Priya Mishra quits Star Plus for Disney

MUMBAI: Star Plus’ Priya Mishra has shifted loyalties to Disney.
Mishra, who held the post of group head executive producer in Star Plus, has joined Disney as a supervising producer.

She assumed office at Disney on 13 September.

Mishra had quietly put in her papers at Star Plus on 31 August and has maintained a very low profile since then.

When contacted Mishra said, “Yes I have resigned,” but quickly added, “There was no friction between my higher-ups and I. The decision has been taken simply for better growth prospects.”

Mishra was in charge of five Star Plus shows – Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, Bhabhi, Kahiin To Hoga, Sanjivani – A Medical Boon and Dekho Magar Pyaar Se.

Mishra started in Star Plus as a senior producer in 2002, but was quickly elevated to executive producer followed soon after as group head executive producer. Prior to Star Plus, Mishra was an EP at Zee for a year.

“My new job sees me in a much more senior position. I will be involved with deciding and executing the content, especially on teenage programmes to begin with. I will be leading a team of 15 people. I have learnt a lot of things at Star Plus for which I shall always remain grateful,” she informs.

  • ‘Saara Akash’ continues to soar; gets year’s extension

MUMBAI: Will it or won’t it work? That was the niggling doubt when Saara Aakash, the show with an air force backdrop, debuted on Star Plus 7 August 2003 in the Thursday 9 pm slot.

Well, not only did Miditech’s Saara Aakash fare well (although after more than just a little tweaking of the original script) on the charts but it has been given another year’s extension.

“As of now, we are India’s No 1 weekly in the Hindi speaking markets. In the 9 pm band, comprising Kehta Hai Dil, Sanjeevani, Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, we are clearly the leader. We are also ahead of Sony’s Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahi and Kkusum,” Miditech’s producer Nikhil Alva offered.

While the show might have an air force back drop, the real reason why the show is doing well, according to the makers, is the central character Monica. “In fact, we have this punch line ‘Hamari Monica Jassi Jaissi bilkul nahi’ (Our Monica is not like Jassi at all),” joked Alva.

“Thursday is a competitive slot. Most of the weeklies end the week on Thursday, so it is wasn’t the most conducive spot for the show. We have successfully fended the competition in that slot. Be it against Jassi.. . or the movie premiers. Our target audience belongs to 14+ brackets, both male and female. Somebody who is not interested in the family dramas, which is same as that of Jassi…,” Alva offered.

Despite the female protagonist, the show has a lot of aspirational value. So when the show, during its early stages, digressed on to a family track, the ratings dipped. “It was a bad judgment on our as well as the channel’s part. But the mistake was immediately rectified and we have been in the top 10 shows on Star Plus ever since,” insisted Alva.

What, according to the makers is the high point of the show is its theme, approach and most importantly, the characters.

“Monica’s character is such that the audience can empathise with. She is a bold woman in a man’s world. While she has her feminine side (she is every inch the ideal daughter), she is also driven by her mission so much so that she won’t hesitate to kill someone if the need arises. Meanwhile, Sanjana’s character is unlike any vamp that you see on the telly today. She is shown to be a school teacher, someone with a soft side. But despite that she is a ruthless spy. She has hers reasons to act the way she does. It is all about her love for her country, mission and the things that have happen to her in the past,” explains Alva.

While it is likely that Sanjana’s character will be exposed in the show and the makers might decide to introduce another negative character. One character that is going to make his entry back onto the series is that of Karan, played by Anuj Saxena. Playing on topical issues, Karan will be shown as a PoW, who makes a daring escape from the enemy dungeons.

“Despite the channel not as keen on the publicity and the promotional blitz, but the topical plot around espionage and the Indo-Pak milieu have received great feedback,” Alva exhulted.

Interestingly, the high point of the show has been the episode where the central character Monica was behind enemy lines. “We showed a 15-minute chase sequence, which traditionally no one would believe works. But it has given us 13.8-14 TRP rating,” gloated Alva.

But is there any likelihood that Monica might go the family way ever? “Highly unlikely,” says Alva. Maybe that’s for the best then.

  • ‘Kasautii’ edges past Balaji siblings to reign over ratings

‘Kasautii’ edges past Balaji siblings to reign over ratings

MUMBAI: Once might be perceived as the luck of the draw. But two weeks running certainly raises questions?

Balaji offspring Kasautii Zindagi Kay, for long the lesser sibling of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, has shot past both to lead the stakes for the second week in a row in the ratings just released by TAM for the week ended 24 May 2003.

Kasautii …has usurped the first three slots dominated by the other two ‘K’ serials in the last two years. More importantly, Kasautii… has helped pull the ratings scorecard into double digits once again. In a slot occupied once by the mighty Kyunki… with TVRs that went over 12, Kasautii…today is at a respectable 10.9.

However, another slow and steady winner, Aruna Irani’s Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, which topped the heap for the week ended 10 May, continues to hold its own against the mighty Balaji rivals, save Kasautii…, of course. Des Mein… this week appears at the fourth spot with a TVR of 9.5 (erstwhile Balaji star Amarr Upadhyay who split with the production house to try his luck in films, is back on the small screen with Des… for the last one week, incidentally).

Kyunki… makes its appearance only at the sixth place and Kahaani…. finds pride of place only further down at the eighth place, with a TVR of 8.1.

Are the two mighty pillars of Star Plus’ programming finally entering their autumn period? Another week of similar ratings and it could be said with more certainty whether there is a trend developing here.

Will the next few months see a battle royale between Ekta’s Kasautii…. and Irani’s Des Mein….? The ratings will tell.

  • Twists in the tales on Star Plus

Twists in the tales on Star Plus

MUMBAI: ‘Change is always constant’,as far as Star Plus is concerned.

After the launch of six new shows in January 2003, Star Plus is now focussing on revamping the existing shows to keep loyal viewers happy and looking out for more.

Kyunki …. , Kahaani… and Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, the three soaps which garner enviable TRPs for the channel, “are heading for dramatic twists and turns in their storyline” say Star officials.

Interestingly, Des Mein….., the weekly on Star Plus has adorned a new look in terms of montage and is headed for an unexpected twist in storyline.

Reliable sources confirm that the male lead, Dev (played by Varun Badola) who is torn between love for his wife Pammi (played by Sangeeta Ghosh) and Anu’s ( played by Sweta Keswani) gameplan will die, thus giving an unexpected turnaround to the serial.

“The audience is in for a big surprise. I am thoroughly enjoying my role in Des Mein …… as it’s going to undergo a dramatic change,” said Sweta Keswani who refused to divulge further details.

Kyunki …. and Kahaani … too, as reported earlier are headed for an overhaul. Kyunki has already moved to Australian shores and a few upheavals in the lives of central characters are in the pipeline. Though one can slate the so called ‘dramatic twists in storyline’ as attempts to lure viewers during the World Cup, only time will tell if they succeed. However , presently the strategy adopted by the channel seems to be working to its benefit.
