    Delhi to get its own international Film Festival in centenary year of Indian cinema

    NEW DELHI: A total of 98 films have already found entry into the first Delhi International Film Festival to be held in December this year to coincide with the centenary of Indian cinema and a century of Delhi as the capital of India.

    The Festival, being organised by the Social Circle, will be held from 21 to 27 December and will have ten different sections. It will take place at the Sirifort Auditorium and the NDMC Convention Centre.

    Actor-filmmaker who recently made ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ and also acted in ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ along with actor Shiney Ahuja launched the website of the festival, www.delhiinternationalfilmfestival.com.

    Senior film journalist Ram Kishore Parcha, who is President of the Festival, said there had been a vacuum of an international film festival since the International Film Festival of India was shifted to Goa, and there was also a need to have a filmmaking hub in north India. This festival would fulfill all these needs.

    He announced that thespian Zohra Segal who had turned 100 would be presented a Life Time Achievement Award at the first festival.

    Festival Vice-President Sanjay Singh and Festival Secretary Suresh K Goswami (a senior filmmaker himself) introduced various sections of the Festival.

    Tigmanshu specifically underlined the fact that at least 2,500 similar festivals existed not only in the big cities like London, New York, Paris, Tokyo Beijing etc., but also in smaller towns. International Film festivals were also being held in many cities like Mumbai, Goa, Kolkata, and Thiruvananthapuram.

    Returning to films after a gap and associated with the Festival, Ahuja said it was a novel and artistic platform for countrywide film actors and makers. Ahuja was born and brought up in Delhi, where he also completed his education.

    The legendry Malayalam Filmmaker and Dada Saheb Phalke awardee Adoor Gopalakrishnan is Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Festival. The Board consists of Anurag Kashyap, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Sandeep Marwah, Shriram Raghavan, Uma Da Cunha, Shiney Ahuja, Yashpal Sharma, Shonali Bose, Sushma Parcha and Bela Negi from India, Alain Jallladeau, Phillip Jalladeau from France, Jamal Shah, Satish Anand from Pakistan, Sajedur Rehman Firoze from Bangladesh, Reza Degati from Iran, Andrej Karawakoski Avner Faingulernt, Erez Pery, Lina Murad from Syria, and Kai Syng Tan from London. About 80 Actors from India and overseas are also connected with this festival.

    The best amongst selected films will be honoured with the Golden Minar and Silver Minar awards respectively. The festival in its first edition will not only honour the films, filmmakers, artists and writers, but will also honour outstanding persons who have excelled in their contribution towards the welfare of society and the people with Minare Dilli award.

    Classic Films from Overseas and India are included as special sections along with Delhi Scope section in the festival. Retrospective, Tributes and Homage sections will include films of Dev Anand, Balraj Sahni and other legendary filmmakers and actors. This section will also include films of Adoor Gopalakrishnan and the distinguished actor Soumitra Chatterjee from Bengal.

    The festival will showcase at least 150 films from nearly 70 countries, according to Goswami. The World Cinema section will showcase films like “Daughters of Hill” by Patrizia landi, “The Artist” by Michel Hazanavicius, “Jeremiah” by Eran Paz, “Love Bird” by Susan Collins, “The Sunshine” in The Corner by Sun Hao Young, “Mar” by Caner Erzincan and many more. India’s Zia-Us-Salaam is on the International Jury.

    A special section called NRI Cinema has been included in the festival. Under this section at least 15 films by Non Resident Indians living in different parts of the world will be show cased. In this section films like “A Gran Plan” by Sangeeta Nambiyar of Singapore, “Oas” by Shiv Tiwari of New York, “The Happy Pulse” by Jay Bajaj of Canada, “Children of God” by Foukia Akhtar of United Arab Emirates will be showcased and the best film will be awarded the Golden Minar.

    In addition to the Non Resident Indian Films, a section dedicated to the NRI writers has also been specially included in the festival in which a poetry collection book shall be launched as well. The book is edited by none other than the well-known senior journalist, Poetess and writer, Anita Kapoor from California. The best poem in this collection will be honoured with the Silver Minar.

    Various seminars, panel discussions and workshops shall be organized during the festival. The Festival has a dedicated section for the artwork from all over the world, the theme of which is the Cinema and Delhi. The art work will have a special exhibition during the festival and the best artwork will be honoured with the Silver Minar Award.

    The organisations that have partnered with the festival are Broadway International Film Festival, Los Angeles, South Cinema South Film Festival, and JMT from Israel, Slade school of fine arts, London, Film factory china, Turkish Film Industry, Cinetech Nationale Mexico, Brazil films, Media Box Bangladesh, Hunarkada from Pakistan, Film Boutique from Germany, Second largest Nantes film festival of France and French cultural centre.

    The Owner to premiere on 25 May

    MUMBAI: The Owner, a film made by 25 filmmakers on 5 continents, is set to premiere in various cities of the world including Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore on 25 May.

    The story, written jointly over the internet, brings together a variety of cultures, languages and film styles into a singular narrative plot.

    The film follows the adventures of an old backpack on a journey around the world. The bag is passed from character to character, country to country, on its way back to its owner—a man whose identity is the central mystery of the film.

    Initially the film will be premiered in Bangalore, Berlin, Bogota, Chicago, Detroit, Dubai, Dublin, Holmfirth, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nairobi, Newcastle, New York, Rio De Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Vienna.

    The film has been produced by Collabfeature, an international co-production film group. The outfit‘s second project Train Station is currently being shot across the world.

    DDB Mudra-Delhi appoints Radhika Das as VP

    MUMBAI: DDB Mudra has appointed Radhika Das as vice president.

    Das is joining in from O&M where she was working as director-client services.

    Based in Delhi, she will be in charge of clients handled out of Delhi office, like Dabur Jaypee, Nestle and Mother Dairy.

    DDB Mudra Group president Vandana Das said, “As part of the journey ahead, I see Radhika as a key player in the Delhi team to nurture client relationships, build brands and also to help us grow.”

    On her new role Radhika Das added, “I‘ve worked with Mudra in my earlier years and given the extremely enriching experience I had, I’m absolutely delighted to be back again. I‘m looking forward to a long innings and being a part of the evolution, the organization is witnessing.”

    Bollywood by Gulzar finds special place in Delhi’s literary festival

    NEW DELHI: Delhi’s own literary festival Spring Fever 2012 this year attracted special participation from Bollywood.

    The third annual literature festival of Penguin Books concluded on a high note in the evening with the legendary veteran poet and lyricist Gulzar reading out his best poems from his recently launched book ‘Neglected Poems‘.

    “Epics may seem distant from our modern-day lives, but that is not right. After Pawan wrote this episode from the Mahabharat in relevance with people`s lives today, I realised it should reach out to more people,” he said.

    “Translations are very important these days, since an average person can only know two to three languages. We have so many languages in India and poems are being written in as many of them. Also, a translator should be well-versed in both languages, the original and the one in which he is translating,” he added.

    Penguin Spring Fever 2012 also saw the participation of authors like Anupam Kher and Raghav Bhal.

    The topics covered during the ten day festival varied from ‘Sex and romance outside the bedroom‘ to the ‘New Indian Consumer‘.

    A unique Bollywood quiz was held with a special round on superstar Rajnikanth, apart from performances by bands like Faridkot, Vedas and Qawwali.

    PVR posts Q3 net profit of Rs 89 mn

    MUMBAI: Delhi-based multiplex major PVR has reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 89.2 million for the three-month period ended 31 December 2011, compared to a net loss of Rs 132.6 million in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal.

    Total income went up marginally by 4.01 per cent to Rs 1.39 billion, from Rs 1.34 billion in the year-ago period.

    The company said that during the quarter it had 6.6 million footfalls in its cinemas, up 28 per cent from the corresponding quarter of last fiscal.

    Admissions revenue jumped 15 per cent while food and beverage revenues have shown a growth of 40 per cent. Advertising and sponsorship revenues, too, went up 26 per cent over the corresponding period last year.

    Meanwhile, total expenditure of the company declined 9.88 per cent to Rs 1.23 billion, as against Rs 1.37 billion a year ago.

    The movie exhibition business saw a segment profit of Rs 164.4 million in the quarter as compared to a profit of Rs 142.6 million in the year ago period. The revenue from the segment was Rs 1.26 billion (from Rs 1.03 billion).

    PVR deployed a capital of Rs 3.88 billion on the movie exhibition segment, as of 31 December 2011.

    In the movie production and distribution segment, the company registered a segment profit of Rs 4.9 million, compared to a loss of Rs 178.2 million a year ago. Revenue from the segment stood at Rs 102.5 million (Rs 302.5 million in the year ago).

    Capital deployed on the segment was Rs 1.07 billion, as of 31 December.

    Shares of PVR closed 5.71 per cent down at Rs 138.90 on the BSE.

    Entries invited for the best Indian films for the 59th National Film Awards

    NEW DELHI: Entries have been invited by the Directorate of Film Festivals for the National Awards for features and non-feature films made in 2011.


    Only Indian films certified by the Central Board of Film Certification between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2011 would be eligible for the 59th National Film Awards.


    Entries have also been invited for the best book on cinema and for the best film journalist/critic, published during the calendar year 2011.


    The last date for entries is 17 January 2011. All films must have English sub-titles.


    The regulations are clear that any person found influencing the jury in any way would be disqualified from entering films for three years.


    There will be a two-tier system of Regional Jury and Central Jury for making selection for the various categories of awards as specified. The Central jury and five Regional Juries will hold their meetings in Delhi,


    The five regional juries will be:



    • North: One Panel for films in Hindi, Punjabi, Dogri, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Urdu, English and Central Indian Languages.

    • West: One Panel for films in Marathi, Gujarati and Konkani

    • South I: One Panel for films in Tamil and Malayalam.

    • South II: One Panel for films in Kannada, Telugu and Tulu.

    • East: One Panel for films in Bengali, Assamese, Oriya, Manipuri and dialects spoken in North East.

    Each Regional Panel would comprise a chairperson and one member (both of whom would be selected from outside the region) and three other members from within the region.


    The Central Jury will comprise a chairperson and 10 members and the chairpersons of Regional Juries would serve on the Central Jury. The book jury will have three members.


    Awards in features will be given in 29 categories, apart from the best film in a regional language recognized under the Constitution or English. There will be 22 categories in non-features.

    MUMBAI: Zee TV, the flagship channel from the Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (Zeel) stable, conducted flash mobs across various parts of Mumbai and Delhi on the Christmas Eve to increase viewership and brand effectiveness of season 3 of its popular dance reality show, Dance India Dance.

    On 23 and 24 December, many parts of Mumbai and Delhi saw a mob of nearly 50/100 people all dressed as collegians, shopkeepers and local residents, shaking their legs on Bollywood numbers.

    The dancemob was an initiative that was a part of the 360 degree campaign that the channel has planned during the launch phase of the show.

    With an aim to create a buzz on Dance India Dance Season 3, the dancemobs were conducted in various locations like Rajouri Garden market, PVR Anupam (Saket) and PVR Satyam (Janakpuri) in Delhi while in Mumbai they were conducted at Cinemax Andheri and PVR Phoenix Mall, Lower Parel.

    A similar activity was conducted on 24 December at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Churchgate stations.

    The channel has started airing auditions episodes since 24 December at 8.30 pm weekend band.

    PVR Q2 net up 58% at Rs 142 mn

    MUMBAI: Delhi-based multiplex major PVR has reported a second-quarter consolidated net profit of Rs 142 million (after minority interest), a 58 per cent jump from the year-ago period.

    Total income, however, saw a marginal (2.7 per cent) increase to Rs 1.39 billion, from Rs 1.35 billion.

    Meanwhile, total expenditure of the company stood at Rs 1.18 billon, same as the year-ago period. The cost on account of film distributor share went up from Rs 274.6 million to Rs 347.1 million.

    The movie exhibition segment saw a profit of Rs 212.5 million, from Rs 154.2 million a year ago. Revenue from the segment jumped 20.6 percent to Rs 1.28 billion, as against Rs 1.06 billion in thecorresponding quarter of the previous fiscal.

    PVR has deployed Rs 3.62 billion on the movie exhibition segment as of 30 September.

    From the movie production and distribution business, however, the revenue came down to Rs 83.8 million (from Rs 290.2 million), while PVR‘s profit from the segment was at Rs 11.3 million, compared to Rs 8.7 million a year ago. Capital deployed on the segment was Rs 1.1 billion.

    PVR joint MD Sanjeev Kumar Bijli said, “The revenues and profitability in Q2, 2011-12 has shown a robust growth over the corresponding period of previous year. The good results is a function of company‘s long term location strategy to partner in best mall developments in the country, its unique design philosophy, strong customer focus and a unique brand positioning . This is demonstrated by the fact that PVR‘s average revenue per screen across its cinema circuit is almost 30 per cent higher than our competition. Infect, in area of advertising and sponsorship revenue our total revenues for 2010-11 were more than the revenues of next three operators put together.”

    “The company is on a strong growth trajectory and is adding 57 new screens this fiscal year. The company‘s subsidiary PVR bluO is also setting up bowling centres across the country with three new centres with 74 lanes slated to open in current financial year,” Bijli added.

    During the quarter under review, the company added three new multiplex
    properties with 16 screens at Udaipur, Surat and Delhi. It also opened its new flagship bowling centre with 26 lanes at Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj.

    As part of the mandate, Publicis Groupe‘s agency will handle all communication development for the Carlsberg and Tuborg beer brands in India.

    The association between Saatchi & Saatchi and Carlsberg globally dates back to the 1970s when Carlsberg’s tagline, ‘Probably the best beer in the world’, was created by the agency for the UK market.

    Reliance Entertainment to release Shakal Pe Mat Ja

    MUMBAI: Reliance Entertainment has acquired the distribution rights of Linc Entertainment‘s debut production, Shakal Pe Mat Ja (SPMJ).

    The film was initially scheduled to release on 9 September but was postponed for a 23 September release. But just before the shoot could be wrapped up at the Delhi airport, the permission was withdrawn because of security reasons. Resultantly, the release date was again pushed back.

    The film will now release on 4 November.

    SPMJ is the story of four young boys who get caught as suspects at the Delhi international airport on the first anniversary of the British Subway attacks, while capturing a British Airways aircraft landing on their camera, which they claim to be a shot for a documentary that they are making. And there begins the journey of what becomes the hold up.

    Directed by Shubh, SPMJ stars Saurabh Shukla, Raghubir Yadav, Aamna Sharif, Umang Jain, Chitrak, Pratik, Harsh and the director himself.
