal roles.

    Averred Kashmiri, “A few days before his death, I had discussed the idea of Ali Peter John with Dev sahib. He liked the idea and asked who would act in it. So, I expressed my desire to cast Suneil. Dev sahab was excited about it. He, however, asked me to talk to Suneil directly.”

    Kashmiri, who has also directed Shammi Kapoor in Karamdata made in 1986, added: “I have been closely associated with both Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor. I have learnt a lot from them. I have seen their sons Suneil and Aditya grow up. It is an emotional moment for me to direct my friends‘ kids.”

    It may be remembered that both Suneil and Aditya have made their screen debuts. While Suneil made his debut with his father’s venture Anand Aur Anand in 1984, Aditya directed three films — Shamaal, ambar Salsa and Don‘t Stop Dreaming — and acted in two films — Chase and Mumbai 118.

    MUMBAI: The late Dev Anand, the creator of a wide array of 35 films, has been conferred with an unprecedented honour by the British Actors Union, Equity.

    In a gesture of sympathy and international solidarity, the British trade union for actors and entertainers has expressed the union`s sadness at the passing away of a non-union member: Dev Anand.

    The statement was presented in the form of a letter of condolence signed by the President of Equity Christine Payne, its General Secretary Malcolm Sinclair, and the Chairman of the Minority Ethnic Members Committee Shiv Pande, a spokesperson of the Navketan Trust has bared.

    “This letter is of tremendous significance as it demonstrates the international standing of the late Bollywood movie icon and pays tribute to Dev Anand`s lifelong contributions to the Indian film industry. This is the first time that an actor with no formal associations with Equity has been honoured in this way,” the spokesman said.

    Dev Anand breathed his last at a London hotel on December 3 at the ripe age of 88. He was involved in landmark films like Guide, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Johnny Mera Naam and Jewel Thief.

    Third Eye Fest ends with Rang Rasiya

    MUMBAI: The 10th Third Eye Asian Film Festival, that got underway on 22 December, screened as many as 100 feature films and 50 short films.


    The films were selected from among over 400 entries received from different Asian Countries including Iran, China, Japan, Israel, Philippines and Indonesia.


    The festival that had Turkey as the focus country, promoted and showcased several Turkish films like My Marlon And Brando, Uzak ( Distant) and Yamurta (Egg) that were earlier appreciated at other festivals around the world.


    The seven-day affair paid tributes to departed film luminaries like Ashok Kumar and Dev Anand whose cult film Guide was screened in the presence of his son Suniel. Tributes were paid to Ashok Kumar by screening of his B R Chopra-starrer Gumrah.


    The festival, that rolled with the premiere of the Chinese film 11 Flowers, ended with Ketan Mehta‘s Rang Rasiya.

    Subhash Ghai opens 10th Third Eye Asian Film Festival

    MUMBAI: Filmmaker Subhash Ghai inaugurated the 10th Third Eye Asian Film Festival yesterday at the Ravindra Natya Mandir Complex, Prabhadevi, Mumbai.

    The opening ceremony saw the ‘Asian Film Culture Award‘ bestowed on noted Afghani filmmaker Siddiq Barmak. Barmak‘s film Osama will be screened tonight.

    The award presentation was followed by the screening of the festival‘s opening Film, 11 Flowers, directed by Chinese director Xioanshuai Wang.

    Some of the other important films to be screened at the festival are Nuri Bilge Ceylan‘s Distant, Italo Spinelli‘s Gangor, Rajesh Pinjani‘s Babu Band Bajaa and Asghar Farhadi‘s A Separation. Iranian filmmaker Monir Qeidi‘s On the Way to Villa will also be screened at the Festival.

    The week-long festival has been dedicated to Dev Anand who passed away in London on 3 December. Incidentally, he had inaugurated the first edition of the festival in 2002.

    The festival will close on 29 December with the screening of Ketan Mehta‘s as yet unreleased film Rang Rasiya.

    MUMBAI: A Dev Anand Memorial has been planned in the newly reconstructed Anand Studio at Pali Hill, Bandra.

    Anand, who was never found without a muffler around his neck and a pen in his hand, will now be immortalised through the many things he made popular in a one of its kind. The memorial will house the legend‘s personal belongings along with the many film manuscripts, props, posters, slides among many other things.

    Suniel Anand said, “We do plan to preserve all the valuable memories… everything that was close to his heart. My father had an obsession for hats and pens. It was a part of his style statement. He was very fond of writing and he loved collecting pens of which he had a huge collection.”

    Apart from hats and pens, the evergreen star was also fond of scarves, sun glasses, jackets and watches. Observed Suniel, “He used to wear Tissot watches regularly. Those will be a part of the display in the memorial. A lot of his written work will also be a part of it. We want fans to know and understand the professional and personal Dev Anand.”

    Apart from building the memorial for his father, Suniel will also be completing his last project – the remake of Hare Rama Hare Krishna.

    Talking about the memorial, he further added, “My father had a fetish for hats and pens. It was a part of his style statement. He was very fond of writing and he loved collecting pens. He had a huge collection.”

    The memorial is expected to be opened for visitors after 10 months.

    Meanwhile, Suniel has also planned to re release Guide as part of his respect to his father. Speaking about the decision to re-release the film, he said, “An American company has restored Guide. It‘s being converted to wide screen and we will do a fresh soundtrack maybe in the Czech Republic. “It‘s a big, big responsibility. The world is watching me. I will have to live up to their expectations.”
