Des Mein… to invoke sense of dj vu for Star Plus viewers tonight

MUMBAI: Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand seems to be going the Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi way.

    Ashlesha Savant
Tonight’s Des Mein… episode will have Ashlesha Savant, currently portraying Mouli in Star Plus’Kahiin To Hoga, making her appearance as Dev’s (Amarr Upadhyay) wife. For those who came in late Upadhyay is currently suffering a bout of amnesia after an accident. To complicate matters, Dev has gotten himself a new face thanks to plastic surgery after said accident. Needless to say, Upadhyay replaced Varun Badola when the face change occurred.

As for Savant, she was bumped off Kyunki… a few months ago. As Teesha, Savant had a fatal accident when Mandira Bedi’s car clashed with hers. Now roped into Des Mein, Savant claims to have been married to Upadhyay when the latter suffered a loss of memory after his accident.

Both Savant and Upadhyay are Balaji actors who have made their way into Aroona Irani’s production. Is Irani going the Ekta way, with characters losing their fidelity along with their memories after having accidents? The Kyunki story had followed a similar track when Mihir of Kyunki had an accident, lost his memory and then got into a marital relationship with Mandira, when the first wife was still alive and kicking.

  • Star Plus to marry ‘Kasauti’ and ‘Des Mein’ in special show

MUMBAI: For probably the first time on Indian television, Star Plus is marrying two prime time rival shows in a programming coup of sorts
Prerna (Shweta Tiwari) and Anurag (Cezanne Khan) in Kasautii Zindagi Kay

On 27 October, the week when both Kasautii Zindagi Kay and Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand turn two years old, Star Plus has decided to try a novel tack by bringing both serials together in a special one and half hour episode. The channel seems to have landed a programming coup of sorts by getting Kasauti producer Balaji Telefilms and Des Mein producer AK Films pool their talents for this special one off, although the title of this particular episode is yet to be decided, say channel officials. Will it be Kasautii Mein Niklla Hoga Chand
Pammi (Sangeeta Ghosh) in Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand

As per the proposed show outline, to be aired from 8:30 to 10:00 pm, Anurag Basu’s sister Tapur fromKasautii will tie the knot with Pammi’s cousin Bubbles Singh from Des Mein on the special episode, bringing the Basu and Singh families together. This also throws up interesting possibilities about the future course the two shows could take, but the channel is not saying more as of now, except to maintain that this is possibly the first time such an innovative twist is being introduced on any show on Indian television.

  • TV producer Aroona Irani celebrates the success of ‘Des mein…’

TV producer Aroona Irani celebrates the success of ‘Des mein…’

MUMBAI: It was celebration time at Mumbai’s ITC Grand Maratha Sheraton Hotel on Saturday, 31 May, 2003. Veteran actress and famed producer Aroona Irani held a bash to celebrate the success of her Star Plus soap Des Mein Nikhla Hoga Chand (DMNHC). She became the first independent producer to beat Balaji in the ratings game in recent times.

The serial conceptualised and created by AK Films has had an uninterrupted run of 84 episodes since 2001 in the prime time slot of 9 pm. The serial DMNHC had ousted the usual Balaji contenders -Kyunki ….. Kahaani … and Kasauti Zindagi Kay …..from the top position, reveal the latest TRP ratings (for the week 5 May to 10 May 2003).

DMNHC topped the chart with a TRP of 10.9, followed by Kasauti …at 10.5 and Kyunki …at 10.3. However, in the recent ratings provided by TAM (week 21 for 18-24 May), Balaji’s Kasauti… has grabbed the top three spots (10.5) followed by DMNHC with a TVR of 9.5.

In the presence of her unit and several TV stars, Irani, dressed in a blue coloured saree, attributed the unprecendent success to the gripping storyline. “The storyline has a social fervour that blends two varying cultures – the western NRI (non resident India) and our own traditionally soaked Indian ethos. Not a pebble has been left unturned to make the serial visually rich and technically up-to-date to match the core narrative. The storyline also emcompasses an interesting romantic interlude,” added Irani.

Present on the occasion were TV stars such as Sangeeta Ghosh, Shweta Keswani, Siddharth Dhawan and Varun Badola. Also making his presence felt was Amarr Upadhyay who returning to the small screen after his insipid feature film debut.

  • ‘Des Mein’ ousts ‘Kyunki..’ & ‘Kahaani..’ from No. 1 position

MUMBAI: Is it a sign of things to come or is it the ‘fatigue element’? Aruna Irani’s Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, ( DMNHC) has ousted the usual Balaji contenders -Kyunki ….. Kahaani … and Kasauti Zindagi Kay …..from the top position, reveal the latest TRP ratings (for the week 5 May to 10 May 2003). DMNHC tops the chart with a TRP of 10.9, followed by Kasauti …at 10.5 and Kyunki …at 10.3.
Earlier this year, the India-Pakistan World Cup 2003 cricket match on MAX had dethroned the two Balaji soaps and notched up a TVR of 21.8.
Although the producers were not available for comment, industry sources say that the spurt in ratings for DMNHC can be credited to the recently introduced and unusual twists and turns in the ‘gripping’ storyline.
The story revolves around Pammi (Sangeeta Ghosh) – her dilemmas centred around her love for her husband Dev( played by Varun Badola) who is assumed to be dead. Pammi gets engaged to a doctor named Rohan.
The unusual twist comes when Dev realises that he doesn’t have brain tumour as he was forced to believe by his sister-in- law, Anu ( played by Shweta Keswani) . He thus realises that since he was not terminally ill, he could reveal to Pammi that he was alive. Unfortunately, on his way to meet Pammi, he is intercepted by Anu who confesses her love for him and dashes her car into his , in the hope that she would be united with him after death. The accident however leaves Anu with minor scars and Dev in a critical condition in the hospital where Rohan ( Pammi’s fiancĂ©’) recognises him.
Another interesting twist is not yet confirmed, but according to latest industry gossip, Varun Badola will be replaced by Amarr Upadhyay (Mihir of Kyunki……) post the accident.
Coming back to the ratings, Star Plus continued its dominance in the TRP charts, with its shows bagging 49 out of 50 top programmes in the C& S households.
Kehta Hai Dil, the family show inspired by The Picket Fences has shown an improvement in ratings with its TRPs jumping from 8.0 to 9.3 in a week’s time . On the other hand Sanjivani, the hospital series turned soap has not shown much change in its ratings. It remained stable at 7.8 with its position falling down from 20 to 21.
Among comedies, Shararat which airs at 9:00 pm on Star Plus, harnessed a TRP of 6.1. Son Pari the kids programme too got a TRP of 6.1. In the action thriller genre, the series Krishna Arjun which airs on Mondays on Star Plus at 9:00 pm seems to have got a good lead of 5.5 over its counterpart Ssshhh.. Koi Hai… which airs on Fridays on Star Plus at 10:30 pm which has got a TRP of 4.4.
Among the afternoon programmes Kumkum seems to be doing much better than Bhabhi. While the former got ratings between 6.1 and 5.2 through the week, the latter’s ratings shuttled between 4.8 and 4.3. Shagun on the other hand got a rating of 3.7.
Interestingly, the last episode of the much hyped short series Kashmeer which (with a TRP of 3.1) didn’t figure anywhere in the top 50 programmes last week, found the 47th position this week with its TRP going up to 3.6.
While Star Plus continued its dominance in the TRP charts, it is the Balaji soaps which have lost the top position this week. However, it is only next week’s ratings which will reveal which soap rules the roost – the K series or DMNHC Till then let’s wait and watch.
